The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a warning about possible flight rerouting and delays in various regions, including the Northeast, Atlanta, Denver, and Florida airports, due to adverse weather conditions in the United States,

Concurrently, severe thunderstorm watches have been activated from New England to Washington, DC, with New York City's airports experiencing significant impacts and delays, according to ABC news.

As the region braces for severe storms and potential flash floods, New England is also facing the onset of a heatwave, which is expected to persist for several days.

Flight disruptions and cancellations

The FAA cautions that flights across the Northeast, as well as in major airports such as Atlanta, Denver, and Florida, may be rerouted and held due to the impending severe weather conditions. As of the present, over 730 U.S. flights have already been cancelled on Thursday (July 27), and the situation remains closely monitored.

US: FDA approves 'RiVive', second over-the-counter opioid overdose reversal drug

On July 13 and 14, Wang Yi, the newly re-appointed Chinese Foreign Minister visited Jakarta to attend the 56th ASEAN Regional Forum and the 13th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meetings. During these meetings, Wang held several bilateral exchanges, including with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He also participated in an ‘ASEAN+3’ meeting, with representatives from the ten countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as Japan and South Korea. His engagements aimed at assuaging regional anxieties surrounding China’s belligerent rise and its intensifying rivalry with the US. However, his meeting with Blinken said otherwise.

In his speech at the ARF Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Wang presented a three-point proposal for regional security, and in his subsequent meeting with the ASEAN+3 countries, he discussed three ways for the partnership to progress. Both of these comprised his central message to regional countries, which was that China is the right developmental partner for regional countries to embrace, and any contentions pertaining to economic or military security must be addressed without inviting interference from an external actor.

For example, in his introductory speech, Wang stated that the region must promote ‘common’, ‘cooperative’, and ‘universal’ security, which was a reiteration of the primary principles of Xi Jinping’s flagship Global Security Initiative (GSI), and sought to undermine the American security predominance in favour of a China-led model. He also emphasised ‘pragmatic cooperation’ to build mutual trust. To that end, Wang suggested that regional countries find “less sensitive” areas of cooperation, which potentially include counter-piracy, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR), and climate change, and may fare better in their prospect of building mutual trust. He also emphasised “adherence to inclusiveness;” an emphasis that serves to provide an alternative approach to the US's 'Free and Open' Indo-Pacific concept.

Also Read | China employs 'nuclear cabbage' strategy for dominance in South China Sea

The economic overtone was even more evident in his address to the ASEAN+3 meeting, where he proposed that the member countries should “uphold opening-up and cooperation,” accelerate the regional integration, allow for Hong Kong’s accession to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and acknowledge China’s leading role in the construction of “stable, smooth and comparative advantage-based regional production and supply chains.” He also reminded member countries of China’s contributions to the ASEAN Emergency Rice Security Mechanism and Electric Vehicle Ecosystem, while also claiming that China is their best bet in their quest towards poverty alleviation and rural empowerment. The essence of his arguments is two-fold: one is that China is open for business and is seeking increased interlinkedness. The second is that because China has already experimented successfully with policies on food security, EV supply chain management and poverty alleviation, it is now projecting itself as the most appropriate business partner for ASEAN countries to approach – which is also how China understands ‘pragmatic cooperation’.

However, Wang’s message was received with caution and suspicion by ASEAN member countries. The lack of significant progress in deliberations over competing claims in the South China Sea overshadowed any hope for substantive confidence-building. The ARF Foreign Ministers’ meeting witnessed the second reading of the draft of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, which has been pending for 20 years, and the issuance of a guideline document on speeding up the negotiations on the CoC. However, the final Chairman’s Statement of the 13th EAS Foreign Ministers’ meeting sounded the warning that any further discussion on the CoC must be undertaken in the spirit of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Seas, to “reduce tensions and the risk of accidents, misunderstandings, and miscalculation.” Moreover, just a few days before these meetings, the Philippines marked seven years of the award of the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling against China in 2016, which invited an infuriated response from China. So clearly while there might be greater talk of cooperation, security anxieties and competition remain the dominant motif in the region.

