Elon Musk: Not donating money to either candidate in US presidential race

Former US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on&nbsp;Wednesday (Mar 6)&nbsp;formally announced she was ending her campaign to get a Republican nomination in the presidential race.

The Indian-origin politician's exit&nbsp;paves the way for Donald Trump to win the Republican nomination as well as a possible rematch between him and the incumbent President Joe Biden.&nbsp;

<h2>No regrets: Haley ends her White House bid</h2>

"The time has now come to suspend my campaign. I said I wanted Americans to have their voices heard. I have done that. I have no regrets," said the former governor of South Carolina.&nbsp;

She added, "Although I will no longer be a candidate, I will not stop using my voice for the things I believe in."

Haley also congratulated the Republican frontrunner and her ex-boss&nbsp;but did not endorse&nbsp;him. "In all likelihood, Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee...I congratulate him and wish him well."&nbsp;

Haley also said that it is up to Trump to "earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him. And I hope he does that."&nbsp;

After her speech,&nbsp;Haley’s spokesperson took to X to point out the difference between Trump's and Biden's reaction to her exit.

Super Tuesday showdown: Trump and Biden lead the pack. Who will win presidential nominations?

For the second time&nbsp;this year, former United States president and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump confused President Joe Biden for his predecessor Barack Obama. This time around the gaffe happened during a rally in the US state of Virginia over the weekend.&nbsp;

<h2>Obama or Biden?</h2>

Addressing a rally in Virginia over the weekend, the former president confused Biden who once served as the vice president in the Obama administration and said how the Russian president has “so little respect for Obama” that he is threatening nuclear war.&nbsp;

“And (Russian President Vladimir) Putin…has so little respect for Obama that he is starting to throw around the nuclear word. You heard that. Nuclear. He’s starting to talk nuclear weapons today. And I was waiting for that to happen,” said Trump, presumably talking about Biden.&nbsp;

He added, “We have a fool…as a president.” The video also shows that the crowd previously heard cheering and clapping went silent after the former president’s gaffe.&nbsp;

“Crooked Joe Biden must take a Cognitive Test. Maybe that way we would be able to find out why he makes such terrible decisions,” Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, on Thursday (Feb 29).&nbsp;

<h2>Why is Williamson ‘unsuspending’ her campaign?</h2>

“Hey, I have an important announcement to make. As of today, I am unsuspending my campaign for the presidency of the United States,” Williamson said in a video posted on X. She also went on to admit that she dropped out because “I was losing the horse race.”

The announcement also came after the Michigan primary election results where Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump easily won their respective primaries.&nbsp;

Notably, Williamson, despite dropping out of the race, edged out Representative Dean Phillips (Democrat-Minnesota) and secured third place in the Michigan Democratic primary.&nbsp;

She received around three per cent of the votes when compared to Phillips’ 2.7 per cent. Whereas Biden secured 81.1 per cent of the votes.&nbsp;

“Right now we have a fascist standing at the door and everybody’s all upset about it,” said Williamson, on X presumably referring to the former president.&nbsp;

She also went on to criticise Biden’s economic policies at length and how they only benefit a small part of the US population and argued that “we need a president” who will eliminate student loan debt, provide Medicare for all, and so on.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Juggernaut of dark vision’</h2>

In her video, the writer and progressive Democrat said that people tell her “you’re delusional”.&nbsp;

“I’ll tell you what’s delusional…closing our eyes and crossing our fingers and just hoping that somehow Biden and Harris will be able to beat that juggernaut of dark, dark vision,” Williamson said referring to Trump.&nbsp;

She also called for a ceasefire in Gaza amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.&nbsp;

The impact of the Biden administration’s continued support for Israel was also reflected in the Michigan Democratic primary results as a section of angry Democrat voters (more than 13 per cent) marked their ballots as “uncommitted”.&nbsp;

According to the Michigan Department of State, selecting ‘uncommitted’ implies that the voter is exercising a party vote, but not committed to the candidates on the ballot.&nbsp;

<h2>Who is&nbsp;Marianne Williamson?</h2>

Marianne Williamson&nbsp;launched her second shot at the presidency nearly a year ago and became the first&nbsp;major Democrat to Biden for the&nbsp;party’s nomination in 2024.&nbsp;

In 2020, she backed out of the race for the White House&nbsp;in early January of that year after not gaining enough&nbsp;traction during the primaries and endorsed Senator&nbsp;Bernie Sanders.&nbsp;

Williamson, who is reportedly&nbsp;a&nbsp;spiritual adviser to Oprah Winfrey, came under fire last year due to her "abusive" treatment of her&nbsp;2020 campaign staff.

The 71-year-old has built a career preaching love and forgiveness but, according to media reports, her&nbsp;public persona contradicts her&nbsp;private behaviour.&nbsp;

Marianne Williamson: Democratic long-shot ‘unsuspends’ US presidential election campaign

In yet another attempt by the Republican party to get United States President Joe Biden removed from office, outgoing House of Representatives member Ken Buck has called on Vice President Kamala Harris to oust her boss by invoking the 25th amendment of the US Constitution for being too old and “incapable”.

<h2>What is the 25th Amendment?</h2>

Buck, 65, on Monday (Feb 26) introduced a resolution calling for Harris to convene a cabinet meeting and invoke the 25th Amendment to declare Democrat President Biden, 81, “incapable of executing the duties of his office.”

The VP and a majority of the cabinet would have to agree to oust the president if he&nbsp;is deemed incapable of carrying out his duties, as per section four of the 25th Amendment.&nbsp;

The amendment of the US Constitution was adopted after the assassination of John F Kennedy to provide contingencies in the case of presidential death, removal, resignation or incapacitation.&nbsp;

Harris, as per Buck’s resolution, should “convene and mobilise the principal officers of the executive departments of the cabinet to activate section four of the 25th amendment to declare President Joseph R Biden incapable of executing the duties of his office”.

