'Biden stumbles as Trump spreads falsehoods': How the US media reported the debate

Former United States president Donald Trump's campaign released two 30-second ads on Thursday (Jun 27), just a few hours ahead of the debate with President Joe Biden.

This is the first of the two televised face-offs ahead of the presidential election in November. Voters' eyes will be on both politicians with experts saying that the debates could prove critical in their tight rematch race.

The first ad is labelled as "Who's Laughing Now". It contains images of various gaffes of Biden, including stumbling on the stairs of Air Force One, falling over while clipped into his bike and appearing lost on stage.

The narrator further says "And you know who's waiting behind him, right?" when an image of Vice President Harris appears on the screen. "Vote Joe Biden today, and Kamala Harris tomorrow," it adds.

The second ad is titled "Promises". It consists of headlines about inflation, the situation at the southern border and withdrawal from Afghanistan. It asks voters whether or not they are better off financially since Biden took office. It also contains questions if the country is more secure.

The narrator says, "After four years of failure under Joe Biden, it's time to make America prosperous and strong again."

Trump campaign releases two ads targeting Joe Biden ahead of presidential debate - Watch

Former United States President Donald Trump, who is known for his often dehumanising and inflammatory remarks against immigrants, has said he had floated the idea of a “migrant league of fighters” to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) chief Dana White.

During his campaign speeches on Saturday (June 22), the presumptive Republican presidential nominee also backed the controversial plan of displaying the Ten Commandments in schools and elsewhere.

‘Migrant league of fighters’

“I said, ‘Dana I have an idea. Why don’t you set up a migrant league of fighters and have your regular league fighters,” Trump told a crowd of conservative Christians at a Faith and Freedom Coalition gathering in Washington DC.

He added, “And then you have the champion of your league – these are the greatest fighters in the world – fight the champion of the migrants. I think the migrants’ guy might win, that’s how tough they are.”

Trump went on to say that White “didn’t like that idea too much, but actually, it’s not the worst idea I’ve ever had.”

Trump repeated the comments at a campaign rally in the US city of Philadelphia, where he sought to court Black voters, later on Saturday.

The former president has repeatedly come under fire for his inflammatory language while speaking about migrants.

Earlier this year, the Republican said he thought undocumented migrants who commit violent crimes are “not humans” but “animals.”

In December, Trump insisted that he never even read Adolf Hitler’s manifesto Mein Kampf after he said immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country” and was accused of using Nazi rhetoric.

Biden campaign responds

The incumbent US president and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign responded to Trump’s latest remarks calling them “incoherent” and “unhinged”.

“Fitting that convicted felon Donald Trump spent his time at a religious conference threatening to round up Latinos, bragging about ripping away Americans’ freedoms, and promising to be even more extreme if he regains power,” said a spokesperson for the Biden campaign, Sarafina Chitika.

She added, “Trump’s incoherent, unhinged tirade showed voters in his own words that he is a threat to our freedoms and is too dangerous to be let anywhere near the White House again.”

Trump backs controversial law

While speaking to the group of evangelicals Trump said they “cannot afford to sit on the sidelines” during the upcoming election.

He also endorsed displaying the Ten Commandments days after the US state of Louisiana passed a controversial law requiring the list of religious precepts to be displayed in every public school classroom.

The opponents of the law have said that they will challenge in court the new mandate, which raises questions about the constitutional separation of church and state.

“Has anyone read the ‘Thou shalt not steal’? I mean, has anybody read this incredible stuff? It’s just incredible,” Trump said on Saturday. He added, “They don’t want it to go up. It’s a crazy world.’’

The former president’s remarks were met with cheers, as he sought the support of the religious right ahead of the election in November.

US Presidential debate: Biden wins coin flip for CNN debate, picks podium position

United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday (Jun 18) announced a programme which would pave the way for hundreds of thousands of undocumented spouses and stepchildren of American citizens to receive citizenship.

About the programme

The sweeping initiative could provide relief to as many as 500,000 spouses who have lived in the US for at least 10 years as of June 17. It would also allow around 50,000 stepchildren under age 21 with a US citizen parent to gain citizenship,

The move will provide relief to hundreds of thousands of “mixed-status” families in the country.

“These eligible non-citizens who have lived here for 10 years or more have deep family and community ties in the United States,” a senior official from the Biden administration told reporters, as quoted by the Guardian.

