Russian FM calls Zelensky's peace formula 'figment of sick imagination'

As the year comes to an end, Russia is attacking Ukraine with renewed vigour. In the last 24 hours, Russia has fired a record number of missiles. At least six major Ukrainian cities have come under attack. Is this Russia's year-end offensive?

The Polish Army on Friday (Dec 29) claimed that a Russian missile passed through the country's airspace as Moscow launched its biggest aerial attack on Ukraine since the war began in February last year.

General Wieslaw Kukula, chief of the general staff of the Polish armed forces confirmed that the missile briefly entered the Polish airspace before getting redirected towards Ukraine.

"Everything indicates that a Russian missile entered Polish airspace. It also left our airspace. We have national and allied radar confirmation," Kukula told reporters.

Although the missile was in Polish airspace for only three minutes, it was sufficient for the army to raise its defence preparedness. According to armed forces spokesman Jacek Goryszewski, the jets were scrambled in the direction of the missile in response to the violation of the airspace.

"We sent our forces, fighter jets, to intercept it and shoot it down if necessary but the duration and the flight path... made this impossible and allowed the missile to leave Polish territory," said Maciej Klisz, the operational commander of the Polish army.

According to Klisz, the Polish air defence systems were put on alert soon after Russia launched a mega drone and missile onslaught on Ukraine, earlier in the day.

After the intrusion, Polish President Andrzej Duda dialled NATO chief Jen Stoltenberg and had a conversation over the incident.

Notably, in November 2022, a Ukrainian air defence missile fell in the Polish village of Przewodow near the border, killing two civilians.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's rumoured goddaughter Ksenia Sobchak was reportedly one of the attendees at the controversial star-studded "almost-naked" party which has now triggered severe backlash in the country.

A journalist, socialite, and onetime presidential candidate, Sobchak said she had realised that being a part of the "almost-naked" party was not the right thing to do.

The scandalous event in Moscow's famed Mutabor nightclub saw celebrities dressed in raunchy costumes.

Famous rapper Nikolai Vasilyev, also known as Vacio, attended the party wearing only a sock to hide his modesty.

He was later imprisoned for 15 days and fined for promoting "non-traditional sexual relations".

The other stars who wore flesh-coloured mesh, lace, and lingerie, faced cancelled concerts, lost TV appearances, and broken sponsorship deals.

The party was organised by famous Instagram influencer Anastasia Ivleeva and was attended by several celebs who have been staying in the country since Putin launched his offensive against Russia in Feb 2022.

Sobchak issues public apology

Sobchak, reacting to the controversy, issued a partial apology, while also seeking to defend the organiser of the party Ivleeva.

As per a Washington Post translation, she shared a post on her Telegram account a day after the backlash began, saying, "Where and when adults go with their butts naked is their personal business."

The post showcased the video of a woman wearing a sheer black dress.

A few days later, the footage of the party sparked public outrage after which Sobchak released another video saying that attending the party and sharing images online was not the right thing to do at a time when Russian troops were fighting in Ukraine.

"You always need to choose carefully the right time, and this is not the right time," she said.

“If anyone was offended by my appearance, I apologise for that,” she added. “I don’t want to cause hatred and anger toward myself and other artists because of this stupid accident.”

Sobchak is the daughter of Putin's former boss Anatoly Sobchak, the ex-mayor of St. Petersburg who passed away in 2000.

The controversial event has invited criticism from the authorities, pro-Kremlin lawmakers and bloggers, state media, and Orthodox Church groups.

It has also angered Russians who back Moscow's aggression against Ukraine.

US announces $250 million Ukraine aid, former releases final Kyiv aid tranche | WION Newspoint

The United States President Joe Biden’s administration, on Wednesday (Dec 27) announced another tranche of military aid for Ukraine worth around $250 million, amid its ongoing war with Russia. The latest package marked the last funding available for the war-torn country without fresh approval from Congress where the talks on a new agreement have stalled.

About the latest military aid package

The latest package included air defence munitions, anti-tank weapons, artillery ammunition, anti-armour munitions and over 15 million rounds of ammunition, said Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday.