He also cited special counsel Robert Hur’s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/biden-willfully-retained-classified-documents-but-no-criminal-charges-warranted-special-counsel-688431">damning report </a>which called Biden a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” The Biden administration vehemently refuted Hur’s characterisation of the US president.&nbsp;

The resolution&nbsp;by the Colorado representative also said that the incumbent president has been “televised wandering aimlessly at events…frequently speaks publicly in an incoherent…manner” and has “repeatedly fallen while walking up stairs”. &nbsp;

<h2>Is Trump any better?</h2>

As the US gears up for the presidential election, likely to be a rematch between&nbsp;Trump and Biden, polls have shown that most voters have expressed concerns about the incumbent president’s age.&nbsp;

At 81, Biden is the oldest president in US history and would be 86 by the end of a second term, if he wins. However, Trump who is around three and a half years younger than his successor, was also the oldest president in American history by the end of his term.&nbsp;

Not to mention, Trump has also made <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-presidential-election-nikki-haley-questions-trumps-mental-fitness-after-he-confused-her-with-nancy-pelosi-682028">gaffes</a>, been televised wandering aimlessly, speaking incoherently, and struggling&nbsp;to maintain balance while walking.&nbsp;

“You got to take a look at the other guy, he’s about as old as I am, but he can’t remember his wife’s name,” Biden said during an appearance on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, on Monday (Feb 26).&nbsp;

Last week, the former president praised his wife, Melania, and referenced “Mercedes” – Mercedes Schlapp who was his former aide, leading many to suggest that Trump had used the wrong name for his wife.&nbsp;

Republican Ken Buck calls on Kamala Harris to oust Biden for being ‘too old', ‘incapable’

From India to the United States, more than 50 countries across the world with a combined population of 4.2 billion are expected to hold national and/or local elections in 2024, making it the biggest election year in history. But as voters from various nations head to polls, who are they voting for? What is their decision being based on? Policies? Politicians? Or did AI-generated propaganda manage to sway their opinion?

The historic election year is also taking place at a critical time when experts across the globe are calling on world leaders to regulate the rampant growth of AI, warning about its alarming impact on society, including the elections. Here’s how AI-generated propaganda poses a threat to election integrity.

<h2>AI v/s government officials</h2>

Last week, Google’s new AI-powered chatbot Gemini came under fire after it suggested that some experts believe that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies are <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/google-ai-tools-fascist-modi-response-angers-india-heres-what-exactly-happened-694087">“fascist”.</a>&nbsp;

India’s Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar slammed Google accusing Gemini of violating the country’s IT laws.&nbsp;

The Indian PM who <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/pm-modi-says-world-is-assured-he-is-returning-for-third-term-in-power-top-points-691450">remains&nbsp;optimistic</a> over his return to power for a third consecutive term is set to contest the general election which is expected to take place in the upcoming months, and while this particular incident may not affect his chances to possibly be re-elected, it does raise bigger concerns.&nbsp;

A study conducted by researchers at Stanford University and Georgetown University in the US has found that AI-generated propaganda is just as effective as propaganda written by humans. In this study, researchers also noted that people spreading propaganda could easily use AI to flood online platforms with such information and mass-produce propaganda with minimal effort.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

In the US, a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/political-consultant-steve-kramer-owns-up-to-biden-robocall-says-wanted-to-flag-dangers-of-ai-693900">robocall that impersonated</a> President Joe Biden using AI appealed to more than 5,000 New Hampshire voters to not vote in the presidential primary and save their votes for the general elections to be held in November.&nbsp;

The move not only sparked outrage among the voters but also investigations by watchdogs and election officials. This incident prompted the US to outlaw robocalls which use voices generated by AI within weeks.&nbsp;

In the United Kingdom, Home Secretary James Cleverly warned that criminals and “malign actors” could use AI-generated “deepfakes” to rig the general elections. &nbsp;

He also spoke about how people working on behalf of states such as Russia and Iran could generate thousands of deepfakes to manipulate the democratic process.&nbsp;

“The era of deepfake and AI-generated content to mislead and disrupt is already in play,” he told the Times in an interview. He added, “The landscape it is inserted into needs its rules, transparency and safeguards for its users.”

<h2>AI-generated propaganda is persuasive</h2>

In 2022, the release of ChatGPT marked a pivotal moment in the development of AI, and despite being around for less than two years, it has become powerful enough to impact elections across the world.

The previously mentioned study published in the peer-reviewed journal PNAS Nexus used OpenAI’s GPT-3 model – the predecessor and less capable version of the current GPT-4 &nbsp;– to generate propaganda news articles with prompts such as drone strikes, sanctions against Iran, and US involvement in Syria.

The topics covered six main propaganda topics including conspiracy that the US created fake reports that said Syria’s government used chemical weapons and Saudi Arabia committed funding for the US-Mexico border wall.&nbsp;

These topics likely originated from Iranian or Russian state-aligned covert propaganda campaigns which were identified by investigative journalists or researchers.&nbsp;

More than 8,200 Americans who participated in the study were shown real propaganda articles as well as AI-generated ones. The findings were shocking as 43.5 per cent of people agreed with the claims after reading the AI-generated articles and 47.4 per cent believed the real propaganda article.&nbsp;

“This suggests that propagandists could use GPT-3 to generate persuasive articles with minimal human effort, by using existing articles on unrelated topics to guide GPT-3 about the style and length of new articles,” the researchers noted.&nbsp;

The authors of the study also believe that AI could also be used to generate fake social media posts, comments, and even audio and video clips.&nbsp;

“With AI, actors – could quickly and cheaply generate many articles that convey a single narrative, while also varying in style and wording. This approach would increase the volume of propaganda, while also making it harder to detect,” said the team of researchers.&nbsp;

<h2>‘It’s already happening’</h2>

In 2023, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, which created ChatGPT, testified before the US Congress saying that the regulation of the “increasingly powerful models” of AI is <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/openai-ceo-testifies-before-us-congress-calls-regulation-of-artificial-intelligence-critical-593057">“critical” to mitigate the risks</a> the technology poses.&nbsp;

Altman also spoke about how the use of AI to interfere with election integrity is a “significant area of concern” and nearly a year later he may be right. As of now, there is very little evidence of AI-generated content shaping voters’ opinions, but it is not entirely outside the realm of possibility.&nbsp;

For example, it was not immediately clear if Biden’s fake AI-generated robocall prevented voters from turning out to vote in New Hampshire but it doesn’t matter, said Lisa Gilbert, executive vice-president of Public Citizen, advocating for regulation of AI’s use in politics in the US.&nbsp;

“I don’t think we need to wait to see how many people got deceived to understand that that was the point,” Gilbert said, as quoted by the Guardian.&nbsp;

What happened in the US is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to AI’s possible impact on elections. In Slovakia, days ahead of the pivotal election, earlier this month, a damning audio of one of the top candidates went viral, reported CNN.

