He served as an adviser to Zambia's first president, Kenneth Kaunda. And he was an expert on refugee resettlement," she said.</p>

<p>"I remember my time here fondly. I was a child, so it is the memory of a child. But I remember being here and just how it felt, and the warmth and the excitement that was present. And, in fact, I was talking with my aunt recently, and she was reminding me of the relationships that she made when she was working at -- then it was called Lusaka Central Hospital -- when she was working there with the physicians there," Vice President Harris added.</p>

<p>The model involves artificial intelligence (AI) to examine data from spacecraft observations of the solar wind, or the continuous stream of material from the Sun, and forecast the location of an impending solar storm anywhere on Earth with a 30 minute lead time. This might give people just enough time to prep for major solar storms and avoid serious damage to power systems and other critical infrastructure.</p>

<p>The Sun continuously releases solar material into space, both in the form of smaller, more intense bursts from solar eruptions and in a constant flow known as the "solar wind."</p>

<p>It sometimes produces so-called geomagnetic storms when this solar material interacts with Earth's magnetic environment (also known as its "magnetosphere"). These magnetic storms can have mild to severe effects, but because technology is used increasingly in our everyday lives, their effects are becoming more disruptive.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The DAGGER model</strong></h2>

<p>As we approach the next "solar maximum," a peak in the Sun's 11-year activity cycle, which is predicted to occur somewhere in 2025, the probability of geomagnetic storms and their disastrous impacts on our society is rising.</p>

<p>Scientists used this information to create the DAGGER computer model, also known as Deep Learning Geomagnetic Perturbation, which can forecast geomagnetic disturbances 30 minutes in advance, globally.</p>

<p>“With this AI, it is now possible to make rapid and accurate global predictions and inform decisions in the event of a solar storm, thereby minimizing – or even preventing – devastation to modern society,” said Vishal Upendran of the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics in India, who is the lead author of a paper about the DAGGER model&nbsp;<a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2022SW003045">published</a>&nbsp;in the journal Space Weather.</p>

<p>Two geomagnetic storms that occurred in August 2011 and March 2015 were used by the DAGGER team to evaluate the model's potential. In each case, DAGGER was able to quickly and accurately forecast the storm's global implications.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With models like DAGGER, it's possible that solar storm sirens will one day sound an alarm at power plants and satellite control centres all over the world, just like tornado sirens do in towns and cities across America.</p>

<p>The United States has imposed a series of export controls on chipmaking technology to China for fear it could be used to produce chips for applications such as artificial intelligence which could be used by China's military, and blacklisted a number of China's largest chip firms, including Micron rival Yangtze Memory Technologies Co Ltd.</p>

<p>Micron is one of the world's largest memory chip makers. Reuters said that Micron did not immediately respond to a comment.</p>

<p>"Punitive actions against Micron could suggest a broader shift in Chinese policy with other U.S. vendors with large Chinese exposure now potentially at risk of similar actions," Wedbush Securities analyst Matthew Bryson said.</p>

<p>On Friday, Japan announced it would align its technology trade controls with a U.S. push to curb China's ability to make advanced chips. The Netherlands, which makes advanced lithography equipment critical for the manufacture of advanced chips, made a similar announcement earlier this month.</p>

<p>On 3 February, 38 cars of Norfold cargo train including 11 carrying hazardous materials derailed and resulted in the release of over 1 million gallons of hazardous materials in the environment, as per Ohio's Attorney General Dave Yost.</p>

<p>EPA Administrator Michael Regan said “no community should have to go through what East Palestine residents have faced.”</p>

<p>Earlier this month, Ohio had also sued Norfolk Southern. Yost in Mid-March alleged&nbsp;that Norfolk Southern breached&nbsp;several local, state, and federal laws&nbsp;as well as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of Ohio (CERCLA).</p>

<p>“This derailment was entirely avoidable,” Yost had told earlier this month. “I’m concerned that Norfolk Southern may be putting profits for their own company above the health and safety of the cities and communities they operate in.”</p>

<p>Fortunately, no deaths or injuries were reported in the trail derailment incident. However, some of East Palestine's 4,700 residents have complained of rashes and respiratory problems since the incident. Some even worry about long-term health implications.</p>

<p>While railroad workers burnt off a dangerous chemical from five tanker cars of the cargo train, thousands of people of eastern Ohio were under evacuation orders.</p>
