However, the US State Department later withdrew the statement. “An Indian Enquiry Committee that was established to investigate activities of certain organized criminals is actively investigating the individual who was identified last year in the Department of Justice’s indictment as an Indian government employee who directed a foiled plot to assassinate a US citizen in New York City,” the statement read. "Additionally, India has informed the United States they are continuing their efforts to investigate other linkages of the former government employee and will determine follow-up steps, as necessary," the US state department added in its statement. In a shocking claim, a retired senior Pentagon official said that a UFO "mother ships" had been "releasing swarms of smaller craft" which has added more mystery to the intrusions over multiple US military bases.

The statement came at a time when the Air Force's 50-page records revealed about the provocative 'drone' incursions, which one general called "Close Encounters at Langley."

As per the report, last December, multiple noisy and small UFOs were spotted at dusk for nearly 17 nights "moving at rapid speeds" and displaying "flashing red, green, and white lights" which penetrated the highly restricted airspace which was above Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.

Speaking to DailyMail.com, senior ex-Pentagon security official Chris Mellon said that the event was "part of a much larger pattern affecting numerous national security installations."

The experimental spaceplane of the US Space Force called X-37B is set to use the atmospheric drag of Earth for the first time to change its own orbit.

This spaceplane has been in space for more than 10 months. The X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle was launched by SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket on December 29, 2023.

This is the seventh time the spaceplane has entered orbit and big plans have been made by the Space Force for the last leg of the journey of the test vehicle around the Earth.

The spaceplane will start a series of orbital manoeuvres called as aerobraking in which they use the drag of the atmosphere of Earth to change its orbit while trying to expend minimal fuel, announced the Space Force on Thursday (Oct 10).

A woman in the United States has been claiming that she is a "real-life vampire" and has been feeding on the energy of humans.

The woman, identified as Hellen Schweizer, has earned for herself the title "Vampire Hellie" and is known to wear cloaks and fangs.

The 29-year-old claims to "feed on people's energy" and eat bloody sausages and has now become a viral sensation.

Hellie says she does not like daylight and when she is out in the sun, her energy is depleted and she feels nauseous, irritable and dizzy.

Woman embodies life of vampire

The woman, who hails from Ohio, United States, said that vampirism interested her from an early age, but when she grew older, she did more research on it and started to live her life like a vampire.

Speaking to The Mirror, Hellie said, "I was interested in vampires from a young age, but because I grew up in a religious household, I was not encouraged."

She does a lot of live videos, and speaks in a hushed voice, where she creates "what would you do if this vampire entered your home" videos while in costume.

"People love me dressing up, and I embrace that - it is very good for business. It really did start out as a cosplay on TikTok for fun, but one day I looked at myself in the mirror and thought, 'this is not the costume'. When all of the fangs and costume are off - that's the costume. So I started digging deeper into what real vampirism is," Hellie said.

"While I do love wearing fangs, that's not exactly what being a real vampire is all about," she added.

"For me, I feed off energy. Not in the sense of sucking the energy out of a room, but energy is everywhere and is in every living thing, and there is ambient energy, which is great and you can take that. In a spiritual sense, I don't have enough energy of my own, so I need a little help from my friends," Hellie said.

Former United States President Barack Obama on Thursday (Oct 10) made his first appearance on the campaign trail for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris urged men in particular to support the vice president and not make any "excuses".

Obama was speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania and at an event for Black voters, where he specifically urged the Black men in the swing state to support Harris.

He questioned their unwillingness to vote for her. According to a September NAACP poll, over one-quarter of Black men under 50 say they will vote for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

“We have not yet seen the same kinds of energy and turnout in all quarters of our neighborhoods and communities as we saw when I was running. Now, I also want to say that that seems to be more pronounced with the brothers,” Obama said.

Obama added, "When we get in trouble and the system isn’t working for us, they’re the ones out there marching and protesting.”

The former US president while addressing the Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, called on residents of the crucial swing state to vote for Harris and down-ballot for other Democratic candidates like Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey.

“We need a president who actually cares about solving problems and making your life better, and that’s what Kamala Harris will do,” Obama said. “And to help her do it, she will need a Senate full of serious public servants like Bob Casey.”

According to recent surveys released by Quinnipiac University, Harris was leading in Pennsylvania, but polling between her and Trump has been close.

Obama-Harris' bond during the campaigns

Barack Obama and Kamala Harris have been supporting each other's campaigns for a long time now. Harris was an early supporter of Obama’s long-shot bid against Hilary Clinton, starting in 2007 when she knocked on doors for him ahead of the Iowa caucuses.