In the clip, a pro-NATO candidate Michal Šimečka was reportedly heard boasting about how he rigged the election. Again, while the number of votes swayed by the leaked audio remains uncertain, the reportedly AI-generated clip sparked concerns among US officials ahead of the upcoming presidential elections.&nbsp;

In Indonesia, posters and billboards of a “doe-eyed cartoon version” of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/brutal-general-turned-tiktok-star-prabowo-subianto-sets-eyes-on-indonesian-presidency-664965">Prabowo Subianto</a>, generated by AI, were placed across the country, reported Reuters. The retired general best known for his past brutalities soon came to be known as a TikTok sensation and was described as a delight among Gen Z voters.&nbsp;

The AI-generated cartoon had been central to Prabowo’s electoral rebranding. “I’ll vote for him because he’s gemoy (Indonesian slang for cute and cuddly),” Fika Juliana Putri, 19, a first-time voter told Reuters. She added, “That’s the main reason.”&nbsp;

As experts continue to warn about AI supercharging online disinformation campaigns, some have also said that voters may be more prepared for what’s happening than officials may think.&nbsp;

Explained: How AI-generated propaganda poses a real threat this historic election year

Russian leader Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that he prefers President Joe Biden to win the US 2024 election over former President Donald Trump, describing him as more experienced and predictable.

As the first day of the hearing at the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS)&nbsp;on Thursday (Feb 8) ended, the judges appeared sceptical towards the decision kicking former President Donald Trump off the ballot in the US state of Colorado for his role in the 2021 Capitol attack.&nbsp;

The nine Supreme Court justices heard arguments related to Trump’s appeal of a December 19 ruling by Colorado’s top court which barred him from the state’s Republican primary ballot citing Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution due to his alleged participation in an insurrection.

The amendment in question bars “officers of the United States” who have engaged in “insurrection or rebellion” from holding office. The verdict in this case has major implications for the upcoming November 5 elections.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened in the court?</h2>

The justices – a six-three conservative majority including three judges appointed by Trump – expressed concerns about states having the power on their own to take sweeping actions which would affect a presidential election nationwide.

Conservative Chief Justice John Roberts told Jason Murray, who is representing the Colorado voters who brought the case, that if the Colorado court’s decision is upheld, other states would also start disqualification proceedings for their own candidates from either of the parties.&nbsp;

“It will come down to just a handful of states that are going to decide the presidential election. That’s a pretty daunting consequence,” said Roberts.&nbsp;

Liberal Justice Elena Kagan asked Murray that the question to confront here is also if a “single state should decide who gets to be president of the United States,” adding that “whether a former president is disqualified for insurrection, to be president again...it sounds awfully national to me.”

Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh questioned how Section 3 of the US Constitution would impact democracy, telling Murray that his position would be “disenfranchising voters to a significant degree”.&nbsp;

“The reason we’re here is that President Trump tried to disenfranchise 80 million Americans who voted against him, and the Constitution doesn’t require that we be given another chance,” said Murrary bluntly.&nbsp;

Jonathan Mitchell, a former solicitor general of Texas representing Trump opened the oral arguments and said that only Congress can disqualify a candidate.&nbsp;

“The Colorado Supreme Court’s decision is wrong and should be reversed,” said Mitchell, adding that the decision would “take away the votes of potentially tens of millions of Americans.”

Meanwhile, Mitchell, after being questioned by Liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, said the amendment in question does not apply to Trump as he was the president and not an “officer of the United States,” adding that the term could only be used for an appointed official of some kind.

Notably, justices spent little time discussing the former president’s role in the January 6, 2021 insurrection when thousands of Trump supporters, in a bid to stop lawmakers from certifying Joe Biden’s win, attacked the US Capitol.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Very beautiful process’</h2>

Moments after the arguments concluded at the SCOTUS, the former president spoke to the press from Florida and said he was watching the hearing and thought it went well for him. “In watching the Supreme Court today, I thought it was a very beautiful process,” said Trump.&nbsp;

US presidential election 2024: Supreme Court seems sceptical of Colorado's decision to kick Trump off ballot

United States President Joe Biden, on Monday (Feb 5) confused his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron with France’s former leader Francois Mitterrand who died nearly three decades ago, during a recent speech, the latest in his string of gaffes.&nbsp;

<h2>What did Biden say?</h2>

The US president and White House hopeful cannot seemingly&nbsp;catch a break, with American voters worried about the 81-year-old being fit to serve a second term, and his approval being less than all recent presidential incumbents, his latest gaffe the video of which has now gone viral, will not help his case.&nbsp;

United States President Joe Biden, on Monday (Feb 5) confused his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron with France’s former leader Francois Mitterrand who died nearly three decades ago, during a recent speech, the latest in his string of gaffes. What did Biden say? The US president and White House hopeful cannot seemingly catch a break, with American voters worried about the 81-year-old being fit to serve a second term, and his approval being less than all recent presidential incumbents, his latest gaffe the video of which has now gone viral, will not help his case. Recent reports in the US media suggest that former US First Lady Michelle Obama may enter the 2024 presidential election, setting the stage for a potential showdown with former US president Donald Trump. Speculations have been rife after Cindy Adams' column in the New York Post and longtime Trump adviser Roger J. Stone Jr&nbsp;predicting the same.

"I continue to predict — as I have for well over two years — that Michelle Obama will be the Democrat Party Nominee for President in 2024," Roger J Stone Jr, the longtime adviser to Donald Trump posted on social media a week before the Iowa caucuses.