Moreover, the proceedings of the Wang-Blinken meeting on the sidelines of the ARF Foreign Ministers’ meeting also did not yield a lot of confidence, even though it was a positive sign that the two sides were conducting high-level dialogue. During the meeting, Wang highlighted that to mend their relations, the two sides need to resolutely stop “gray rhinos”, properly handle “black swans” and thoroughly remove “tigers blocking the way”. Essentially, his message to the US was that short and long-term high-impact incidents, such as Taiwan-related contingencies or the controversy surrounding the Chinese ‘spy balloon’, need to be managed more “rationally” in order to bring some semblance of stability in the relationship. This also serves as China’s acknowledgment that the relationship is indeed at its lowest point at the current juncture.

Regional countries, especially ASEAN member states, see the bettering of US-China relations as absolutely essential to peace and stability in the region. This sentiment is echoed in Indonesian Foreign Minister Marsudi Retno’s statement at Jakarta, in which she said, “The Indo-Pacific is not a battleground. This region must remain stable.” ASEAN countries also seek diversity in partnerships, and expect China to act in a manner that is necessary to build the mutual trust it vehemently propagates. To that end, the conclusion of the CoC and its implementation in good faith is a necessary factor. And as Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan argued at the meeting, even though political will has been expressed to take the CoC forward, it is a “complicated process,” and it has already been two decades since the DoC was signed as an “interim, stopgap” measure.

Overall, regional countries are looking to maximise economic gains, while great powers like China and the US are looking at regional issues from a largely strategic perspective. On July 13 and 14, Wang Yi, the newly re-appointed Chinese Foreign Minister visited Jakarta to attend the 56th ASEAN Regional Forum and the 13th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meetings.

Also Read | China employs 'nuclear cabbage' strategy for dominance in South China Sea The economic overtone was even more evident in his address to the ASEAN+3 meeting, where he proposed that the member countries should “uphold opening-up and cooperation,” accelerate the regional integration, allow for Hong Kong’s accession to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and acknowledge China’s leading role in the construction of “stable, smooth and comparative advantage-based regional production and supply chains.” He also reminded member countries of China’s contributions to the ASEAN Emergency Rice Security Mechanism and Electric Vehicle Ecosystem, while also claiming that China is their best bet in their quest towards poverty alleviation and rural empowerment. It is this dissonance in approach that has created both, a geopolitical dilemma and an opportunity for negotiation for regional countries.
Meng, a lawyer-turned-politician, who represents the sixth Congressional District of New York, has introduced the Diwali Day Act in the US House of Representatives, for making Diwali a federal holiday in the country.

“It’s not just about a day off. It is about making sure that people beyond those who celebrate Diwali, truly understand the holiday and the culture and the contributions of the so many people who celebrate Diwali,” Meng told PTI in an interview on Thursday.

We are very heartened by the steps taken by New York State, for example, in making Diwali a New York City school holiday, which is long overdue. At a briefing, the press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked: “From a presidential perspective, is there any possibility that the president would end up pardoning his son?” “No,” Jean-Pierre replied. Pressed, she said: “I just said no. I answered.” The charges against Hunter Biden were both misdemeanours, and he was expected to plead guilty as part of a deal with federal prosecutors that included a pre-trial diversion programme for the felony guns charge. However, a question from the judge led to the delay of the deal. Republicans accuse Joe Biden of corruption Republicans have raised concerns about Hunter Biden's business affairs and personal struggles with addiction, using them to level accusations of corruption against President Biden and even calling for his impeachment, as reported by Reuters. The controversial use of pardon power The pardon power, established via Article 2 of the US Constitution, grants the president the authority to grant reprieves and pardons for offences against the United States, except in cases of impeachment. Over the years, the use of the pardon power has become increasingly controversial, with some presidents like Bill Clinton and Donald Trump bestowing pardons and acts of clemency on donors and supporters. An ex-Air Force intelligence official told Congress on Wednesday that the US has been hiding a long-running programme that recovers and decodes unidentified flying objects. The Pentagon refuted his allegations. Retired Maj. David Grusch's eagerly awaited appearance before a House Oversight subcommittee marked Congress' most recent venture into the subject of UAPs, or "unidentified aerial phenomena," the term the U.S. government employs in place of "unidentified flying objects."

