Reuters cited Seema Shah, the chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management, who emphasised the need for caution, stating, "It's important not to overreact and jump to the assumption that an inflationary resurgence is developing."

According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, the consumer price index (CPI) rose by 0.3 per cent in January, following a 0.2 per cent increase in December.

However, gasoline prices experienced a 3.3 per cent drop, mitigating some of the overall inflationary pressures.

Despite the increase in overall prices, the Federal Reserve has signalled a cautious approach towards rate cuts, emphasising the need for sustained evidence of inflation deceleration.

The core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy components, surged by 0.4 per cent last month, the largest increase since May.

This was largely driven by a 0.6 per cent rise in shelter costs, including owners' equivalent rent (OER), which experienced its most substantial increase in nine months.

Economists anticipate that revisions to the CPI data and the increased weighting of housing components could lead to lower inflation readings in the coming months.

The US dollar surged to three-month highs on Tuesday, propelled by robust inflation data that exceeded economists' expectations for January.

According to Reuters, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reported a 0.3 per cent increase on a monthly basis, surpassing the 0.2 per cent forecast.

Year-on-year, the CPI rose by 3.1 per cent, exceeding the estimated 2.9 per cent growth.

These figures reinforced market expectations that the Federal Reserve would maintain interest rates steady in March, boosting the dollar's strength.

"The key message from today's CPI is that it's slowing but less than expected," Dec Mullarkey, Managing Director at SLC Management in Boston told Reuters.

He highlighted that the reading supported the Fed's decision to await further assurance that inflation remained contained.

As a result, the dollar index surged to a three-month high of 104.95, indicating a strong performance against a basket of major currencies.

It was last up 0.7 per cent at 104.89, poised for its most substantial one-day gain since early February.

The greenback's rally extended beyond inflation data, surpassing 150 yen for the first time since November.

Analysts noted that the yen, which had depreciated over 6 per cent against the dollar this year, faced persistent pressure amid revised expectations of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy.

The dollar's strength against the yen prompted speculation of potential intervention by Japanese officials to stabilise the currency.

Market analysts emphasised the market's response to the inflation data, with Federal funds futures indicating no rate cut in March and a lower than 50 per cent probability of easing in May.

Expectations aligned with the Fed's projections, suggesting around three rate cuts this year, as reflected in the "dot plot" released in December.

Analysts anticipate reduced volatility in the market as expectations align with the Fed's forecasts.

In addition to the dollar's surge, the euro depreciated by 0.6 per cent to $1.0707, reaching its lowest level since mid-November.

Meanwhile, in the cryptocurrency market, bitcoin touched $50,383, its highest level since December 2021, before dipping below $50,000 following the CPI data release.

Despite this, bitcoin has experienced an 18 per cent increase this year, supported by regulatory approvals for US-listed exchange-traded funds.

Looking ahead, economists anticipate the US retail sales report, scheduled for Thursday.

Local health officials believe that the unidentified resident of the US state of Oregon who caught the bubonic plague may have gotten it from their pet cat. In a statement, addressing the state’s first confirmed case of the rare bacteria since 2015, the health officials also said that since it was identified and treated in the earlier stages it poses “little risk to the community.”

About the case

The case emerged in Deschutes County, Oregon where officials said that an unnamed person probably caught the disease from their pet cat which was displaying symptoms of the disease.

“All close contacts of the resident and their pet have been contacted and provided medication to prevent illness,” said Dr Richard Fawcett, Deschutes County health officer, in a statement.

The disease was responsible for the Black Death, a bubonic plague, which struck Europe and Asia in the mid-1300s.

About the bubonic plague

The symptoms of plague in humans typically begin two to eight days after exposure to an infected animal or flea. The disease spreads to humans or animals through a bite from an infected flea or by coming in contact with an animal that has been infected by the disease.

The disease is carried by common animals like squirrels, chipmunks, and mice but other rodents can also carry the disease. The symptoms of the plague in humans include fever, nausea, weakness, muscle aches, and/or visibly swollen lymph nodes called buboes.

The disease can progress into a septicemic plague which is a bloodstream infection and/or a pneumonic plague (lung infection), if not diagnosed early. These forms of plague are more severe and difficult to treat.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the country witnesses at least seven human plague cases every year, primarily in rural Southwest and Northwest areas.

US: Republicans oppose aid package for Ukraine as Senate passes bill

The United States Senate, on Tuesday (Feb 13), voted to pass a $95.34 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. However, the bill will likely not pass in the Republican-led House of Representatives as Speaker Mike Johnson rejected the bill as it was being written.

About the Senate vote

The lawmakers in the Democrat-led upper chamber of the US Congress approved the measure in a pre-dawn vote. The measure garnered 70 votes in favour and 29 against, well above the 60-vote threshold for passage and has been sent to the House.