<h2>What did Cindy Adams say?</h2>

Adams dismisses incumbent US President Joe Biden as the next potential president citing his purported reluctance to debate and challenge in delivering pre-written scripts.&nbsp;

In her article, she contends, "Biden won’t debate. Can’t. Our codger-in-chief cannot even read the prewritten script in front of him fast enough to pronounce the words. So, forget him, which most of us already have."

Adding weight to the speculation, Adams pointed to Michelle Obama's expressed apprehension about the 2024 election outcome in a podcast interview.&nbsp;

The columnist suggests that Obama's concerns were not a mere casual remark but a strategic move, noting that she has sent a survey to Democratic Party leaders gauging their support for her potential candidacy.

The New York Post reveals that over a year ago, during the summer of 2022, Michelle Obama allegedly met with prominent hedge CEOs in NYC, declaring, "I am running, and I am asking for your support."&nbsp;

Adams interprets this as a sign that the Obamas are subtly encouraging Joe Biden to step aside.&nbsp;

Voters in the small town of Dixville Notch kicked off the US state of New Hampshire’s presidential primary on Tuesday (Jan 23) and handed a surprise early landslide victory to White House hopeful Nikki Haley.&nbsp;

Notably, the vote took place at midnight with all six registered voters &nbsp;– four Republican voters and two independents – choosing the former South Carolina governor over former president Donald Trump and all the other candidates.

The small resort town in New Hampshire was the first one in the US to vote in the 2024 primaries where the voters were outnumbered by more than 10-to-one by reporters from across the world.&nbsp;

The polls in Dixville Notch opened and closed just after midnight and the count took about 10 minutes and ended with no votes at all for Republican frontrunner Trump and six for Haley, his only remaining rival in the party’s nomination race.

Notably, the tiny northeastern town in the middle of the forest near the Canadian border has held the title of voting “first in the nation” in primaries and the presidential election itself since 1960, given the voters there cast ballots so early.&nbsp;

Additionally, even though Trump has spent less time in New Hampshire juggling one rally a night with court appearances out of state, he is still leading the polls ahead of the election.&nbsp;

Former United States president Donald Trump, eyeing a return to the presidency in the upcoming election later this year, on Friday (Jan 19) mocked presidential frontrunner Nikki Haley's first name. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump repeatedly referred to Haley as "Nimbra." Nikki Haley was born in the US to Indian immigrants. Her name is Nimarata Nikki Randhawa but she has always gone by her middle name "Nikki." She took the surname “Haley” upon getting married in 1996. Earlier this month, Trump also said Haley was ineligible for the presidency because her parents were not American citizens when she was born in 1972. 'He's clearly insecure...': Haley responds On being asked at a press conference on Friday about Trump's remarks, Haley told reporters, "I’ll let people decide what he means by his attacks." “What we know is, look, he’s clearly insecure if he goes and does these temper tantrums if he’s spending millions of dollars on TV. He’s insecure, he knows that something’s wrong,” she added. "We are going to suspend this presidential campaign," Ramaswamy told supporters after he was projected to finish a distant fourth in the Iowa caucuses," he said. "I called Donald Trump to tell him I congratulate him on his victory, and now going forward he will have my full endorsement for the president," Ramaswamy added. (With inputs from agencies)

Asa Hutchinson suspends presidential campaign, congratulates Donald Trump for Iowa victory

As the spectre&nbsp;of a potential return of former president Donald Trump to the White House looms, countries worldwide are delicately recalibrating their diplomatic strategies. The repercussions of Trump's unexpected 2016 victory left an indelible mark on international relations, prompting a proactive approach from global leaders to navigate the uncertainties that a Trump 2.0 presidency might bring.

<h2>Estonia's strategic outreach: Balancing diplomacy</h2>

Estonia's Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, has exemplified&nbsp;the global trend of strategic engagement. During her November visit to Washington, Kallas not only engaged with White House officials but also sought conversations with key allies of Donald Trump, reported Bloomberg.

The outreach extends beyond the political hub of Washington, as demonstrated by Estonia's foreign minister, Margus Tsahkna, expressing gratitude to Lockheed Martin Corp. workers in Arkansas, acknowledging their role in Estonia's security. Such initiatives aim to preemptively address concerns and garner support from diverse segments of American society.

<h2>Global fears and hopes</h2>

World leaders, scarred by the unpredictable outcomes of the 2016 election, are treading carefully, expressing both fears and hopes about the potential impact of a Trump resurgence.

European allies, once taken aback by Trump's America First rhetoric and threats to NATO, are cautious in their discussions. Some European Union leaders are avoiding&nbsp;openly acknowledging the prospect of Trump's return, fearing that mere mention could influence the political landscape.

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has publicly labelled it a "threat," stressing the need to learn from the lessons of Trump's first term.

<h2>Asia's mixed sentiments</h2>

In Asia, the dynamics are mixed.

India, having enjoyed a personal rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump, leans towards a preference for the previous administration.

Modi's government, in particular, favoured Trump's approach over Biden's, especially concerning human rights. However, the concern is not uniform, and nations in the Global South are discerning potential opportunities in Trump's transactional approach.

<h2>China's economic perspective</h2>

China, a focal point of Trump's trade policies, assesses the economic implications of a potential return.

The continuation of tariffs imposed during Trump's presidency could modestly benefit China. However, broader global repercussions, particularly on the United States, Canada, and Mexico, are acknowledged. The delicate balance between economic interests and geopolitical tensions characterises China's approach.

<h2>Global South's perspective</h2>

Nations in the Global South see opportunities amid the uncertainty. Brazil, assuming the G-20 presidency, fears potential disruptions to its climate action and poverty reduction plans with a resurgent Trump.

On the other hand, some nations in the Gulf region anticipate alignment with Trump's transactional approach, viewing it as a pragmatic fit for their policies.

<h2>Russia's cautious optimism</h2>

Russia, initially optimistic about Trump's election in 2016, is approaching&nbsp;the potential return with caution.

While there is an anticipation of better relations with a re-elected Trump, disappointment over unmet expectations during his first term tempers expectations.

The Kremlin's cautious optimism underscores the complexity of managing relationships with a volatile global actor.