“Many of these families include US citizen children, yet they live in fear and face deep uncertainty about their future,” the official added.

The programme also allows spouses and children to apply for permanent residence without leaving the US, getting rid of a potentially lengthy process and family separation. It would also allow them to eventually apply for an American citizenship.

Biden criticises Trump

Speaking at a White House event marking the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals programme, or DACA, Biden, unveiling the new plan, criticised his predecessor Donald Trump for separating migrant families at the US-Mexico border.

He also slammed the former president for his incendiary language about immigrants, including the time when he said they were "poisoning the blood of our country."

"It's hard to believe it's being said, but he's actually saying these things out loud. And it's outrageous," said the US president.

He added, "I'm not interested in playing politics with the border or immigration. I'm interested in fixing it."

DACA, launched in 2012 by former President Barack Obama and then-Vice President Biden, protects nearly 530,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children from being deported.

Immigration policies and elections

With less than five months left for the presidential election, Biden and his rival, Trump have spoken about how they would handle immigration if they take over the White House. Immigration is arguably one of the most divisive issues in the US.

Initially, Biden, a Democrat, said that he would reverse many restrictive immigration policies of the Trump era, but amid a record rise in the migrant arrests on the US-Mexico border, the incumbent president has toughened his approach in recent months.

Earlier this month, Biden signed an order barring most migrants crossing the border from requesting asylum, a policy similar to his Republican predecessor.

Meanwhile, Trump has vowed a harsher immigration crackdown if he secures a second term in the White House, including the largest mass deportation campaign in US history.

In the latest legal setback for Donald Trump, New York’s highest court on Tuesday (Jun 18) declined to hear the former US president’s appeal on the gag order in his hush-money case.

No ‘substantial’ constitutional issues

The New York Court of Appeals found that the gag order imposed against Trump does not raise “substantial” constitutional issues which warrant an immediate intervention, reported the Associated Press.

This comes after the former president’s lawyers filed a notice of appeal with the state’s high court over a month ago amid the ongoing trial to determine if Trump falsified business records to hide a hush money payment to adult film actor Stormy Daniels.

The jury found the former US president guilty on each of the 34 charges against him.

In the notice of appeal filed on May 15, Trump’s attorneys argued that the gag order restricted his “core political speech on matters of central importance at the height of his Presidential campaign.”

They also said that the case presents “substantial constitutional questions of the highest importance.”

However, New York’s highest court disagreed.

The court said it would not automatically hear the case and wrote that “no substantial constitutional question is directly involved,” in its decision.

Meanwhile, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office, in their filing, urged the court to dismiss the appeal and said that Trump has a “well-documented history of leveling threatening, inflammatory, and denigrating remarks against trial participants.”

About Trump’s gag order

Judge Juan Merchan, who oversaw the trial, had imposed a gag order on Trump weeks before the court proceedings had begun upon the prosecutors’ request to block him from speaking about the witnesses.

This was after the prosecutors raised concerns about the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s tendency to attack people involved in his cases.

During the trial, Merchan held the former president in contempt of court and fined him $10,000 for violating the gag order. He also threatened to put Trump in jail if he did it again.

The order remains in effect weeks after the conclusion of the trial and might stay in place till July 11, when the former president is scheduled to be sentenced.

The United States President and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, on Friday (May 17) launched a fresh bid to win over Black voters amid dwindling support months ahead of the presidential election. In a speech at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in downtown Washington, Biden greeted his audience by declaring, “Black history is American history.”

Joe Biden launches fresh bid to win over Black voters amid dwindling support ahead of presidential elections

The former United States President Donald Trump’s ex-lawyer turned foe Michael Cohen returned to the witness stand, on Tuesday (May 14) amid the ongoing historic criminal trial of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. This comes a day after Cohen, a key witness, testified that the former president had personally authorised him to make hush money payment to a porn star weeks ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

About Cohen’s testimony

At the beginning of his testimony, Trump’s former lawyer recounted an Oval Office meeting with Trump in February 2017 when the former president had just been inaugurated saying that he would receive his first two instalments of a bonus package.

The package in question, Cohen testified, included reimbursements for the hush money payment made to Daniels. The ex-Trump lawyer was asked about a series of invoices and checks – some of them signed by the former president himself – by Prosecutor Susan Hoffinger.

