Zuckerberg announced on Tuesday (Jan 7) that the company will be making some changes to its moderation policies and practices, citing its aim to embrace free speech.&nbsp;
The company will be altering the way posts, videos, and other content are moderated online. It will be getting rid of fact-checkers and will replace them with user-generated "community notes", which is similar to Elon Musk's X.&nbsp;

&ldquo;People that were doing some bad things weren&rsquo;t prosecuted, and people that didn&rsquo;t even walk into the building are in jail right now. So, we&rsquo;ll be looking at the whole thing. But I&rsquo;ll be making major pardons, yes," Trump further said.&nbsp;

World | Trending: Donald Trump further blamed Mexico for undocumented migration and threatened tariffs on both of America’s continental neighbours, Mexico and Canada.

US President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday (Jan 7) said that when he was in power there were no wars, stressing that "I'm going into a world that's burning." He slammed President Joe Biden's negotiating tactics with Ukraine for the situation. "Now I'm going into a world that's burning," Trump said while delivering his first remarks as certified election winner. He said this in reference to the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas wars. Trump said that Russia's war in Ukraine is “much more complicated” now and that it could escalate further. “That war could escalate to be much worse than it is right now,” he said. Also read: US Federal Judge temporarily blocks special counsel Jack Smith's report on Trump cases ‘Gulf of Mexico should be called Gulf of America’ Trump further said that the Gulf of Mexico should instead be called the “Gulf of America” as he continues his expansionist streak, saying that it is "appropriate". However, he did not mention how he would make the renaming happen. “We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate,” Trump said. He further blamed Mexico for undocumented migration and threatened tariffs on both of America’s continental neighbours. He further warned that the US is going to put "very serious tariffs on Mexico and Canada." "They can stop them. And we’re going to put very serious tariffs on Mexico and Canada, because Canada, they come through Canada too, and the drugs that are coming through are at record numbers, record numbers. So we’re going to make up for that by putting tariffs on Mexico and Canada, substantial tariffs," he said. 'All hell will break out' Trump warned that if hostages still being held in Gaza are not released by the time he is inaugurated on January 20, “all hell will break out in the Middle East.” He said that it would not be good for Hamas, stressing that there should have never been the October 7 attack. 'Looking at' possibility of pardoning Jan 6 rioters The president-elect said that he was "looking at" the possibility of pardoning January 6 rioters who are charged with violent offences. “Well, we’re looking at it, and we have other people in there,” Trump said when a reporter asked, "You said on your first day of office you were going to pardon January 6th defendants. Are you planning to pardon those who were charged with violent offences?” “People that were doing some bad things weren’t prosecuted, and people that didn’t even walk into the building are in jail right now. So, we’ll be looking at the whole thing. But I’ll be making major pardons, yes," Trump further said. Hamas official Osama Hamdan threatened US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, saying that he would be prosecuted for his role in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=gaza+war+" rel="dofollow">Gaza war</a>, calling him "a partner in the war of extermination".&nbsp;
Hamas politburo member Hamdan stressed that Blinken's partnership in the crimes will be pursued legally, The Times of Israel reported.&nbsp;
&ldquo;His statements are misleading and we do not trust them, and his partnership in the crimes against our people will be pursued legally,&rdquo; Hamdan threatened.&nbsp;

US top diplomat Blinken, in an interview with The New York Times, blamed Hamas for the failure to reach a hostage release agreement with Israel.&nbsp;
&ldquo;What we&rsquo;ve seen time and again is Hamas not concluding a deal that it should have concluded,&rdquo; Blinken said.
&ldquo;Why there hasn&rsquo;t been a unanimous chorus around the world for Hamas to put down its weapons, to give up the hostages, to surrender &mdash; I don&rsquo;t know what the answer is to that. Israel, on various occasions, has offered safe passage to Hamas&rsquo;s leadership and fighters out of Gaza. Where is the world? Where is the world saying, Yeah, do that! End this! Stop the suffering of people that you brought on!,&rdquo; he said.

Hamdan continued that negotiations with Israel have proven that the only way to achieve rights for the Palestinians is by force.&nbsp;
Moreover, Blinken said in the interview that the US does not believe that Israel is carrying out genocide in Gaza, although he says that there were times when Israel was not &ldquo;doing enough&rdquo; to allow in humanitarian assistance.
Hamdan further stressed that Hamas is determined to stop the aggression, adding that "for the enemy to withdraw from the Gaza Strip, and for relief and reconstruction to be without Israeli conditions."