The European Union, scarred by tit-for-tat sanctions with the Trump administration, aims to "Trump-proof" agreements. Senior EU diplomats, mindful of dependencies in energy and raw materials, recognise the need to address vulnerabilities.

Defence strategies, energy partnerships, and raw material dependencies are critical considerations as Europe prepares for potential shifts in global dynamics.

<h2>Defence concerns in Europe</h2>

Europe, particularly concerned about potential impacts on Russian relations, the Ukraine conflict, and the future of NATO, is actively engaging with Trump's representatives.

Defence and security discussions are paramount, with European nations taking precautionary measures and reaching out to influential voices close to the former president. Personal ties are seen as crucial in balancing national interests with diplomatic strategies.

The importance of personal relationships in global diplomacy is evident as leaders seek to balance personal rapport with national interests.

The delicate dance involves engaging with ex-officials, think tanks, and influential figures connected to Trump. Strategies range from massaging egos to preemptively addressing potential concerns, as nations strive to understand the foreign policy trajectory under a potential Trump administration.

As global leaders prepare for a range of scenarios, from reassessing trade dynamics to recalibrating defence strategies, the diplomatic community is actively adapting strategies. The sheer unpredictability of Trump's foreign policy poses challenges for all governments.

Explained | How Trump’s potential White House return impacts India and global dynamics

US climate envoy John Kerry, a key player in the Biden administration's push to tackle climate change, will step down to work on the president's reelection bid, media reported Saturday (Jan 13).

The former secretary of state and senator has spent the last three years liaising with other countries to up commitments on climate change, including at the most recent COP28 UN climate summit in Dubai.

Kerry, 80, intends to help Joe Biden's campaign by publicising the president's work in combatting global warming, according to multiple US media outlets citing officials familiar with the situation.

Kerry informed Biden of his intentions to leave on Wednesday, and his staff learned of the decision on Saturday, those officials said.

Apart from leading the US delegation at three UN climate summits, Kerry worked effectively with China despite complicated diplomatic relations. Together, the countries are the world's two largest polluters, accounting for 41 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions.

In a rare display of unity, the United States and China helped carry the COP28 December climate summit in Dubai, where negotiators sealed a historic although watered-down agreement to begin to transition away from oil, gas and coal.

Kerry had welcomed his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua a month earlier in California, where the two countries agreed on outlines of climate action that partly served as a basis for the nearly 200-nation Dubai deal.
News of Kerry's stepping down comes one day after Xie retired on health grounds.

One of Biden's first moves in office after his inauguration on January 20, 2021 was to rejoin the Paris climate agreement, which former president Donald Trump had exited.

Under the 2015 UN deal countries committed to limiting the Earth's warming to "well below" 2 degrees Celsius and preferably to the safer 1.5C threshold.

That said, the year 2023 was the hottest on record, with the increase in Earth's surface temperature nearly crossing the critical 1.5C threshold, according to EU climate monitors.

Kerry, himself a one-time Democratic presidential nominee, will step down sometime in the coming months, according to Axios, which first reported the news.
The White House and Kerry's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AFP.

John Kerry to step down as US climate envoy to help Biden's reelection bid: Reports

The Supreme Court of the US state of Oregon, on Friday (Jan 12) decided to keep former United States President and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump on the state’s primary ballot after it declined to hear the bid filed against him&nbsp;over his role in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters. &nbsp;

<h2>What did the court say?</h2>

Oregon is one of the several states where rights groups have filed lawsuits to get the former president removed from their state ballot under section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution.&nbsp;

The rarely used, civil-war era provision of the American Constitution that bars officials who have engaged in “insurrection or rebellion” from holding office is being used against Trump over his role in the January 6 insurrection by his supporters at the US Capitol.&nbsp;

The lawsuit at the Oregon Supreme Court was filed by five Oregon voters and organised by Free Speech For The People, a liberal advocacy group last year.

The state’s top court has decided to hold the ruling until the US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) hears an appeal by the former president.

The SCOTUS’ ruling may decide the issue once and for all, but the Oregon court said that plaintiffs could try again.&nbsp;

Notably, the US Supreme Court, where conservatives hold a six to three majority, has never ruled on Section 3, which fell into disuse after the 1870s.&nbsp;

So far, the US states of Colorado and Maine have kicked Trump off their state ballots based on the lawsuits filed under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. However, these decisions can be appealed.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Disappointing’</h2>

“The Oregon Supreme Court’s decision not to decide is disappointing,” the liberal advocacy group said in a statement Friday (Jan 12) after the ruling.&nbsp;

It added, “Waiting until the U.S. Supreme Court issues its order only compresses the time that the Oregon Supreme Court may have to resolve the issues that may remain.”

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung hailed the decision calling it the “correct one.” He added, “President Trump urges the swift dismissal of all remaining, bad-faith, election interference 14th Amendment ballot challenges.”

According to Oregon election officials, the names on the primary ballot must be finalised by March 21 and the state’s primary will be held exactly two months after.&nbsp;

US presidential election 2024: Trump not to be removed from Oregon ballot, for now, says state’s supreme court

The year 2024 has begun and as people across the world crack jokes about how they didn't work on their&nbsp;resolutions in the first two weeks, political pundits have begun focusing their gaze on the election season. This is no ordinary year for democracy worldwide as national elections are slated to take place in a record number of countries including India, UK, Indonesia, Russia and of course the United States. That means almost half the world is going to participate in an election. The United States, the most powerful country in the world, has its election day in the latter half of the year but the process (and the fever) will start on January 15 with Iowa caucuses.&nbsp;

US presidential election usually starts hitting headlines when there are two candidates in the ring, one from the Democratic Party and one from the Republican Party. The one-on-one contest has a certain simplicity to it in public perception and media coverage. But parties do not elect their candidates randomly. There are intra-party processes that kick in in the month of January each election year. And the fierce battle starts with Iowa caucuses.

<h2>What is a caucus?</h2>

Literally speaking, a caucus is "a group of people with similar interests, often within a larger organisation or political party" as defined by Oxford Dictionary. For someone who knows US election process inside out, the definition fairly encapsulates the process that kicks off in the election year.

