On July 18, he travelled to a location in Marion County to do the act with the child when he was nabbed. It was revealed that, including Patel, 33 men had “actually travelled to have sex with minors” and were arrested.
“Many of these (arrested) men arranged to meet with what they thought was a child between the ages of 13-15 years old. Some of them even travelled from outside of Florida to arrange meeting places. Deputies and detectives seized guns, drugs, cash, and vehicles from these offenders, and more arrests are expected as detectives follow up with various cases," the MCSO said in a statement.

A state of emergency was declared by California Governor Gavin Newsom in response to the widespread bird flu in the dairy cattle.

The declaration comes as California has become the outbreak's epicentre. In the last 30 days, California has tested positive more than 300 dairy herds.&nbsp;

"This proclamation is a targeted action to ensure government agencies have the resources and flexibility they need," said Newsom, in the statement.

"While the risk to the public remains low, we will continue to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of this virus," he added.

The patient was a resident of Louisiana and was hospitalised in critical condition after getting infected most probably by a backyard flock.

The symptoms showed increased risks from the virus which had earlier caused conjunctivitis or eye redness in farm workers, who had got infected by the bird flu.&nbsp;

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said that the general public is at less risk of getting infected by H5N1 bird flu.

Since April, the CDC confirmed 61 human cases, most of which were workers working on dairy farms which had cattle infected by the virus. The workers who culled the infected poultry also tested positive.

The Louisiana patient has been in critical condition and is suffering from severe respiratory illness, said the Louisiana Department of Health, in a statement.&nbsp;

Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security's senior scholar Amesh Adalja said, "The mild cases that we’ve seen in the United States largely reflect that many of the individuals are getting infected by dairy cows and that’s very different than getting infected with infected birds."

“If you look at the genotype of this patient in Louisiana, it wasn’t the cattle strain. It was a wild bird strain," he added.

Since March, 860 dairy herds in 16 states have been infected by the bird flu and 123 million poultry have been killed. The outbreak started in 2022.

Washington DC, United States
The United States' outgoing Biden administration relaxed H-1B visas' rules which will ease the process of hiring foreign workers for companies and will ensure a smoother transition of people from F-1 student visas to H-1B visas.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the rules which are aimed at providing more flexibility to employers and workers by changing the definition for special positions and exempting governmental research organisations from the annual statutory limit on H-1B visas.
As per the official release, the change will help US employers hire according to their needs of business and remain competitive on a global scale.
The new rules will come into effect on January 17, 2025.
Speaking about the new rules, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas said, “American businesses rely on the H-1B visa programme for the recruitment of highly-skilled talent, benefiting communities across the country."

“These improvements to the programme provide employers with greater flexibility to hire global talent, boost our economic competitiveness, and allow highly skilled workers to continue to advance American innovation,” he added.
Meanwhile, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director said, “The H-1B programme was created by Congress in 1990, and there's no question it needed to be modernised to support our nation's growing economy."

The new rule has made it flexible for F-1 visa students to transition to H-1B status. The USCIS will now be able to expedite the application processing of individuals who have received approval for H-1B visa.
The rule is also applicable for beneficiaries who have an interest in petitioning an organisation and permits them to qualify for an H-1B visa under some conditions.
The USCIS has been granted more authority to impose penalties and conduct inspections in case of non-compliance.

Donald Trump does not have presidential immunity in the hush money case involving former porn performer Stormy Daniels, a US judge has ruled.

Trump was convicted in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records, related to payments of $130,000 made to porn star Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about an alleged affair during his 2016 election campaign. Trump has repeatedly denied any affair.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Judge Juan Merchan ruled on Monday (Dec 16)&nbsp;that the US president-elect's conviction in the hush money case should not be dismissed on account of the Supreme Court's presidential immunity ruling.

Squashing Trump's bid to have the conviction thrown out, the judge said the&nbsp;Supreme Court decision granting presidents sweeping immunity for official acts did not apply in this case as testimony at the trial related "entirely to unofficial conduct" and thus "entitled" the Republican "to no immunity protections."

<h2>Historic decision</h2>

Judge Juan Merchan's decision is nothing short of historic as it raises the prospect that Donald Trump could become the first US President to enter the White House with a felony conviction to his name, pending appeal against the jury's verdict.

Even as Trump's legal team contended that the Supreme Court's landmark July ruling on presidential immunity applies here, prosecutors, according to US media reports, argued that their bid to have the case thrown out was "well beyond" what was needed to protect the presidency.