Similarly, in 2010, Obama backed Harris when she ran for attorney-general of California, calling her "a dear, dear friend of mine".

Further slamming Trump in his Pittsburgh event, Obama said, "This election is going to be tight because there are a lot of Americans who are still struggling out there.”

“I get why people are looking to shake things up. I mean, I am the hope-y, change-y guy. So I understand people feeling frustrated. We can do better. What I cannot understand is why anybody would think that Donald Trump will shake things up in a way that is good for you."

He added, "The good news is, Kamala Harris – she doesn’t have concepts for a plan. She has an actual plan to make your life better.”

Obama's 'diaper' joke at Trump

Taking another jibe at the Republican presidential candidate, Obama shared a personal story related to the high cost of diapers when his first daughter Malia was born in 1998. “I remember buying diapers after Malia was born and thinking, ‘That’s how much they cost?’” Obama said to the crowd.

“Do you think Donald Trump ever changed a diaper?” Barack Obama said.

The crowd laughed and someone in the audience quickly responded, "His own!". Obama laughed and pointed to the audience member, clearly amused by the joke.

“I almost said that,” the former US president chuckled, “But I decided I shouldn’t say it.”

A group of 14 US states on Tuesday filed lawsuits accusing TikTok of ensnaring young users with addictive features, then harming their minds and violating their privacy.

The wave of local court lawsuits demanding corrective measures and financial penalties comes as the popular video-snippet-sharing app faces a ban in the United States if it remains owned by China-based ByteDance.

"Our investigation has revealed that TikTok cultivates social media addiction to boost corporate profits," California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a news release issued jointly with officials from other states.

"TikTok intentionally targets children because they know kids do not yet have the defenses or capacity to create healthy boundaries around addictive content."

"We've endeavored to work with the Attorneys General for over two years, and it is incredibly disappointing they have taken this step rather than work with us on constructive solutions to industry-wide challenges," TikTok spokesman Michael Hughes said in response to an AFP inquiry.

Hughes cited what he said were TikTok safeguards that include booting users suspected of being younger than 13, default screen time limits, and privacy settings for minors using the app.

"Young people are struggling with their mental health because of addictive social media platforms like TikTok," said New York Attorney General Letitia James.

"TikTok claims that their platform is safe for young people, but that is far from true," she added.

TikTok is battling the US ban threat in a federal appeals court, arguing that it violates free speech rights.

A law poised to take effect early next year requires the app to divest from its Chinese ownership or be banned in the United States.

The US government alleges that TikTok allows Beijing to collect data and spy on users. It also says TikTok is a conduit to spread propaganda. China and the company strongly deny these claims.

TikTok has until January to find a buyer or face the ban, which would upend the social media business and rile many of the app's 170 million US users.

Historian Allan Lichtman, who is also known as polling 'Nostradamus', said that he will not revisit his predictions about Democratic nominee Kamala Harris defeating her Republican challenger Donald Trump in the November elections in the United States because of the "so-called" October surprise.

Since 1984, the 77-year-old American University professor, who created his own election model, has made the right prediction regarding every presidential winner.

In recent years, a notorious “October surprise” came just a month before the 2016 US election when the Washington Post got a leaked “Access Hollywood” tape in which Trump was shown making shocking remarks regarding how he treats women.

“I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything… Grab ’em by the p—y. You can do anything,” Trump was heard saying to TV host Billy Bush in the 2005 clip.

At present, there are approximately 12,100 nuclear warheads in existence. Nearly 88 per cent of these are held by just two countries, Russia and the United States, according to Statista.

Other nations that possess nuclear weapons include France, China, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, India, Israel, and North Korea. Russia holds the largest number of confirmed nuclear weapons, with more than 5,500 warheads in its arsenal.

Former Russian minister Andrei Kozyrev believes President Vladimir Putin is unlikely to use nuclear weapons against the West. However, Putin has made what some see as threats to use them if his invasion of Ukraine faces further interference.

Nuclear weapons are seen as the most destructive on Earth. When detonated, they cause massive destruction and release intense heat and radiation, leading to long-term environmental damage that can last for years.

As reported by express.co.uk, a single bomb has the potential to wipe out an entire city, and the impact can be felt as far as 53 miles (around 85 km) away, depending on the bomb's size. People within this range may even experience temporary blindness if they are looking directly at the explosion.

Nuclear bombs have been used only once in history when the United States dropped two on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. While the exact number of deaths is uncertain, it’s estimated that around 140,000 people were killed in Hiroshima and at least 74,000 in Nagasaki.

The bombs released nuclear radiation that led to thousands more deaths from radiation sickness over the following weeks, months, and even years.