But even if you don't know. We've got you covered.

Caucus in US political context indeed means a gathering. But it's not just any gathering. In caucuses, people actually indicate which presidential hopeful (among several from a party) they support. And result of these caucuses, big or small, has an impact on the hopeful's prospects of eventually getting officially nominated from that party.

A caucus is organised by the political parties and not by state officials. Each party organises its own caucus. Voters, generally registered with the party,, attend respective caucuses which are held in hundreds of places in the state.

Caucuses are like small community meetings where representatives of the candidates (or sometimes candidates themselves) address the gathering and make a short speech about why party voters should vote for them. A discussion among those present may or may not take place. But ultimately the attendees write name of the party candidate they want to have the ultimate nomination and cast their 'vote'. The votes from the state are then tallied and sent to that party's state unit.

<h2>What are Primaries?</h2>

Unlike caucuses, which are organised by the political parties, primaries are organised by state authorities. The similarity between caucuses and primaries is that they ultimately indicate which candidate within a party its&nbsp;voters prefer.

<h2>What happens after these votes are cast?</h2>

Both&nbsp;Republican and Democratic parties have 'delegates' assigned for US states. These delegates ultimately 'endorse' a candidate in respective party conventions which take place after all primaries and caucuses.

And the delegates are assigned to each candidate in proportion with votes the candidates got from party supporters in caucuses and primaries.

<h2>Republican Iowa Caucus 2024</h2>

The&nbsp;Iowa&nbsp;caucuses kick off&nbsp;the election season. The Republican Party is holding its caucus on January 15.

At 7 pm CST (0100 GMT on Tuesday), Republican voters will gather in&nbsp;thousands of places of Republican caucus and indicate their choice for their favoured candidate.

The voting will be carried out by secret ballot. They will be sent to party unit in the state to be tallied and it is expected that result will be known within a few hours.

The Republican Party has assigned 40 delegates for the state.

<h2>Who can vote in the Iowa Caucuses 2024?</h2>

Residents of Iowa who are over 18 years of age and who have registered as Republican will be able to vote. Remote participation is not allowed. The voters should be present at the caucus if they want to vote.

<h2>What's so important about Iowa caucuses?</h2>

Iowa is a relatively small state in US with a population of just over 3 million. Iowa may not have the political might to decisively swing the result of the US Presidential Election but Iowa caucuses are important.

Firstly, It is the very first round of an actual intra-party fight between the presidential hopefuls. It kickstarts the election season and any candidate who wins the Iowa caucus may have wind in his/her sails as it boosts their profile.

The winner often commands the limelight just when the election fever is starting. This has the potential of swinging party voters in their favour in upcoming caucuses and primaries in other states.&nbsp;

Victory in Iowa may have a practical benefit as well as the winner might possibly be able to fill the&nbsp;war chest with influential donors turning to them. To have such a momentum right at the start is definitely not a bad thing.

<h2>How is the Republican field looking?</h2>

Despite his controversies and legal troubles, former US president Donald Trump is a clear frontrunner at least now. Republicans with&nbsp;some semblance of being able to challenge him are Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy. But they are too far behind him right now in terms of approval ratings.

<h2>What is the Democratic Party doing?</h2>

President Joe Biden is standing for a re-election. The Democratic Party will hold caucuses in Iowa but the voters will be able to indicate their preference by mail-in voting process which will begin on January 12 and will go on until&nbsp;March 5.

Despite his controversies and legal troubles, former US president Donald Trump is a clear frontrunner at least now. Republicans with some semblance of being able to challenge him are Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy. But they are too far behind him right now in terms of approval ratings. What is the Democratic Party doing? President Joe Biden is standing for a re-election. The Democratic Party will hold caucuses in Iowa but the voters will be able to indicate their preference by mail-in voting process which will begin on January 12 and will go on until March 5. Explained | Why Iowa Caucuses 2024 are important for US presidential elections

In a Republican debate that featured insults mixed with policy, US presidential hopefuls Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley repeatedly accused each other of lying. On Wednesday, in the final&nbsp; debate before the nominating process known as primaries begins, the Florida governor and former US Ambassador to UN&nbsp;pitched their bids to Republicans, battling to emerge as the top alternative to favourite Donald Trump.

Days before the campaign's first votes are to be cast, the two battled to be the GOP's candidate in the 2024 US presidential election.

Former US president Donald Trump was once again absent from the debate held in Iowa's capital, Des Moines. The two present at the debate, DeSantis and Haley, bombarded each other with a slew of insults, engaging in an increasingly rancorous battle.

At one point, DeSantis referred to Haley as a "mealy-mouthed politician".

"We don't need another mealy-mouthed politician who just tells you what she thinks you want to hear just to try to get your vote, then to get an office and to do her donors' bidding," he said.

"Donald Trump is running to pursue his issues. Nikki Haley is running to pursue her donors' issues. I'm running to pursue your issues and your family's issues and to turn this country around," he added.

Haley also made it obvious that the gloves were off. Hitting out at rival DeSantis' runaway campaign, she, as per AFP, repeatedly directed the audience to a website dedicated to documenting his "lies".

"Every time he lies… don't turn this into a drinking game because you will be over-served by the end of the night," said Haley.

<h2>Donald Trump absent, Chris Christie drops out</h2>

Trump, the clear frontrunner, was noticeably absent from the head-to-head showdown just five days before Iowa's pivotal opening vote in the primary season.

Chris Christie, Trump's most vocal critic in the Republican Party, dropped out just hours earlier. With no other candidates qualifying, Haley and DeSantis were expected to take potshots at Trump. However, the two mainly were seen competing to be his closest runner-up.

Haley, for the most part, stuck to her campaign line that Trump was "the right president at the right time" but that "his way is not my way."

At one point, she did criticise Trump over his bogus claims of a stolen election in 2020.&nbsp;

DeSantis was tougher on Trump and briefly hit out at his 'poor record' on curbing public disorder, broken promises on border security and failure to attack Washington's corruption.