According to a recent report by the McKinsey Global Institute, more women are likely to lose their jobs by the next decade, as industries shrink due to swift progress in generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automation technology.

With the rapid development of AI, it is predicted that about a third of the working hours across the US economy could be automated by 2030. Industries like customer service, office support and food services are expected to shrink further while the demand for STEM, construction, creative, legal and business professionals will be on the rise.

The report said that about 12 million people will have to abandon shrinking occupations by 2030. The economy may shift in favour of higher-paying jobs, with workers in lower-paying jobs 14 times more likely to switch careers in comparison to those with higher-paying jobs.

Women are 1.5 times more likely than men to change jobs as they are overrepresented in the rapidly shrinking customer service, office support and food service industries, as per the report by McKinsey.

The report added that occupational shifts can be traced back to the Covid-19 pandemic when the US labour market saw 8.6 million changing their jobs.

Based on the report, the impact of AI on women’s jobs can be identified under five broad categories.

1. More women to lose their present jobs

Women make up for a major portion of workers who fall under the lowest wage quintiles (those who earn between $30,800 to $38,200 and less in a year). With the office support and customer service industries shrinking, women engaged in these industries are more likely to lose their jobs by 2030. These shrinking industries presently employ those with relatively less education, including women and people of colour, with Black and Hispanic workers being highly concentrated in production work and food services.

2. Women may be encouraged to stick to family obligations

Looking back at the pandemic, more women left the workforce than men and it took about three years for the number of working women to come on par with the pre-pandemic workforce in the US. Women engaged in lower-wage work often have family obligations, which may discourage them from switching careers and trying a new occupation.

3. Women may need to switch industries

While food, customer and office service industries continue to shrink due to AI, former male dominated fields like construction are facing labour shortages. These gaps can be filled by women, addressing issues regarding diversity in construction. With the US population ageing, there is also an increasing demand for health-care workers which is was also attributed by the structural changes brought about by the pandemic. “We anticipate that the two fastest-growing occupations through the end of this decade will be nurses and home healthcare aides,” the authors said in the report.

4. Women may require to upskill

In order to switch careers, women need to add new skills to their existing skill set. This calls for training programs, effective job matching, different hiring and training practices by employers. Additionally, education among women needs to be prioritised.

5. More women could potentially engage in higher paying jobs

“While our analysis shows a decrease of 1.1 million jobs in the two lowest wage quintiles by 2030, jobs in the highest wage quintile could grow sharply, by 3.8 million,” the authors said. In that respect, although training workers for a desired skill set is difficult for employers, there are chances to recruit from "overlooked populations", including workers without college degrees and workers with employment gaps. This could potentially indicate an increase the number of women employed in higher-paying jobs.

Artificial Intelligence to impact more women than men in the US. Here's why

Is America hiding Alien technology? 3 whistleblowers have testified before the U.S. Congress claiming that the US is privy to extra-terrestrial life. Are their claims credible? Priyanka Sharma reports.

Gravitas: 3 Whistleblowers share evidence on how U.S. is hiding alien technology

During a remarkable congressional hearing, former American intelligence official David Grusch revealed that the US government conducted a "multi-decade" programme aimed at collecting and reverse-engineering crashed unidentified flying objects (UFOs).

Grusch, who was in charge of investigating unexplained anomalous phenomena within a US Department of Defence agency until 2023, spoke before the House oversight committee in Washington, shedding light on the issue of alien life and technology, as reported by the Guardian.

This hearing, prompted by Grusch's previous claims, attracted global interest and ignited discussions about the possibility of a government cover-up regarding UFOs.

Grusch's allegations and whistleblower complaint

Under oath, Grusch disclosed that he had been informed of a long-standing UAP crash retrieval and reverse-engineering programme during his official duties, from which he was denied access.

His whistleblower complaint in 2022 stemmed from his inability to access secret government UFO programmes while being responsible for investigating military and defence agencies' knowledge of aliens and alien craft.

As a result of his claims, Grusch faced severe retaliation that negatively impacted both his professional and personal life.

