The police in a small village in the United Kingdom are trying to solve a rather gruesome mystery which involves dozens of dead wild animals being dumped across Hampshire, a county in England, over the past several months.

What we know about the incident

There have been several cases of dead animals being found dumped across the county. The most recent one took place on Friday (March 15) morning, when around 50 dead hares, as well as a barn owl and a kestrel, were found outside a small community shop.

The discovery has reportedly left the staff of the Broughton Community Shop “distraught”. According to reports, the incident took place on Thursday night when the perpetrators smeared blood on the shop windows and two birds – a kestrel and a barn owl – were found impaled on the door handle.

“Safe to say none of us were expecting our day to start as it did here this morning at Broughton Community Shop. Thank you all for popping in, messaging and phoning to make sure we are ok. We are ok shocked but ok,” said the Broughton Community Shop on their Facebook page.

They also requested nearby residents for CCTV footage and to come forward with any information that they may have. Gruesome images posted on social media show dozens of bodies of hares and birds scattered outside the shop’s door.

The police were called around 6:20 am (local time) on Friday, said a spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police. “The animals have been collected and an investigation is underway.”

The police are also trying to identify the owners of a silver Suzuki Grand Vitara and have asked residents to get in touch with them if they saw a vehicle matching the description.

Similar cases reported

The recent incident is the latest in a string of seemingly related attacks. Last month, dozens of hares and pheasants were left outside a primary school in Awbridge. Over the past few weeks, residents have also reported dead birds and deer across the village roads and fields.

In a recent study published in eClinicalMedicine, researchers delved into the intricate relationship between smoking habits and the likelihood of experiencing a stroke. This comprehensive investigation shed light on how various aspects of smoking behavior influenced the risk of stroke occurrence.

The study revealed that individuals who were current smokers faced a significantly elevated risk of suffering from a stroke compared to those who had never smoked. This risk was particularly pronounced for ischaemic strokes, which occurred when blood flow to the brain was obstructed. Collaborating on this international study were researchers from St John's Medical College and Research Institute in Bengaluru.

Also read | How smoking and drinking alcohol regularly impact eye health

Impact of different smoking habits

Both filtered and non-filtered cigarette consumption were found to be associated with increased stroke risk. Additionally, exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) for more than 10 hours per week was identified as a significant risk factor, nearly doubling the likelihood of experiencing a stroke, particularly ischaemic and intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) strokes, which resulted from bleeding within the brain due to a ruptured blood vessel.

The study highlighted that among individuals under 50 years of age who smoked heavily (more than 20 cigarettes per day), the risk of stroke more than doubled, surpassing the increase observed in participants aged 70 and above. Furthermore, for those aged 50-59, there was an eightfold increase in the risk of large vessel stroke, affecting major blood vessels supplying the brain.

Analysis of data from 32 countries across various income levels revealed regional disparities in stroke risk among current smokers. Western European and North American regions exhibited the highest risk. Interestingly, regardless of income level, the risk was higher in high-income countries (HICs) compared to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with younger smokers facing a heightened risk compared to older individuals. Moreover, the risk escalated with the number of cigarettes smoked per day, particularly in HICs.

The findings of this study shed light on the importance of global initiatives aimed at curbing tobacco use and exposure. To mitigate stroke risk associated with smoking, the researchers advocated for preventive measures targeting youth initiation prevention and smoking cessation support for current smokers. Additionally, legislative actions to establish and promote smoke-free environments were recommended.

Notable regional disparities in smoking prevalence were observed, with around 46 per cent of young men in South East Asia reported as current smokers, while over 16 per cent of young females in Eastern/Central Europe and the Middle East were identified as current smokers.

A UK court ruled on Thursday (March 14) that Australian computer scientist Craig Wright is not "Satoshi Nakamoto", the pseudonym used by the creator of the cryptocurrency bitcoin when it was first unveiled in 2008.

"Dr Wright is not the person who adopted or operated under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto... Dr Wright is not the person who created the Bitcoin system," High Court judge James Mellor said, calling the evidence "overwhelming".

It may be noted that over the years, Craig Wright has claimed that he's the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym used by the author of the 2008 white paper behind Bitcoin.

However, he has failed to back his claims and people in the crypto world were not buying it.

A group called the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (Copa), with support from Jack Dorsey's company Block and Coinbase, took Wright to court. They wanted the judge to say that Wright is not Nakamoto officially.

Wright's claims and the widespread scepticism around them have led to several legal clashes.

UK: Rishi Sunak moves to block takeover of Telegraph newspaper

The UK government has announced a ban on foreign governments owning British newspapers and news magazines. This announcement follows concerns over a proposed Daily Telegraph and Spectator takeover by a United Arab Emirates-backed investment firm, RedBird IMI.

Why is such a ban necessary?

As per a BBC report, the proposed ban, to be introduced as an amendment to the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill, would "deliver additional protections for a free press".

Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay announcing the ban said the new law would "rule out newspaper and periodical news magazine mergers involving ownership, influence or control by foreign states".

Labour has indicated support for the change, which comes amidst cross-party pressure on the government to address the issue.

As per Lord Parkinson, the ban would not apply to broadcasters.

The proposed ban will refer proposed media mergers involving foreign states to the Competition and Markets Authority for investigation, with the Secretary of State required to block or unwind any merger resulting in foreign state ownership, influence, or control, he explained.

The move comes as RedBird IMI continues its efforts to take control of the Daily and Sunday Telegraph newspaper titles and Spectator magazine. The fund, largely owned by Sheikh Mansour of the UAE, faced growing political opposition.

RedBird IMI reacts

Reacting to the government's decision, a spokesperson for RedBird IMI said they were "extremely disappointed by today's development" and stated they "remain committed" to investing in global media.

"We will now evaluate our next steps, with commercial interests continuing to be the sole priority."

"To date, Redbird IMI has made six investments across the UK and US, and we believed the UK's media environment was worthy of further investment.

"As with each of our deals, we have been clear that the acquisition of The Telegraph and The Spectator has been a fully commercial undertaking."

However, the company's bid for the newspapers looks likely to fail, reported BBC citing sources close to the matter.

Andrew Neil, chairman of the Spectator, also noted that the UAE bid "now looks dead in the water". Former Daily Telegraph editor Lord Moore of Etchingham remarked that such a rule should have existed from the start to provide clarity on proposed takeovers.

Baroness Stowell, chair of the Communications and Digital Committee, emphasised the importance of preventing foreign powers from acquiring UK news media organizations.

"Allowing foreign governments to own such a critical and sensitive part of our nation would damage public confidence in all of us yet further if it was allowed to happen," she said.
