Storms including tornadoes struck parts of the South and Midwest US, killing at least one person, knocking down power lines and trees, ripping roofs off homes, and shooting debris thousands of feet into the air. A tornado emergency was briefly issued in Northwest Arkansas, with the National Weather Service telling residents on social media, "This is a life-threatening situation, seek shelter now."

The early reactions to U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs suggest an escalation in trade wars and global trade disruptions. The 'tariff man' showed his hand, and now markets nervously await the response from the rest of the world.

The swing state of Wisconsin has voted in favor of the Democrats in Tuesday's judicial election. The voters' verdict has been seen as a mandate against the Trump administration. Now this is the first such election to be held after Donald Trump assumed presidency in January this year. Watch in for more details!

The US president Donald Trump announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs on Wednesday, including a 10% flat tax on all US imports. Many other nations with the largest trade imbalances with the US face higher rates, even as Trump said he had sweetened the deal by only imposing about half of what other countries charge. Watch in for more details!

Trump's reciprocal tariffs likely to escalate trade war

Whatever US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> may think about India, he&rsquo;s got one thing right, it is the &ldquo;tariff king.&rdquo; India&rsquo;s tariff rates are among the highest in the world, and Trump has called the South-Asian nation out on multiple occasions.
&ldquo;India charges us 100 per cent tariffs; the system is not fair to the US, it never was,&rdquo; Trump said in an address to the Joint Session of the US Congress.
His administration&rsquo;s latest trade report backs him up. The Office of the United States Trade Representative listed India&rsquo;s high tariffs, including a 50 per cent duty on apples (compared to the US, which has no tariffs on apples). India also levies 50 per cent tariffs on corn and motorcycles and 100 per cent tariffs on coffee, raisins, and walnuts.
So, on April 2, Trump hit back with a 26 per cent reciprocal tariff on India. But forget why India has such high tariffs (that&rsquo;s another article in itself); the real question is: how much is this going to cost Prime Minister Narendra Modi?

<h2>A blow to Atmanirbhar Bharat</h2>
Trump&rsquo;s tariffs will be a direct blow to Modi&rsquo;s Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan, or &ldquo;self-reliant India&rdquo; campaign, which has been a core policy since 2020.
Since taking office in 2014, Modi has gradually hiked tariffs to push domestic manufacturing. His government has also rolled out production-linked incentives (PLIs) to attract foreign manufacturers to India by offering them rewards for increasing local production.
The official reason for India&rsquo;s high tariffs? Protecting local industries. These same industries, backed by big businessmen who benefit from these tariffs,&nbsp;are a major source of support (and funding) for the Indian government.
<h2>Indian agriculture to a big hit</h2>
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick asked, &ldquo;Why won&rsquo;t India buy even a single bushel of American corn?&rdquo;
Lutnick wanted India to open up its agricultural sector, accusing India of blocking US farmers. But, while India could minimise tariffs on industrial goods, agriculture is a whole different topic.
Every time the government tries to sign a deal to allow dairy imports, it gets shut down because of the argument that it would drive millions of small farmers into ruin.&nbsp;
The same logic applies to other agricultural products. If India lets in cheap American imports, its farmers will take the brunt, and that&rsquo;s politically not good for Modi, who has already had to backtrack on farm laws after mass protests.

Trump himself has a &lsquo;simple&rsquo; solution for world leaders</a>
<h2>So, what can Modi do? </h2>
The Indian government tried to soften Trump&rsquo;s stance ahead of PM Modi's Washington visit in February by lowering India&rsquo;s highest tariffs (100-150 per cent) on some items, including bourbon whisky.
Motorcycle import taxes also dropped from 50 per cent to 30 per cent, bringing India&rsquo;s average tariff rate down from 11.5 per cent to 10.6 per cent. This did help a bit: both sides agreed to finalise the first phase of a trade deal by autumn and boost trade to $500 billion by 2030 (from $210 billion in 2024).
India also promised to buy more American oil, gas, and arms to reduce its trade surplus with the US. These moves keep talks alive and buy time.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal even flew to Washington to offer further tariff cuts covering 55 per cent of US exports. India also scrapped a 6 per cent tax on digital ads (a win for American tech giants), and Jio and Bharti Airtel struck deals to bring Elon Musk&rsquo;s Starlink satellite internet service to India.
But was that enough for Trump? No. India still landed on his latest tariff retaliation list.
<h2>Can Modi meet Trump&rsquo;s demands?</h2>
If PM Modi backs down too much, he could anger some of his strongest support groups&mdash;farmers and big business. Farmers are already cautious of Modi&rsquo;s policies, and businesses, who have long been protected from foreign competition for far too long, won&rsquo;t exactly be beaming with joy if tariffs drop too low.
Aside from that, Trump&rsquo;s tariffs could also hurt Indian exports. Goldman Sachs estimates that Trump's tariffs could cause a 0.6 per cent drop in India&rsquo;s GDP growth.
That might not seem like a lot right now, but a prolonged trade war could put a serious dent in PM Modi&rsquo;s vision for 'Amrit Kaal.'

