The United Nations nuclear watchdog said on Thursday that it has found no signs to support Russia’s accusations that Ukraine is looking to use a “dirty bomb” amid rising tensions. The International Atomic Energy Agency made the remarks after visiting most of the nuclear power plants in the country and concluded that there are no traces of materials that can be used in such a bomb.

The locations which were inspected were the Institute for Nuclear Research in Kyiv, Eastern Mining and Processing Plant in Zhovti Kody, and Production Association Pivdennyi Machine-Building Plant in Dnipro.

Earlier, Russia has repeatedly accused Ukraine of planning to use a bomb with nuclear materials in order to falsely implicate the Kremlin. "Over the past few days, the inspectors were able to carry out all activities that the IAEA had planned to conduct and were given unfettered access to the locations," IAEA said in a statement.

The United Nations-led coordination centre said on Tuesday that three ships have left Ukrainian ports as part of the grain export deal. The deal between Ukraine, Turkiye, and the UN was aimed at rectifying the current food shortages around the world due to the disruption to the supply chain due to the crisis.

The statement released by the UN stated that the Russian forces were informed about the movement of the ships and they will pass through the Black Sea and reach Turkey before the grain is further distributed.

Noting that more than 70 journalists were killed this year for "fulfilling their role in society", United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has stressed that a "free press" is vital for democracy, exposing wrongdoing and advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ahead of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists on November 2, Guterres called on the governments and international community to take necessary steps to protect journalists.

"A free press is vital to a functioning democracy, exposing wrongdoing, navigating our complex world and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals," he said.

"Yet, more than 70 journalists have been killed this year simply for fulfilling this role in society. Most of these crimes go unsolved. Meanwhile, a record number of journalists are incarcerated today, while threats of imprisonment, violence and death keep growing," the UN chief said in a message.

Marking the tenth anniversary of United Nations Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists, which aims to create a safe and free environment for all media workers, Guterres said, "I call on governments and the international community take the necessary steps to protect our journalists. We must end a common culture of impunity and enable journalists to do their essential work."

He observed that a surge in disinformation, online bullying and hate speech, particularly against women journalists, is contributing to the stifling of media workers around the world.

"On this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, let us honour our media workers, and stand up for truth, justice and human rights for all.

"Intimidation through the abuse of legal, financial and other means is undermining efforts to hold the powerful accountable. These trends threaten not only journalists, but society as a whole," Guterres said.

Free Press vital for a functioning democracy, exposing wrongdoings and advancing SDGs: UN chief

On Monday, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in the 10th edition of its monitoring report on the World of Work said that global employment growth will “deteriorate significantly” in the upcoming quarter of 2022. The report has attributed this fall to the economic turmoil caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine as well as the tighter monetary policy on consumption.

“On current trends, global employment growth will deteriorate significantly in the fourth quarter of 2022,” said the United Nations body, citing 40 million fewer full-time jobs between July-September this year when compared to the fourth quarter in 2019, the year prior to the pandemic being the benchmark level.

While early 2022 witnessed a recovery in the global hours worked was reserved in the second and third quarters which the report says is due to the reintroduction of Covid-related restrictions which have caused a disruption in the Chinese labour market. Additionally, deterioration is also due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine which has consequently led to inflation and adversely affected energy and food exports.

The ILO has also raised an alarm about the declining job vacancies and rise in unemployment in the upcoming months noting the sharp declines in vacancy growth as well as signs of the labour market cooling considerably in advanced economies. This also comes amid several major companies across the world announcing job cuts affecting thousands of people across the world.

According to the report, “the outlook for the labour market is currently highly uncertain, with growing downside risks, including the impacts of high inflation, tightening monetary policy, increasing debt burdens and declining consumer confidence.”

“We cannot insist enough on the need for social packages and the need to ensure that the monetary tightening to combat the inflation is really dovetailed with social measures,” said the ILO director-general Gilbert Houngbo during a press conference.

Houngbo has also called for a series of policies aimed at supporting those most affected, which reportedly includes redirecting some of the windfall corporate profits towards jobs or income support.

“Tackling this deeply worrying global employment situation, and preventing a significant labour market downturn, will require comprehensive, integrated and balanced policies both nationally and globally,” said the new director-general in a statement.