Washington’s top diplomat, in a statement, said Congress, where Republicans are split on supporting Ukraine, should “act swiftly” to renew the flow.

He added, “Our assistance has been critical to supporting our Ukrainian partners as they defend their country and their freedom against Russia’s aggression.”

The weapons, worth up to $250 million are provided through the Presidential Drawdown Authority and will be pulled from Pentagon stockpiles. The drawdown is a US foreign policy tool, which allows speedy delivery of Department of Defense stocks to foreign countries in crisis and does not need Congressional approval.

In a statement, Marine Lieutenant Colonel Garron Garn, a Pentagon spokesperson said there is no more funding to replace the weapons taken from department stocks. Therefore, Garn added, “Without the supplemental funding, there will be a shortfall in replenishing U.S. military stocks, affecting American military readiness.”

Earlier this month, Biden signed a $200 million emergency aid drawdown for Kyiv amid Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Washington. This is after Zelensky failed to sway US lawmakers as criticism of continued financial support for Ukraine has grown louder on Capitol Hill in recent months, particularly from the Republicans.

However, the US president has made backing Ukraine a priority as Western aid has been crucial in helping the war-torn country against a far larger attacking Russian army.

Biden’s $106 billion aid package proposal

Biden has sought Congress’ approval of a broader $106 billion emergency spending package which would include funding for US border security and military and humanitarian aid for Israel, Taiwan and Ukraine.

Out of the $106 billion spending package, proposed by the White House, more than $61 billion would be allocated to Ukraine.

While there is broad bipartisan backing for Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia, support from Kyiv’s Western allies has dwindled in recent months amid a stalled counter-offensive in the east of the country and little progress along the line of control.

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, any agreement on further military aid to Ukraine has been stopped by Republicans who insist that tougher security measures on the US-Mexico border as a condition for a deal.

Russia fires another barrage of drones

The announcement on Wednesday comes as Russia fired almost 50 Shahed drones at targets in Ukraine, reported the Associated Press. Moscow also reportedly shelled a train station in the southern city of Kherson where more than 100 civilians were gathered to catch a train to Kyiv.

White House to release final package of authorised military aid for Ukraine amid deadlock in Congress

The US government has announced a 250 million dollar Ukraine military aid package, which it says is the last remaining package of weapons available for Ukraine under existing authorization. Congress now must decide whether to keep supporting Kyiv's battle against the Russian invasion.

Two Russians have been handed hefty jail terms for reading poetry against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. A court in Moscow on Thursday (Dec 28) handed seven-year jail sentence to Artyom Kamardin (33) and a five-and-a-half-year sentence to Yegor Shtovba (23). According to news agency AFP, supporters of the two men, who were present inside the courtroom, shouted "Shame!" as the jail-terms were announced.

After Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has dealt with any perceived protest harshly. The criticism of what Russia calls the 'special military operation' has effectively been outlawed.

Artyom Kamardin (33) has reportedly said that he was violently beaten and raped when he was in detention. He said that the officers threatened his girlfriend and made him shoot an apology video.

On the eve of his arrest, Kamardin had recited his poem "Kill me, militia man!". The recitation took place on a square in Moscow where dissidents have held demonstrations since the times of Soviet Russia. He also raised slogans that protested Russian attempts to annex regions in southern Ukraine.

Both Kamardin and Shtovba were found guilty of 'inciting hatred' and "calling for activities threatening state security".

A dormant port of North Korea, which is located close to the border with Russia, has come back to life suddenly.

Experts say this has happened in the wake of the burgeoning trade in arms that are set to reach the frontlines in Ukraine, simultaneously bolstering Kim Jong Un's anaemic economy.

In the Najin port's satellite imagery from October to December, a steady stream of ships was seen at the facility.

Hundreds of shipping containers were getting loaded and unloaded, and rail care was being prepared for transportation of goods, according to reports.

It appeared that the activity picked pace in early October after the United States accused North Korea of providing munitions to Russia.

Images were provided by the White House which showed weapons later getting delivered thousands of miles away to a depot which is located in the Russian town of Tikhoretsk for use in Ukraine.