Cohen said that those were falsely marked as paying for retainer services. “There was no retainer agreement, was there?” asked Hoffinger, as per Reuters, to which Cohen responded by saying “No, ma’am.”

Eight of the false checks were personally signed by Trump, reported the news agency. Trump's former lawyer also admitted that he repeatedly lied on behalf of the Republican.

"In order to protect Mr. Trump, to stay on message, to demonstrate my continued loyalty," Cohen testified.

After his home was raided by the FBI in 2018, the star witness said that Trump calmed him down. "He said to me, ‘Don’t worry, I’m the President of the United States, there’s nothing here...I felt reassured because I had the President of the United States protecting me," Cohen said.

Cohen, the prosecution’s star witness, took to the stand once again on Tuesday where he also was grilled by Trump attorney Todd Blanche after which he admitted to calling the former president a "dictator douchebag" on TikTok.

The cross-examination was predictably tense with Blanche questioning Cohen about his social media posts about Trump, and continued amid rapid-fire objections from Hoffinger.

On Monday (May 13), when the former lawyer first testified he said that he had spoken to Trump immediately after wiring the $130,000 hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels and that it was one of the many times he worked “at the direction of and for the benefit” of the former president.

The former president is on trial based on the charges stemming from hush money allegedly paid to Daniels, 45, ahead of the 2016 presidential election. The prosecutors have alleged that Trump falsified business records to cover up the payment that Cohen made to the adult film actress in the run-up to the election.

House Speaker, Republican governors in court

The court also witnessed an entourage of Republican supporters along with Trump on Tuesday, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson.

Before entering the Manhattan courthouse, Johnson parroted Trump’s rhetoric and said that the justice system is being “weaponized” against the former president and is “not about justice” but rather “all about politics.”

While Trump has been barred by the gag order to not talk about those involved in the case, he seemed to have pushed the House Speaker to do his bidding as Johnson criticised Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg – who brought the case against Trump – and other court officials as partisans, reported the Associated Press.

He also called Cohen “a man who is clearly on a mission for personal revenge” and “has trouble with the truth.”

Other Republican supporters of the former president included his former GOP rival Vivek Ramaswamy, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, and US Representatives from Florida, Byron Donalds and Cory Mills.

Notably, Burgum and Donalds are on Trump’s long list of potential vice presidential contenders.

New York court rejects Trump's appeal

In a five-page ruling, a New York court, on Tuesday rejected Trump's bid to lift the gag order imposed by Judge Juan Merchan who is overseeing the hush money trial.

The judge "properly weighed petitioner's First Amendment Rights against the court's historical commitment to ensuring the fair administration of justice in criminal cases, and the right of persons related or tangentially related to the criminal proceedings from being free from threats, intimidation, harassment, and harm," said the ruling.

So far, judge Merchan has held Trump in contempt of court for violating the gag order 10 times and fined him $1,000 per violation. The former president, last week, was also warned that he could be sent to jail for future violations.

Hush money trial: Trump’s fixer-turned-foe, Michael Cohen, returns to the witness stand

With less than six months left for the United States presidential elections, it seems like the country will witness a close race between former President Donald Trump and his successor Joe Biden, yet again. A recent survey, on Monday (May 13) suggested that Trump has maintained his narrow lead in five key battleground states with voters expressing their discontent with Biden’s handling of the economy and the war in Gaza.

What did the poll find?

The survey conducted by The New York Times, Siena College and The Philadelphia Inquirer found that Trump was leading among registered voters in five of the six key states – Michigan (49 per cent to 42 per cent), Arizona (49 per cent to 42 per cent), Nevada (50 per cent to 38 per cent), Georgia (49 per cent to 39 per cent) and Pennsylvania (47 per cent to 44 per cent).

According to the report, the incumbent president has a narrow lead among registered voters in only one battleground state, Wisconsin with 47 per cent to 45 per cent. Notably, Biden had secured a victory in all six states in the last presidential election in 2020.

The NYT report noted that the results have remained “mostly unchanged” since the last series of polls in November. Since then, one of the four criminal cases against Trump went to trial in Manhattan, while Biden’s campaign poured tens of millions of dollars in advertisements across the key states.

The polls show that issues like the rising cost of living, immigration, Israel’s war in Gaza and a desire for change have affected the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee’s campaign. Nearly 70 per cent of voters believe the American political and economic systems need major changes or “even to be torn down entirely.”