US Presidential Elections: War of words between Biden & Trump heats up

The US Supreme Court on Friday (Jan 5) agreed to hear former President Donald Trump's appeal after he was barred from Colorado's Republican primary ballot. Colorado Supreme Court on December 19 last year disqualified Trump from the state's primary based on the 14th Amendment, citing his alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

The justices have expedited the process, scheduling oral arguments for February 8, well ahead of the Colorado Republican primary slated for March 5. Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, filed his appeal on Wednesday (Jan 4).

The Colorado Supreme Court's decision, in response to a challenge by Republican and unaffiliated voters, found Trump ineligible under the constitutional provision barring those who "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" from holding public office. The US Supreme Court has not yet addressed a separate appeal from the Colorado Republican Party on the same matter.

The legal battle has put the US Supreme Court, with its conservative majority including three Trump-appointed justices, into a highly charged political dispute.&nbsp;

Trump's spokesperson, Steven Cheung, applauded the decision, and claimed that the disqualification attempts were a "well-funded effort by left-wing political activists."

<h2>What does it mean</h2>

The Colorado case not only poses challenges to Trump's presidential aspirations but also places the Supreme Court in a precarious position. The outcome will likely influence wider efforts to disqualify Trump from other state ballots, with implications reaching beyond Colorado and Maine, where similar legal battles are underway.

The year 2024 will see multiple elections worldwide- from choosing prime ministers, presidents, and their administrations, and also heads of parliaments, and international agencies. In the run-up to these elections, there have been discussions of the top contenders, their stronghold constituencies, the public's mood, and result predictions. A victory in any of these elections would change the course of global politics, trade, diplomacy, and security.

The most important elections to look out for are the general elections in India, South Africa, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and&nbsp;Pakistan. The presidential elections that will grab headlines in 2024 include those in the United States, Russia, Croatia, Finland, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.

Also in 2024, elections will be held for the European Parliament and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Here's a look at the most important elections:

The right-wing ruling party will be in a battle&nbsp;with the recently formed INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance)&nbsp;alliance- a group of 28 opposition parties including the Congress, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).&nbsp;Recently, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee proposed Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's name as a prime ministerial candidate. The BJP and its allies have not declared a PM face yet.&nbsp;

<h3>2) Presidential election: US</h3>

However, the Volodymyr Zelensky government enacted martial law in response to the Russian offensive on Feb 24, 2022 due to whihc the country cannot hold elections. On Nov 3, Ukrainian Foreign Minister&nbsp;Dmytro Kuleba said that President Zelensky was weighing the pros and cons of the election.&nbsp;

India's Lok Sabha election to US presidential poll: What to expect in 2024

Former United States President Donald Trump recently came under fire for his remarks against immigrants which many have said echoes those of Adolf Hitler’s mentioned in his manifesto “Mein Kampf.” However, during a rally in the US state of Iowa, the Republican frontrunner insisted that he never even read the book, while also doubling down on his inflammatory language.

<h2>‘I never read Mein Kampf’: Trump</h2>

“It’s true that they’re destroying the blood of our country. That’s what they’re doing – they’re destroying our country,” said the former US president during a rally in Iowa&nbsp;late Tuesday (Dec 19).&nbsp;

Last week, Trump renewed his stringent immigration stance, declaring that undocumented immigrants were “poisoning the blood of our country.” The rhetoric, previously dubbed as xenophobic, sparked a firestorm of criticism over the weekend.&nbsp;

A White House spokesperson also described Trump’s comments as fascist-like and accused him of “echoing the grotesque rhetoric of fascists and violent white supremacists.”&nbsp;

Last month, President Joe Biden accused his predecessor of echoing Hitler when he described political opponents as “vermin.”

In response to Trump’s latest remarks, the reelection campaign for Biden took to X&nbsp;on Wednesday (Dec 20) and published an image noting three similar comments from Trump and statements from Hitler with the caption, “This is not a coincidence.”

The former president’s recent rhetoric was also slammed by prominent Republican figure and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell who said that Trump did not hesitate to appoint&nbsp;Elaine Chao, a Taiwanese American and McConnell's wife, to serve as secretary of Transportation in 2016. &nbsp;

“It strikes me that didn’t bother him when he appointed Elaine Chao the secretary of Transportation,” said McConnell when asked about Trump’s controversial comments.&nbsp;

Trump insists he hasn’t read Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf’ after backlash on remarks against migrants

In a massive blow to Republican frontrunner Donald Trump's campaign for the upcoming United States presidential election, the Colorado Supreme Court&nbsp;on Tuesday (Dec 19) barred him from appearing on the state’s ballots over his role in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters.&nbsp;

The landmark decision that has deemed that the former president is not an eligible presidential candidate, has been placed on hold pending appeal until next month and does not apply to states outside Colorado.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign said it would “swiftly file an appeal” to the US Supreme Court, where conservatives hold a six to three majority. Three of them had been appointed by the former president.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the Colorado court rule?</h2>

The 4-3 ruling from the state’s top court makes Trump the first presidential candidate in US history to be deemed ineligible for the White House under a rarely used provision of the American Constitution that bars officials who have engaged in “insurrection or rebellion” from holding office.

While the ruling applies only to Colorado’s March 5 Republican primary, it could affect Trump’s status in the state for the general elections on November 5.&nbsp;

“We do not reach these conclusions lightly. We are mindful of the magnitude and weight of the questions now before us,” the justices wrote in their ruling.&nbsp;

They added, “We are likewise mindful of our solemn duty to apply the law, without fear or favor, and without being swayed by public reaction to the decisions that the law mandates we reach.”&nbsp;

The Colorado Supreme Court’s decision does not go into effect until at least January 4, 2024.

The recent verdict which invokes Section 3 of the US Constitution’s 14th Amendment for the first time to disqualify a presidential candidate also reverses an earlier ruling from a Colorado judge who said that the insurrection ban did not apply to presidents since it does not explicitly name them.

This was after the lower court had established that the former president had participated in the insurrection at the US Capitol by inciting his supporters to violence but said that as president, Trump was not an “officer of the United States” who could be disqualified under the amendment.

