Bhumi Pednekar to pair up with Bollywood's three most versatile actors

Vicky Kaushal will next be seen in the role of a Mahabharata character, Ashwatthama. For those who have read the Hindu mythology, will know about the famous character who fought the great war with the Kauravas against the Pandavas in Mahabharat’s Kurukshetra war. He was the son of Guru Dronacharya and Kripi.

Vicky was last seen in ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ that was easily the biggest film of this year. The actor played the role of Major Vihaan Singh Shergill that was directed by debutant Aditya Dhar under the production of Ronnie Screwvala. The film was based on September 18, 2016, attacks on the army headquarters in Uri, Kashmir that is near the LoC. India retaliated to this with surgical strikes on September 29. Vicky Kaushal to reunite with 'Uri' director in next film on Mahabharata's Ashwatthama

One of the biggest takeaways from 2019's big hit 'Uri: The Surgical Strike' was its catchphrase 'How's the Josh?'- a line that caught the fancy of people across all age groups, fans and politicians alike. But did you know that the film's leading man, Vicky Kaushal was initially hesitant to say it in the film and wanted it to be changed?

The film`s director Aditya Dhar said that at one point during the shoot, he was about to change the line following a suggestion from Kaushal.
Recalling the incident, Dhar said, "We first shot the line `How`s the josh?` during the Myanmar sequence. Two minutes before the camera rolled, Vicky came to me and asked me to change the line because he thought somewhere the `feel` was not coming. I tried to explain that to motivate their team, army commanders talk like that, so let`s give it a try."

"I still remember when Vicky said that line for the first time, 30 members of our team had goosebumps on hearing it," added the 36-year-old director during a conversation with veteran screenplay writer Robin Bhatt as part of a programme titled 'Wartalaap' by the Screenwriters Association (SWA)in Mumbai on Sunday.

So, what was the story behind the line?

"I used to visit the Army club in Delhi along with my friends when I was a little boy. There used to be a former Army officer, who would ask all of us children to stand in a queue and ask us `How`s the josh?`. The game was, one by one, all children have to reply, `High, Sir`. Whoever would say it the loudest and the best would get a chocolate. Most of the time I used to win the chocolate," Dhar recounted.

It was just a memory that stayed with me, shared the film director.

When Dhar started writing the script of 'Uri: The Surgical Strike', he wrote the dialogue as part of Vihaan`s character without realising that the dialogue will become such a hit.

As the film has received a lot of appreciation from the audience and critics alike, asked if any producer has approached him to make such a film again, Dhar said: "Yes... Bollywood functions based on what is trending. Once a rom-com is hit, people will start making dozens of rom-coms. If a war film is hit, people will start making many of that. When I made `Uri...`, war film was not a commercially successful genre of the present time.

"Now that everyone wants to make films on war and Indian Army, I would look for something very different and start a new trend and will find a new challenge. When I start writing a story, I think about it two, three years ahead of its time," he added.

Bhatt said it is important for a writer to think ahead of his or her time because it is natural that after writing the script, it takes at least a year to release the film.

"Your story has to hold relevance till then and also it should have recall value. After a point, only 10 stories exist, the freshness in the narrative comes from a perspective and the expression of the storyteller," explained Bhatt, an award-winning screenplay writer who penned films like 'Baazigar', 'Aashiqui', 'Omkara', 'Koi Mil Gaya' among many others.

One of the biggest takeaways from 2019's big hit 'Uri: The Surgical Strike' was its catchphrase 'How's the Josh?'- a line that caught the fancy of people across all age groups, fans and politicians alike.

I tried to explain that to motivate their team, army commanders talk like that, so let`s give it a try." "I still remember when Vicky said that line for the first time, 30 members of our team had goosebumps on hearing it," added the 36-year-old director during a conversation with veteran screenplay writer Robin Bhatt as part of a programme titled 'Wartalaap' by the Screenwriters Association (SWA)in Mumbai on Sunday.
The killing of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in the Pulwama terror attack feels like a "personal loss" and strong befitting reply must be given, `Uri` star Vicky Kaushal has said.

Kaushal is currently basking in the success of ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ - a film based on the surgical strike carried out by the Indian Army in 2016 against terrorist launch pads across the Line of Control in Pakistan after four militants attacked the Army`s Uri`s base camp in Jammu and Kashmir on September 18 and killed 19 unarmed soldiers. The movie was released on January 11 this year.

"It feels like a personal loss. A strong befitting answer must be given to terrorism. As a nation, we should come together and give the required support to the families of the martyrs, emotionally and financially. Our prayers are with them," he told ANI on the sidelines of an event here on Saturday.
Forty CRPF personnel were killed on Thursday after a suicide bomber rammed a car laden with explosives into a CRPF convoy in Awantipora area of Pulwama in Kashmir. Soon after the teror strike, a number of B-town celebs, including Kaushal, had tweeted condemning the ghastly attack. He will be next seen in Karan Johar`s magnum opus `Takht` alongside Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Bhumi Pednekar and Janhvi Kapoor.