Biden and Trump are mostly tied among young (18-to-29-year-olds) and Hispanic voters, according to the poll.

Notably, the former president has surprisingly gained the support of more than 20 per cent of Black voters – the highest level of Black support for any Republican presidential candidate since 1964.

Robert F Kennedy Jr to sway the election?

The latest poll also found that independent Robert F Kennedy Jr’s candidacy has the potential to sway the election. According to the report, Kennedy Jr won an average of 10 per cent of the vote across the six states.

Earlier surveys had suggested that Kennedy Jr, who is a part of the country’s most famous Democratic family, could win more votes than Biden. However, more recent reports suggest that he could hurt Trump’s campaign.

Notably, the candidacy of the nephew of 35th US President John F Kennedy had been opposed by his entire family, who have since voiced their support for Biden.

According to the report, Kennedy Jr won an average of 10 per cent of the vote across the six states. However, more recent reports suggest that he could hurt Trump’s campaign. Notably, the candidacy of the nephew of 35th US President John F Kennedy had been opposed by his entire family, who have since voiced their support for Biden. US presidential election: Trump maintains lead over Biden in five key battleground states, shows poll

The former United States President Donald Trump lambasted his successor Joe Biden and called him a “total moron” during a rally at Wildwood, New Jersey. Meanwhile, Biden, on Saturday (May 11) called Trump “clearly unhinged” and said “something snapped” after the Republican lost the 2020 presidential elections.

‘Total moron’

In true Trump fashion, the former president lashed out during a recent campaign rally with an estimated 80,000-100,000 supporters in attendance on Saturday evening in New Jersey calling Biden the worst president.

“You could take the 10 worst presidents in the history of our country, and add them up... and they haven’t done the damage to our country that this total moron has done,” said the former president.

He added, “He’s a fool, he’s not a smart man. He never was.” He also promised the hordes of his supporters that he would win New Jersey, a deep blue state that hasn’t voted for a Republican for president since 1988.

In the 90-minute speech, Trump also gave the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg a new nickname – “Fat Alvin.” The Manhattan DA brought the 34-count indictment against the former president in New York for falsifying business records to cover the hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Trump, who has spent weeks sitting in the Manhattan court for his historic criminal trial, also blamed the US president for his many legal woes even though there is no evidence that the US president is involved in the case in any way.

“I am being forced to endure a Biden show trial, all done by Biden,” said Trump, adding that the trial is being carried out by “radical Democrat District Attorney…you know who he is? Fat Alvin, corrupt guy.”

Trump also went off-track and called fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter, a “wonderful man” and claimed that his rallies drew bigger crowds than Bruce Springsteen concerts.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee who is grappling with four indictments also claimed that he has been “indicted more than the great Alphonse Capone,” a violent Prohibition-era mob boss from the city of Chicago.

‘Unhinged’

“It’s clear that…when he lost in 2020, something snapped in him,” Biden told supporters at a private fundraiser Saturday, as quoted by CNN.

He added, “He’s not only obsessed with losing in 2020, he’s clearly unhinged. Just listen to what he’s telling people.”

The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Biden said that the upcoming presidential election will be “close” and “we feel good about the state of the race.”

The former United States President and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, on Saturday (May 11) took to his social media platform and said he is not considering his rival Nikki Haley as his running mate and potential vice president, dismissing a report by news website Axios.

‘Not under consideration’

Trump, 77, took to his social media platform Truth Social and said “Nikki Haley is not under consideration for the V.P. slot, but I wish her well!”

A report by Axios, earlier on Saturday, citing sources said Haley was ‘under active consideration’ by Trump’s campaign to be his running mate.

This comes as the Republican frontrunner is yet to pick his running mate and potential VP with the presidential elections just months away.

Trump could pick Haley, the former South Carolina governor and US ambassador to the United Nations if he were convinced she’d help him win the presidency, avoid a potential prison sentence and cover tens of millions in legal bills if he loses, Axios had reported earlier.

The former governor dropped her long-shot bid for the presidency in March after Trump dominated in Republican primaries.

Notably, after dropping out of the race, Haley did not endorse the former president who once called her a “birdbrain.”

The former governor is yet to respond to the latest reports, but before the New Hampshire primaries. Earlier this year, she had definitively nixed the idea telling voters that the idea of being the VP is “off the table”.