ILO: Global employment growth will ‘deteriorate significantly’ in Q4 of 2022

Martin Griffiths, the UN aid chief said on Monday that no ship involved in the Black Sea grain deal was transiting the maritime humanitarian corridor when Russia said its vessels were attacked. Rusia had said on the night of October 29 that its vessels in the Bay of Sevastopol in Crimea were attacked.

"No vessel reported an incident over the weekend," he added.

"The corridor is just lines on a chart: When Initiative vessels are not in the area, the corridor has no special status. It provides neither cover nor protection for offensive or defensive military action," Griffiths continued.

Ukraine is also called the world's 'bread-basket' because of its significant grain exports. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, dwindling grain exports from Ukraine had raised the spectre of a global food crisis, which could worsen the precarious situation of the global economy.

US aims to put UN's spotlight on human rights violations, repression in Iran next week

The United Nations said on Friday that it was "deeply concerned" by moves of Russian legislature to toughen up the notorious 'LGBTQ propaganda' law. The UN has urged Russian lawmakers to repeal the legislation.

On Thursday, the lower house of the Russian parliament (the Duma) voted to strengthen the law.

Rights campaigners say that new amendments in effect criminalise any public mention of same-sex couples.

The proposals "broaden a ban on any discussion and sharing of information about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and their human rights", UN Human Rights Office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva.

The new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, is "deeply concerned" by the move, "which infringes even further on international human rights norms and standards", she said.

UN human rights experts have condemned the existing law as "discriminatory, violating fundamental rights to freedom of expression and leading to an increase in hate speech, hate crimes and abuse, including against children", said Shamdasani.

"The legislative amendments worsen this situation by broadening the scope of the law to a blanket ban on all communications on the subject," she added.

Turk is appealing to legislators, who will consider the proposals in further two readings, to reject the amendments, she said.

Turk also notes that exclusion, stigmatisation and discrimination of any group within a society "is corrosive, is a root cause of violence, and has a negative impact on society as a whole", Shamdasani added.

Last year’s levels were the biggest year-on-year jump in methane concentrations since they began measurements four decades ago, said the report.

“The continuing rise in concentrations of the main heat-trapping gases, including the record acceleration in methane levels, shows that we are heading in the wrong direction,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas. While the reason for this unprecedented increase remains unclear, said the report, they believe it is a combination of both biological and human-induced processes.

Reportedly, the carbon dioxide levels also increased between 2020 and 2021 with a larger than the average annual growth rate seen over the past decade or so. The WMO also said how these levels are still increasing in 2022.

The report also highlights how the “radiative forcing”, the warming effect on our climate, by long-lived greenhouse gases that are still in the atmosphere has increased by at least 50% last year and is fuelled by an increase in the carbon dioxide levels.

According to WMO, the carbon dioxide concentrations last year reached 415.7 parts per million (ppm), methane 1908 ppm, and nitrous oxide 334.5 ppm, which is 149%, 262% and 124% respectively, higher than pre-industrial levels. “More bad news for the planet”, said the WMO in a statement released with its annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin.

Therefore, using the findings of this report, the WMO chief highlighted the importance of implementing “cost-effective strategies” to tackle methane emissions. However, he also said that while methane is more potent at trapping heat it stays in the atmosphere for less than 10 years and is largely reversible.

“As the most urgent priority, we have to slash carbon dioxide emissions, which are the main driver of climate change and associated extreme weather, and which will affect climate for thousands of years through polar ice loss, ocean warming and sea level rise,” said Taalas. The report elucidates that after the Covid-19 pandemic-induced lockdowns global carbon dioxide levels, rebounded primarily due to fossil fuel and cement production.

While some research shows the methane increase could be due to “biogenic sources”, such as wetlands and rice paddies, the report suggests. The other possibility explored was “climate feedback” which is when the rise in temperatures leads to faster decomposition in tropical wetlands consequently leading to an increase in emissions.

“The needed changes are economically affordable and technically possible. Time is running out,” said the WMO chief reiterating his calls for action on climate change. These findings also come ahead of the UN Climate Conference COP27 in Egypt which the researchers hope will be included during negotiations.

