Presidential elections in the US Are one year away, but the political battleground is heating up. And in the eye of the storm, is the public divide in abortion rights. Can the Biden-led democrats rely heavily on their pro-abortion stance and snatch victory from the pro-life, conservative republican camp?

WeWork, the office-sharing start-up backed by SoftBank Group, which once held the title of the most valuable U.S. start-up, filed for bankruptcy protection, a Reuters report said on Monday. The company's rise and fall has had a profound impact on the global office sector, as it grappled with mounting challenges, including the impact of remote work on its business.

The decision to seek bankruptcy protection is yet another acknowledgment by SoftBank, the Japanese technology conglomerate that owns approximately 60 per cent of WeWork, that the company's survival depends on renegotiating its costly leases.

WeWork has struggled to achieve profitability, primarily due to its expensive leases and the shift in corporate clients' preferences towards remote work.

According to financial data from the second quarter of 2023, 74 per cent of WeWork's revenue was being consumed by lease payments.

In its bankruptcy filing, WeWork reported estimated assets and liabilities ranging from $10 billion to $50 billion. The company is now looking to leverage U.S. bankruptcy code provisions to free itself from heavy leases, as suggested by law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP in an August note to landlords. However, this move has left many landlords anticipating a significant impact on their rental income.

According to Reuters, founder Adam Neumann had led WeWork to an unprecedented valuation of $47 billion, attracting investments from esteemed institutions such as SoftBank, Benchmark, and Wall Street giants like JPMorgan Chase.

Neumann's emphasis on rapid expansion at the cost of profitability, coupled with revelations about his eccentric behaviour, ultimately led to his removal and the derailment of an initial public offering in 2019. This compelled SoftBank to double down on its investment and appoint real estate expert Sandeep Mathrani as CEO. In 2021, SoftBank attempted to take WeWork public via a merger with a blank-check acquisition company, valuing the firm at $8 billion.

Despite managing to amend 590 leases and save approximately $12.7 billion in fixed lease payments, WeWork could not overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Office workers continued to work from home, severely affecting WeWork's business model. With little incentive from struggling landlords to ease lease terms, WeWork found itself in an increasingly untenable situation.

Furthermore, WeWork's clientele, consisting of both large corporations and smaller businesses, reduced their spending amid soaring inflation and economic uncertainty. To compound its problems, WeWork faced stiff competition from its own landlords, as commercial property companies began offering shorter and more flexible leases to adapt to the evolving office sector.

Earlier this year, David Tolley, a former investment banker and private equity executive, succeeded Sandeep Mathrani as WeWork's CEO. Tolley, who had previously helped the debt-ridden satellite communications provider Intelsat emerge from bankruptcy, took the helm in an attempt to steer WeWork towards stability.

Despite engaging in debt restructurings and securing a seven-day extension on an interest payment from creditors just last week, WeWork found itself unable to avert the impending bankruptcy.

Former US president Donald Trump clashed with the judge on Monday (November 6) as he testified in court in the New York civil fraud case, as he became the first former US president to testify as a defendant in more than a century. His court appearance came just a year before presidential elections take place in the US.

As Trump (77) testified, he accused Judge Arthur Engoron of issuing "fraudulent" verdicts. He lashed out at New York State Attorney General Letitia James as a "political hack". James has brought the case against Trump which threatens to severely affect his real estate empire.

"He called me a fraud and he did not know anything about me," Trump said of the judge, who was sitting right next to him, before calling the trial a "political witch hunt."

The former president was admonished by the judge as he testified in court.

"This is not a political rally," said Judge Engoron. "Please, just answer the questions, no speeches."

A visibly angry Engoron even told Trump's lawyer at one point to "control your client."

It has been alleged that Trump, his sons Don Jr and Eric and other executives in the Trump Organization inflated the value of their real estate assets by billions of dollars in order to obtain favourable bank loans and insurance terms.

Trump denied allegations that his company's financial statements were fraudulent.

"They were not really documents that the banks paid much attention to," he said, adding that the value of the "Trump brand" was not considered in the valuation of assets.

Amid the Israel-Hamas war, the US military has announced the entry of a guided missile submarine into the Middle East, a rare move directed at regional adversaries, primarily those backed by Iran. The subs can be equipped with advanced ballistic or Tomahawk cruise missiles.

US Central Command on Sunday (Nov 5) declared on social media that an Ohio-class submarine entered its area of responsibility even as Secretary of State Antony Blinken tours the region. Blinken has so far visited Israel, the West Bank, Turkey, Iraq, Jordan and Cyprus in his second trip to the region since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war.

