Climate change-related heatwaves and wildfires are predicted to be more frequent and intense, which will impair air quality and harm ecosystems and human health, the UN warned on Wednesday (September 7).

As per a recent report by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), the interaction between pollution and climate change will affect millions of people. The information also called for immediate action to limit the damage.

WMO director Petteri Taalas said, "As the globe warms, wildfires and associated air pollution are expected to increase, even under a low emissions scenario." He added, "In addition to human health impacts, this will also affect ecosystems as air pollutants settle from the atmosphere to the Earth's surface."

Taalas warned, pointing out that with extreme heatwaves in Europe and China, along with steady high atmospheric conditions and sunlight, this is a foretaste of the future, AFP reported. He predicted that heat waves would become more frequent, intense, and prolonged and could result in poor air quality.

According to a senior WMO scientific officer, if emission levels stay high, the climate penalty is anticipated to be responsible for a fifth of all surface ozone concentration increases. He further cautioned that the majority of it would be in Asia.

The report pointed toward the link between air quality and climate, as the chemicals that affect air quality are released simultaneously as greenhouse gases.

The WMO emphasised in its plea for action that a global carbon neutrality emissions scenario would prevent future instances of high ozone air pollution.

State media KCNA said on Friday that the foreign ministry of North Korea criticised a new UN human rights expert as "biased" and that the nation would not accept what it dubbed US-led efforts to destroy the isolated dictatorship.

Elizabeth Salmon, the newly appointed U.N. specialist on North Korea's human rights, is in South Korea for the first time since taking office last month. Salmon stated in her inauguration speech that after more than two years of stringent measures to stop COVID-19, the North's human rights situation has gotten worse.

According to an unnamed ministry of foreign affairs source quoted by KCNA, "We had already made clear our principled stand that we neither recognise nor deal with any 'special rapporteur' who is merely a puppet of the US."

The North Korean government has consistently denied allegations of human rights violations and criticised UN probes into the topic as an attempt by the United States to meddle in its domestic affairs.

Uighur rights abuse: Potential ‘crimes against humanity’ in China’s Xinjiang, reads UN report

In a report released on Wednesday, the departing UN human rights chief claimed that severe human rights abuses had occurred in China's Xinjiang region as a result of the implementation of anti-terrorism and "anti-extremism" policies by the government.

After receiving criticism for being too lenient towards China during a visit in May, United Nations High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet, whose four-year term is coming to an end this week, opted not to run for re-election.

More than a million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities are allegedly being detained by Beijing in western Xinjiang. Campaigners charge China with a long list of human rights violations, including mass detention, forced labour, forced sterilisation, and the destruction of Uyghur religious and cultural sites.

"Allegations of patterns of torture or ill-treatment, including forced medical treatment and adverse conditions of detention, are credible, as are allegations of individual incidents of sexual and gender-based violence," the report said.

"The extent of arbitrary and discriminatory detention of members of Uyghur and other predominantly Muslim groups, pursuant to law and policy, in context of restrictions and deprivation more generally of fundamental rights enjoyed individually and collectively, may constitute international crimes, in particular crimes against humanity," it added.

Congressmen in Western nations and the United States have even accused China of conducting "genocide" against minority communities. Beijing firmly denies the allegations and has long maintained that it operates centres for vocational training in Xinjiang that are intended to combat extremism. It asserts that the accusations are a part of a plan by the US and other Western countries to malign China and check its rise.

As the allegations grew, Bachelet was under growing pressure to look into them and respond. The former president of Chile addressed the UN Human Rights Council about a year ago and said that her administration was finishing a report and called for an impartial assessment of the situation. But despite the growing impatience of rights organisations and some countries, it was repeatedly delayed.

Bachelet visited Xinjiang during her brief, six-day trip to China in May and she asked Beijing to refrain from "arbitrary and indiscriminate" actions in the area.

Rights organisations, however, criticised her for what they saw as a lack of toughness. They said that she had given in to a stage-managed visit to Xinjiang that Beijing had planned. The report, according to Human Rights Watch, will demonstrate that no state is above the law.

As momentum grows for the revival of a 2015 nuclear deal, Iran's top diplomat on Thursday demanded that the UN nuclear watchdog abandon the matter of three undeclared sites.

The International Atomic Energy Agency needs Tehran's cooperation to dispel doubts about past activities at three unreported locations, and the United States is insistent about this.

The board of governors of the IAEA adopted a resolution denouncing Iran in June for failing to effectively respond to the earlier finding of traces of enriched uranium at three locations that Tehran had not acknowledged as having hosted nuclear operations.

"We are very serious about safeguard issues, and do not want to allow some of the IAEA's baseless accusations to remain," Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said, state news agency IRNA reported.

According to an Iranian diplomat reported by IRNA, the incident is "political in character, and should not be used as a pretext to punish Iran," poisoning relations between the IAEA and the Islamic Republic.

The remarks follow an American response to Iranian suggestions for restoring the historic accord that former president Donald Trump had criticised.

"We are in the process of examining the response of the Americans," Amir-Abdollahian said.

Just a few weeks after it appeared that the agreement was dead, the European Union put forth on August 8 what it called a final text to revive it. Under this text, Iran would receive relief from sanctions and be allowed to sell its oil once more in exchange for strict limitations on its nuclear programme.

The United States officially responded to Iran's last week's suggested modifications on Wednesday, a day after Tehran accused its longtime foe of obstruction.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday (August 20) inspected a grain ship anchored off Turkish coast. A boat took the secretary general from Istanbul to the grain ship. The ship was chartered by the United Nations to transport Ukrainian grain on the southern shores of Istanbul.

Ukraine, a leading producer of foodgrains has been under attack from Russia since February 24 this year. The invasion created obstacles in the path of grain export from Ukraine raising the spectre of global food crisis. But a deal was brokered by the UN and Turkey between Ukraine and Russia that resulted in agreement for safe passage for grain ships from and to Ukraine.

The agreement also guarantees Russia a right to sell fertilisers and agricultural products despite western sanctions. Guterres said that Russian fertilisers and agricultural products should be able to reach global markets 'unimpeded'. He warned of a global food crisis next year should this not happen.

"It is important that all governments and the private sector cooperate to bring them to market," he said from the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC).

The JCC oversees the implementation of the Ukrainian grain export agreement signed in July by Kyiv and Moscow.

"What we see here in Istanbul and in Odessa is only the more visible part of the solution. The other part of this package deal is the unimpeded access to the global markets of Russian food and fertiliser, which are not subject to sanctions," Guterres said, adding that despite this, Russian fertiliser and agricultural exports still faced "obstacles."

"Without fertiliser in 2022, there may not be enough food in 2023. Getting more food and fertiliser out of Ukraine and Russia is crucial to further calm commodity markets and lower prices for consumers," he said.