This was one army rule we all strictly lived by, through the Shoot of the Film. Once in costume, each and every one of us was responsible for our own gears. You wear them or hold them, it’s going to be with you through the span of the Shoot for that day. Our pockets would be full of protein bars, nuts and bags with bottles of energy drinks, because deep in those jungles sometimes no food trolleys or spot team were allowed to reach. Somedays I would wake up with my right index finger already bent imitating to pull the trigger. Those night shoots full of intense action, ofcourse were peppered with some fun banter and laughs in between shots amongst the boys, where our director @adityadharfilms would also join us. All of this feels worth it, with the generous love the Film is getting from you all. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for keeping the Josh so high. View this post on Instagram Your helmets, your gears, your guns... you hold on to, like your life depends on them. Vicky Kaushal's 'Uri: The Surgical Strike' earns Rs 200 crore within 4 weeks of its release

Bollywood film 'Uri: TheSurgical Strike' has not yet been imported for screening purposes by any importer in Pakistan, confirmed Pakistan’s Chairman Central Censor Board, Danyal Gillani to WION.

'Uri,' talks about the surgical strikes which India claims it did on Pakistan’s territory in September 2016. The much-talked-about film has been making headlines in the Indian cinemas, however, no importer has thought of getting the movie to Pakistan.

On this, the Central Chairman of Pakistan’s Film Censor Board, Danyal Gillani said, “So far no importer has applied for a NoC for the feature film. As per procedure, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting gives NoC to all the foreign feature films followed by Censor Board’s preview for grant of public viewership certificate”.

Sources told WION that once the movie is imported, it goes to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for a NoC and if it manages to get a NoC on the import, then the censor board screens it. After the preview, changes are suggested and made to make it suitable for the audience in Pakistan. The film is then processed for release. In the case of 'Uri', the film has not been imported in Pakistan yet.

In the past, Pakistan has released some Indian movies that have been critical of Pakistan after some editing and omissions as raised by the censor board. Since 2006 to date, Pakistan has barred the screening of 29 Indian movies in Pakistan.

In 2018, Pakistan had banned 6 Bollywood films from being screened in the country after Pakistan's censor board did not approve of the content.

In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the Indian cricket team was asked - "How's the josh?" "High Sir!" replied the jubilant players. Watch the video here: Looks like the "JOSH" in the squad is "HIGH SIR" 🗣️ 📢 'HOWS THE JOSH' - @vickykaushal09 😉😉#TeamIndia pic.twitter.com/bzsB5EelBd — BCCI (@BCCI) February 3, 2019 × At 18 for four, India were heading towards another sub-100 total before the middle-order batsmen fought back to post a fighting total of 252. The 98-run stand for the fifth wicket between Ambati Rayudu (90 off 113) and Vijay Shankar (45 off 64) was the highlight of the middle-order fight back. Hardik Pandya's 45 off 22 balls also went a long way in India posting a challenging target and his two wickets later on showed why he is such an important member of the team.

'How's the josh?' Team India is asked after winning New Zealand series. Answer of course is 'High sir!'

"I have learnt a lot as an actor and that will reflect in my work henceforth. It is a beautiful thing to be loved. It makes me feel I am the best version of myself. I feel gratified, surreal. It feels great to be respected as an actor," he added.

Vicky, son of noted action director Sham Kaushal, said he feels proud to see his parents happy with his career graph.

Vicky Kaushal: In 2018, I got my identity as an actor

The makers of the upcoming film on Indian Army’s surgical strikes ‘Uri’ have now released a short new teaser featuring the character of Yami Gautam in the forefront as she answers the media in a press conference.

In the video, someone can be heard asking her about her role in the film, to which she says, she is not playing a soldier and we will have to wait to see the film to know about her role. Watch the trailer here.

She was then asked what message she would like to extend to the soldiers of the country, she said, "We and the whole country is very proud of you. We are here because of you."

Soon after, someone can be heard asking if she really knew what Surgical strike is, to which, she answers saying, "Surgical strike is when someone comes strikes and leaves even before one realizes it,” and adds, "like how these soldiers took position and you guys didn't even notice it..."

The answer is then followed with three soldiers who were initially appearing as part of a poster, start walking towards the frame, closer to Yami. The three soldiers include Vicky Kaushal’s character too. Vicky then comes to fore and says: "Yeh naya Hindustan hai! ye Hindustan ghar mein ghusega bhi aur marega bhi" (This is new India. This India will enter the house and attack too)

Yami Gautam captioned the post saying, "Movements so swift and actions so stealthy, that their attack will go unnoticed, this is Indian Army's art of subtle deception! Watch #URITheSurgicalStrike in cinemas on 11th January."