On December 3, shortly after President Joe Biden pardoned his son&nbsp;Hunter Biden saying he was "selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted" by the Department of Justice (DOJ) "only because he is my son," the Trump team in a 69-page filing drew comparisons between their case and Biden's reasoning.&nbsp;

They claimed that the DOJ similarly targeted Trump with politically motivated investigations. A Chinese was arrested and charged with flying a drone over Vandenberg Space Force Base in California where he allegedly captured pictures of the military facility, said the US Justice Department on Wednesday (Dec 11).

Authorities detained Yinpiao Zhou, 39, at San Francisco International Airport as he attempted to depart for China.

“This defendant allegedly flew a drone over a military base and took photos of the base’s layout, which is against the law,” United States Attorney Martin Estrada said.

“The security of our nation is of paramount importance and my office will continue to promote the safety of our nation's military personnel and facilities.”

Charging documents reveal that Vandenberg's security systems tracked a drone flying roughly 1.6 kilometres (one mile) above the facility.

A drone detected by security personnel at Vandenberg Base, which is a launch site for SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets and missile tests, led security personnel to a nearby park, where they found Zhou with the device hidden in his jacket.

Agents who received a search warrant upon reviewing the drone found out that it had aerial photographs of the base.

Zhou is a Chinese national who, as per the Justice Department, is a lawful permanent resident of the United States, and had visited China recently in the month of February.

Zhou made a court appearance in San Francisco on Tuesday, facing charges of failing to register an aircraft not providing transport and violating national defence airspace. Notably, he did not enter a plea during his court appearance.&nbsp;

He is due to appear in US District Court in Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

In the year 2023, the United States found and traced an alleged spy balloon as it was spotted hovering above the US military installations. The authorities had shot it down and retrieved its large payload of electronics.

The outgoing US President Joe Biden's administration has called on the Islamist rebel group, that helmed the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, to refrain from assuming automatic leadership of Syria, as per two US officials and a congressional aide that was briefed on the first contacts with the group.

The United States is engaging in communications with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a Sunni Islamist organisation formerly aligned with al-Qaeda, in coordination with its Middle East allies, notably Turkey. HTS, designated as a terrorist organisation by the US, operates primarily in Syria's Idlib Governorate.

The administration is coordinating with President-elect Donald Trump's team about the matter, said one of the officials.

These discussions are part of a broader effort to navigate the complex aftermath of President Bashar al-Assad's ouster.

A US official, requesting anonymity, revealed that the government has been communicating with the Syrian rebel group, providing guidance on establishing a formal governing structure for the war-torn country.

The United States wants the transitional government to reflect the will of the people of Syria rather than being controlled by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) without a formal leadership selection process.&nbsp;

Biden administration urges Syrian rebels to support inclusive government

Biden hails fall of Assad's regime in Syria, but has this warning for rebels with terror record

In the wake of rebel factions taking over control of Syria, the US conducted airstrikes over the Islamic State terror camps in Syria, said the US Central Command (CENTCOM).

The operation included “dozens of precision airstrikes” and more than 75 targets were hit using Air Force assets like B-52s, F-15s and A-10s in central Syria, CENTCOM said in a statement.

“The strikes against the ISIS leaders, operatives, and camps were conducted as part of the ongoing mission to disrupt, degrade and defeat ISIS, in order to prevent the terrorist group from conducting external operations and to ensure that ISIS does not seek to take advantage of the current situation to reconstitute in central Syria.”

US conducts airstrikes on ISIS camps in Syria as Biden calls end of Assad regime an 'act of justice'

United States President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday (December 8), in an interview with NBC News, said that he will go ahead with his deportation plans for all illegal immigrants after he enters the Oval Office and if the immigrants are part of a family, then the entire family will be deported.

However, he also assured that he would make it easier for people from other countries to come to the United States, a step which can benefit Indians who enter the US legally.

Speaking about his plans of deporting everyone who is living illegally in the United States, Trump said, “I think you have to do it. You have to have, rules, regulations, laws. We are going to make it very easy for people to come in terms of they have to pass the test. They have to be able to tell you what the Statue of Liberty is. According to a Reuters report, the Republican&nbsp;team is silently developing a plan to bring Russia and Ukraine to the negotiation table. The report said Trump's administration will learn from Russia by saying it will increase weapon supplies to Ukraine if Russia does not come to the table to discuss a ceasefire. On the other hand, the US would threaten Ukraine to halt all the weapon supplies. The US is also likely to offer NATO membership to Ukraine. However, Zelensky recently said in an interview with Sky News that if the US would take regions that are under Kyiv's control for NATO, then only he would think about the ceasefire talks.&nbsp;

A US State Department spokesperson in Washington said that Bangladesh must secure "appropriate" legal representation for all detainees, aligning with fundamental human rights principles.

