According to the local sheriff’s office, the accused is facing aggravated assault and battery charges.&nbsp;

The incident took place in a small town named Starks, in the state of Louisiana which borders Texas, early Sunday. The man, later identified as David V. Doyle, is currently in the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center on Tuesday morning. The 14-year-old girl, as per the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, suffered a gunshot wound to the back of the head and was taken to the hospital.&nbsp;

As of Monday, the victim’s injuries were not considered as life-threatening. A group of juveniles “were playing hide and seek in the area and were hiding on the neighbour’s property,” said the officials, when Doyle allegedly fired his weapon. The accused told the detectives that “he observed shadows outside his home, at which time he went inside and retrieved his firearm.”&nbsp;

Subsequently, “he went back outside and observed people running away from his property, at which time he began shooting at them and unknowingly hit the girl,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a statement. According to the officials, Doyle was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, and illegal discharge of a firearm.&nbsp;

This comes as the US has faced a number of shooting incidents which have killed several and injured many over seemingly trivial circumstances.&nbsp;

Two high school cheerleaders who approached the wrong car in a Texas parking lot, last month, were shot at, seriously injuring one of them. On the same day, April 18, a six-year-old girl and her father in North Carolina were shot after their basketball reportedly rolled into the alleged shooter’s yard.

A 20-year-old woman, Kaylin Gillis was shot and killed on April 15 when she and her friends mistakenly drove up the wrong driveway in New York when the homeowner allegedly opened fire.&nbsp;

Last month, an&nbsp;84-year-old man allegedly shot a Black teenager, Ralph Yarl, who mistakenly came to his door, when he was supposed to pick up his younger brothers.&nbsp;

One person was reportedly killed and two were left injured in a shooting incident on a Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) train on Sunday in Dallas, Texas, the authorities said, further adding that the suspect is still at large.&nbsp;

DART spokesperson Gordon Shattles said in a statement to CNN that the tragic incident took place after an altercation broke out between two people aboard the train at around 4:30pm (local time).&nbsp;

The verbal fight began over some disagreement between them on the northbound Green Line train near the Hatcher station.&nbsp;

Shattles added that a total of two people were shot and were rushed to a nearby hospital. One of the victims died, the official noted.&nbsp;

DART tweeted that the incident had disrupted the operations of the Green Line train for hours. The authorities were investigating the incident and searching the scene.&nbsp;

US: One killed, two injured in shooting incident on DART train in Dallas

Authorities in the US state of Texas have arrested the wife of Francisco Oropesa, the man accused of fatally shooting five neighbours, said the local prosecutor, on Wednesday (May 3). This comes a day after Oropesa was arrested after a four-day-long manhunt which involved local, state and federal officials.&nbsp;

Oropesa’s arrest

The accused was arrested on Tuesday after he was found in a closet under some laundry in a home in Montgomery County and was taken into custody around 7:00 pm (local time), said the local sheriff’s office.&nbsp;

San Jacinto County Chief Deputy Tim Kean, in a news conference, on Wednesday said that the $5 million bond will be set for the suspected gunman when he appears later before a judge in a local jail where he is being held on five counts of murder.&nbsp;

Oropesa was apprehended in Cut and Shoot, Texas which is a few kilometres away from Cleveland, Texas, where the killings took place, as per media reports citing officials.&nbsp;

The shooting took place after neighbours had asked Oropesa to stop firing his rifle on Friday night when he stepped out of his house and shot rounds with an AR-15-style rifle, San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said on Saturday.

The gunman shot Wilson Garcia, the father of the one-month-old’s wife, Sonia Argentina Guzman, before killing three other adults - Diana Velazquez Alvarado (21), Julisa Molina Rivera (31), Jose Jonathan Casarez (18) - and Garcia’s son, Daniel Enrique Laso-Guzman (8).

Oropesa’s wife arrested

The suspect’s wife, later identified as Divimara Nava, was arrested on Wednesday morning for allegedly helping him evade capture, authorities said. The 52-year-old was charged with “hindering the apprehension of a known felon,” said the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in a statement.&nbsp;

Nava is being held on a $250,000 bond, as per media reports citing jail records, which also list her as “not married,” but sharing a home address with him. However, she has been identified as the wife of the suspect, Oropesa, by law enforcement.&nbsp;

The prosecutors, as per the Associated Press, said the suspect showered and slept at the house outside the city of Conroe on Tuesday while Divimara Lamar Nava got him doughnuts from a nearby store.&nbsp;

According to the prosecutor, she also acknowledged delivering a message from Oropesa to his cousins in the area asking them to help him get out of the country. However, his cousins refused.&nbsp;

The officials have also alleged that the suspect was planning to escape to Mexico and believe Lamar Nava was talking to investigators at the same time she was trying to help Oropesa, San Jacinto County District Attorney Todd Dillon said at a news conference.&nbsp;

The suspect’s supposed wife’s arrest came after she had initially told an FBI agent that she was not aware of Oropesa’s whereabouts and later said he showed up at the house about 1:30 am (local time), Tuesday, reported the AP.&nbsp;

The arrest also comes days after more details were revealed about Oropesa who was first removed by an immigration judge back in 2009. However, the suspect’s current immigration status remains unclear and it is also not known how long he was in the US since last deported.&nbsp;

In a statement, on Monday, the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said that it identified the suspect as a Mexican and confirmed that he was apprehended and deported several times.