Trump announces 26% 'discounted' tariffs on India, says 'PM Modi is a friend, but he hasn't been treating us right'

US President Donald Trump has launched what he calls a "liberation day" event. He announced an executive order that will introduce new "retaliatory tariffs" aimed at countries imposing trade barriers on the United States.
Trump said that 2 April 2025 would be remembered as the day American industry was revived. &ldquo;For decades our country has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered by nations near and far,&rdquo; he said, blaming both allies and adversaries for harming US economic interests.

US President Donald Trump has said that he is not joking about running for the presidency again and there are 'methods' for doing so. While the US Constitution under the 22nd Amendment bars any individual from running for the presidency for the third time, Trump supporters have said that the law can be interpreted differently as well. While any such maneuver would invite legal challenges, and courts would be asked to interpret the meaning of the 22nd Amendment, Trump and his supporters have been reiterating their stance. &nbsp;

Top 10 world news: Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs; India's Waqf Bill Lok Sabha debate, and more

US President Donald Trump is set to announce reciprocal tariffs on a host of nations on Wednesday (Apr 2) at a White House event. Trump has deemed the day as &ldquo;Liberation Day&rdquo; to &ldquo;make America wealthy again.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Here are some of the biggest questions about what Trump has planned.
<h2>Which countries will be affected by Trump&rsquo;s tariffs?</h2>
In March, Treasury Department Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that the administration would target 15 per cent of countries, which are the biggest trade allies of the US. Calling them &lsquo;the Dirty 15&rsquo;, Bessent did not specify their names.

According to a CNBC analysis based on countries with highest goods trade deficits with the US, it will likely include China, Canada, Mexico, the European Union, India, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Austria, Sweden, Ireland, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.
<h2>How will the tariff rates be calculated?</h2>
Bessent earlier said that the administration would not only consider tariffs but also a wide range of trade policies and economic barriers imposed by each nation to calculate its reciprocal tariff rate.
He added that if a country doesn&rsquo;t change its policies they &ldquo;will put up the tariff wall to protect our economy, protect our workers, and protect our industries.&rdquo;

If Trump imposes a flat universal tariff, the administration will have to decide whether to impose the new levies as additional tariffs to the existing ones or replace them.
Trump has already imposed new taxes on goods from Canada, Mexico and China, along with all steel and aluminium imports.
<h2>Why is Trump imposing tariffs?</h2>
Trump has cited a wide range of reasons to defend his sweeping tariffs on foreign goods. He views tariffs as a flexible economic tool, using them to pressure trade partners and support US industries.

The Trump administration says that tariffs will put pressure on Canada, Mexico, and China to reduce illegal migration and drug trafficking into the US. In addition, it would protect US industries like steel, aluminium, and copper, which are essential for national security.&nbsp;
The US president also believes that tariffs on foreign vehicles will support domestic car manufacturers. He further introduced the &ldquo;reciprocal&rdquo; tariffs to prevent other countries from retaliating and imposing higher levies on US goods.
Trump also aims to generate revenue through tariffs that will help fund tax cuts, government spending, and even balance the federal budget.

<h2>What impact will tariffs have on the economy?</h2>
The tariffs imposed by Trump could result in huge costs for businesses and consumers. Higher levies on foreign food, energy and auto parts could lead to higher costs for Americans amid high inflation.
According to economists at Goldman Sachs, Trump&rsquo;s tariffs could boost inflation, slow the economy and raise the unemployment rate.

‘Liberation Day’: Biggest questions on Trump’s reciprocal tariffs answered

US President Donald Trump is just hours away from announcing the major reciprocal tariffs on several nations on "Liberation Day".&nbsp;
Trump took to Truth Social on Wednesday (April 2), posting, "IT&rsquo;S LIBERATION DAY IN AMERICA!", expressing enthusiasm as the whole world awaits his announcement.&nbsp;
The announcement is scheduled to take place at the White House at 4:00 EST (1:30 am IST).&nbsp;
The new tariffs which will be announced on April 2, will take effect immediately. On next day, additional tariffs on cars will begin, according to the White House.

