Indian national dies in Russia after being forced to fight in Ukraine war

Alexei Navalny's wife Yulia Navalnaya on Wednesday (Mar 6) called for a massive election day protest against President Vladimir Putin. She stated that the scale of public support for him since his death was proof that his cause lived on.

Navalny, Putin's most vocal critic, died aged 47 in the Arctic prison colony where he was being held on charges widely seen as punishment for campaigning against Putin.

While speaking in a YouTube video, Navalnaya said that the large attendance at her husband's funeral last week had given her hope.

"Now you all know that there are actually a lot of us, all those who love and support Alexei, who share his ideas and, as long as we have each other, it's not over."

Navalnaya has previously accused Putin of killing her husband and vowed to continue his work, while urging his supporters to support her.

Election in Russia

Russia is all set for the presidential election this March, it isn't expected to bring change to the Kremlin. With most opposition figures either in jail or abroad and many independent media outlets blocked, the Kremlin maintains tight control over the country’s political system.

March's vote is all but guaranteed to see Putin in power until at least 2030. The Russian president has been in power since the last day of 1999 as president or prime minister.

Two would-be challengers who spoke out against the Ukraine war were disqualified from the election on technical grounds and none of the three remaining candidates is critical of Putin.

The Kremlin says he will win because he commands genuine support across the country, with opinion poll ratings around 80%.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for top Russian commanders Sergei Kobylash and Viktor Sokolov, on Tuesday (Mar 5) over alleged war crimes that they committed in Ukraine amid the ongoing war.

Allegations against Russian commanders

The Hague-based ICC, in a statement, said that they have reasonable grounds to believe that the two were responsible for “missile strikes carried out by the forces under their command against the Ukrainian electric infrastructure from at least 10 October 2022 until at least 9 March 2023”.

It added, “During this timeframe, there was an alleged campaign of strikes against numerous electric power plants and sub-stations, which were carried out by the Russian armed forces in multiple locations in Ukraine.”

The court also noted that these attacks caused civilian harm and damage which was clearly excessive.

However, since Russia does not recognise the ICC it is highly likely that the Russian commanders will ever be deported to face the charges.

In 2022, the ICC also issued an arrest for President Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia’s presidential commissioner for children’s rights.

The two Russian commanders, according to ICC, “are each allegedly responsible for the war crime of directing attacks at civilian objects,” “war crime of causing excessive incidental harm to civilians or damage to civilian objects,” and “crime against humanity of inhumane acts”.

At the time of the alleged crimes, Kobylash, 58, was the commander of the so-called long-range aviation of the Russian air force and Sokolov, 61, was an admiral in the Russian navy who commanded the Black Sea Fleet, according to the ICC.

“Every Russian commander who orders strikes against Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure must know that justice will be served,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a post on X welcoming the arrest warrants.

He added, “Every perpetrator of such crimes must know that they will be held accountable.”

The exact details, specific incidents, and possible victims have been kept a secret amid the ongoing investigation, said the ICC.

“By issuing arrest warrants for Kobylash and Sokolov, the ICC has demonstrated that it will pursue cases to the top of the chain of command,” said Erica Guevara Rosas, Amnesty International’s senior director for research, advocacy, and policy, in a statement.

She also called on member states to ensure that the Russian commanders are arrested if they choose to leave Russia.

“In addition to ICC fugitives, President Putin and Ms Lvova-Belova, the international community must ensure that Mr Kobylash or Mr Sokolov are immediately arrested and surrendered to the ICC if they leave Russia,” Rosas added.

Ukraine war: In rare visit to Kharkiv, Netherlands PM signs security deal with Kyiv

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday promised a full investigation after what appeared to be a recording of confidential army talks on the Ukraine war was posted on Russian social media, in a potentially huge embarrassment for Berlin.

The head of Russia's state-backed RT channel, Margarita Simonyan, on Friday posted the 38-minute audio recording of what she claimed were German army officers on February 19 discussing striking Crimea.

"What is being reported is a very serious matter and that is why it is now being investigated very carefully, very intensively and very quickly," Scholz said while on a visit to Rome.

In the recording, discussions can be heard on the possible use by Ukrainian forces of German-made Taurus missiles and their potential impact.

Topics include aiming the missiles at targets such as a key bridge over the Kerch Strait linking the Russian mainland to Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

The discussions also cover the use of missiles provided to Kyiv by France and Britain.

Experts consulted by Der Spiegel magazine said they believed the recording was authentic.

A defence ministry spokeswoman told AFP it was investigating "whether communications in the air force sector were intercepted".

- 'Sworn enemies' -

Kyiv has long been clamouring for Germany to provide it with Taurus missiles, which can reach targets up to 500 kilometres (about 300 miles) away.

Scholz has so far refused to send the missiles, fearing that it would lead to an escalation of the conflict.

"If this story turns out to be true, it would be a highly problematic event," Green party politician Konstantin von Notz told the RND broadcaster.

"The question arises as to whether this is a one-off incident or a structural safety problem," he added.

Speaking at a diplomatic forum in Turkey on Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the recording indicates that Ukraine and its backers "do not want to change their course at all, and want to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia on the battlefield".

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova demanded that Germany "promptly" provide explanations for the discussion.

"Attempts to avoid answering the questions will be regarded as an admission of guilt," she said.

"Our age-old rivals -- the Germans -- have again turned into our sworn enemies," former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy head of the Security Council and the foreign ministry, wrote in a Telegram post.