This comes after the bail hearing of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari&nbsp;on Tuesday (Dec 4), was adjourned by a month in a Chittagong court as he did not have a counsel.

Principal deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said that his view aligns with the United States' expectations for all governments.

"There needs to be respect for fundamental freedoms, respect for religious freedom and basic human rights," he said.

Vedant Patel emphasised that protests should always be peaceful, and during any government crackdown, it's essential that authorities respect the rule of law and protect basic human rights.

“And that’s something we will continue to emphasise.”

Meanwhile, Bangladesh's interim government's chief adviser Muhammad Yunus extended an invitation to Indian journalists to probe the accusations of persecution against Hindus and report their findings accurately.

“We are working to explain this to the Indian government and counter the misinformation,” he said.

The chief adviser further said that the concern raised by the Indian government regarding the safety of Hindus is not fact-based.

This comes after a lawyer of detained Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu was brutally attacked in Bangladesh, a spokesperson for the Hindu spiritual organisation International Society for Krishna Consciousness, known as ISKCON, said Monday (Dec 2).

Chinmoy was detained by Bangladesh police on November 25 on stringent sedition charges, backed by claims that he disrespected the Bangladeshi flag while demanding safety for Hindus. An FIR was also filed against him and 18 others. He was denied bail on November 26 and sent to prison. The court is now set to hear the case on January 2 next year.&nbsp;

Indian political leaders have been raising concerns over the arrest of the Hindu monk and rising attacks on the Hindu community in the country.

Over the weekend, ISKCON claimed Bangladesh detained two more Hindu monks who had gone to meet Chinmoy in jail.

While ISKCON earlier said Chinmoy was not its representative in Bangladesh, the group later said in a statement it “supports his rights and freedom for peacefully calling for protecting Hindus and their places of worship”.

A US State Department spokesperson in Washington said that Bangladesh must secure "appropriate" legal representation for all detainees, aligning with fundamental human rights principles.

A US State Department spokesperson in Washington said that Bangladesh must secure "appropriate" legal representation for all detainees, aligning with fundamental human rights principles. This comes after the bail hearing of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari on Tuesday (Dec 4), was adjourned by a month in a Chittagong court as he did not have a counsel. “And that’s something we will continue to emphasise.” Meanwhile, Bangladesh's interim government's chief adviser Muhammad Yunus extended an invitation to Indian journalists to probe the accusations of persecution against Hindus and report their findings accurately. “We are working to explain this to the Indian government and counter the misinformation,” he said. The chief adviser further said that the concern raised by the Indian government regarding the safety of Hindus is not fact-based. The United States sanctioned 35 companies and ships Tuesday it accused of being involved in Iran's so-called "shadow fleet" illicitly selling Iranian oil to foreign markets in violation of existing designations.

The sanctions, which include firms based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Panama, and Hong Kong, build on previous sanctions against Iran's oil industry, some of which came in response to Tehran's attacks against Israel earlier this year.&nbsp;

Iran' illicit oil sales help fund its nuclear, ballistic missile and drone programs, along with regional proxies, "risking further destabilizing the region," Treasury under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence Bradley Smith said in a statement announcing the sanctions.&nbsp;

Billionaire, Democratic Party mega-donor and co-founder of LinkedIn Reid Hoffman has been reportedly unhappy about the victory of President-elect Donald Trump and has been planning to leave the country.

Hoffman openly supported the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris. He informed his friends about considering relocating overseas because he is fearful about how Trump will use power in the White House against his political enemies, as reported by the New York Times.

In July, after Trump faced their first failed assassination attempt, Hoffman felt he was in hot water because of his previous comments in which he had expressed his wish for the Republican leader to be an “actual martyr.”

Donald Trump warns Hamas to release hostages or face consequences; 'HELL TO PAY'

Years after the Covid pandemic devastated the world, a US enquiry has concluded that the coronavirus likely leaked from a Chinese laboratory.

The two-year-long investigation into the outbreak that killed 1.1 million Americans by the Republican-led House Select Subcommittee on the Pandemic made the conclusion on Monday (Dec 2). It backs the theory that the Covid-19 virus likely originated from a laboratory accident in Wuhan, China, where it first emerged.&nbsp;

<h2>What the US Covid probe report says</h2>

The 520-page report reviewed the federal and state-level responses, the virus' origins, and vaccination efforts.