The creation of these powerful weapons started the Nuclear Arms Race, a competition for dominance in nuclear warfare between the United States, the Soviet Union, and their allies in the years that followed.

This race continued throughout the Cold War, reaching its height in 1986 when over 64,000 nuclear warheads were believed to be in circulation worldwide.

But as the Soviet Union collapsed and the Cold War ended, tensions between the East and West eased, leading to the beginning of nuclear disarmament.

Since the 1980s, Russia's nuclear stockpile has reportedly shrunk by nine times, while the US arsenal is now six times smaller.

Can nuclear bombs be intercepted?

In short, nuclear bombs can be intercepted, but it's a very challenging task.

Ballistic missiles are used to carry and launch nuclear bombs along a specific flight path.

In the 1960s, during the height of the Nuclear Arms Race, the Soviet Union created anti-ballistic missiles to defend the USSR from ballistic missile threats.

These anti-ballistic missiles (ABMs) are designed to intercept and destroy nuclear missiles before they reach their target.

ABMs work by detecting and tracking an incoming ballistic missile, and then launching an interceptor to destroy it.

This is typically done using a booster rocket that either collides with the missile to destroy it on impact or uses a blast fragmentation warhead to detonate the missile's payload without causing a nuclear explosion.

Even if an ABM successfully destroys a missile, there’s still a chance that plutonium or uranium could be scattered in the area, leading to a radiation risk.

However, this outcome is still far better than the destruction of an entire city.

How do nuclear bombs work?

The effects of a nuclear explosion can vary widely based on several factors. These include the type of weapon (whether it uses fission or fusion) and its power. The location of the blast also matters—whether it occurs in the air (and at what height), on the ground, underground, or underwater. Weather conditions, environmental factors, and the nature of the target (such as a city, countryside, or military site) all play significant roles in determining the impact.

When a nuclear weapon explodes, it creates a fireball with temperatures as hot as the Sun's core or centre. The energy released spreads in different ways.

About 85 per cent of the energy from a nuclear explosion goes into creating a powerful blast and intense heat. The other 15 per cent is released as radiation. This includes immediate radiation within the first minute and lasting radiation over time, which can include local fallout.

Local fallout (radioactive debris that falls back to the ground) refers to the radioactive particles that settle back to Earth after a nuclear explosion.

Blast

When a nuclear explosion occurs, extremely hot gases expand rapidly, creating a shock wave that moves outward at high speed.

The "overpressure," or intense pressure, at the front of the shock wave, can be measured in pascals (or kilopascals (kPa)), pounds per square inch (psi), and kilograms per square centimetre (kg/cm²). For reference, 1 psi is about 6.9 kPa or 0.07 kg/cm².

The higher the overpressure, the more likely a building will be damaged by the sudden force of the shock wave.

Another damaging effect is the "dynamic pressure," which is the strong, fast-moving (or high-velocity) wind that follows the shock wave.

A typical two-story, wood-frame house will collapse under an overpressure of about 0.35 kg/cm² (five psi).

Atmospheric pressure at sea level is about 14.7 psi (10.3 kg/cm²). A pressure of 5 psi (0.35 kg/cm²) is significantly higher than normal atmospheric pressure (14.7 psi is what we experience constantly). When a sudden additional pressure of five psi from a shock wave hits, it exerts a powerful force that can cause structural damage, leading to collapse.

A one-megaton (about 1,000,000 kilograms of TNT) explosion at 3,000 metres (10,000 feet) high can create this level of overpressure (5 psi) up to 7 km (about 4 miles) from the blast.

The strong winds following the blast can throw a person against a wall with several times the force of gravity.

The force of gravity is the pull that Earth exerts on objects, measured as 9.8 metres per second squared (m/s²).

Within 8 km (5 miles) of the blast, few people outside or in regular buildings are likely to survive.

The initial shock wave creates huge amounts of debris, like bricks, glass, wood, and metal, which fly at speeds over 160 km/h (100 mph), causing more destruction.

Thermal Radiation

About 35 per cent of the energy from an airburst is released as thermal radiation, which includes light and heat. This can cause skin burns, and eye injuries, and start fires over long distances.

The shock wave can spread fires even more. If these fires are large enough, they can merge into a firestorm. This creates a huge column of hot air that pulls in fresh air from around it.

Winds rushing inward and the intense heat in a firestorm burn almost everything that can catch fire.

Initial radiation

A unique aspect of a nuclear explosion is the release of nuclear radiation, which is divided into initial radiation and residual radiation.

Initial radiation, or prompt radiation, includes gamma rays and neutrons released within a minute of the explosion. It also produces beta particles (free electrons) and a small number of alpha particles (helium nuclei i.e., two protons and two neutrons bound together), but these usually don't reach the ground if the explosion happens high above the ground.