Who is Trump planning to pick?

So far, Trump has had a long list of potential candidates for the VP position which includes names like North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, Senators Marco Rubio, Tim Scott and J.D. Vance and New York congresswoman Elise Stefanik.

However, chances of Noem being on that list or in the running seem low as she has recently come under fire for killing her 14-month-old dog and writing about it in her book.

‘I wish her well’: Donald Trump says not considering Nikki Haley for VP

US President Joe Biden poked fun at Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, while seeking to portray his Republican rival as a threat to democracy six months before their rematch. Watch in for more details!

US President Joe Biden pokes fun at GOP rival Donald Trump's legal troubles

The United States President and Presumptive Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden, on Friday (Apr 26) said that he would participate in a debate with his predecessor and Republican opponent in the upcoming election Donald Trump.

‘I’m happy to debate him’

This is the first time that Biden signalled that he is willing to debate Trump ahead of the upcoming elections as well as the clearest yet on the prospect of a presidential debate.

“I am, somewhere. I don’t know when,” said the incumbent president during an hour-long interview with broadcaster Howard Stern. Biden added, “I’m happy to debate him.”

This comes as Biden has not previously committed to debate Trump. Last month, the incumbent US president said that his commitment to a debate with his predecessor “depends on his behavior”.

Similarly, when asked about the debate during a trip to Nevada in February, Biden said “If I were him, I’d want him to debate me, too. He’s got nothing else to do.”

‘ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE’

In response to Biden’s interview, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social and wrote, “Crooked Joe Biden just announced that he’s willing to debate! Everyone knows he doesn’t really mean it, but in case he does, I say ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE…”

It is worth noting that the former president has refused to debate his rivals before winning the Republican primary race last month. However, given his latest post it seems like he is eager for a one-on-one match with his successor.

Biden and Trump had last faced each other in two televised presidential election debates in 2020.

Earlier this month, a dozen leading American news organisations urged candidates to publicly commit to debating each other. The statement suggests that debates for the current race be sponsored by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates.

However, Trump and the GOP have had a turbulent relationship with the nonpartisan group that has organised general election debates since 1988.

In 2022, the Republican National Committee (RNC) unanimously voted to ban future GOP presidential nominees from participating in debates organised by the committee, while then-RNC chair Ronna McDaniel called the Commission “biased”.

Meanwhile, the Biden campaign is reportedly concerned that once on stage Trump will not abide by rules set by the Commission, while some of the incumbent president’s advisers said they prefer not to elevate Trump by putting him on the same stage as Biden.

Biden says he is ‘happy to debate’ Trump ahead of elections in November

One in three Americans aren't convinced that former United States president Donald Trump committed a crime, according to a recent poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The second day of the historic trial in New York began on Tuesday (Apr 16) with the Republican frontrunner in a Manhattan courtroom for the jury selection.

What did the poll find?

On Monday (Apr 15), Trump, 77, set yet another record by becoming the first-ever former US president to go on trial for criminal charges which stem from the case where he has been accused of paying hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels and falsifying business records to cover the payments.

The AP-NORC poll found that one-third of American adults surveyed believe that Trump did something illegal in the case. The former president has three other criminal cases pending against him.

Notably, only half of Americans would consider the presumptive Republican presidential nominee unfit for the presidency if he were to get convicted in the case, according to the poll.

While a jury would decide if Trump is guilty or not, the report by AP-NORC suggests that a conviction could hurt the former president’s campaign as it seems all but certain that the upcoming presidential election will be a rematch between him and his successor Joe Biden.

However, Trump has repeatedly called the cases against him politically motivated and that Biden engineered them. The rhetoric has helped him garner GOP support, but has not swayed the independents, reported AP.

The poll of 1,204 adults was conducted between April 4 and 8 and also showed that only three in 10 believe that the prosecutors are treating Trump fairly.

The report also said that only two in 10 Americans are extremely or very confident that the judges and jurors in the cases against him can be fair and impartial.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to the 34-count indictment, brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, which includes charges of accounting fraud and falsifying business records to cover up the $130,000 payment to Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

The former president has also denied having sex with Daniels. However, at least 35 per cent of Americans believe that Trump has done something illegal with regard to the hush money allegations, as per the AP-NORC poll.