In a letter to the US Congress, panel chairperson Brad Wenstrup said: "This work will help the United States, and the world, predict the next pandemic, prepare for the next pandemic, protect ourselves from the next pandemic, and hopefully prevent the next pandemic."

The report supports the lab leak hypothesis, which posits that SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind Covid-19, escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

According to AFP news agency, the panel reached its conclusion after 25 meetings, over 30 interviews, and a review of more than one million documents. &nbsp;
&nbsp;&nbsp;
The investigation included testimony from Dr Anthony Fauci, the Former Chief Medical Advisor to the President of the United States. Republicans blame the 83-year-old immunologist for the pandemic and allege that he funded Chinese scientists who engineered the virus. Fauci, however, denies allegations of a cover-up. Appearing before the panel in June, he asserted that it was "molecularly impossible" for the bat viruses studied in Wuhan to be engineered into SARS-CoV-2.

Despite that, the panel's report said SARS-CoV-2 "likely emerged because of a laboratory or research-related accident."
&nbsp; &nbsp;
The report accused the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of funding "gain-of-function" research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This type of research enhances viruses to better understand potential threats.

<h2>Covid measures criticised</h2>

The subcommittee found that key public health measures like lockdowns caused "more harm than good."&nbsp;

It said that mask mandates were "ineffective at controlling the spread" of COVID-19, and even slammed social distancing guidelines. These conclusions contradict other studies that show such measures helped curb virus transmission. &nbsp;

The Republican report also said Operation Warp Speed, the Trump-era initiative to fast-track vaccine development, was a "tremendous success."&nbsp;

Indian Consulate seeks action after Telangana student shot dead in Chicago

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said in the United States on Saturday that we have to "fight together to prevent war", as he kicked off a week-long tour of the Pacific that has sparked fiery rhetoric from Beijing.

Taiwan faces the constant threat of a military attack by China, which it considers part of its territory and regularly deploys fighter jets and warships around the self-ruled island to press its claims.

Washington is Taipei's most important partner and biggest provider of weapons, but maintains a "strategic ambiguity" when it comes to putting boots on the ground to defend the island from China.

Speaking at a dinner in the US island state of Hawaii on Saturday, Lai said there were "no winners" from conflict and "we have to fight, fight together to prevent war."

Lai earlier received a standing ovation as he walked down a red carpet for the gathering with US government officials, state politicians, members of Congress, and Taiwanese expatriates.

He said the US flag and Hawaii state flag given to him as a gift "symbolise the longstanding friendship between Taiwan and the United States and lays the foundation for further cooperation in the future."

The chairperson of the American Institute in Taiwan, the body that serves as the de facto US embassy, said the partnership between Washington and Taipei was "rock solid".

"The opportunity for you to engage with thought leaders, the diaspora's community and state and local leaders is invaluable, and I know will contribute to further strengthening the rock solid US-Taiwan partnership," Laura Rosenberger said in a pre-recorded video played at the dinner.&nbsp;

Like most countries, Washington does not recognize Taiwan diplomatically but maintains close unofficial ties.

Beijing opposes any international recognition of Taiwan and its claim to be a sovereign state and especially bristles at official contact between the island and the United States.

In a statement, China's foreign ministry said it "strongly condemns" the United States for Lai's stopover and that it had "lodged serious protests with the US".

"China will closely follow the developments and take resolute and strong measures to defend our nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity," it said.

Lai, who is travelling abroad for the first time since taking office in May, was welcomed with red carpets, flower garlands and "alohas" as he began the two-day stopover in Hawaii.

Looking relaxed in a Hawaiian shirt, Lai flitted around, visiting a Pacific island history museum, an emergency management centre and the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbour.

On his arrival, he was given the "red carpet treatment" on the tarmac of Honolulu's international airport, according to his office, which said it was the first time a Taiwanese president had been given such a welcome.

He was met by Ingrid Larson, managing director in Washington of the AIT, Hawaii Governor Josh Green, and others.

Taiwanese government officials have previously stopped over on US soil during visits to the Pacific or Latin America, angering China, which has sometimes responded with military drills around the island.

<h2>'We are all Team Taiwan'</h2>

After Hawaii, Lai will visit Taiwan's allies the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and Palau -- the only Pacific island nations among the 12 countries that recognize Taiwan's claim to statehood -- and stop over for one night in the US territory of Guam.

