The cost of living is ranked by most voters globally as a more important issue than liberating Ukraine from Russian occupation, but there is still strong support for a Russian military withdrawal, according to a survey showing global preoccupations.

The polling was conducted by Datapraxis and YouGov by the Open Society Foundations, a group funded by the businessman and philanthropist George Soros, and has been released ahead of the UN general assembly later this month in New York.

Majorities in 16 of the 22 largest countries believe Russia should leave the territory it has occupied in Ukraine, the survey shows. The polling in 22 countries of more than 21,000 citizens also underlines the extent to which the global south is less engaged with the war in Ukraine than Europeans.

Asked to list their top-three priority issues, voters more often cited the climate crisis and cost of living ahead of Ukraine. Even in the UK, the country with some of the most solid support for Ukraine, more voters cite climate change.

The climate emergency was the top priority, with 36% of respondents ranking it as one of the three most significant issues facing the world, compared with 28% who picked Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In all but three of the countries surveyed, fewer than 40% cited Ukraine as a top-three priority issue.

The Russian military took over the plant in early March and although Ukraine has been trying to win it back, the occupying forces were able to defend it despite facing heavy shelling.&nbsp;

Putin has also threatened a relook at the Ukrainian grain export deal. He said that he would contact Turkish President Erdogan to discuss amendment to the deal to decide which countries can receive grain shipments.

Ukraine is a major producer of grains and stoppage of grain exports has been said to potentially cause a global food crisis.

Russia is a major supplier of natural gas to Europe and has been leveraging its position to exert political pressure on the continent in light of the Ukraine war. The EU has already imposed economic sanctions on Russia. In order to cut Russia's revenue source, European countries are planning on a price cap on Russian gas. Russian President Vladimir Putin has reacted angrily and has threatened 'no oil, no gas' to any country that decides to put price cap on Russian energy products. He was speaking at Eastern Economic Forum in Russia's far-east city Vladivostok. Putin has also threatened a relook at the Ukrainian grain export deal. He said that he would contact Turkish President Erdogan to discuss amendment to the deal to decide which countries can receive grain shipments. The West is now realising that: the war will drag on for longer than foreseen; the US and Europe cannot keep boosting President Volodymyr Zelensky’s regime with a steady flow of readily usable weapons; Russia, far from being beaten by sanctions, has reaped economic gains in the process; and, above all, weaponising resources is a game that both sides can play. &nbsp;

To take the last point first, OPEC+, which is meeting today to discuss an output cut to prop up oil prices, has proved that it is no pushover. Petroleum prices have acquired a new urgency in the wake of Russia’s decision last week to shut down the Nordstream gas pipeline to Germany. Moscow said that this is being done to carry out repairs although it is, doubtless, a move to hit back at the G7 bloc that wants to impose a price cap on Russian oil imports. Thus, the G7 may not succeed in reducing Russia’s oil revenues.&nbsp;

Instead, Russia escalating the face-off over gas and oil exports will worsen winter shortages in Europe, thereby forcing the Continent to import fuel at much higher prices and still ration it.&nbsp;

Europe has accused Russia of weaponising energy supplies. The accusation cannot but draw attention to the US and Europe weaponising not only foreign exchange reserves and assets of Russia and other countries such as Afghanistan but also subverting the international banking system SWIFT to serve their military objectives.&nbsp;

The other truths are brought home by none less than US President Joe Biden, who led the West into this proxy war against Russia in the name of Ukraine’s independence. Speaking on Ukraine’s Independence Day last week, Biden did not mention Zelensky or his military campaign against Russia. He held out no promise of any support to Ukraine’s war effort. The recently announced arms worth $2.98 billion were for Ukraine to “continue to defend itself over the long term”.&nbsp;

As Washington distances itself from Kyiv, support for Ukraine is also drying up in Europe, particularly in Germany, France and Italy. These countries, including a refugee-weary Poland, are no longer keen to send weapons to Ukraine or continue the war against Russia. The anti-war protests in Germany underscore the extent of public and intra-party pressure that Chancellor Olaf Scholz is facing.&nbsp;

Ukraine is losing support outside the West, too, with less than a third of the UN’s 193 members willing to back any resolution condemning Russia. &nbsp;

The tide of world opinion is turning against Ukraine and its US-led patrons.&nbsp;

“In the industrial district, a two-story building was damaged and a private residential building, in which a 73-year-old woman was staying, was destroyed. Unfortunately, she died,” he added in the post.&nbsp;

The incident took place in the village of Zolochiv which lies in the northern part of Kharkiv. &nbsp;

The mayor of the region - Ihor Terekhov – also took to Telegram to inform the country about a rocket attack which destroyed a number of buildings in the central part of the city.&nbsp;

“Three people have already been rescued from under the ruins of a residential building - two women and a man,” he wrote. He also said that the authorities issued an air raid alert all around Ukraine in fears of renewed shelling from the Russian side after a fuel depot in&nbsp;Dnipropetrovsk region was attacked.&nbsp;

While accusations continue from the Ukrainian side, Russian defense ministry maintained their stance that all attacks were aimed towards the military and they are not in favour of harming civilians.&nbsp;