- Taurus missiles -

The acquisition of German Taurus missiles would provide a massive boost for Ukraine as Kyiv struggles to fend off Russia's invasion.

France and Britain have supplied Kyiv with SCALP or Storm Shadow missiles, both of which have a range of about 250 kilometres.

But Scholz said last week that Germany could not justify matching British and French moves in sending long-range missiles to Ukraine and supporting the weapon system's deployment.

"This is a very long-range weapon, and what the British and French are doing in terms of targeting and supporting targeting cannot be done in Germany," Scholz said, without specifying exactly what he meant.

Britain denied that it had any direct involvement in operating the missiles.

Also read: Russian drone assault in Odesa claims two lives, leaves eight injured "What is being reported is a very serious matter and that is why it is now being investigated very carefully, very intensively and very quickly," Scholz said while on a visit to Rome. A defence ministry spokeswoman told AFP it was investigating "whether communications in the air force sector were intercepted". - 'Sworn enemies' - Kyiv has long been clamouring for Germany to provide it with Taurus missiles, which can reach targets up to 500 kilometres (about 300 miles) away. - Taurus missiles - The acquisition of German Taurus missiles would provide a massive boost for Ukraine as Kyiv struggles to fend off Russia's invasion. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that the military alliance has no plans to send combat troops into Ukraine amid reports that some Western countries may be considering putting boots on the ground in the war-ravaged country.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday (Feb 28) said that the 27-nation bloc should consider using profits from frozen Russian assets to buy military supplies for Ukraine. She was speaking in the European Parliament and urged the EU to take more steps on defence policy.

"It is time to start a conversation about using the windfall profits of frozen Russian assets to jointly purchase military equipment for Ukraine," she said.

"There could be no stronger symbol and no greater use for that money than to make Ukraine and all of Europe a safer place to live."

Von der Leyen said that EU 'may not' face an 'imminent' threat of war but added that such a situation was "not impossible".

"The risks of war should not be overblown, but they should be prepared for and that starts with the urgent need to rebuild, replenish, modernise member states' armed forces," she said.

Russia on Tuesday (Feb 27) claimed that its forces have captured the Ukrainian village of Sieverne near Avdiivka as they made further progress in the eastern part of the war-torn nation. Avdiivka was captured earlier this month.

Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement that the forces captured Sieverne, "occupied more advantageous lines and positions" and struck concentrations of Ukrainian manpower and equipment near three other settlements.

Sieverne's capture comes as the latest development as Russia continues to press its advantage following the capture of the town of Avdiivka this month.

The Ukrainian government said on Sunday (Feb 25) that 50 per cent of arms deliveries by the West do not arrive on time. The Ukrainian government said on Sunday (Feb 25) that 50 per cent of arms deliveries by the West do not arrive on time. Addressing a televised conference in Kyiv, Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov said, "Since the situation is always dynamic at the moment commitment doesn't constitute delivery. 50% of commitments are not delivered on time." "So which means that in the mathematics of war, we'll look to the enemy - their economy is almost 2 trillion. They used up to 15% official and unofficial budget for the war, which constitutes over 150 billion USD. So, annually, it's officially. So basically, whatever committed that doesn't come on time we'll lose people, we'll lose territories," Defence Minister Umerov added. Also read | Explained: Ukraine discusses security deals with allies as war enters third year. What are they? As the conflict has entered its third year, the Ukrainian military is struggling to stave off Russian forces along the sprawling front line. The military in Ukraine's east and south is outgunned and outnumbered, and Russia has secured its first territorial gain in almost a year. Ukraine has signed security deals (that are 10 years long) with its Western allies to defend itself against Russian attacks. The security deals promise continued provision of military and security aid, support to develop Ukraine's defence industrial base, training Ukrainian soldiers, intelligence-sharing and cooperation, and support for cyber defence. Last week, Denmark became the latest NATO member to sign an agreement on security cooperation with Kyiv, the news agency Reuters reported. 'Ukraine tripled weapons production in 2023' Umerov's remarks came as Ukrainian Strategic Industries Minister Oleksandr Kamyshin said on Sunday that his country tripled its weapons production last year and 500 companies were currently working in the defence sector. "Last year, our defence industry produced three times more than in 2022. Our capabilities for 2023 are six times larger than in the previous year. As of today, we have almost half of these capabilities contracted for 2024. We work together with the ministry of defence and the defence forces to secure further contracts (manufacturing)," Strategic Industries Minister Kamyshin said. This is the main designation the front is waiting for as of today. We have reached new levels in artillery shell production," he added. 'We believe US will not abandon us' Meanwhile, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal said on Sunday that Kyiv believed the United States would not abandon it. "We are deeply convinced that the US will not abandon Ukraine in terms of financial, military and armed support," Prime Minister Shmygal said. The US has been one of the biggest financial and military backers of Ukraine since the conflict started on Feb 24, 2022. A crucial US funding package worth $ 60 billion is getting delayed due to domestic political wrangling (in the US). Also watch | War crimes of Russia-Ukraine war: Who's responsible? | Dark World × On Thursday, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told MSNBC that the delay in the US Congress in passing the funding package for Ukraine had already damaged Washington's credibility. "Much damage to America's credibility has already been done because this aid package has already been debated for months,” Foreign Minister Sikorski said. “What this package -- or rather the failure to pass it -- makes us realize is that even if the US president wants to help his allies, he may not be able to do so," Sikorski added.