In a massive blow to Republican frontrunner Donald Trump's campaign for the upcoming United States presidential election, the Colorado Supreme Court on Tuesday (Dec 19) barred him from appearing on the state’s ballots over his role in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters.

The landmark decision that has deemed that the former president is not an eligible presidential candidate, has been placed on hold pending appeal until next month and does not apply to states outside Colorado. Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign said it would “swiftly file an appeal” to the US Supreme Court, where conservatives hold a six to three majority. Three of them had been appointed by the former president. Trump barred from Colorado ballot for role in January 6 attack on US Capitol

The incumbent United States President Joe Biden’s administration, on Sunday (Dec 17) condemned former President Donald Trump for what they described as fascist-like rhetoric after he said undocumented immigrants are <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-renews-hard-line-stance-on-immigration-claims-migrants-poisoning-blood-of-america-670420">“poisoning the blood of our country”</a>. Trump was also accused of “praising dictators” when he quoted Russian President Vladimir Putin at a rally.&nbsp;

The remarks by the former president were made at a rally in the US state of New Hampshire, on Saturday (Dec 16) which will vote on a Republican candidate to face Democrat Biden for the upcoming 2024 presidential election.&nbsp;

<h2>White House responds to Trump’s remarks</h2>

“Echoing the grotesque rhetoric of fascists and violent white supremacists and threatening to oppress those who disagree with the government are dangerous attacks on the dignity and rights of all Americans, on our democracy, and on public safety,” said White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates.&nbsp;

He added, “It’s the opposite of everything we stand for as Americans.” White House also condemned Trump for trying to “tear Americans apart with hate and cruelty” and said Biden believes “our leaders have a responsibility to bring the country together around our shared values.”

This comes a day after the Biden campaign took a shot at Trump’s remarks at the rally and compared them to those of Adolf Hitler.&nbsp;

“Tonight Donald Trump channeled his role models as he parroted Adolf Hitler, praised Kim Jong Un, and quoted Vladimir Putin while running for president on a promise to rule as a dictator and threaten American democracy,” said Biden-Harris campaign spokesperson Ammar Moussa, on Saturday.&nbsp;

<h2>Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric</h2>

While Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric about immigrants is nothing new, it does come days after he said that he would act on immigration – one of the most divisive issues in the US – like a “dictator” but <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-trump-says-he-wont-be-a-dictator-if-he-becomes-president-american-media-lawmakers-say-otherwise-666905">in his words</a>, only on the first day if he becomes the president.&nbsp;

“They poisoning the blood of our country,” said Trump during the rally, adding that immigrants are flooding the US from Asia and Africa, in addition to South America.&nbsp;

The rhetoric, previously criticised as xenophobic, resurfaced during a fiery rally in Durham where he addressed a crowd of several thousand supporters.&nbsp;

“When they let, I think the real number is 15, 16 million people, into our country, when they do that, we got a lot of work to do,” said Trump, without giving evidence for the numbers. He also went on to quote Putin, who had previously praised for the invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

“Even Vladimir Putin...says that Biden’s – and this is a quote – politically motivated persecution of his political rival is very good for Russia, because it shows the rottenness of the American political system,” said the former president.&nbsp;

Trump also reportedly praised Hungary’s authoritarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in his remarks.

<h2>‘He’s becoming crazier’</h2>

The Republican frontrunner was also criticised by members of his own party, including former New Jersey governor and White House hopeful Chris Christie. “He’s becoming crazier,” he told CNN.&nbsp;

He added, “We can’t beat Joe Biden with someone who talks that way about immigrants to this country.” Christie, who has emerged as Trump’s most outspoken critic, also accused him of “dog-whistling to Americans who feel under stress and strain from the economy and conflicts around the world.”&nbsp;

Biden slams Trump for 'fascist-like rhetoric' against migrants and 'praising dictators'

United States Senator and Republican White House hopeful Tim Scott abruptly ended his run for the 2024 presidential election nomination on Sunday (Nov 12), amid reports of spending campaign cash at a blistering rate without making significant progress in the national opinion polls.&nbsp;

The development also took Scott’s donors and campaign staff by surprise as it comes just months ahead of the beginning of the voting in Iowa’s leadoff GOP caucuses. The caucuses typically kick off the Republican selection process for a nominee and unlike primary elections, are contests planned, financed and carried out by the parties as opposed to the state officials.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Not now Tim’</h2>

The announcement was made on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Night in America” with Trey Gowdy where the South Carolina senator said, “But when I go back to Iowa, it will not be as a presidential candidate. I am suspending my campaign. I think the voters, who are the most remarkable people on the planet, have been really clear that they’re telling me: ‘Not now Tim.’”

The lone Black Republican in the US Senate, who began his campaign in May had promised to present an optimistic, forward-looking vision for America. However, he has so far failed to establish himself in recent debates as well as has had trouble gaining traction in the polls, despite millions spent on his behalf by high-profile donors.

Notably, Scott is backed by many major donors partly because they believe that he would have a high chance of beating Democratic President Joe Biden, that is if he were to emerge as the Republican nominee.&nbsp;

During the interview, Scott said he wouldn’t immediately be endorsing any of his remaining Republican rivals. “The voters are really smart,” said the South Carolina senator, adding that “The best way for me to be helpful is to not weigh in on who they should endorse.”

He also ruled out serving as the vice president since the number 2 slot “has never been on my to-do list for this campaign, and it’s certainly not there now.”&nbsp;

<h2>Surprise announcement</h2>

Scott dropped out of the presidential race so abruptly that one of his campaign workers told The Associated Press that his campaign staff found out about the news by watching the show.&nbsp;

According to the report, just 13 minutes before he announced his departure, his campaign sent out an email soliciting supporters for donations to further Scott’s “strong leadership and optimistic, positive vision to lead our country forward.”

The campaign staffers also expressed their extreme irritation to the AP after Scott recently shifted staff and money from New Hampshire to Iowa in an effort to boost his standing in the leadoff caucus, only to completely reverse the move after they worked around the clock to make it happen.&nbsp;

Meanwhile,&nbsp;two major donors to his campaign told Reuters they would switch their support to&nbsp;former US&nbsp;Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.