AP reports that the two unidentified officers involved in the shooting were not injured and have been placed on administrative leave.

This comes as Florida recently allowed&nbsp;residents to carry concealed guns without a permit.&nbsp;Starting July 1, Floridians who legally own a gun will be able to carry it without requiring a permit, i.e., carrying a concealed weapon in public will now no longer require any training or background checks.

A school teacher in Florida, United States, has been fired for asking students to write their own obituaries. Jeffrey Keene, the dismissed teacher, taught psychology at Dr Phillips high school in the Orlando area. As per a Guardian report, the assignment didn't have malicious intent, rather the teacher just wanted his students to reflect on their own lives as they participate in an active shooter drill. In Florida, a state that in recent days has been plagued by mass shootings, preparations for gun attacks have become commonplace.

Keene had assigned his 11th and 12th-grade students to write their biographical obituaries. As per the 63-year-old teacher, while giving them the assignment, he told the students, "This isn't a way to upset you or anything like that."

Talking to NBC News, Keene said "It wasn't to scare them or make them feel like they were going to die, but just to help them understand what’s important in their lives and how they want to move forward with their lives and how they want to pursue things in their journey."

"If you can't talk real to them, then what's happening in this environment?" he said, adding, "in my mind, I've done nothing wrong."

Vowing to not change his teaching methods, Keene said that he hopes to find another job.

"I don't think I did anything incorrectly," Keene said. "I know hindsight is 20/20, but I honestly didn't think a 16, 17, 18-year-old would be offended or upset by talking about something we're already talking about."

However, a representative for the Orange County School District labelled the assignment "inappropriate".

This, as per experts, can potentially lead to an exponential increase in shootings and gun violence, that has in recent years claimed the lives of many. Among the most heart-wrenching and notorious massacres that Florida has witnessed are the 2016 Pulse nightclub in Orlando and the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Parkland shooting.

The latest gun control measures aims at increasing background checks to buy guns and also promote secure firearms storage. In Louisville, Mississippi, a shooting took place on Sunday (February 13)&nbsp;afternoon in front of a grocery shop, leaving one person dead and five others injured. Devonte McMillian, 23, of Louisville, was identified as the deceased victim by Winston County Deputy Coroner Blake Sheets. McMillian was declared dead at a Jackson hospital, according to WTVA-TV.

In addition to McMillian, two additional people with serious injuries were taken to the hospital. Three patients received less serious injuries that were treated elsewhere, as reported by the Associated Press.&nbsp;Jackson, the state capital of Mississippi, is located about 95 miles (153 km) northeast of Louisville.

As per the&nbsp;Louisville Police Chief Sean Holdiness, there could be&nbsp;several suspects in the shooting, some of whom are thought to be minors. On Sunday night, at least one suspect was in&nbsp;police custody.

In a statement posted to social media, Louisville Mayor Will Hill said law enforcement will continue investigating the incident.

“Today’s tragedy due to gun violence fills me, as I am sure you, with many emotions,” Hill wrote. “We as a community have grown weary of the repeated concerns and effects of gun violence, especially its impact on our youth,” he said.

“Our study really highlights the importance of heat adaptation strategies that can be used all year, as well as a need for specific regional awareness and attention in regions where this relationship is strongest,” said study lead author Dr. Vivian Lyons as quoted by SciTechDaily.

In this study, &nbsp;the researchers made use of the publicly available data from Gun Violence Archive. Gun violence&nbsp;has become so much part of daily life in the United States, the only country with more guns in private hands than people, that mass shootings rarely prompt shock and surprise. But they did in the first weeks of the year because of a sequence of events that spoke volumes of the country’s deep and deadly love affair with guns.

January 6 – A six-year-old boy shot and badly wounded a teacher he disliked with a 9mm handgun he carried into his school in the Virginia city of Newport News in his backpack.

January 17 – A neighbour watching his home security camera spotted a toddler wearing a diaper and waving a pistol wandering the hallway of an apartment building in the city of Beech Grove, Indiana. It’s still not clear how the student and the toddler got access to the weapons.

