After repeated accusations over shelling, operations at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine have been halted and final unit has been disconnected from the grid. Meanwhile fighting near the plant have raised concerns of nuclear disaster.

Concerns over Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant; last working reactor shut down

The last operational reactor at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in southern Ukraine has been shut down amid fears of radiation disaster, the Ukraine government announced on Sunday.

The nuclear operator Energoatom said that the No6 reactor has been disconnected. It said they are preparing for the reactor to be cooled and transferred to a cold, safer state.

“Today, September 11, 2022, at night, at 03.41 am (0141 GMT), unit No. 6 of the ZNPP was disconnected from the power grid. Preparations are underway for its cooling and transfer to a cold state," it said in a statement.

The Zaporizhzhia plant, which was running on six reactors, was cut off from the electricity grid last and all its power lines were disconnected following intense shelling in the area, reports AFP.

It was running on only one reactor and that too in “island mode” for several days, essentially powering the rest of the plant's crucial cooling systems.

The state agency said the plant was restored to operational capacity, allowing the plant to be powered by Ukraine’s energy system long enough to initiate the shutdown.

It said that the nuclear plant’s shutdown was because the risk of further damage to the power lines “remains high”, which would disconnect the plant completely from the power grid again, in which case the plant would have to fire up emergency diesel generators to keep the reactors cool and prevent a nuclear meltdown.

The nuclear plant was occupied by the Russian forces in the early stages of the invasion. It is one of the 10 biggest atomic power stations in the world.

Russia and Ukraine traded blame for shelling around the plant that has caused significant damage to the power lines connecting it to the grid.

Hours after Russia's defence ministry announced on Saturday that the country was pulling back its troops from two areas in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed it to be a victory and talked down the Russians. Reportedly in a video post on Facebook, Zelensky gloated that the Russians were running scared ever since the Ukrainian soldiers gained access to a vital Russian supply hub. “These days, the Russian army is showing its best showing its back. And, in the end, it is a good choice for them to run away. There is and will be no place for the occupiers in Ukraine,” he said. The Ukrainian President further added that his troops had swept and liberated more than 2,000 square kilometres (770 square miles) of area since the month started. “The movement of our soldiers in different directions of the front continues. As of now, as part of active actions since the beginning of September, about 2,000 square kilometres (770 square miles) of our territory has already been liberated,” he said. × "I'm thankful to the troops of the 214th separate rifle battalion for securing the situation in Balakliya, who, together with units of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Special Operations Forces, special forces of the National Guard and the police, returned full control to the city. “I’m thankful to all our defenders, who during these weeks made the approach of our victory even more tangible!” Zelensky signed off as saying. As reported by WION, following the significant advances made by Ukrainian soldiers in Kharkiv, Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the troops would be regrouped from the Balakliya and Izyum areas. Since bursting through the frontline earlier this week, Ukrainian forces have recaptured dozens of towns and villages held by Russia for months. Kharkiv: After Kyiv severs supply line, Russian grip on northeast Ukraine collapses

A Chinese cyberespionage group named Bronze President, which also goes by the name Mustang Panda, has been using a malware named PlugX to target the computers of political leaders across the globe.

A Chinese cyberespionage group named Bronze President, which also goes by the name Mustang Panda, has been using a malware named PlugX to target the computers of political leaders across the globe. Secureworks Counter Threat Unit (CTU), a company that analyses threat data across the planet, observed a series of attacks in the month of July that used the LuhX malware. Government officials in Europe, West Asia, and South America were reportedly targeted. Read more: China launched cyberattack against Ukraine before Russian invasion: Report According to CTU, the footprint of the attack bore similarities to previous attacks by Bronze President. The Chinese espionage group imitated official diplomatic notices and lured the government officials. “Several characteristics of this campaign indicate that it was conducted by the likely Chinese government-sponsored Bronze President threat group, including the use of PlugX, file paths and naming schemes previously used by the threat group, the presence of shellcode in executable file headers, and politically themed decoy documents that align with regions where China has interests,” the CTU research team wrote in a statement. Explaining that the PlugX malware had capabilities beyond just information gathering, the CTU team further added. "PlugX is modular malware that contacts a command and control (C2) server for tasking and can download additional plugins to enhance its capability beyond basic information gathering," it said. It is pertinent to note that the malware usually arrived in the victim's computer, embedded within RAR archive files. Upon opening the file, the user is shown a Windows shortcut (LNK) file. Once the user clicks on the LNK file, the Plux malware is loaded, decrypted and executed in the system. The group stated that recently a Turkish official was targeted using a similar modus-operandi. The official received a notification letter, supposedly from the UK government, informing about the appointment of a new ambassador. However. the truth is there has been no change in the personnel. Opening the mail could have compromised the official. The cybersecurity firm advised that countries and organisations that China has an interest in could be at the most risk of being targeted and thus they needed to be aware of the group's activities. “Organisations in geographic regions of interest to China should closely monitor this group’s activities, especially organisations associated with or operating as government agencies,” read the statement. Top 10 world news: Liz Truss freezes energy bills, India-China begin disengagement, and more

The cost of living is ranked by most voters globally as a more important issue than liberating Ukraine from Russian occupation, but there is still strong support for a Russian military withdrawal, according to a survey showing global preoccupations.

