The top US official claimed that the current situation has also aided Taiwan's development, which has made it the leading worldwide producer of innovative semiconductors used in consumer electronics, appliances, and automobiles.

The workers at Amazon, the world’s largest retailer, have been pushing back with sporadic protests and strikes across the United States in order to improve working conditions and wages. This also comes amid allegations that the retail giant is conducting harsh crackdowns on unionisation efforts by employees, said a report by the Guardian.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, an Amazon employee Matt Litrell was distributing union fliers outside a warehouse in Campbellsville when the local police were allegedly called by one of the managers for accusing him of trespassing on company property.&nbsp;

However, the officers eventually left him as he was not on Amazon’s property. Litrell claims the incident amounted to an illegal-intimidation charge which he later filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), said a media report.&nbsp;

Brandon Calloway and his co-worker were terminated two days later and they have since filed a complaint for unfair labour practice with the NLRB over the firings.&nbsp;

This comes as workers have alleged that the company is conducting crackdowns on unionisation efforts while they have retaliated with protests and strikes. The conditions of Amazon workers and their unionisation movement have garnered attention worldwide however the movement has suffered quite a few setbacks including a recently lost vote at a warehouse outside New York.&nbsp;

Citing similar incidents across the US, the report by Guardian says that many employees have walked off, held strikes and filed several lawsuits against the retail giant demanding higher wages and improved working conditions.&nbsp;

“I watched them change some processes that made things harder for us, but it made things faster for them, and I watched more and more of my co-workers getting injured,” said an Amazon employee, Sara Fee. This is what inspired her to demand improvements, said Fee, adding that every person working at the company is easily replaced when they are seen as a liability.&nbsp;

Amazon has denied the recent allegations and in a statement to the Guardian said, “We don’t believe there is any merit to these claims filed with the NLRB, and look forward to presenting the facts as that process moves forward.”&nbsp;

They added that they value employee feedback and are investing “$1 billion&nbsp;over the next year to permanently raise hourly pay for frontline employees and we’ll continue looking for ways to improve their experience.”

The US-based aerospace giant said that its losses deepened in the third quarter due to these difficulties and at least $2.8 billion worth of charges related to defence programmes, including its military refuelling tanker and Air Force One replacement jets.

While the company was making some improvements, it continued to face challenges with a series of engineering, manufacturing and regulatory problems it encountered since the crashes of two Boeing 737 Max jets which collectively claimed the lives of over 300 people, said a report by the Wall Street Journal.

“Nearly every industry is navigating a broad supply chain, inflation, labour and macro-economic challenges – and we’re certainly no different. We’re realistic about the environment we face and are taking comprehensive action,” said Chief Executive Dave Calhoun in a letter to his employees. He added, “turnarounds take time,” and said, “we have more work to do” and went on to reiterate his confidence in the team.&nbsp;

This loss has also been attributed to supply chain disruptions and its effect on the company’s commercial jet business which is facing delays in the delivery of 737 jets. Additionally, Boeing is also facing regulatory hurdles with its latest 737, MAX 7 and MAX 10 models which are yet to receive certification from the US regulatory bodies by the end of the year.&nbsp;

A former U.S. military pilot and flight instructor who worked in China was arrested in Australia and faces extradition to the United States, Australian court documents and company records show.

Australian Federal Police arrested Daniel Edmund Duggan, 54, on Friday in the rural town of Orange in New South Wales, and he appeared in court there on the same day, court records show and two police sources and his lawyer confirmed.

His lawyer appeared by videoconference, and Duggan was denied bail and taken to the nearby Bathurst jail, two of the sources said.

Duggan is a former U.S. citizen and the federal police were acting on a U.S. request for his arrest ahead of likely formal extradition proceedings, said one of the police sources, who was not authorised to speak publicly.

Duggan's next court appearance will be in Sydney in November to consider any bail application. Details of the U.S. arrest warrant and the charges he faces are sealed.

"An individual was arrested on 21 October 2022 pursuant to a request from the United States of America for their provisional arrest," a spokesman for the federal Attorney-General's Department said in a written statement to Reuters. "As the matter is before the courts, it would not be appropriate to comment further."

The arrest came the same week Britain warned dozens of former military pilots to stop working in China or face prosecution on national security grounds under new laws. Australia is also investigating reports some of its former fighter pilots have been approached to work in China.

An aviation source told Reuters that the FBI sought Duggan because of his work in China. His lawyer, Dennis Miralis of Nyman, Gibson and Miralis, said he could not comment.

Duggan moved to Australia after a decade in the U.S. military and started a business called Top Gun Tasmania, hiring former U.S. and British military pilots to offer tourists joyrides in fighter jets, company records show and aviation sources confirmed.

Duggan also flew ex-military aircraft in Australian air shows, three pilots told Reuters.

Top Gun Tasmania's website says Duggan flew Harrier jump jets in the U.S. Marines and was an air combat instructor.

He moved to Beijing in 2014 and soon after sold Top Gun Tasmania, filings in Australia for the company show.

Duggan's LinkedIn profile said he has been working in Qingdao, China, since 2017 as the managing director of AVIBIZ Limited, described as "a comprehensive aviation consultancy company with a focus on the fast growing and dynamic Chinese Aviation Industry".

Hong Kong company records show AVIBIZ Limited was registered there by Australian passport holder Daniel Edmund Duggan in 2017 and dissolved in 2020.

Duggan could not be immediately reached for comment.

Under Australia's extradition treaty with the United States, the U.S. government will have 60 days to make an extradition request. The treaty allows Australian citizens to be extradited.