Lai said shortly before take-off in Taipei that the trip "ushered in a new era of values-based democracy" and thanked the US government for "helping to make this trip a smooth one".&nbsp;

He said he wanted to "continue to expand cooperation and deepen partnerships with our allies based on the values of democracy, peace and prosperity."

"I once again emphasize that we are all Team Taiwan. We all work together, and we can successfully achieve our goals," Lai told reporters on board the plane.

An AFP journalist is travelling with the president for the duration of the trip.

In a swift response to news of Lai's trip on Thursday, Wu Qian, a spokesperson for China's defense ministry said: "We firmly oppose official interaction with China's Taiwan region in any form" and vowed to "resolutely crush" any attempts for Taiwan independence.

Lai's trip follows the US approval on Friday of a proposed sale to Taiwan of spare parts for F-16s and radar systems, as well as communications equipment, in deals valued at $385 million in total.

The Taiwan president's trip comes as Republican US President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office in January.&nbsp;

During his campaign, Trump caused jitters by suggesting Taiwan should pay the United States for its defence.

We have to 'fight together to prevent war', Taiwan's Lai says in US

The United States has approved the proposed sale of spare parts for fighter jets and radar systems as well as communications equipment to&nbsp;Taiwan, in deals valued at $385 million, a US agency said Friday.

While Washington does not have official diplomatic relations with Taipei, it remains the island's most important backer and biggest arms supplier.

The proposed sale of the F-16 and radar system parts consists of equipment in existing US military stocks and was worth an estimated $320 million, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement, with deliveries estimated to start in 2025.

"This proposed sale serves US national, economic and security interests by supporting the recipient's continuing efforts to modernize its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability," the DSCA said.

"The proposed sale will improve the recipient's ability to meet current and future threats by maintaining the operational readiness of the recipient's fleet of F-16 aircraft."

A separate sale involving follow-on support and equipment for a tactical communications system was worth $65 million, the DSCA said.

The deals were approved by the State Department, with the DSCA providing the required notification to Congress on Friday.

China insists self-ruled&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;is part of its territory and has long opposed US arms sales to the island.

The sales were announced as&nbsp;Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te was due to leave on Saturday for a trip to three Pacific island allies, with stopovers in Hawaii and the US territory of Guam.

Taiwan's defence ministry on Saturday "expressed gratitude" for the latest arms sales.

The items "will help maintain the combat readiness of the Air Force's F-16 aircraft equipment and bolster our air defense," the ministry&nbsp;said in a statement.

"Taiwan&nbsp;and the United States will continue to consolidate our security partnership."

The foreign ministry said it was the 18th time that President Joe Biden's administration had announced arms sales to the island.

Taiwan&nbsp;was determined to strengthen its defences in the face of China's military pressure and "grey zone harassment," it said in a statement, referring to tactics that fall short of an act of war.

China has ramped up military pressure on&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;in recent years with near-daily deployments of fighter jets and warships around the island.&nbsp;

On Saturday,&nbsp;Taiwan's defence ministry said 18 Chinese military aircraft and seven naval vessels as well as two balloons were detected in the 24 hours to 6:00 am (2200 GMT Friday).

US approves sales of arms worth $385 million to Taiwan: Agency

An Indian-origin neurosurgeon in Texas was fined over $2 million for Medicare fraud. The man named Dr Rajesh Bindal&nbsp;falsely claimed that he has performed invasive surgeries when in reality he has never done one. His so-called surgeries involved non-invasive procedures using electro-acupuncture devices.

While announcing the fine on Bindal, US Attorney Alamdar S Hamdani said in a press release that neurosurgeons are among the highest-paid medical specialists in the United States and Bindal's false claims were intended to enrich himself.&nbsp;

Bindal allegedly billed Medicare and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Programme (FEHBP) for surgical implantation of neurostimulator electrodes between March 16, 2021, and April 22, 2022.

These invasive surgeries are reimbursed by Medicare and FEHBP with thousands of dollars per procedure.&nbsp;

But according to the allegations imposed on Bindal, neither he nor any of his staff members performed these surgeries.&nbsp;

Patients were allegedly provided electro-acupuncture devices, which involved inserting monofilament wires a few millimetres into the ear and securing them with adhesive tape.

These procedures used to take place at the clinic of Bindal and not in a hospital or surgery room.&nbsp;

In some cases, these procedures were conducted by device sales representatives or physician's assistants who&nbsp;used to take care of the placement of devices. Patients alleged that the devices fell off over days because of weak adhesive.&nbsp;

“A neurosurgeon, like Bindal, should know when he is and is not performing surgery,” Hamdani said in the press release.&nbsp;