&ldquo;We hope that this will be achieved as soon as possible," Hamdan added.&nbsp;
<h2>Call for national committee to manage Gaza</h2>
Hamdan called for a "national committee" to manage Gaza and "block the path of every corrupt argument that seeks to oppress our people."&nbsp;
Notably, Hamas and Israel have been negotiating on the potential deal in Qatar, however, the progress has been slow.&nbsp;
Hamdan said Hamas hopes that Syria &ldquo;will remain in the position of resistance&rdquo; due to Israel&rsquo;s control of the Golan Heights and beyond. &ldquo;One of the most important values launched by Al-Aqsa Flood [the Hamas name for the October 7, 2023, terror onslaught] is that peoples will not be liberated except through resistance.&rdquo;

Hamas official Osama Hamdan threatened US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, saying that he would be prosecuted for his role in the Gaza war, calling him "a partner in the war of extermination". Hamas politburo member Hamdan stressed that Blinken's partnership in the crimes will be pursued legally, The Times of Israel reported. “His statements are misleading and we do not trust them, and his partnership in the crimes against our people will be pursued legally,” Hamdan threatened. Also read: US top diplomat Blinken warned Netanyahu, Biden would not visit Israel if he won't allow aid into Gaza US top diplomat Blinken, in an interview with The New York Times, blamed Hamas for the failure to reach a hostage release agreement with Israel. “What we’ve seen time and again is Hamas not concluding a deal that it should have concluded,” Blinken said. “Why there hasn’t been a unanimous chorus around the world for Hamas to put down its weapons, to give up the hostages, to surrender — I don’t know what the answer is to that. Israel, on various occasions, has offered safe passage to Hamas’s leadership and fighters out of Gaza. Where is the world? Where is the world saying, Yeah, do that! End this! Stop the suffering of people that you brought on!,” he said. Also read: West Asia crisis: Antony Blinken warns against triggering further conflicts in Syria Hamdan continued that negotiations with Israel have proven that the only way to achieve rights for the Palestinians is by force. Moreover, Blinken said in the interview that the US does not believe that Israel is carrying out genocide in Gaza, although he says that there were times when Israel was not “doing enough” to allow in humanitarian assistance. Hamdan further stressed that Hamas is determined to stop the aggression, adding that "for the enemy to withdraw from the Gaza Strip, and for relief and reconstruction to be without Israeli conditions." Also read: US Secretary of State Blinken meets with Lebanon’s PM amid rising Israel-Hezbollah tensions “We hope that this will be achieved as soon as possible," Hamdan added. Call for national committee to manage Gaza Hamdan called for a "national committee" to manage Gaza and "block the path of every corrupt argument that seeks to oppress our people." Notably, Hamas and Israel have been negotiating on the potential deal in Qatar, however, the progress has been slow. Hamdan said Hamas hopes that Syria “will remain in the position of resistance” due to Israel’s control of the Golan Heights and beyond. “One of the most important values launched by Al-Aqsa Flood [the Hamas name for the October 7, 2023, terror onslaught] is that peoples will not be liberated except through resistance.” Disclaimer: WION takes the utmost care to accurately and responsibly report conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, Syria, Iraq, and non-state actors like the Islamic State, among others. As US President Joe Biden announced the ban on new offshore oil and gas development along most US coastlines in the closing weeks of his term in office, a US-based energy research firm said that President-elect Donald Trump would not be able to reverse Biden's action.&nbsp;
ClearView Energy Partners Director of Research Kevin Book told Newsweek, "Our perception is that it can't be reversed by executive action", adding that this is not the same thing as saying that it cannot be reversed, however.&nbsp;
Biden's order comes amid Trump's pledge to "drill, baby, drill" campaign slogan. His slogan has become synonymous with his plan to boost fossil fuel production in the US and reverse climate policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

Biden used the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, a law that permits presidents to limit future drilling in federal waters.&nbsp;

Earlier, Barack Obama also withdrew large stretches of waters from drilling. But, in 2017, Trump issued an executive order to reverse Obama's action and restore future drilling permits.&nbsp;
However, later, the US District Court for Alaska found that Trump did not have the authority to reverse Obama's action. But, before an appeals court heard the case, Biden took over the administration and reversed Trump's policy.&nbsp;