January 21 – A man using a submachine gun killed 11 people and wounded 10 at a dance hall in Monterey Park, near Los Angeles. The shooter, aged 72, killed himself after the vehicle in which he was fleeing was surrounded by police.

January 24 - Four people were shot dead at a mushroom farm in the Northern Californian town of Half Moon Bay and another three at a nearby farm. The shooter is under arrest.

These incidents established a sad record: the six-year-old student was the youngest shooter in the history of American gun culture. The 72-year-old the oldest. The average age of mass shooters in the US, according to the Rockefeller Institute of Government, a think tank, is 33.

Each act of violence triggers almost identical rituals. TV networks and print media dispatch reporters to interview grieving survivors, analysts ponder on the possible motives, politicians express sympathy – “we send thoughts and prayers” is a favourite phrase – advocacy groups demand tighter controls on the sale of guns, conservatives routinely blame insufficient mental health care.

For the makers of guns, headline-making shootings are a business opportunity. Sales of guns and ammunition routinely spike after each mass shootings. Why? Two reasons, criminologists say. One is to defend themselves in case they are caught in a shooting and the second fear of restrictions on the purchase of firearms – easier in most US&nbsp;states than anywhere else in the world.

Lax gun laws have resulted in a steadily growing number of firearms owned by civilians. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a gun trade association, that number now stands at 434 million. The US&nbsp;Census Bureau’s latest estimate of the population is 333.2 million.

Opponents of tighter gun controls see any proposal – such as deeper background checks for buyers – as a move towards eliminating the Second Amendment of the US&nbsp;constitution which guarantees the right to bear arms.

Its wording has been the centre of fierce debate for many decades. It says: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

It was ratified in 1791, at a time when muskets and flintlock pistols were the typical firearms. They held a single round at a time and it required high skill to fire three rounds&nbsp;in a minute. One can question whether the founders of the constitution would have used similar language had they imagined that the most frequently used firearm used in recent shootings fires 45 rounds a minute?

The US&nbsp;Supreme Court ended years of legal wrangling over the phrase “well regulated militia” with a ruling in 2008 saying the amendment guaranteed an individual the right to possess firearms independent of service in a state militia.

Gun culture is deeply rooted in the history of America, a country founded in armed insurrection against British colonial rule and later in westward expansion by armed settlers. The Wild West, frontier justice, gunslingers and cowboys and Indians are part of American lore, glorified by literature and Hollywood movies.

In America’s federal system, which gives considerable power to the states, regulations on guns vary and some are truly baffling. In Texas, for example, state law forbids the sale of pistols for buyers under 21 years of age. But it allows the sale of “long guns” to people aged 18.

Which is why a young man called Salvador Ramos waited till his 18th birthday to buy the AR-15 assault rifle, legally a “long gun” with which he killed 19 children and two teachers and wounded 17 others at his former elementary school at the city of Uvalde. Police shot and killed him. The “long gun” regulation is still in force.

One phrase that comes to my mind when I think about the US&nbsp;epidemic of violence is “American exceptionalism”, the belief shared by many Americans that their country is inherently superior to others. Those who have even the slightest reservations about that concept tend to face charges of lacking patriotism.

Former president Barack Obama had a taste of this when he answered a question at a NATO conference in 2009 about whether he subscribed to the idea of American exceptionalism. His response: “I believe in American exceptionalism. Just as the Brits believe in British exceptionalism, and the Greeks in Greek exceptionalism.”

Oops! Wrong answer in the eyes of many of his compatriots. But where guns and gun laws and shootings are concerned, there can be no doubt that America is exceptional. Judging from history, it will remain that way.

Numerous high-end credit card providers, including PayPal, Stripe, and Square, prohibit the purchase of firearms. The total cost may be higher overall for credit businesses that do permit purchases due to interest.

Because of this, a lot of people who buy firearms do so with cash. When asked if it is preferable to buy guns with cash or credits in online forums, a lot of people responded in favour of cash.

Meanwhile, when questioned about how users like the Uvalde, Texas, gunman purchased guns through their platform using a debit card, finance companies like Credova, designed for the purpose of permitting instalment plans for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/charles-iii-proclaimed-king-at-historic-ceremony-gun-salutes-fired-across-britain-514884">gun </a>purchases, brush off their role.

Everytown for Gun Safety President John Feinblatt applauded ISO's decision, which was made public on Friday, and stressed the importance of seeing it through to completion.

“Today’s announcement is a critical first step towards giving banks and credit card companies the tools they need to recognize dangerous firearm purchasing trends – like a domestic extremist building up an arsenal – and report them to law enforcement,” he said in a&nbsp;statement&nbsp;shared with the Guardian.

The ISO had been asked for the codes by Amalgamated Bank, which describes itself as a "socially responsible bank."