Republicans are reportedly much less likely than Democrats and independents to say that the former president committed a crime in the hush money case, with nearly six in 10 saying that they would consider Trump fit to be president even if he were to be convicted of falsifying business documents.

Second day of the trial

Manhattan Assistant DA Joshua Steinglass told the 18 prospective jurors – who are what remained of the initial pool of 96 – that the case had nothing to do with their personal politics.

“This case is really not about whether you like Donald Trump,” said the Manhattan Assistant DA, adding it is about “the rule of law and whether Donald Trump broke it.”

This comes after Judge Juan Merchan had to dismiss some potential jurors after they confessed that they could not impartially decide if Trump was guilty or not. At the end of the first day, no jurors were selected.

Only one-third of Americans think Trump did something illegal as hush money trial gets underway

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has paid more than one million to lawyers who represented United States President Joe Biden in the special counsel probe into his handling of classified documents, federal records showed.

This comes as Democrats, including those in the Biden administration, have previously lambasted former US President Donald Trump for using campaign funds to deal with his mounting legal fees.

What do the records show?

The DNC has paid around $1.5 million to a law firm and the US president’s personal attorney Bob Bauer since July, according to the filings with the Federal Election Commission.

As Biden and Trump are headed for a rematch in the upcoming presidential elections in November, the incumbent president has repeatedly criticised his predecessor for using donor funds to pay his legal fees.

The Republicans were quick to point at the financial records and call Democrats “corrupt” and hypocrites. “If these corrupt Democrats didn’t have HYPOCRISY, they’d have NOTHING!” the Republican National Committee said, in a post on X, on Friday (Apr 12).

However, the use of the party’s funds to cover Biden’s legal bills is not without precedent and falls within the bounds of campaign finance law.

The money for Biden’s legal team comes from the DNC’s legal account, which is primarily funded by major donors who have already met contribution limits, reported the Associated Press.

Since the beginning of last year, the DNC paid nearly $905,000 to the firm Hemenway & Barnes whose attorney, Jennifer Miller was identified in Hur’s final report as a “personal counsel” for the president.

It is also worth noting that while the national party had been paying the firm since 2020, the amount rose last year.

However, it is still far from the more than $100 million in donor money that the former president’s campaign has used to deal with his many legal woes as he faces 88 criminal charges in four separate indictments.

‘There’s no comparison’

The funds, according to the report by Axios, were used to pay lawyers or firms, including Bauber who represented Biden during the investigation by special counsel Robert Hur into his handling and retention of classified documents.

The US president had come under fire last year when his attorneys first acknowledged that he had been in possession of classified documents from when he served as the vice president in the Barack Obama administration from 2009 to 2017.

However, speaking about Biden’s legal fees, DNC spokesman Alex Floyd, said “There is no comparison.”

“The DNC does not spend a single penny of grassroots donors’ money on legal bills, unlike Donald Trump, who actively solicits legal fees from his supporters and has drawn down every bank account he can get his hands on like a personal piggy bank,” he added.

However, speaking about Biden’s legal fees, DNC spokesman Alex Floyd, said “There is no comparison.” “The DNC does not spend a single penny of grassroots donors’ money on legal bills, unlike Donald Trump, who actively solicits legal fees from his supporters and has drawn down every bank account he can get his hands on like a personal piggy bank,” he added. Democratic donors paid more than $1 million in legal fees for Biden’s classified documents probe

Former United States president Donald Trump, on Monday (Apr 8) said that he believes that the decision regarding abortion rights should be left up to the US states, but did not mention his position on a national abortion ban.

What did Trump say?

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee weighed in on one of the most contentious issues in American politics months ahead of the upcoming elections in November, in a video post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump has previously indicated support for a 15-week federal ban with exceptions for rape, incest and to protect the life of the mother. He also reiterated his support for the availability of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

“My view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both. And whatever they decide must be the law of the land. In this case, the law of the state,” said the former president.

He also said that many states will be “different” and have “different number of weeks, or some will have more conservative than others, and that’s what they will be. At the end of the day, this is all about the will of the people,” Trump added.

However, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee did not mention anything about a national ban to prohibit abortions beyond a certain number of weeks into a pregnancy.

In his video, on Monday, the former president also took credit for overturning the 1973 landmark Supreme Court decision on Roe v Wade which effectively ended the constitutional right to an abortion.