Gamma rays and neutrons can harm living things and remain dangerous over long distances because they can penetrate most buildings.

Although gamma rays and neutrons make up only about three per cent of the energy from a nuclear blast, they can cause a large number of injuries and deaths. They can lead to radiation sickness, cancer, and other serious health issues.

Residual radiation

Residual radiation is the radiation released more than one minute after the explosion. In an airburst, this mainly comes from the weapon's debris.

If the explosion happens on or near the ground, dirt, water, and nearby materials are pulled up by the rising cloud, leading to local and global fallout.

Delayed fallout arrives after the first day. It consists of tiny particles carried by the wind, spreading thinly over large areas of the Earth.

A nuclear explosion creates a complex mix of over 300 different isotopes from many elements. These isotopes have half-lives ranging from fractions of a second to millions of years.

The radioactivity of fission products is very high initially but decreases quickly due to radioactive decay.

Seven hours after a nuclear explosion, the leftover radioactivity drops to about 10 per cent of its level at one hour. After 48 more hours, it decreases to one per cent.

As a simple guideline, for every seven times increase in time after the explosion, the radiation level drops by ten times.

For example, if the radiation level is 100 units one hour after an explosion, seven hours later it would decrease to 10 units. After 49 hours (seven times seven), it would drop to 1 unit.

At present, there are approximately 12,100 nuclear warheads in existence. Nearly 88 per cent of these are held by just two countries, Russia and the United States, according to Statista.

Baby found disfigured by rats in 'house of horrors'; Indiana father sentenced to 16 years in prison

A US labour board issued a complaint accusing Apple of violating employees' rights to organise and advocate for better working conditions by maintaining a series of unlawful workplace rules.

The National Labor Relations Board in the complaint announced late on Monday claims Apple required employees nationwide to sign illegal confidentiality, non-disclosure, and non-compete agreements and imposed overly broad misconduct and social media policies.

The complaint accuses Apple of "interfering with, restraining, and coercing employees in the exercise of" their rights under federal labor law.

Apple, in a statement provided by a spokesperson, said it has always respected its employees' rights to discuss wages, hours, and working conditions, which is reflected in its employment policies.

"We strongly disagree with these claims and will continue to share the facts at the hearing," the company said.

If Apple does not settle the case, it will be heard by an administrative judge beginning in January. The agency is seeking to require Apple to rescind the allegedly unlawful rules and notify its entire US workforce of their legal rights.

Administrative judges' decisions can be reviewed by the five-member labor board, whose rulings can be appealed to federal appeals courts.

The complaint stems from charges filed against Apple in 2021 by Ashley Gjovik, a former senior engineering manager at the company. Gjovik said various Apple rules, including those relating to confidentiality and social media use, deter employees from discussing issues such as pay equity and sex discrimination with each other and the media.

Gjovik also filed a lawsuit in California federal court in May accusing Apple of illegally retaliating against her for filing the NLRB complaints and attempting to organize other workers. Apple has denied wrongdoing and has moved to dismiss the case.

A senior United States (US) defence official said on Thursday (Sept 26) that China's newest nuclear-powered attack submarine sank earlier this year, a potential embarrassment for Beijing as it seeks to expand its military capabilities. Speaking to the news agency Reuters, the official said that China's new first-in-class nuclear-powered attack submarine sank alongside a pier sometime between May and June. The official chose to remain anonymous. 'No information to provide' Reacting to the comments made by the senior US defence official, a Chinese embassy spokesperson in the US said that Beijing had no information to provide. As of 2022, China had six nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, six nuclear-powered attack submarines and 48 diesel-powered attack submarines, according to a Pentagon report on China's military. That submarine force is expected to grow to 65 by 2025 and 80 by 2035, the US Defense Department has said. Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub spent 374 days in low-Earth orbit at the ISS, the longest time anybody has ever stayed on the station in a continuous stint.

During his stay, Kononenko, 60, also set a new record for the longest cumulative time any person has spent in space -- passing the three-year mark with a total of 1,111 days across five trips.

American astronaut Tracy Dyson, who took off for the station in March, also returned to Earth.

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris raised more than triple the funds for her presidential campaign when compared to her Republican rival Donald Trump in the month of August, the United States Federal Election Commission (FEC) said in the latest figures.

Harris and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) saw $257 million flow into their coffers, compared with $85 million raised by Trump and the Republican National Committee (RNC). Democrats have witnessed an increase in financial fundraising since US President Joe Biden called off his re-election bid.