The polling was conducted by Datapraxis and YouGov by the Open Society Foundations, a group funded by the businessman and philanthropist George Soros, and has been released ahead of the UN general assembly later this month in New York.

Majorities in 16 of the 22 largest countries believe Russia should leave the territory it has occupied in Ukraine, the survey shows. The polling in 22 countries of more than 21,000 citizens also underlines the extent to which the global south is less engaged with the war in Ukraine than Europeans.

Asked to list their top-three priority issues, voters more often cited the climate crisis and cost of living ahead of Ukraine. Even in the UK, the country with some of the most solid support for Ukraine, more voters cite climate change.

The climate emergency was the top priority, with 36% of respondents ranking it as one of the three most significant issues facing the world, compared with 28% who picked Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In all but three of the countries surveyed, fewer than 40% cited Ukraine as a top-three priority issue.

It will be examined closely by world leaders for signs of any fracture in support for the war in Ukraine in view of rising inflation and energy prices. Although the survey clearly shows Ukraine is globally viewed as less important than the climate crisis and the cost of living, Russia can take little solace from the poll.

For instance, there was also a strong plurality (49%) supporting the statement “war crimes are mostly being committed by Russia”, compared with 28% supporting the view that “war crimes are being committed by both sides”.

Also Read: In pics: What moving out of majestic white house looks like? It will be examined closely by world leaders for signs of any fracture in support for the war in Ukraine in view of rising inflation and energy prices. Although the survey clearly shows Ukraine is globally viewed as less important than the climate crisis and the cost of living, Russia can take little solace from the poll. For instance, there was also a strong plurality (49%) supporting the statement “war crimes are mostly being committed by Russia”, compared with 28% supporting the view that “war crimes are being committed by both sides”. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant has been at the center of a lot of discussion in the past few weeks due to the threat it poses amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. A number of world leaders have already expressed their concern regarding the possible radiation leak that can happen due to the constant shelling from both sides and on Tuesday, UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, joined the list.

During a UN security council session, Guterres called for a demilitarised zone around the power plant to ensure no accident can take place. It will mean withdrawal of the Russian troops from the premises of the plant and also an understanding with Ukraine that the resistance forces will not move forward.

Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has voiced his displeasure towards what he called the West's 'provocative' policies towards Russia. Erdogan's comment has come just when the European Union is thinking about a price cap on Russian gas.

Russia is a major supplier of natural gas to Europe and has been leveraging its position to exert political pressure on the continent in light of the Ukraine war. The EU has already imposed economic sanctions on Russia.

In order to cut Russia's revenue source, European countries are planning on a price cap on Russian gas.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reacted angrily and has threatened 'no oil, no gas' to any country that decides to put price cap on Russian energy products. He was speaking at Eastern Economic Forum in Russia's far-east city Vladivostok.

Putin has also threatened a relook at the Ukrainian grain export deal. He said that he would contact Turkish President Erdogan to discuss amendment to the deal to decide which countries can receive grain shipments.

As the war in Ukraine grinds on, the US-led West is discovering that defeating Russia was easier said than done. The West is now realising that: the war will drag on for longer than foreseen; the US and Europe cannot keep boosting President Volodymyr Zelensky’s regime with a steady flow of readily usable weapons; Russia, far from being beaten by sanctions, has reaped economic gains in the process; and, above all, weaponising resources is a game that both sides can play.

To take the last point first, OPEC+, which is meeting today to discuss an output cut to prop up oil prices, has proved that it is no pushover. Petroleum prices have acquired a new urgency in the wake of Russia’s decision last week to shut down the Nordstream gas pipeline to Germany. Moscow said that this is being done to carry out repairs although it is, doubtless, a move to hit back at the G7 bloc that wants to impose a price cap on Russian oil imports. Thus, the G7 may not succeed in reducing Russia’s oil revenues.

Instead, Russia escalating the face-off over gas and oil exports will worsen winter shortages in Europe, thereby forcing the Continent to import fuel at much higher prices and still ration it.

Europe has accused Russia of weaponising energy supplies. The accusation cannot but draw attention to the US and Europe weaponising not only foreign exchange reserves and assets of Russia and other countries such as Afghanistan but also subverting the international banking system SWIFT to serve their military objectives.

The other truths are brought home by none less than US President Joe Biden, who led the West into this proxy war against Russia in the name of Ukraine’s independence. Speaking on Ukraine’s Independence Day last week, Biden did not mention Zelensky or his military campaign against Russia. He held out no promise of any support to Ukraine’s war effort. The recently announced arms worth $2.98 billion were for Ukraine to “continue to defend itself over the long term”.

As Washington distances itself from Kyiv, support for Ukraine is also drying up in Europe, particularly in Germany, France and Italy. These countries, including a refugee-weary Poland, are no longer keen to send weapons to Ukraine or continue the war against Russia. The anti-war protests in Germany underscore the extent of public and intra-party pressure that Chancellor Olaf Scholz is facing.

Ukraine is losing support outside the West, too, with less than a third of the UN’s 193 members willing to back any resolution condemning Russia.

The tide of world opinion is turning against Ukraine and its US-led patrons.