The reversal of the five-decade-old decision has led more than a dozen states to ban or severely restrict women’s ability to access safe and legal abortion.

“This 50-year battle over Roe v. Wade took it out of the federal hands and brought it into the hearts, minds and vote of the people in each state. It was really something. Now it’s up to the states to do the right thing,” said Trump.

Notably, the court’s decision to overturn the landmark decision triggered a backlash among voters and reportedly affected Republican gains in several states during the 2022 midterm elections.

“Donald Trump is endorsing every single abortion ban in the states, including abortion bans with no exceptions. And he’s bragging about his role in creating this hellscape,” said Ammar Moussa, director of rapid response for the Biden campaign, on X, on Monday.

Earlier this month, Biden denounced a ruling by the Florida Supreme Court which allows a six-week ban on abortion to take effect. On April 1, the state’s top court upheld a ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

The incumbent president slammed Republicans for limiting reproductive rights in Florida and other US states saying that it is “putting the health and lives of millions of women at risk.”

Independent US presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr presented Silicon Valley lawyer and philanthropist Nicole Shanahan as his running mate on Tuesday (Mar 26). Shanahan, who is the ex-wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin, has never been in the limelight and has never before run for political office.

Kennedy Jr. (aka RFK Jr.), best known for his anti-Covid vaccine stance and public health conspiracies, is running as an independent candidate in the upcoming US presidential elections. Choosing a running mate is a prerequisite to be on the ballot in several states.

Here’s everything you need to know about Nicole Shanahan:

Nicole Shanahan: Wealthy lawyer and tech entrepreneur with a bare social media presence joins the VP race

Kennedy Jr.’s VP pick of Shanahan came as a wild card as the attorney doesn’t have any kind of public persona and is generally interested in niche policy issues like regenerative agriculture and gut biomes that rarely strike a chord with the commoners. But Shanahan’s abundant wealth can be of immense help for Kennedy Jr.

Born and raised in California, Nicole Shanahan is an American tech entrepreneur, lawyer and philanthropist who has a compelling rags-to-riches story of wealth and success. In one of her interviews with People magazine, she described her childhood as “very hard”. Her mother worked as a maid and accountant after her father passed away after suffering from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Shanahan attended the National University of Singapore and Santa Clara University School of Law. After practising law at various firms, she became the founder and CEO of a legal tech company called ClearAccessIP, based in Palo Alto. She later sold the company to a competitor IPwe in 2020.

After this, she invested in a biotech firm, LinusBio, and joined the board of Extreme Tech Challenge in 2023.

Meanwhile, after all these years of investments, she also established her private foundation, Bia-Echo in 2018.

United States President and Democrat Joe Biden’s re-election campaign had more than double the amount of cash on hand than his predecessor and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump ahead of the presidential election in November, new filings showed, on Wednesday (Mar 20).

Biden overtakes Trump

The cash disparities between Trump and Biden were seen in the filings with the Federal Election Commission which required campaigns to file fundraising and spending reports for last month. However, the report only covers a part of the committees associated with those running for office.

Biden at the end of February, had $71 million in cash available in his main campaign account which is more than double of Trump’s $33.5 million.

The filings show that the former president received more than $3 million in his campaign account in February, which added to the $30 million on hand in January.

However, the incumbent president, which had $56 million by the end of January, added $15 million in February.

While Trump is in the lead in more nationwide polls, Biden and the Democratic Party have a growing cash advantage.

The Democratic National Committee, according to the filing, had more than twice the cash on hand when compared to its Republican counterpart.

However, the report does not show the entire picture since Biden and Trump are raising money through joint fundraising committees which will not file their reports until the end of next month.

A Trump campaign official told CNN that their campaign and joint fundraising committee brought in $20.3 million in February and they entered this month with a combined $41.9 million cash.

The amount still trails behind Biden’s campaign which reported raising a combined $53 million in February across the committees supporting his re-election bid, with a combined total of a whopping $155 million.

Reasons behind the cash gap

Biden, as the current president, reportedly has an advantage over Trump, who became the presumptive Republican nominee only in February.

The cash crunch has also reportedly prompted the former president to have meetings at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida and even host private dinners with the Republican Party’s biggest financiers.

The former president’s lagging in terms of cash could also be attributed to his many legal woes as the filings also show the financial strain it is taking on his campaign. Trump is currently facing four criminal trials.

