<p>The company says it has spent more than $1.5 billion on data security efforts under the name "Project Texas" which currently has nearly 1,500 full-time employees and is contracted with Oracle Corp to store TikTok’s U.S. user data.</p>

<p>Rather than appease lawmakers' concerns, Chew's appearance before Congress on Thursday "actually increased the likelihood that Congress will take some action," Representative Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, the Republican chairman of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, told ABC News on Sunday.</p>

US: Lawmakers to press on with legislation to deal with TikTok issue

<p>Republican governor of the US state of Idaho, Brad Little, signed a number of bills this week, among them being firing squad executions and one preventing transgender students from using public school bathrooms that do not correspond to their gender at birth.</p>

<p>Little signed House Bill 186, which permits firing squad to carry out executions in Idaho in the event state is unable to get lethal injections by pharmaceutical companies. Many US states have had trouble finding the chemicals needed for lethal injection, which has forced them to halt executions.</p>

<p>Capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, is the practice of executing inmates who have been convicted of certain crimes. The method of execution varies by country and jurisdiction. They commonly includes lethal injection, electrocution, gas chamber, hanging, or firing squad.</p>

<p>Many US States have long relied on medicines like potassium chloride, pancuronium bromide, and sodium thiopental that have been criticised for their potential to inflict agonising pain. This comes as many pharmaceutical companies have banned lethal injections. It has raised fears of alternative execution methods in the United States.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The families of the victims deserve justice for their loved ones and the death penalty is a way to bring them peace,” Little said in a transmittal letter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Once taken effect, Idaho will become the fifth US state carrying out executions by firing squad. The other four states, according to the Death Penalty Information Center, are Utah, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and South Carolina.</p>

While a Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper said that one person had died in Silver City, reported ABC news.&nbsp;</p>

The storm has left a trail of damage for more than 100 miles (160 km), damaging buildings and knocking out power while the severe weather also produced hail the size of golf balls, as per media reports. U.S. President Joe Biden approved declaration of emergency for Mississippi on Sunday after the powerful storm tore across the state, killing at least 25 people there and one in Alabama, reported Reuters. A White House Statement said, Biden ordered federal aid to supplement state, tribal and local recovery efforts in the affected areas and funding will be available to affected people in the counties of Carroll, Humphreys, Monroe, and Sharkey. The country’s National Weather Service confirmed a tornado caused damage about 60 miles (96 km) northeast of Jackson, Mississippi. While in the rural towns of Silver City and Rolling Fork, the tornado continued to move at the speed of 70 mph (113 kph) toward Alabama’s Winona and Amory, reported the Associated Press. Confirming the death toll, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said that search and rescue teams are in full swing. "We know that many more are injured. Search and rescue teams are still active. The loss will be felt in these towns forever," he wrote on Twitter. Coroner Angelia Easton told ABC News that at least 13 people had been killed in Mississippi’s Sharkey County which is located in Rolling Fork. Additionally, the news report citing coroners from different counties also confirmed two deaths in Monroe County and three in Carroll County. While a Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper said that one person had died in Silver City, reported ABC news. <p>US corporate due diligence firm Mintz Group said on Thursday (March 16) that its office in Beijing was raided by Chinese authorities and that five company employees were detained. This has put foreign companies in China on alert in the run up to international economic forum due to take place in the country.</p>

<p>Relations between the US and China have spiralled downwards after months of diplomatic tension over many issues including that of US military downing a suspected Chinese spy balloon.</p>

<p>"We can confirm that Chinese authorities have detained the five staff in Mintz Group's Beijing office, all of them Chinese nationals, and have closed our operations there," the company said in an emailed statement to Reuters late on Thursday.</p>

<p>It said it was ready to work with the Chinese authorities to "resolve any misunderstanding that may have led to these events", and that its top concern was the safety and wellbeing of colleagues in China.</p>

<p>"Mintz Group has not received any official legal notice regarding a case against the company and has requested that the authorities release its employees," the company said.</p>

<p>Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Friday she was not aware of this case.</p>

<p>Reuters said citing sources that the raid had taken place on the afternoon of March 20 and that the employees were being held somewhere outside Beijing.</p>

<p>As per Mintz Group's website, the Beijing office is its only one in mainland China. The website says the company specialises in background checking, fact gathering and internal investigations. Its wide-ranging clients include the National Football League, New York City and The Beatles, according to media reports.</p>

<p>Eric Garcetti on Friday was formally sworn in as the next US Ambassador to India, over two-and-half years after his name was originally announced for the position.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Garcetti was sworn in by US Vice President Kamala Harris at an event which saw the presence of Garcetti's daughter Maya, his wife Amy Wakeland, father Gil Garcetti, mother Sukey Garcetti, and mother-in-law Dee Wakeland.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It feels great. Can't wait to serve," Garcetti, 52, said, as per reports. "I'm so honoured the vice president did this," he added.&nbsp;Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff also attended the event.</p>

<p>Garcetti, when asked about when he plans to travel to India, said, "Hopefully as soon as I can."</p>

<p>Together, Harris and Garcetti rose to prominence in California politics. Harris is of Indian and Jamaican origin, while Garcetti is Jewish and Mexican American. Garcetti talked about their shared links as mixed-race people.</p>