The FEC highlighted that Harris' Democratic campaign, her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and the DNC have $286 million to use in the final two months before the election on November 5, compared with Trump's $214 million.

The FEC revealed that spending on the Harris-Walz campaign reached $174 million last month, almost three times as much as the Trump campaign outlays of $61 million.

However, the campaign and national committee spending together showed a less extreme split. Harris and the Democrats splurged $258 million last month into her sprint for the presidency.

Meanwhile, Trump and the Republicans spent $121 million on campaign advertising and costs which was reportedly $36 million more than they raised that month.

The United States has extended its support to India's call for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), after which the Quad leaders (US, India, Japan and Australia) also emphasised the need for comprehensive reform of the UN body in their joint statement.

The support was extended after bilateral talks were held between US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Quad summit in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday (Sep 21).

"President Biden shared with Prime Minister Modi that the United States supports initiatives to reform global institutions to reflect India's important voice, including permanent membership for India in a reformed UN Security Council," said the White House, in a statement.

Quad members - India, Australia, Japan, and the United States - signed the 'Wilmington Declaration,' in which they underscored the need to reform the UN Security Council (UNSC) to make it more representative, inclusive, transparent, efficient, effective, democratic, and accountable.

The members underlined the need to expand the UNSC and ensure more representation from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

"Together, with our global and regional partners, we continue to support international institutions and initiatives that underpin global peace, prosperity and sustainable development. We reiterate our unwavering support for the UN Charter and the three pillars of the UN system," read the joint declaration.

"While some members of the advance team were very diligent, there was complacency on the part of others that led to a breach of security protocols."

Among the failures identified by Rowe were poor communication with local law enforcement, an "over-reliance" on mobile devices "resulting in information being siloed" and line of sight issues, which "were acknowledged but not properly mitigated."

Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle resigned in the aftermath of the incident and several additional Secret Service agents have been put on leave.

The all-important sixth Quad Leaders' Summit - fourth in-person - is scheduled at around 4 PM EST (around 1.30 AM, India time on Sunday) at Archmere Academy, where Biden attended High school.

After the plenary session, the Quad leaders will gather together for the unveiling of the Cancer Moonshot event, a signature initiative that aims at implementing innovative strategies to prevent, detect, treat, and alleviate the impact of cancer on patients and their families.

It is for the first time that Biden will also be hosting foreign leaders in Wilmington as President - including an "intimate leaders' dinner" at his private home following the Moonshot event - which the White House believes is "a reflection of his deep personal relationships with each of the Quad Leaders", and the importance of the Quad to all countries.

"I look forward to joining my colleagues President Biden, Prime Minister Albanese, and Prime Minister Kishida for the Quad Summit. The forum has emerged as a key group of like-minded countries to work for peace, progress and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. My meeting with President Biden will allow us to review and identify new pathways to further deepen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership for the benefit of our people and the global good," said PM Modi before his departure, on Saturday.

The US Justice Department filed a lawsuit on Wednesday seeking more than $100 million from the Singapore owner and operator of a cargo ship that destroyed a Baltimore bridge.

The 1,000-foot (300-metre) M/V Dali collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, killing six road workers and blocking the busy shipping channel.

The civil suit against Grace Ocean Private and Synergy Marine Private was filed in the US District Court for the District of Maryland.

"The Justice Department is committed to ensuring accountability for those responsible for the destruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

"With this civil claim, the Justice Department is working to ensure that the costs of clearing the channel and reopening the Port of Baltimore are borne by the companies that caused the crash, not by the American taxpayer."

The Justice Department said the suit is aimed at recovering more than $100 million in costs incurred in responding to the disaster and for removing tons of bridge debris.

The Dali lost power while leaving the port of Baltimore for Sri Lanka and struck the bridge.

Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General Benjamin Mizer said the owner and operator of the Dali were "well aware of vibration issues on the vessel that could cause a power outage.

"But instead of taking necessary precautions, they did the opposite.

"Out of negligence, mismanagement, and, at times, a desire to cut costs, they configured the ship's electrical and mechanical systems in a way that prevented those systems from being able to quickly restore propulsion and steering after a power outage," Mizer said.

"As a result, when the Dali lost power, a cascading set of failures led to disaster."

The Justice Department suit comes after Grace Ocean and Synergy Marine filed a legal action of their own earlier this year seeking to limit their liability to $44 million.

The Justice Department lawsuit does not seek damages for the eventual costs of rebuilding the bridge. That is expected to be the subject of a separate claim from the state of Maryland.

The families of the six road workers who lost their lives are also pursuing legal claims of their own.

The Fort McHenry channel leading to the port of Baltimore, a key hub for the auto industry, reopened to commercial navigation on June 10.