As people have begun freaking out about the potential outbreak of the respiratory infection Human Metapneumovirus (<a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=HMPV" rel="dofollow">HMPV</a>), the top UK virus experts have called on Chinese authorities to disclose vital information on the infection, Daily Mail reported.&nbsp;
Virus expert Dr Andrew Catchpole said the UK authorities "need more information on the specific strain circulating" in order to accurately assess the threat to the people living in Britain.&nbsp;
This comes as infection cases have surged across the UK, with cold-like symptoms. According to the graphs, the numbers have doubled over the last month.&nbsp;

According to the latest UK surveillance data, as many as one in 20 cases of respiratory infections could be due to the HMPV infection.&nbsp;
"HMPV is usually detected in the winter periods but it does seem that the rates of serious infection may be higher in China than what we would expect in a normal year," said Dr Catchpole, the Chief Scientific Officer at infectious disease testing firm hVIVO.
"We need more information on the specific strain that is circulating to start to understand if this is the usual circulating strain or if the virus causing high infection rates in China has some differences," he added.&nbsp;

Catchpole further said that it is unclear just how high the numbers are or if issues are coming up purely due to coinciding with high flu and Covid levels.&nbsp;
He further noted that while HMPV "does mutate and change over time with new strains emerging', it is 'not a virus considered to have pandemic potential".&nbsp;
Meanwhile, multiple experts urged people not to panic as the majority of infections cause "mild, cold-like symptoms".&nbsp;
However, Jaya Dantas, a professor of international health at Curtin University in Australia warned, "In young children, the elderly, and those who are immune compromised, hMPV can lead to severe cases and can move to the lower respiratory tract and may lead to pneumonia."

"We need to use a cautious and measured approach, as we know so much more since the Covid pandemic," Jaya added.
<h2>Cases surge in US</h2>
According to new data, the HMPV virus is also widely spreading in the US. Following this, Western specialists have urged China to be more open about an outbreak of influenza.&nbsp;
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that less than 300 positive test results were recorded in the last week of December.
It said that the CDC is "monitoring" the instances in China, adding that the current cases are "not currently a cause for concern in the US.&rdquo;
China has said that respiratory ailments are "less severe" and "smaller in size" than they were in 2024.&nbsp;

The suspects in the two deadly New Year's Day attacks have both had a history of serving in the US military, which further underscores the continuous fear of extremism within the US armed services.&nbsp;
In the New Orleans attack, the driver, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, rammed the truck into a crowd during the New Year's celebrations, killing 14 people.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Matthew Livelsberger was the man suspected behind the Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the International Trump Hotel in Las Vegas.&nbsp;

The two attacks raise the question about the extent of radical and unstable veteran and active-duty troops and whether the Pentagon's efforts to identify and root out extremist beliefs are working.&nbsp;

Fears of extremism in military as US reels under New Year's attacks

Alcoholic drinks should carry a label warning consumers about their cancer risks, the US Surgeon General said in an advisory on Friday, noting that their consumption increases the risk of developing breast, colon, liver and other cancers.
US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy also called for the guidelines on alcohol consumption limits to be reassessed so that people can weigh the cancer risk when deciding whether or how much to drink, alongside current warnings on birth defects and impairments when operating machinery.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/four-including-australian-american-tourists-killed-in-alcohol-poisoning-incident-in-laos-777895" rel="dofollow">Also read: Laos alcohol poisoning incident: Death toll climbs to five</a>
Shares of US-listed alcoholic beverage makers fell between 1 per cent and 2 per cent in premarket trading, with Brown-Forman Corp leading the declines.
"Alcohol consumption is the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the United States, after tobacco and obesity, increasing risk for at least seven types of cancer," Murthy&rsquo;s office said in a statement accompanying the new report.
It is responsible for 100,000 US cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths each year, more than the 13,500 alcohol-associated traffic crash deaths, it added.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-liam-payne-death-toxicology-report-reveals-he-had-cocaine-alcohol--antidepressants-in-his-system-774589" rel="dofollow">Also read: Liam Payne death: Toxicology report reveals he had cocaine, alcohol &amp; antidepressants in his system</a>
In the US, there are about 20,000 alcohol-related cancer deaths annually, according to the report.
Alcoholic beverages in the United States currently carry a health warning label that advises pregnant women to not drink them and that their consumption impairs a person&rsquo;s ability to drive a car or operate machinery.
This label has not changed since its inception in 1988.
"The direct link between alcohol consumption and cancer risk is well-established for at least seven types of cancer &hellip; regardless of the type of alcohol (e.g., beer, wine, and spirits) that is consumed," the statement said, including cancers of the esophagus, mouth, throat and voice box.