The transfer of munitions between the US and South Korea included hundreds of thousands of artillery shells which can grow more important as the US Congress and European Union remain divided over military aid which threatens the ability of Kyiv to repel the invasion of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Pyongyang’s decision to deliver munitions at scale once again underscores the grave threat that North Korea poses to international security, this time feeding a conflagration on European soil that has already cost the lives of tens of thousands of Ukrainians and consumed tens of billions of dollars in Western military support,” as per a report by the Royal United Services Institute, which is a UK security think tank, as reported by Bloomberg.

Pyongyang, which was banned from the sale of arms for the last 15 years, has again and again refuted accusations of supplying arms to Russia.

The satellite data's analysis, however, suggests otherwise, as per Bloomberg.

In one of the images dated December 9, the Russian container ship Angara, which was sanctioned by the US, was seen unloading cargo in Najin’s port while containers from North Korea were waiting for loading at an adjacent pier.

“Satellite imagery shows that round trips of cargo vessels between Najin, North Korea, and Dunay, Russia, have continued unabatedly despite additional US sanctions and widespread reporting on this activity in the past few months,” said Jaewoo Shin, an analyst at the Open Nuclear Network in Vienna, while speaking to Bloomberg.

Shin added that though the nature of the cargo cannot be confirmed with the imagery available, the number of transferred containers and round trips suggest that the two countries have been indulging in a significant and ongoing exchange, which includes weapons and other military supplies.

In one of the images dated December 9, the Russian container ship Angara, which was sanctioned by the US, was seen unloading cargo in Najin’s port while containers from North Korea were waiting for loading at an adjacent pier. Watch: Japan, US, South Korea share real-time data on North Korea's missiles “Satellite imagery shows that round trips of cargo vessels between Najin, North Korea, and Dunay, Russia, have continued unabatedly despite additional US sanctions and widespread reporting on this activity in the past few months,” said Jaewoo Shin, an analyst at the Open Nuclear Network in Vienna, while speaking to Bloomberg. Shin added that though the nature of the cargo cannot be confirmed with the imagery available, the number of transferred containers and round trips suggest that the two countries have been indulging in a significant and ongoing exchange, which includes weapons and other military supplies. Pakistan's military wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Wednesday (Dec 27) claimed it had successfully conducted the flight test of Fatah-II, a guided multi-launch rocket system (MLRS). Senior officers from all three wings of the military as well as scientists and engineers were present to witness the flight test. Equipped with state-of-the-art avionics and navigation system, Fatah-II is capable of engaging targets with high precision up to a range of 400 kilometres, ISPR claimed. After the successful launch, the president, prime minister, chairman joint chiefs of staff committee and chief of army staff congratulated participating troops. Notably, the flight test of the second iteration of Fatah MLRS comes over two years after Fatah-1 was launched in August 2021. At the time, ISPR said the rocket system was capable of delivering a conventional warhead. However, a few months later, Ukrainian commanders on the frontlines stated that ammunitions supplied from Pakistan were not of good quality. Such examples, if confirmed, are very explicit anti-Russia actions that we cannot ignore,” said Denis Alipov, the Russian ambassador to India. In what is being seen as a snub to Russia, Ukraine has decided to officially celebrate Christmas on December 25 this year. Notably, Kyiv has held X-Mas celebrations on January 7 for a long time. It will be the first time in over a century that Ukrainians will observe the festival in line with the Gregorian calendar and along with most of the world’s Christians.

What prompted this change?

According to the Ukrainian media, the idea of celebrating Christmas on December 25 was discussed even before Russia launched what it calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine. Like Russia, Ukraine has also been observing the holiday on January 7, following the old Julian calendar.

However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine played a role in settling the debate, which has been going on since 2019. The Ukrainian government passed legislation in July making the date change, in what was viewed as a snub to Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church, which still has some influence on Kyiv, until recently.

The bill, which was later signed into law by President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Ukrainians wanted to “live their own life with their own traditions and holidays”. It added that this change also allows them to “abandon the Russian heritage of imposing Christmas celebrations on January 7.”

The movement to change the date can be traced back to the creation of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, an independent church that held its first service in 2019.

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine formally broke away from the Russian Orthodox Church over Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.