Also read | Joe Biden’s son Hunter pleads not guilty in tax case, as deal with justice dept falls through

Claims of harm and concealment

Grusch confirmed under questioning that he had knowledge of individuals who had been harmed or injured in the government's efforts to conceal UFO-related information.

Furthermore, he admitted to fearing for his life due to his involvement in the matter. The congressional hearing prompted speculations that the US government might be withholding evidence of alien life and advanced technology, with mixed responses from the public, including scepticism.

Government's lack of cooperation

Co-leading the UFO investigation, Republican Congressman Tim Burchett accused government agencies of lacking cooperation with the oversight committee's investigation. The difficulty in obtaining information and testimony from relevant parties led to frustrations and claims of being stonewalled by federal officials.

Recovery of alien beings and UFOs

Grusch asserted that the US government possessed crashed extraterrestrial vehicles and even recovered alien beings. When asked if there were bodies of pilots piloting these craft, he confirmed the existence of "biologics" that were non-human, based on information from individuals with direct knowledge of the programme. While some details were withheld during the hearing, Grusch had previously claimed the government possessed large alien craft, with varying descriptions in media interviews.

Congressional response and Pentagon denial

Congressman Burchett found Grusch's claims about the recovery of non-human bodies credible, expressing his belief in the existence of alien craft even before the investigation.

However, the Pentagon denied Grusch's accusations of a cover-up, stating that investigators had not found verifiable evidence supporting the existence of programmes related to extraterrestrial materials.

Witness testimonies

The hearing also featured testimonies from other witnesses, such as David Fravor, a former navy commander who recalled seeing a strange object in the sky during a training mission in 2004, and Ryan Graves, a retired navy pilot, who claimed to have encountered unidentified aerial phenomena off the Atlantic coast frequently.

Graves founded a UAP non-profit, "Americans for Safe Aerospace," to voice the concerns of numerous commercial aircrews and military veterans with similar encounters.

Despite the excitement and media speculation surrounding the hearing, some individuals cautioned against reading too much into the claims. Sceptics highlighted that accusations of a government cover-up regarding UFOs have surfaced numerous times in the past without substantial evidence emerging.

The government's ability to keep other significant secrets secret was questioned, leading some to doubt the validity of the long-term concealment of UFO-related information.

Grusch's allegations and whistleblower complaint Under oath, Grusch disclosed that he had been informed of a long-standing UAP crash retrieval and reverse-engineering programme during his official duties, from which he was denied access. Furthermore, he admitted to fearing for his life due to his involvement in the matter. The congressional hearing prompted speculations that the US government might be withholding evidence of alien life and advanced technology, with mixed responses from the public, including scepticism. Government's lack of cooperation Co-leading the UFO investigation, Republican Congressman Tim Burchett accused government agencies of lacking cooperation with the oversight committee's investigation. The difficulty in obtaining information and testimony from relevant parties led to frustrations and claims of being stonewalled by federal officials. Congressional response and Pentagon denial Congressman Burchett found Grusch's claims about the recovery of non-human bodies credible, expressing his belief in the existence of alien craft even before the investigation. However, the Pentagon denied Grusch's accusations of a cover-up, stating that investigators had not found verifiable evidence supporting the existence of programmes related to extraterrestrial materials. Witness testimonies The hearing also featured testimonies from other witnesses, such as David Fravor, a former navy commander who recalled seeing a strange object in the sky during a training mission in 2004, and Ryan Graves, a retired navy pilot, who claimed to have encountered unidentified aerial phenomena off the Atlantic coast frequently. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

US govt is in possession of UFOs and non-human bodies, ex-intelligence official tells Congress

According to evidence provided to Congress on Wednesday by an ex-Air Force intelligence official, the US has been concealing a long-running operation that retrieves and decodes unidentified flying objects. The Pentagon refuted his allegations. The presentation of retired Maj. David Grusch before a House Oversight subcommittee was the most recent incursion by Congress into the topic of UAPs, or "unidentified aerial phenomena," as the US government refers to "unidentified flying objects." The government reported on Thursday that the GDP increased by 2.4 percent on an annualized basis from April through June. This is the second piece of good news for the White House this week after forecasts from the Congressional Budget Office and experts at the Federal Reserve indicated that the United States will avoid a recession this year.
