In a first-of-its-kind federal trial, a South Carolina man Daqua Lameek Ritter has been found guilty of the murder of a transgender woman Dime Doe, marking the first such conviction in the country for a hate crime based on gender identity. Following several hours of deliberation, jurors convicted Ritter for the hate crime in the killing of the woman back in 2019.

Ritter was also found guilty of obstructing justice and using a firearm in connection with the killing. He now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. The sentencing date is yet to be scheduled.

Brook Andrews, the first assistant United States attorney for the District of South Carolina, remarked, “It stands as a testament to our commitment to prosecute these crimes. It also stands as a reminder that Dime’s life mattered. It’s a tremendous result for us and the people in that community.”

According to court documents, Ritter, a New York City native, had developed a close relationship with Dime while visiting his grandmother in Allendale, South Carolina.

Dime, who grew up in Allendale and worked as a hairdresser, was 24 at the time of her death.

Prosecutors argued that Ritter became enraged after Ms. Doe made their relationship public, leading to mockery from his friends. Witnesses testified that he threatened to harm Dime as a result.

Responding to the verdict, one of Ritter’s defence lawyers, Joshua Kendrick, acknowledged their disappointment, highlighting what he perceived as inconsistencies in the government’s case.

The moon lander dubbed Odysseus is "alive and well" but resting on its side a day after its white-knuckle touchdown as the first private spacecraft ever to reach the lunar surface, and the first from the U.S. since 1972, the company behind the vehicle said on Friday.

Moon lander Odysseus tipped sideways on lunar surface but 'alive and well'

Odysseus, which etched its name in the history books by becoming the first American US spaceship to have landed on the moon in over 50 years, might have tipped over on the surface of the Earth's natural satellite. Steve Altemus, the CEO of Intuitive Machines, the private company that prepared the spaceship, reportedly said, "We might have fractured that landing gear and tipped over gently."

Odysseus concluded its seven-day voyage to lunar orbit and ultimately carried out maneuvers to softly touch down near Malapert A in the Moon's South Pole region at 5:24 p.m. CST on February 22, according to NASA. The US space agency said that the lander is in good health, harnessing solar power, and relaying data to the company's mission control in Houston.

Odysseus, which etched its name in the history books by becoming the first American US spaceship to have landed on the moon in over 50 years, might have tipped over on the surface of the Earth's natural satellite. Steve Altemus, the CEO of Intuitive Machines, the private company that prepared the spaceship, reportedly said, "We might have fractured that landing gear and tipped over gently." Odysseus concluded its seven-day voyage to lunar orbit and ultimately carried out maneuvers to softly touch down near Malapert A in the Moon's South Pole region at 5:24 p.m. CST on February 22, according to NASA. The US space agency said that the lander is in good health, harnessing solar power, and relaying data to the company's mission control in Houston. In a recent court ruling, a Black teenager named Darryl George faced a setback in his fight against disciplinary action taken by his high school due to his choice of hairstyle. George, who is 18 years old, wears his hair in locs, styled as rope-like strands pinned to his head.

Since August 2023, George has faced isolation from his classmates and various punitive measures at Barbers Hill High School, located outside Houston, all due to allegations that his hairstyle violates the school's dress code.

According to the school's regulations, George's hair is deemed non-compliant because it exceeds specified length limits, extending below the top of a T-shirt collar, below the eyebrows, or below the earlobes when let down.

Legal defence and counter-arguments

George's legal team argued that his chosen hairstyle is protected by the Texas CROWN Act, a law designed to prevent discrimination against hair textures or protective hairstyles associated with racial identity.

However, the law does not explicitly address hair length. Despite this argument, Judge Chap Cain, presiding over the case, upheld Barbers Hill's policy, asserting that it does not contravene the provisions of the CROWN Act.

For George, his hairstyle holds deep significance, serving as a connection to his cultural heritage and ancestors.

"It means a lot to me. It's my roots, you know. It's how I feel closer to my people, closer to my ancestors," George said before the hearing.

"I started my dreads for a reason, and that's just to feel closer to my people," he added.

However, the school's refusal to accommodate his hairstyle has left him feeling marginalised and with a lack of proper educational experience.

Following the court ruling, George's legal representative, Allie Booker, announced intentions to appeal the decision in federal court. Despite the family's efforts to challenge the school's policy, Barbers Hill High School maintains its stance, denying any discriminatory treatment towards George.

The courtroom scene was fraught with emotion as George left in tears, accompanied by his family and supporters. Candice Matthews, a spokesperson for the George family, recounted the teenager's distress, highlighting his disbelief at being sidelined from his education and social interactions solely because of his hairstyle.

"Darryl made this statement, and told me this straight up with tears in his eyes, 'All because of my hair? I can't get my education because of hair? I cannot be around other peers and enjoy my junior year, because of my hair?'" Matthews said.