International climate pledges remain far off track to limit rising temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius, according to a report released by the United Nations on Wednesday, less than two weeks ahead of high-stakes negotiations to tackle global warming.

The combined climate pledges of more than 190 nations that signed up to the 2015 Paris climate deal put Earth on track to warm by around 2.5C compared to pre-industrial levels by the century's end.

With the planet already battered by climate-enhanced heatwaves, storms and floods after just 1.2C of warming, experts say the world is still failing to act with sufficient urgency to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

"We are still nowhere near the scale and pace of emission reductions required to put us on track toward a 1.5 degrees Celsius world," said Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change.

"To keep this goal alive, national governments need to strengthen their climate action plans now and implement them in the next eight years."

The UN's climate experts have said emissions -- compared to 2010 levels -- need to fall 45 per cent by 2030 in order to meet the Paris deal's more ambitious goal.

In its latest report, the UN said that current commitments from governments around the world will in fact increase emissions by 10.6 per cent by 2030.

In a new report, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) indicated that in the next 28 years climate change-induced heat waves will become an unavoidable hazard and are set to affect virtually every child on earth. Reportedly, today it affects at least half a billion young people.

The report titled, “The coldest year of the rest of their lives”, which was released on Tuesday, shows how by 2050 more than two billion children will be exposed to “more frequent, longer lasting, and more severe” heatwaves. It also underlines that young children face a greater risk when compared to adults in an extreme heat event.

According to UNICEF, at least 559 million children will witness at least four to five dangerous heat waves per year but this number is expected to reach more than two billion children by 2050 even if we manage to keep the temperature 1.7 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial levels. They have also attributed this to how a young person is less able to regulate their body temperature during such an event.

This inability also makes them more vulnerable to health issues including, chronic respiratory conditions, asthma, and cardiovascular diseases said the report. Furthermore, intense heat can lead to drought which would also hinder access to clean drinking water and lead to food insecurity and consequently stunt development in children and force families to migrate.

According to Vanessa Nakate, UNICEF’s goodwill ambassador, “The more frequent, longer lasting and more severe heat waves children are exposed to, the greater the impacts on health, safety, nutrition, education, access to water and future livelihoods.” The climate activist also noted how the children, “who are least responsible for climate change are bearing its biggest costs”.

Nakate added, “Unless world leaders at Cop27 take action to correct the course we are on, heatwaves will become even harsher than they are already destined to be.” This report also comes ahead of the UN Cop 27 which is set to take place on November 6.

“The climate crisis is a child rights crisis”, said Catherine Russell, executive director of UNICEF, giving the examples of wildfires and heat waves swept through India, Europe, and North America earlier this year she said that climate change is already taking a “devastating toll on children’s lives and futures.”

Therefore, the report has called on countries and governments from across the world for – protecting children from climate devastation by adapting social services; preparing children to live in a climate-changed world; prioritizing children and young people in climate finance and resources; preventing a climate catastrophe by drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and keep 1.5 degrees Celsius alive.

The United Nations human rights office has claimed that 23 children died during the crackdown against anti-hijab protests in Iran that was sparked by Mahasa Amini's death, reports Reuters news agency.

It said that the kids were killed by live ammunition, metal pellets at close range, and fatal beatings.

The UN office further said that Iran's police force has detained an unspecified number of children during school raids, while some have been sent for psychological treatment.

Though the human rights office didn't provide further details about the deceased, NGO Amnesty International claimed that the victims included 20 boys aged between 11 and 17, and three girls, of which two of them were 16-year-olds and one 17-year-old.

The month-long demonstration began after the death of 22-year-old Amini who was detained by the Iran's Morality Police for wearing headscarves inappropriately in violation of the Islamic dress code.

Since then, the protests have transformed into anti-regime agitation, calling for an end to the dictatorial regime.

On Monday, EU countries sanctioned Iran's information minister, several senior officers of Morality Police and other officials for the brutal crackdown on protesters.

In response, the Tehran regime vowed to take timely action, and blamed the West, especially US, of stoking tensions in the region.