The vote took place before sunrise after eight hardline Republican opponents of sending more aid to Ukraine held an overnight marathon of speeches which went on for more than six hours. Notably, 22 Republican Senators voted in favour of the bill.

The bill also comes after President Joe Biden has been urging Congress for months now to pass the critical foreign aid bill, the lion’s share of which will help Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.

“It's certainly been years, perhaps decades, since the Senate has passed a bill that so greatly impacts not just our national security, not just the security of our allies, but the security of western democracy,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The legislation includes around $60 billion for Ukraine, $14 billion for Israel in its war against the Palestinian militant group Hamas and nearly $5 billion to support US partners in the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan, and deter aggression by China.

The bill also includes a little over $9 billion in humanitarian assistance to civilians in Ukraine, Gaza and the West Bank, and other conflict zones across the world.

Why would the bill fail in the House?

The bill requires the approval of both chambers of Congress before Biden can sign it into law. However, it is unclear whether Johnson would even hold a vote on the measure given that most House Republicans are opposed to further aid to Ukraine.

On Monday (Feb 12), as the $95 billion foreign aid package was still being formulated in the Senate, Johnson indicated that the Republican-led chamber would not take it up as it does not include provisions to address the record flow of migrants across the US-Mexico border.

“In the absence of having received any single border policy change from the Senate, the House will have to continue to work its own will on these important matters,” said Johnson, in a statement late Monday.

It added, “America deserves better than the Senate’s status quo.” This Speaker has previously suggested that the House could split the legislation into separate bills.

Less than a week ago, the $118 billion bipartisan bill that combined an overhaul of the country’s immigration policy and security measures at its border with Mexico with a foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, was rejected by the members of Johnson’s own party in the Senate.

Senate Republicans were expected to block the bill amid opposition and pressure from former US President Donald Trump and members of their own party in the House of Representatives.

The US federal budget deficit saw a significant decline in January, dropping to $22 billion, according to data released by the Treasury Department on Monday.

This sharp decrease was attributed to record receipts for the month, partially driven by a reduction in tax refunds following the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) clearance of a backlog of pandemic-delayed tax returns.

"This January's comparison with a year ago was also significantly helped by the $36 billion bailout of a Teamsters union pension fund in January 2023, as no similar large one-time outlays were recorded this year," noted Treasury officials.

Despite this, outlays for the month increased by 3 per cent to $499 billion, while receipts surged by 7 per cent to $477 billion.

For the fiscal year's first four months, the deficit expanded by $72 billion, reaching $532 billion.

This increase, amounting to 16 per cent, was attributed to rising costs associated with servicing the national debt, as well as heightened outlays for programs such as Social Security, Medicare, and military expenditures.

The Treasury Department reported that both receipts and outlays for the period were at record levels, with receipts climbing by $112 billion to $1.585 trillion, and outlays rising by $184 billion to $2.117 trillion.

Notably, individual tax refunds decreased by $15 billion compared to the previous January, reflecting the IRS's enhanced processing capabilities for paper returns.

Meanwhile, individual withheld receipts experienced a $20 billion increase, driven by robust employment trends.

However, the Treasury's interest costs on the public debt surged by $18 billion in January compared to the previous year, reaching 3.15 per cent due to higher debt levels and an increased weighted average interest rate.

Year-to-date, debt interest costs rose by $96 billion, outpacing outlays for Medicare.

Additionally, costs for Medicare and Social Security saw notable increases, driven by factors such as higher payments for Medicare Advantage plans and cost-of-living adjustments for Social Security beneficiaries.

US January deficit plummets amid record receipts and reduced tax refunds

A significant development unfolded in the legal battle between major US universities and students alleging biased admission practices favouring wealthy applicants. US District Judge Matthew Kennelly in Chicago granted preliminary approval for settlements totalling over $104 million between several prestigious institutions and a proposed class of students on Monday.

The lawsuit, initiated in 2022, accused universities, including Brown, Columbia, and Yale, of unlawfully considering applicants' financial backgrounds in their admission decisions, contrary to claims of being "need-blind." The plaintiffs sought billions of dollars in damages on behalf of hundreds of thousands of current and former students.

Notably, settlements were reached with Brown, Columbia, Yale, Duke, and Emory, among others. Yale and Emory agreed to pay $18.5 million each, Brown committed $19.5 million, and Columbia and Duke pledged $24 million each. Despite the settlements, the universities denied any liability.

According to court filings, average payouts to class members are projected to be $750, with additional settlements pending, including with Vanderbilt University. Eric Cramer, chairman of Berger Montague and legal representative for the students.

Cramer highlighted the students' pursuit of a resolution "at the right amount" with willing institutions, juxtaposed with the determination to litigate against those unwilling to settle reasonably.

The legal battle has also involved disputes over access to student records and depositions of senior leaders at prominent colleges, underscoring the complexity and intensity of the litigation.