The Ohio-class is a set of nuclear-powered submarines that can carry up to 24 Trident II D5 nuclear missiles.

These submarines are known for their stealth and ability to operate quietly beneath the ocean’s surface, which renders them undetectable to adversaries.

Rare announcement

It is not usual for the US to announce the movement of its strategic assets like submarines in the area. In fact, American nuclear subs operate in near complete secrecy.

Through this move, the US might want to send a clear message to Iranian proxies in the region, who have of late issued threats of a wider conflict in the area if the Jewish nation fails to roll back its ongoing assault on Gaza.

Also read: Israel-Hamas top developments: Will find & eliminate Hamas` Yayha Sinwar, says Israeli defence minister

The US has already witnessed low-level attacks on its assets in Iraq and Syria. Clearly, Washington DC looks in no mood to let Iranian proxies have their way in the conflict.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had earlier announced that his nation would be reinforcing its security assets in the Middle East and also Israel.

Austin said Sunday that the US was committed to deterring “any state or non-state actor seeking to escalate this conflict,” a clear reference to Iran and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed armed group.

Other US assets in the region

The US has already deployed a number of other navy assets in the area, including two carrier strike groups—the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group and the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group—and an amphibious ready group.

The new submarine that arrived in the region Sunday, which has not been named yet, will further solidify USA’s defensive shield.

In October 2022, the US made public a ballistic missile submarine in the Middle East, when the commander of US Central Command, Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, boarded the USS West Virginia. Kurilla’s visit occurred at an “undisclosed location at sea in international waters,” Central Command said at the time.

These submarines are known for their stealth and ability to operate quietly beneath the ocean’s surface, which renders them undetectable to adversaries. Rare announcement It is not usual for the US to announce the movement of its strategic assets like submarines in the area. In fact, American nuclear subs operate in near complete secrecy. Through this move, the US might want to send a clear message to Iranian proxies in the region, who have of late issued threats of a wider conflict in the area if the Jewish nation fails to roll back its ongoing assault on Gaza. Other US assets in the region The US has already deployed a number of other navy assets in the area, including two carrier strike groups—the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group and the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group—and an amphibious ready group. In a coordinated effort to combat North Korean cyber activities, the United States, South Korea, and Japan have agreed to establish a high-level consultative group. These activities have been identified as a significant source of funding for North Korea's illicit weapons programmes, as reported by South Korea's presidential office, reported Reuters news agency.

Last week, Anne Neuberger, the US deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, engaged in discussions with her counterparts from South Korea and Japan in Washington.

“It is aimed at strengthening the three countries’ effective response capabilities against global cyber threats, including jointly countering North Korea’s cyber activities that are abused as a key source funding its nuclear and WMD programs,” the office said in a statement.

During these deliberations, the three nations reached a consensus to create a framework for a consultative group. This consultative group will facilitate quarterly meetings among the three countries, as per the presidential office's statement.

Turkish police used tear gas and water cannon as hundreds of people at a pro-Palestinian rally on Sunday (05 November) tried to storm an air base that houses U.S. troops, hours before U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was due in Ankara for talks on Gaza. Turkey, which has stepped up its criticism of Israel as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has worsened, supports a two-state solution while hosting members of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Since the Israel-Hamas war started, protests have erupted across the country.

Arizona swings Trump's way

In Arizona, Trump leads with 49 per cent of the vote, whereas Biden trails at 44 per cent, signifying a notable advantage for Trump in this southwestern state.

Michigan's Trump-backed majority

Trump maintains a substantial lead in Michigan with 48 per cent support, leaving Biden trailing at 43 per cent, underscoring his appeal to Michigan voters.

Biden campaign's response

Biden's campaign spokesman, Kevin Munoz, has downplayed the significance of these early predictions, asserting that political landscapes tend to evolve significantly over the course of a year.

The campaign is focusing on reaching and mobilising their diverse voter base and promoting their popular agenda while contrasting it with what they perceive as the "unpopular extremism" of MAGA Republicans.

Demographic insights

The polls also shed light on demographic preferences. Among voters under 30, Biden holds a slim one-percentage-point lead in these states, while his advantage among Hispanic voters has dwindled into the single digits. Trump exhibits a notable advantage in rural areas, doubling Biden's lead among male voters, whereas women still prefer Biden.

Summing up the poll results, Trump holds commanding leads in Nevada, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, with margins ranging from four to ten points. Wisconsin remains the exception, with Biden leading by a mere two points.

A similar CBS poll has predicted that If Trump wins, more voters expect better finances and staying out of war.