The financial disclosures of the group called Save America – which raises money together with Trump’s election campaign but is legally separate and reportedly used to underwrite his lawyers’ fees – showed that around $5.6 million was spent on legal bills in February.

The amount spent was the biggest single month of spending on legal bills since Trump formed the organisation in 2020 after his election defeat four years ago.

The filings also show that the group has spent more than $55 million on legal bills since the beginning of last year.

US presidential elections 2024: Will not endorse Trump, says ex-veep Mike Pence

Former United States President Donald Trump, on Saturday (Mar 16) during a rally in the state of Ohio warned that there would be a “bloodbath” if he is not re-elected in the upcoming elections in November.

What did Trump say?

The remarks came during a rally in Ohio where Trump addressed the crowd in support of Republican Senate candidate Bernie Moreno, whom the former president had endorsed in December. In his speech, he also threatened a trade war with China over car manufacturing.

“Let me tell you something…to China, President Xi – and you and I are friends – but he understands the way I deal. Those big monster car manufacturing plants that you are building in Mexico right now…and you think you are not going to hire Americans and sell the cars to us, no,” Trump said.

He added, “We’re going to put a 100 per cent tariff on every single one of those cars that comes across the line…and you are not going to be able to sell those cars. If I get elected, now if I don’t get elected it’s going to be a bloodbath…it’s going to be a bloodbath for the country. That will be the least of it. But they are not going to sell those cars.”

“If this election isn’t won, I’m not sure that you’ll ever have another election in this country,” the former US president later added.

Trump is known for his inflammatory rhetoric and has been called a threat to democracy by his successor particularly since the former president said that he would not be a dictator except for “day one,” back in December.

In response to the former president’s remarks, Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told NBC News, “Biden’s policies will create an economic bloodbath for the auto industry and auto workers.”

‘Wants another January 6’

Biden’s campaign spokesperson James Singer released a statement on Saturday after Trump’s speech saying that the former president “wants another January 6”.

Singer was referring to the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by Trump’s supporters who wanted to stop lawmakers from certifying Biden’s 2020 presidential election win.

“This is who Donald Trump is: a loser who gets beat by over 7 million votes and then instead of appealing to a wider mainstream audience doubles down on his threats of political violence,” Biden’s campaign spokesperson said.

He added, “He wants another January 6, but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge.”

Trump warns of ‘bloodbath’ if he loses 2024 US presidential election in November

United States lawmaker and Republican Congresswoman from the state of Georgia, Marjorie Taylor Greene, told a British journalist to “f*** off” when asked to talk about “Jewish space lasers,” an antisemitic conspiracy theory that the former US president Donald Trump’s possible pick for vice-president once promoted on social media.

What happened?

The heated exchange took place on Super Tuesday (Mar 5) when Emily Maitlis, a British journalist for the News Agents podcast spoke to the Republican Congresswoman during Trump’s victory celebration at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

“Could you tell me why so many people that support Donald Trump love conspiracy theories, including yourself?” the British journalist asked.

To which Greene said, “Well, let me tell you, you’re a conspiracy theorist and the left and the media spreads more conspiracy theories. We like the truth. We like supporting our constitution, our freedoms and America first.”

In a follow-up question, Maitlis asked, “What about Jewish space lasers? Tell us about Jewish space lasers.”

Greene said, “No…Why don’t you go talk about Jewish space lasers and really, why don’t you f*** off? How about that?”

Subsequently, the US Congresswoman walked off, and the British said, “Thank you very much.”

Prior to the exchange, the Maitlis also asked Greene if she was on Trump’s list of potential vice-presidential picks and if Nikki Haley should be on it.

“He’s got a long list. I serve President Trump in any way…he’d ask me but I can assure you it won’t be Nikki Haley.”

US: Marjorie Taylor Greene tells reporter to ‘f*** off’ after question about ‘Jewish space lasers’

The United States Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, on Wednesday (Mar 6) said he would support his party’s frontrunner Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election. This comes more than three years after the Senator for the US state of Kentucky blamed the former president for the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

‘He will have my support’

“It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States,” said McConnell in a statement.

He added, “It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support.” The Senate minority leader also highlighted the “great things” he and Trump had accomplished during his presidency, including picking three conservative justices for the Supreme Court.