Trump call this day "Liberation Day" because he believes these tariffs will help American businesses. Notably, Trump is open to talking with other governments and business leaders who want lower tariffs, the White House press secretary said.&nbsp;
<h2>How the nations are reacting?</h2>
<h3>'Will hurt both sides': Germany</h3>
Germany on Wednesday warned that trade wars hurt "both sides" as Europe's biggest economy braces for Trump's wide-ranging new "reciprocal tariffs".&nbsp;
"The costs of a trade war do not fall on one side but can become expensive for both sides," government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said.&nbsp;
Berlin was "ready and willing to negotiate at the European level with the United States" to avoid such a dispute," he added.&nbsp;

<h3>'Major economic disorder': France</h3>
Meanwhile, France expects that new US tariffs on European products to be in the range of 20% to 25%, which would lead to &ldquo;major economic disorder,&rdquo; a government spokeswoman said.&nbsp;
"They risk being pretty powerful. People are speaking of tariffs between 20% and 25%," Sophie Primas told reporters.&nbsp;
"This will obviously lead to major economic disorder on the products impacted, not only in Europe but also in the United States," she added.
<h3>'People are going to die': Ireland</h3>
Moreover, Ireland's pharmaceuticals sector is also worried that the impact of new tariffs could drive up the cost of medicines worldwide and disrupt supply chains.&nbsp;
Irish pharma CEO, Gareth Sheridan at Nutriband warned, "We make chemotherapy treatments, we make heart medications, we make antibiotics, we make pain medications, we make diabetes medications. These types of treatments can&rsquo;t afford a disruption in the global supply chain. You know, as a comparable situation, tariffs on automobiles &ndash; if you can&rsquo;t afford a BMW, okay, buy a Ford and you can still get to work."
"If you have a 25% hike on chemotherapy and you can&rsquo;t afford your treatment anymore, what&rsquo;s the alternative? I mean, ultimately, people are going to die, and they&rsquo;re going to die because they can&rsquo;t afford to live," the CEO said.

<h3>'Internet shutdowns': India</h3>
According to a US report, India had the highest average Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) applied tariff rate among major global economies in 2023, standing at 17%&mdash;with 13.5% for non-agricultural goods and 39% for agricultural products.
The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) raised concerns over India&rsquo;s high import duties on farm products, restrictions on imports, foreign direct investment barriers, and regulatory challenges in the insurance sector.
Moreover, it also warned of internet shutdowns in India and disruptions to US digital services.
<h3>'Potential countermeasures': Canada &nbsp;</h3>
Canada also reacted as Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to defend Canadian workers and warned of potential countermeasures.
<h3>'Avert a trade war': Italy</h3>
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warned that the tariffs would severely impact Italian businesses and be unfair to American consumers.&nbsp;
&ldquo;This is the reason why I remain convinced that we must work to avert a trade war that would benefit neither the United States nor Europe in any way,&rdquo; she said.

A request has also been made to the Treasury Department for a temporary suspension of the sanctions. According to US sanctions statements, Dmitriev has been cast as &ldquo;a known Putin ally&rdquo;. He was not sanctioned by the European Union.
The Kremlin on Wednesday (Apr 2) confirmed ongoing communication with Washington and a &ldquo;possible&rdquo; US visit by Dmitriev.

Who is Kirill Dmitriev? Senior Russian official to visit US this week

US President Donald Trump has said that he is not joking about running for the presidency again and there are 'methods' for doing so. While the US Constitution under the 22nd Amendment bars any individual from running for the presidency for the third time, Trump supporters have said that the law can be interpreted differently as well. While any such maneuver would invite legal challenges, and courts would be asked to interpret the meaning of the 22nd Amendment, Trump and his supporters have been reiterating their stance.&nbsp;&nbsp;
<h2>What does the 22nd Amendment say? Can it be changed?</h2>
The 22nd Amendment states, "No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice, and no person who has held the office of president, or acted as president, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected president shall be elected to the office of the president more than once."