We are here because of you." Soon after, someone can be heard asking if she really knew what Surgical strike is, to which, she answers saying, "Surgical strike is when someone comes strikes and leaves even before one realizes it,” and adds, "like how these soldiers took position and you guys didn't even notice it..." The answer is then followed with three soldiers who were initially appearing as part of a poster, start walking towards the frame, closer to Yami. The three soldiers include Vicky Kaushal’s character too. Vicky then comes to fore and says: "Yeh naya Hindustan hai! ye Hindustan ghar mein ghusega bhi aur marega bhi" (This is new India. This India will enter the house and attack too) Yami Gautam captioned the post saying, "Movements so swift and actions so stealthy, that their attack will go unnoticed, this is Indian Army's art of subtle deception! Watch #URITheSurgicalStrike in cinemas on 11th January." New teasers for 'Uri: The Surgical Strike' will make you proud of the Indian Army

No one would have predicted Vicky Kaushal's stardom back in 2015 when he had made his debut in Neeraj Ghaywan's critically acclaimed film 'Masaan'. A poignant film on love and loss, the film was a favourite in almost every international film festival but was not really a commercial success back home. It was critically lauded for sure, but one would have never thought that its male lead- a tall, unconventional looking, the lanky boy would become the nation's favourite actor, three years down the line.

The man, who started with art-house cinema, made a transition to more commercial space this year with two big-budget films- 'Sanju' and 'Manmarziyaan'- but also balanced it out with two digital, small-budget films- 'Love Per Square Foot' and 'Lust Stories'. Each of the films had him playing strikingly different characters but Kaushal aced in almost all of them.

Ranbir Kapoor may have won the maximum accolades for Rajkumar Hirani's flawed biopic 'Sanju', but if there's one person who stood out amid a crowd of very well-known faces, it was Kaushal whose performance as the socially awkward Kamlesh or Kamli struck a chord with one and all.

Kaushal's role was not the main lead. Hirani's 'Sanju' was primarily a father-son story but Kaushal's sheer talent and his on-screen camaraderie with Ranbir made the film also a story of two friends. Kamli's as a character could have easily been forgotten as just one of the supporting acts in the film. But Kaushal managed to shine and make people sit up and notice his character of a friendly Gujarati businessman in the US who befriended Sanju as he and his family were grappling with the sudden demise of Nargis Dutt. Kaushal's performance left such an impact that it got people curious about the actual person on whom the character was based.

'Sanju' was not the first time this year that Kaushal impressed critics and fans alike with his performance. His last release before 'Sanju' was in Karan Johar's story on Netflix' production 'Lust Stories.' A film primarily about women and their sexual desires, Kaushal's buffoonery struck a chord with one and all. Kaushal played an ignorant husband whose pleasure in bed comes literally in five thrusts much to his wife's (Kiara Advani) dismay. Kaushal's role was an unconventional one. A role that perhaps a lot of actors would be apprehensive to play as it did not glorify his machismo, instead poked fun at his inadequacies in bed. Yet Kaushal's performance stood out despite some the strong portrayals by the women. Read the review of 'Lust Stories here.

Of the five films that the actor was seen in this year, in three, Kaushal did not play the central character- yet managed to leave a lasting impression in each of these films. Each of the characters was strikingly different but Kaushal was convincing in all these parts. Be it as the supportive husband whose world comes crashing as he finds out his wife is a spy in 'Raazi', or the ambitious guy craving to own a space of his own in the ever-growing city of Mumbai in 'Love Per Square Foot' or even as the commitment-phobic, undecided Vicky in Anurag Kashyap's 'Manmarziyaan', Kaushal made each of the characters his own.

Vicky of 'Manmarziyaan' was a complex character. A man-child who just understood one word- Rumi, the girl he loved. He lacked ambition, he lacked any kind of vision, did not have a plan and yet was somehow extremely endearing. It was also diametrically opposite to Kaushal's character Iqbal in 'Raazi' where he played the responsible, righteous husband to Sehmat. Read the review of 'Manmarziyaan' here.

Kaushal first appeared in a small role in 'Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana' but it was his performance as the lovelorn Deepak in 'Masaan' that made people sit up and take notice of him. Your heart went out for him as he cried his heart out after cremating his girlfriend. His second film, 'Zubaan', had him playing a conflicted person who finds solace in music. And while the 'Masaan' and 'Zubaan' presented a softer side of the actor, Anurag Kashyap's 'Raman Raghav 2.0' had Kaushal playing a strikingly different role as the antagonist. His character was dark, evil and someone you would easily like to hate. And the actor aced it making Raghav one of the darkest characters that Bollywood has seen in recent times.

In Bollywood, it is easy to get typecast soon. So credit must be given to Vicky Kaushal for steering away from the herd and choosing characters that matter irrespective of the screentime.

He may be a few films old, but Vicky Kaushal, in a very short span of time has become one of the most dependable names in Bollywood. He takes risks, he experiments and manages to surprise the viewer with his talent one film at a time.

"When you are portraying the story of a real-life incident, there`s an added responsibility to make things look more authentic and as real as possible," she added.