Though no official figures are available, a toll published by the Iran Human Rights group has said that at least 122 people have been killed in the crackdown on the Amini protests, and at least 93 more died in separate clashes in Zahedan, Sistan-Baluchestan province.

23 kids killed during crackdown against Iran's anti-hijab protests: UN

The discovery of around 100 naked men at the Greek-Turkish border has been described as "very distressing" by the UN agency for refugees.

The two nations have laid blame for the fate of the 92 migrants on one another.

Greece assigned Turkiye the blame, calling its "behaviour" a "shame for civilization."

Turkey referred to the allegations made by its neighbour as "false news" and charged it with "cruelty."

The United Nations' refugee agency demanded a probe as both sides laid blame on each other and expressed their "deep sorrow" at the distressing stories and photographs.

Close to the country's northern border with Turkiye on Friday, 92 men—some of whom had injuries—were found naked. Greek police claimed to have saved all of them, as reported by the BBC.

They claimed that data from their investigation, along with that of Frontex inspectors from the EU border agency, showed that the migrants entered Greek territory from Turkiye on rubber dinghies.

"Border policemen... discovered 92 illegal migrants without clothes, some of whom had injuries on their bodies," the statement said.

According to Greek authorities, the men received first aid, clothing, and food immediately.

How and why the men lost their garments remained a mystery.

The guys, according to Frontex, were primarily from Syria and Afghanistan, and the organization's fundamental rights officer had been alerted to a possible rights breach.

Greek minister for civil protection, Takis Theodorikakos, accused Turkiye of "instrumentalising illegal immigration" in the latest in a row over migration between the neighbours.

In a speech to the UN last month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed that Greece had "oppressive policies" against immigrants and had turned the Aegean Sea into a "cemetery."

In 2015 and 2016, when around one million migrants arrived in Greece, mostly via Turkiye, fleeing conflict and poverty in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, Greece was at the centre of a major migration crisis in Europe.

Since then, there have been fewer arrivals, but according to Greek police, there have been more recent attempts to enter Greece across the Turkish land border and its islands.

A Ukrainian official has said that three Iran-made suicide drones operated by Russian forces targeted Makariv, west of Ukraine's capital Kyiv, early on Thursday. He also said that critical infrastructure facilities were struck in the attack.

"There was a overnight drones' bombardment by invaders on the Makariv community," Andriy Nebytov, head of the Kyiv region police said on the Telegram messaging app.

"According to preliminary information, there were no casualties."

Separately, Oleksiy Kuleba, the governor of the Kyiv region, said that Russian missiles pounded more than 40 Ukrainian cities and towns near Kyiv.

Kuleba stated on the Telegram messaging service that preliminary findings indicated that Iran-manufactured "loitering munitions" also called "kamikaze drones" were to blame for the attacks. These drones wait around the target until instructed, and then ran target detonating their explosive payload on impact.

Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the deputy head of Volodymyr Zelensky's presidential office, informed earlier on Thursday earlier that the attack took place by "kamikaze drones on critical infrastructure facilities", without providing further details.

The kamikaze drone attack comes after the UN General Assembly condemned Moscow’s annexation of four Ukrainian areas.

The UN General Assembly meets Monday hours after Russia launched a deadly barrage of missile strikes at cities across Ukraine, as Western powers condemned Moscow's latest attacks and sought to underscore its isolation.

The United Nations called the urgent meeting to discuss Russia's declared annexation of four partly occupied Ukrainian regions, but the debate was set to be overshadowed by the attacks on Kyiv and other cities in one of the most punishing assaults on Ukraine in months.

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed even more "severe" retaliation after the recent explosion that damaged a key bridge in Moscow-annexed Crimea -- an attack the Kremlin has blamed on Kyiv.

Ahead of the General Assembly session, and with tensions at a boiling point, UN chief Antonio Guterres described Russia's attacks as an "unacceptable escalation of the war," his spokesman said.

US President Joe Biden meanwhile condemned the strikes in stark terms, saying they "demonstrate the utter brutality" of Putin's "illegal war."

"The United States strongly condemns Russia's missile strikes today across Ukraine," he said in a statement.

'Illegal annexations'

With Putin's actions in the spotlight, UN debate will open on a draft resolution denouncing what has been widely seen in the West as Russia's illegal seizure of Ukrainian land.