Russia issues chilling warning after POTUS's threat to bomb Iran nuclear facilities</a>
It is almost impossible to change the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution. A two-thirds approval from both the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as approval from three-quarters of the country's state-level governments, is required.&nbsp;
The Republican Party controls the Congress but does not have the numbers required to change the Amendment. The Republicans hold 53 of 100 seats in the Senate, and 218 of 435 seats in the House &mdash; well short of the 67 and 290 votes needed for passing a constitutional amendment in the Senate and the House, respectively.
An amendment can also be proposed by a constitutional convention called for by two-thirds of the State legislatures. However, the Democrats control 18 out of the 50 state legislatures.
<h2>Can Trump be the President despite the 22nd Amendment?</h2>
"A lot of people want me to do it...I&rsquo;m not joking," Trump said to NBC News. When asked whether he has been presented with plans to allow him to seek a third term, Trump said, "There are methods which you could do it."&nbsp;
His 'methods' include the interpretation by his supporters that the 22nd Amendment only bans someone being 'elected' to more than two presidential terms but says nothing about 'succession'.&nbsp;

When Trump was asked in a recent interview if Vice President JD Vance would run for the top job, and then pass the baton to him, he said, &ldquo;Well, that&rsquo;s one.&rdquo; So, hypothetically, if US Vice President JD Vance runs and wins for the presidency in 2028, he could be sworn in the White House only to resign and let Trump take over.&nbsp;
Another method of being the president for the third time can be if Republicans controlled the House. The speaker is elected by members of the House, and need not himself be a member of Congress. In that scenario, Trump could be elected as speaker, and then, if the president and vice president agreed to step aside, Trump could become president.&nbsp;

Moreover, Andy Ogles, a Republican in the House of Representatives, introduced a resolution in January this year to allow a president to serve up to three terms as long the terms are not consecutive. Trump won in 2016, lost in 2020, and won again in 2024. Ogles' proposal became the talk of the town but has not made any significant progress legally. However, other Republican lawmakers can move a similar resolution in the future in favour of Trump's third term.&nbsp;
Another report has suggested that Trump may run for vice-presidency and while being the vice president, he may act as the de-facto president.

World | US President Donald Trump wants to become president again and despite the 22nd Amendment setting a two-term limit, here's how Trump can do it

US President Donald Trump has said that he is not joking about running for the presidency again and there are 'methods' for doing so. While the US Constitution under the 22nd Amendment bars any individual from running for the presidency for the third time, Trump supporters have said that the law can be interpreted differently as well. While any such maneuver would invite legal challenges, and courts would be asked to interpret the meaning of the 22nd Amendment, Trump and his supporters have been reiterating their stance. What does the 22nd Amendment say? Can it be changed? The 22nd Amendment states, "No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice, and no person who has held the office of president, or acted as president, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected president shall be elected to the office of the president more than once." Russia issues chilling warning after POTUS's threat to bomb Iran nuclear facilities It is almost impossible to change the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution. A two-thirds approval from both the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as approval from three-quarters of the country's state-level governments, is required. The Republican Party controls the Congress but does not have the numbers required to change the Amendment. The Republicans hold 53 of 100 seats in the Senate, and 218 of 435 seats in the House — well short of the 67 and 290 votes needed for passing a constitutional amendment in the Senate and the House, respectively. An amendment can also be proposed by a constitutional convention called for by two-thirds of the State legislatures. However, the Democrats control 18 out of the 50 state legislatures. Can Trump be the President despite the 22nd Amendment? "A lot of people want me to do it...I’m not joking," Trump said to NBC News. When asked whether he has been presented with plans to allow him to seek a third term, Trump said, "There are methods which you could do it." His 'methods' include the interpretation by his supporters that the 22nd Amendment only bans someone being 'elected' to more than two presidential terms but says nothing about 'succession'. Another method of being the president for the third time can be if Republicans controlled the House. The speaker is elected by members of the House, and need not himself be a member of Congress. In that scenario, Trump could be elected as speaker, and then, if the president and vice president agreed to step aside, Trump could become president. Read more | Price hikes incoming! Trump won in 2016, lost in 2020, and won again in 2024. Ogles' proposal became the talk of the town but has not made any significant progress legally. However, other Republican lawmakers can move a similar resolution in the future in favour of Trump's third term. Another report has suggested that Trump may run for vice-presidency and while being the vice president, he may act as the de-facto president. Has any US president run the third term? Days ago, Trump suggested he might consider pursuing a third term in office, despite the US Constitution barring it under the 22nd Amendment.
In a phone interview with NBC News on Sunday morning, he said there were ways this could happen and made clear he was &ldquo;not joking&rdquo;.
&ldquo;A lot of people want me to do it,&rdquo; Trump said, referring to support from his allies. &ldquo;But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it&rsquo;s very early in the administration,&rdquo; he said.