On Friday, they celebrated their triumph and thanked their supporters, including Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York, and Tish James, the attorney general of New York.

In 2020, more than 300,000 unlawful gun transactions were prevented thanks to FBI background checks, almost twice as many as in 2019.

Highlighting the common sense as well as potentially less obvious mechanisms at play, David Hemenway, a professor of health policy at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, told AFP, "It's hard to shoot somebody if there's nobody around."

While there are many causes behind the rising tide of gun violence in the United States, a controversial idea is that hot weather might rev up conflict.

Hemenway, who co-wrote a paper in Injury Epidemiology, used reports from the Chicago Tribune to get the number of shootings per day and then matched those against daily high temperature, humidity, wind speed, the difference in temperature from historical average, and precipitation type and amount.

According to this report that examined the city of Chicago between 2012 and 2016, a 10-degree Celsius higher temperature was significantly associated with 34 percent more shootings on weekdays, and 42 percent more shootings on weekends or holidays.&nbsp;

"In the winter, there were more shootings on those days which wouldn't have been hot in the summer but were warm for winter," Hemenway said.

According to Hemenway, "It's sort of a harm reduction. But even if this wasn't a gun problem, I suspect we would find the same thing if we had evidence about fights and assaults. What the guns do is make hostile interactions more deadly."

Leah Schinasi of Drexel University-led research on another paper that looked at violent crime in Philadelphia and was published in the Journal of Urban Health in 2017.

Schinasi told AFP, "I live in Philadelphia, and I remember biking home from work on a very hot day and observing how cranky everyone seemed. I was interested to see if this observation translated to higher rates of crime on hot days."

Violent crimes happened more often in the warmer months, May through September, according to Schinasi and the study's co-author Ghassan Hamra.

In comparison, daily rates of violent crime reduced substantially in the colder months, October through April.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit research group, over 18,000 people have died from gun violence in the United States in 2022, including homicide and suicide.

Large-capacity magazines are defined as those that hold more than 10 bullets. In 1994, Congress enacted a federal assault weapons ban, limiting these types of magazines, but it expired a decade later.

Today, nine states and the District of Columbia restrict possession of large-capacity magazines, but statutes vary in terms of maximum bullets allowed and applicable firearms.

Police officers who were on routine patrol nearby arrived on the scene in less than a minute and shot the attacker dead, likely preventing a much higher casualty toll, police and the city's mayor said.

"In less than one minute, Dayton first responders neutralized the shooter," Mayor Nan Whaley said at a news conference. "I'm just still completely amazed at the heroic nature of our police department."

Assistant Police Chief Matt Carper named the gunman as Connor Betts, a 24-year-old white male from Bellbrook, Ohio, and said his&nbsp;sister&nbsp;Megan Betts, 22, was among those killed.

Carper told reporters the shooting began at 1 a.m. local time in Dayton's Oregon District, a historic neighbourhood popular for its nightclubs, restaurants, art galleries and shops.

The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear, and investigators believe the individual had acted alone, Carper said.

The victims were four women and five men and ranged in age from 22 to 57, authorities said, adding that the youngest was the gunman's&nbsp;sister. Six of the nine people killed were African-American.

"There isn't much discrimination in the shooting," Carper told reporters. "It happened in a very short period of time."

Of the 27 people injured, four remained in serious condition and one person in critical, medical authorities said.

Whaley said the suspect wore body armour and fired a rifle with .223-caliber rounds from high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Had police officers not confronted the suspect as quickly as they did, "hundreds of people in the Oregon District could be dead today," the mayor said.

FBI agents were assisting in the investigation.

The shooting in Dayton, a riverfront city of about 140,000 people in southwestern Ohio, came just 13 hours after a mass shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, where 20 people were killed and 26 others wounded. The 21-year-old suspect in that shooting was arrested.

The Ohio shooting was the third major outbreak of US gun violence, coming seven days after a teenager killed three people with an assault rifle at a food festival in Northern California before taking his own life.

The latest shooting occurred outside a Dayton tavern called Ned Peppers Bar.

The Dayton Daily News cited a Facebook post from James Wilson, who said he was a customer sitting on a patio just outside the bar when the&nbsp;

"He (a gunman) tried to get into the bar but did not make it through the door," Wilson wrote. "Someone took the gun from him and he got shot and is dead."

One witness, Anthony Reynolds, said he heard gunfire that sounded like it was coming from a high-powered weapon.

"Just boom boom boom boom boom boom rapid," he said. "You could tell there's a big gun. You're not going to get those from no handgun. You're not."

Deb Decker, a spokeswoman for emergency services in Montgomery County, Ohio, told CNN the assailant had been making his way to Ned Peppers from another bar when someone grabbed the barrel of his rifle, and he drew a handgun, but was then shot as police arrived.