The decision to bring the annexation matter before the General Assembly, where the 193 UN members have one vote each -- and no one wields veto power -- was taken after Russia used its veto in a Security Council meeting September 30 to block a similar proposal.

The vote is expected no sooner than Wednesday.

"It's extremely important," said Olof Skoog, who, as EU ambassador to the world body, drafted the text in cooperation with Ukraine and other countries.

The international community will be in "a very, very bad place," the Swedish diplomat told reporters, "unless the UN system and the international community through the General Assembly react to this kind of illegal attempt."

A failure by the General Assembly to act would give "carte blanche to other countries to do likewise or to give recognition to what Russia has done," he added.

A resolution draft seen by AFP condemns Russia's "attempted illegal annexations" of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson following "so-called referendums," and it stresses these actions have "no validity under international law."

It calls on all states, international organizations and agencies not to recognize the annexations, and demands the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.

In response to the resolution, Russia has written to all member states in a letter attacking "Western delegations" whose actions "have nothing to do with protection of international law and the principles of the UN Charter."

"They only pursue their own geopolitical objectives," said the letter, signed by Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia.

Nebenzia said that given the circumstances, the General Assembly should vote by secret ballot -- a highly unusual procedure normally reserved for matters like electing the rotating members of the Security Council.

'A bit of desperation'

"It doesn't suggest a high degree of confidence in the outcome if Russia is seeking to obscure the vote count," a senior official in US President Joe Biden's administration told reporters. "It does suggest a bit of desperation."

Guterres himself has bluntly denounced the annexations as being "against everything the international community is meant to stand for," he said.

"It has no place in the modern world. It must not be accepted."

During last month's Security Council vote, no other country sided with Russia, though four delegations -- China, India, Brazil and Gabon -- abstained.

Some developing countries have complained the West is devoting all its attention to Ukraine, and others might be tempted to join them this week.

The vote will provide a clear picture of exactly how isolated Russia has become. Given the high stakes, backers of the draft are going all out to win over potential abstentionists.

On Monday, Ukrainian diplomat Dmytro Kuleba issued a plea to African nations to get off the fence.

"Neutrality will only encourage Russia to continue its aggression and malign activities across the world, including in Africa," he said.

UN set to meet after Russia strikes in Ukraine

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres submitted a proposal to the Security Council urging them to send a rapid action force to Haiti which is suffering from a major cholera outbreak as well as rampant gang activities. According to the Associated Press, the RAF will assist Haiti’s National Police.

The proposal was drafted after the Haitian government urged the UN for “the immediate deployment of a specialized armed force, in sufficient quantity” in order to combat the ongoing crisis. On one hand, gang activity has gone up considerably and on the other, protests have erupted all around the county demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry for his “inability to control the situation”.

Guterres said on Monday that the force would “remove the threat posed by armed gangs and provide immediate protection to critical infrastructure and services” and secure the “free movement of water, fuel, food, and medical supplies from main ports and airports to communities and health care facilities.”

The cholera outbreak in the country has already claimed several lives with the hospitals completely filled with infected people. Fuel crises as well as food shortages have become quite common in recent months and doctors believe that the situation is getting worse due to the lack of proper water.

According to the latest data published by the UN, around 150 people have been affected till now, and added that “three-fourths of major hospitals across Haiti were unable to provide critical service". The report also said that patients have not experienced proper conditions in several hospitals.

United Nations' Libya mission on Sunday (October 9) condemned the "heinous killing" of 15 migrants near Meditarranean city of Sabratha. It accused smugglers and demanded justice.

Bodies of the migrants were found on a beach in the morning on Friday. Most of the migrants were burned inside a charred boat.

"While the exact circumstances remain to be determined, the killings reportedly resulted from clashes between rival traffickers," the UN mission UNSMIL said in a statement.

It urged authorities in the North African nation "to ensure a swift, independent and transparent investigation to bring all perpetrators to justice".

Libya was a key route for clandestine migration even before the 2011 uprising that overthrew dictator Moamer Kadhafi.

