According to a report, General Electric Co is laying off workers at the onshore wind unit, after informing employees in North America, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, on Wednesday about the cuts. Reuters cited four sources familiar with the move to say that these layoffs are partly due to the company’s plans to “restructure and resize the business”.&nbsp;

Furthermore, they might also downsize their workforce in the upcoming days in Europe and the Asia Pacific. This comes as the industry is facing low demand, high costs and supply chain delays, said the report. The company has also confirmed that they are “streamlining” its onshore wind business citing market realities but refrained from commenting directly on the aforementioned layoffs.&nbsp;

According to sources, the cuts will affect at least 20% of the US onshore wind unit's workforce, which is hundreds of employees at the company. The GE Renewables spokesperson also emailed the following statement to Reuters, “These are difficult decisions, which do not reflect on our employees' dedication and hard work but are needed to ensure the business can compete and improve profitability over time.”

The report indicates that among GE’s renewable businesses onshore wind is the largest, as of the end of 2021, it employed 38,000 people worldwide. However, the onshore wind unit has reportedly been suffering due to inflation and higher costs of raw materials, as well as supply chain pressures.&nbsp;

The report has also attributed this to increased competition, supply chain disruptions due to the Covid-19 pandemic and soaring metal prices worsened by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These aspects have made it difficult for companies like GE to make a profit despite more companies and the government pushing for renewable energy as a way to tackle climate change, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

This has reportedly pushed GE to prioritise its onshore business as it plans to turn its energy businesses, including renewables, into a separate company by the year 2024. The company sources also told the media that the onshore business is working on reducing fixed costs which they estimate could save at least some hundred million dollars in 2023.&nbsp;

His 51-year-old son was also convicted in 2016 on the same charges and was released from Tehran's Evin prison on Saturday on a one-week renewable furlough but he was barred from leaving the country.&nbsp;

In a statement released by the Namazi family’s lawyer, Babak Namazi, Baquer Namazi's son, expressed gratitude for his father's release from Iran but also sorrow that his brother could not leave the country.&nbsp;

“While getting my father out of Iran is incredibly important, today is also bittersweet. My brother Siamak, as well as Americans Emad (Shargi) and Morad Tahbaz, remain detained in Iran and our nightmare will not be over until our entire family (and) the other Americans are reunited with their families,” the statement read. Meanwhile, Genser added that while today is a good day for the Namazi family, the work is far from over and said that they need Iran and America to reach an agreement which would bring all American hostages, held in Tehran, home.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, Solomon Islands foreign minister Jeremiah Manele revealed that the country had initially refused to sign the United States government’s much-touted Pacific partnership deal until “indirect” references to China were removed from the agreement. The deal was meant strengthen Washington’s ties with at least 14 Pacific nations and included provisions for increased cooperation on maritime security, climate change and economic development.

However, when the foreign minister was asked during the press conference if the text was referring to Beijing, he responded by saying “indirectly.”

According to reports, the image was taken two days after the asteroid had been crashed into by the probe and was captured by a telescope in Chile.&nbsp;

On September 27, NASA indicated that they had successfully crashed the DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) spacecraft into an asteroid at the speed of 22,500 kph. This was an attempt by scientists to examine the possibility of nudging any asteroids that threaten Earth in the future. They are still working to establish if they have succeeded in their endeavour and if the asteroid’s trajectory has been altered due to the crash.&nbsp;

The image was taken two days after the collision, by astronomers in Chile using the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR). Reportedly, the comet-like trail goes on for more than 10,000 km and it is expected to get longer before it disperses completely.&nbsp;

“It is amazing how clearly we were able to capture the structure and extent of the aftermath in the days following the impact,” said astronomer Teddy Kareta, one of many involved in the observation from the Lowell Observatory.

According to Michael Knight, from the US Naval Research Laboratory, the trail of debris would be monitored in the upcoming weeks and months. He added, "Now begins the next phase of work for the DART team as they analyse their data and observations by our team and other observers around the world who shared in studying this exciting event."&nbsp;

The scientists will determine whether the mission was successful by observing the changes to the orbit of the 160-metre asteroid that was crashed by the DART probe and was named, Dimorphos, around another asteroid Didymos. The telescopes on Earth will keep an exact measure of the two-rock or binary system.&nbsp;

As per the report, a startup named Pengxinwei IC Manufacturing Co (PXW) has placed orders for such components. The startup is based in Huawei's hometown of Shenzhen. Huawei is reportedly providing support to PXW to set up a semiconductor manufacturing unit. What's more, a former Huawei executive is running the startup.

USA blacklisted Huawei in 2019 and even pressed allies like UK and Japan to take steps to eliminate Huawei's presence from their tech sphere. Because of this, there are obstacles for Huawei to import components from these countries.&nbsp;

PXW however, may not face such hurdles. Bloomberg said that the company may be able to acquire components from Japan with lesser hassles that what Huawei would have to go through. In a statement mentioned in the report, PXW said that it had inked deals with suppliers and intends to start production in 2025. It did not mention who would be its clients but it is being expected that Huawei will buy most of the output.&nbsp;

Huawei may be evading US sanctions through a small start-up: Report

The Colorado baker who won a partial Supreme Court victory after refusing to make a gay couple's wedding cake on religious grounds ten years ago is contesting a second judgment that his refusal to make a cake commemorating a gender transition violated the state's anti-discrimination legislation.

On Wednesday, a lawyer representing Jack Phillips urged Colorado's appeals court to reject last year's decision in a lawsuit brought by a transgender woman, primarily on procedural grounds.

In order to commemorate her gender transition, the woman, Autumn Scardina, called Phillips' suburban Denver cake store in 2017 and asked for a birthday cake with blue icing on the outside and pink frosting inside. Christian witness Phillips said during his testimony at the trial last year that he did not believe that one could alter their gender.

The verdict was incorrect, according to Jake Warner, a lawyer for Phillips from the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian legal advocacy group. According to him, forcing Phillips to make a cake with a message that conflicts with his religious convictions would violate his right to free speech since it would require him to say something he does not believe.

Judge Timothy Schutz noted Phillips’ wife initially told Scardina the bakery could make the cake before Scardina volunteered that the design was meant to celebrate her gender transition.

While Duda claims he talked to Washington, the White House officials, per the Bloomberg report were unaware of such an issue being raised.&nbsp;

Both US and NATO continue to maintain that they will not deploy nuclear weapons in countries that have joined the powerful security alliance after the fall of communism.&nbsp;

Poland is a full member of NATO since 1999. The security alliance has a concept called 'Nuclear Sharing Arrangement'&nbsp;which acts as a deterrent for enemy states. Under the policy,&nbsp;countries that do not have their own nuclear weapons host those from others that do.

Currently, US, France and the UK are the three countries within NATO that have nuclear weapons in their arsenal. Out of the three, only US takes part in the nuclear weapons sharing programme.&nbsp;

Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey are the only NATO allies that host the US nuclear weapons on their territories.&nbsp;

However, a South Korean short-range Hyumoo-2 ballistic missile crashed to the ground inside the air base in the country’s coastal city of Gangneung and although the missile did not explode it caused quite a scare among the nearby residents who reportedly thought North Korea had launched an attack.&nbsp;

South Korea’s military acknowledged the attack hours later as social media users posted videos of orange flames emerging from a nearby area they described as the Gangneung air force base. “Many frantic residents called the city hall,” an official at the Gangneung City Hall told AFP.&nbsp;