The new report recommends health care providers should encourage alcohol screening and treatment referrals as needed, and efforts to increase general awareness should be expanded.

'Win for Mike, will be big win for party,' Trump endorses Johnson for Speaker as he faces crucial vote

US President Joe Biden is poised to officially block Nippon Steel's proposed USD 14.9-billion purchase of US Steel, a person familiar with the matter said on Friday, dealing a probably fatal blow to the contentious merger plan.
The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) spent months reviewing the deal for national security risks but referred the decision to Biden in December, after failing to reach consensus.
His decision could come as soon as Friday, despite the concerns of some of his senior advisers that it could hurt ties with key Asian ally Tokyo, according to the Washington Post, which first reported the news.
The newspaper cited two administration officials who were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.
Shares of US Steel were down 7.8 per cent in pre-market trade following the reports. Japan's stock market was closed on Friday for a public holiday.
Spokespersons for the White House and Nippon Steel declined to comment.

US Steel directed Reuters to its Thursday statement that it hoped "Biden will do the right thing and adhere to the law by approving a transaction that so clearly enhances US national and economic security."
Nippon paid a hefty premium to clinch the purchase of the No.2 US steel producer in a December 2023 auction, but the deal faced opposition from the powerful United Steelworkers union (USW), as well as politicians.
Biden has previously said he wants US Steel to stay domestically owned and run, while President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to block a foreign takeover of the storied American firm after he takes office on January 20.
<h2>Risky business</h2>
In a November letter, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba urged Biden to approve the merger so as to avoid marring recent efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries, Reuters has exclusively reported.
A spokesperson for Ishiba could not be reached for comment on Friday and Japan's trade ministry declined to comment, saying there had been no formal announcement of a decision.
Japan is a key US ally in the Indo-Pacific, where China's economic and military rise has raised concerns in Washington, along with threats from North Korea.

It is also the top investor in the United States and Keidanren, its biggest business lobby, has previously aired concerns that the review was facing political pressure.
Blocking the deal may dissuade international investors from bidding for politically sensitive US companies with a unionized workforce in the short term, said Alistair Ramsey, vice president of steel research at consultancy Rystad Energy.
"Big bids are a risky idea less than 12 months from a presidential election, but big steel producers with traditional operating furnaces, such as Nippon Steel, see the U.S. as an excellent place to produce steel in the long term, despite the market depression there," he added.
Nippon has vowed to fight in the courts any decision to halt the deal, but lawyers including Nick Wall, M&amp;A partner at Allen &amp; Overy, have said mounting any such legal challenge against the US government would be tough.
The two companies had sought to assuage concerns over the merger. Nippon offered to move its US headquarters to Pittsburgh, where the US steelmaker is based and promised to honor all agreements in place between US Steel and USW.
This week, a source familiar with the matter said Nippon Steel had also proposed giving the US government veto power over any potential cuts to US Steel's production capacity, as part of its efforts to secure Biden's approval.
"It is difficult to fully understand the risks involved in Nippon Steel's potential acquisition of US Steel," said a Japanese government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, as did the other sources.
"Nippon Steel has done everything to eliminate risks related to economic securities, including committing not to reduce production."
Nippon Steel faces a USD 565-million penalty payment to U.S. Steel following the deal's collapse, set to prompt a major rethink of its overseas-focused growth strategy.
With the acquisition of US Steel, Nippon Steel aimed to raise its global output capacity to 85 million metric tons a year from 65 million now, nearing its long-term goal of taking capacity to 100 million tons.
US Steel has previously said the deal's failure would put at risk thousands of jobs and it might be forced to close some steel mills, an assertion the USW union called baseless threats and intimidation.
But Atilla Widnell, managing director at Singapore-based trade consultancy Navigate Commodities, said any decision to block the deal was "misguided".
"Nippon Steel is a bona fide operator of overseas assets with a strong and successful track record," said Widnell.
"Even more so, US Steel has acknowledged its assets are in dire need of new large-scale investment and it will not be able to sustain its operational capacity and production in its current state."
