An announcement about the same is expected sometime this week, said the media reports. &nbsp;

According to The Age newspaper, based in the city of Melbourne, Victoria state will also ban TikTok from government phones, citing a state government official as saying Victoria would follow the federal government’s guidance on the matter. Meanwhile, Tiktok Australia general manager Lee Hunter in a statement said that the company is “extremely disappointed” by the decision if confirmed.&nbsp;

He added that they were also disappointed to learn about the possible decision from the media “despite our repeated offers to engage with government constructively about this policy.”&nbsp;

“We stress that there is no evidence to suggest that TikTok is in any way a security risk to Australians and should not be treated differently to other social media platforms,” said Hunter, as per media reports.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, reports also suggest that TikTok is considering separation from parent company ByteDance as it is under scrutiny in the US over the app and the alleged national security risks it poses, said a report last month.&nbsp;

The United States has diplomatic relations with Vanuatu, which has a population of 319,000 spread across 80 islands, but is currently represented by diplomats based in New Guinea.

The United States States reopened its embassy in the Solomon Islands this year after a 30-year absence and the latest State Department announcement follows a visit this month to the region, including Vanuatu, by U.S. Indo-Pacific coordinator Kurt Campbell.

Other U.S. embassies are planned in the Pacific island nations of Kiribati and Tonga.

Despite the diplomatic push, the Solomon Islands announced this month it had awarded a multi-million-dollar contract to a Chinese state company to upgrade an international port in Honiara.

The United States and its regional allies have held concerns that China has ambitions to build a naval base in the region since the Solomon Islands struck a security pact with Beijing last year.

Washington has also been working to renew agreements with the Marshall Islands, Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) under which it retains responsibility for the islands' defense and gains exclusive access to huge swaths of the Pacific.

The Biden administration is seeking more than $7 billion over the next two decades for economic assistance to the three countries, the State Department said last week, funds seen as key to insulating them from growing Chinese influence.

The G7 countries are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States along with the European Union.

The report also said that the US government and Congress have disclosed retaliatory measures against Beijing in advance which include raising tariffs. This move is seen as Washington’s bid to discourage Beijing from economically bullying other countries. According to the report, the US has already called for action in working-level talks with G7 nations and asked for it to be on the agenda for this year’s G7 meetings.&nbsp;

The details of what these actions would entail will be discussed with Japan which is also the G7 chair this year ahead of the group’s leaders’ summit scheduled for May. The US has also sought the support of Japan and European partners on the matter, said the report.&nbsp;

This also comes after Congress, in February, also reportedly introduced a bipartisan bill which would grant the president the power to take multiple countermeasures against Chinese economic coercion. In line with this, along with tariffs on Beijing, Washington would also offer support to the countries affected, as per the Japan-based media outlet.&nbsp;

As part of a vast storm system that also brought wildfires to the southern Plains and blizzard conditions to the Upper Midwest, perhaps dozens of tornadoes touched down in the early morning hours in at least seven states, wrecking houses and uprooting trees.&nbsp;

As the storms engulfed a region of the country where 85 million people live, many lost electricity. Four people died in Wynne, Arkansas, a small town, while three people died in Sullivan, Indiana.

Other fatalities were reported in Alabama, Illinois, Mississippi, and the area of Little Rock.

One person was killed and 28 people were injured, five of them seriously, when a tornado in Belvidere, Illinois, destroyed the Apollo Theatre's roof as 260 people were watching a heavy metal concert indoors.&nbsp;

Gabrielle Lewellyn, who had just entered the theatre, told WTVO-TV that others hurried to lift the part of the ceiling that had collapsed and drag people out from under&nbsp;the debris.

“They dragged someone out from the rubble, and I sat with him and I held his hand and I was (telling him) ‘It’s going to be OK.’ I didn’t really know much else what to do,” Lewellyn told AP.&nbsp;

In a statement, the Hong Kong government, on Saturday (April 1) said that it “strongly disapproved” and “firmly rejected” the recent findings in a new United States government report. The report finds that Washington’s interests had been threatened and that Beijing continues to “undermine the rule of law” and freedoms on the island under its national security lockdown. This comes after China imposed its National Security Law in Hong Kong, in 2020 outlawing crimes such as subversion with possible life imprisonment.

What did the US report say?

The US report called the 2023 Hong Kong Policy Act Report, published on Friday, said, “PRC (People’s Republic of China) and Hong Kong authorities continued to use ‘national security’ as a broad and vague basis to undermine the rule of law and protected rights and freedoms.”&nbsp;

In reference to Beijing imposing the National Security Law in Hong Kong in 2020 without any local legislative or consultative process, it said the law in question banned secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces in Hong Kong. The laws are quite similar to mainland China where President Xi Jinping has implemented a fierce crackdown on dissent for years.&nbsp;

“Hong Kong authorities continued to arrest and prosecute people for peaceful political expression critical of the local and central governments, including for posting and forwarding social media posts,” said the US report. Notably, more than 230 people have been arrested in Hong Kong under the national security law.&nbsp;

Last week, dozens of protesters participated in a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/dozens-of-protesters-take-to-streets-in-hong-kong-after-two-years-under-strict-restrictions-575887">small rally</a> after permission from the Hong Kong police, one of the first ones since the enactment of sweeping laws. Several images of the protest show people wearing numbered badges around their necks and were also reportedly barred from face masks.&nbsp;

China’s response to the report&nbsp;

The next day, the government in Hong Kong released a statement, saying that it “strongly disapproved” and “firmly rejected” what it referred to as US’ “unfounded and fact-twisting remarks”. A spokesperson for the government said that it “strongly disapproves of and firmly rejects the slandering remarks and ill-intentioned attacks in the US’ so-called 2023 Hong Kong Policy Act Report".&nbsp;

The city is an “inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China (and) is a local administrative region that enjoys a high degree of autonomy under ‘one country, two systems,’” added the spokesperson. The “one country, two systems” is the Chinese government principle that refers to the autonomous status afforded to the regions of Hong Kong and Macau.