Lawlessness after the death of Kadhafi made the situation worse. The migration via sea from Libya is considered to be the world's deadliest migration route. The western city of Sabratha is just 300 kilometres from Lampdusa, the Italian island.

Migrants often face horrific treatment at the hands of smuggling gangs.

Rights groups have repeatedly accused authorities and armed groups operating under state auspices of torture and other abuses.

The latest killings are "a stark reminder of the lack of protection migrants and asylum seekers face in Libya, and the widespread human rights violations undertaken by powerful trafficking and criminal networks who need to be swiftly stopped and prosecuted," UNSMIL said.

UN denounces 'heinous killing' of migrants in Libya

Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly getting ready to chair his Security Council meet on Monday (October 10). The development will take place at a time when Russian forces have suffered military losses in Ukraine in the face of Ukrainian counteroffensive and part of the Kerch Bridge collapsed after a blast and fire.

As quoted by AFP, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov made an announcement about this.

"Tomorrow, the president has a planned meeting with the permanent members of the Security Council," Peskov said.

The Russian Security Council meeting has been convened after Putin ramped up security of the Kerch Bridge and appointed a new general for leading the operation in Ukraine after repeated setbacks.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 this year. After sustained gains in the first few months of the war, Russian forces have had to retreat. The Ukranian forces have been able to recapture thousands of square kilometres of territory, including some that Russia had declared would remain Russia's 'forever'.

Announcement about Putin chairing the meeting has been made just a day after an explosion rocked a key bridge connecting Russia and Russian-annexed Crimea. The explosion caused some portion of the Kerch Bridge to collapse.

Kerch bridge is an important bridge as it transports troops and military material to Crimea. This in turn helps Russian military operations in southern Ukraine.

The bridge has a symbolic value and it was inaugurated by President Vladimir Putin himself as he drove a truck across it.

The United Nations General Assembly will be holding an urgent meeting next Monday regarding Russia’s annexation of four regions of Ukraine following referendums which were considered to be “shams” by western countries. A UN spokesperson announced on Monday that the member nations will be discussing a resolution regarding the annexation and their possible responses.

Sources told Reuters that the resolution is currently under preparation after Russia vetoed a condemnation of the move in the Security Council. According to General Assembly spokesperson Paulina Kubiak, the meeting was called at the request of Albania and Ukraine on October 10.

The referendums held in the four Ukrainian regions – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia – caused a lot of controversy in Europe as it was completely dismissed by the United States and other European countries. On the other hand, Russia claimed victory thanks to “huge number of votes”.

The annexation plan has already been ratified by the lower house of parliament in Russia – the State Duma – and the official announcement was also made by President Vladimir Putin. While Russia was able to veto any action against it in the security council, no such power will exist in the UNGA.

With the Ukraine-Russia crisis not showing any signs of slowing down, several countries have already expressed their concern regarding the referendums. Another major point put forward by a number of UN members has been the lack of control Russia exercises on the four annexed regions.

If it is passed, this will become the fourth resolution against the Russian invasion since April.

UN General Assembly to hold emergency meeting on Russian 'annexation' in Ukraine

A roadside bomb killed three United Nations peacekeepers from Bangladesh and injured several others in northwest Central African Republic on Monday, the UN said.

The attack occurred near the village of Kaita, close to the border with Cameroon, in an area rife with militia activity.

"The battalion was carrying out a patrol... when one of its vehicles hit an explosive device," the peacekeeping mission MINUSCA said in a tweet late on Tuesday.

No militia was directly blamed for the attack, although MINUSCA head Valentine Rugwabiza condemned "the use of explosive devices by armed groups."

MINUSCA said it has launched an investigation into the explosion.

Central African Republic has been rocked by violence since 2013 when mainly Muslim Seleka rebels ousted then president Francois Bozize, prompting reprisals from mostly Christian militias.

The conflict has uprooted more than one million people, according to the UN.

Violence waned after a shaky peace accord was signed in February 2019 between the government and 14 armed groups, but the situation remains volatile as swathes of territory are still outside government control in one of the world's poorest countries.

UN peacekeepers were deployed to CAR in 2014. The mission currently counts just over 14,200 uniformed personnel and has suffered 147 fatalities, its website says.
