United Kingdom's Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to declare an end to the era of 'globalisation' after US President Donald Trump's massive reciprocal tariffs that has triggered a global trade war, according to a report by The Times.
The UK PM will address the nation on Monday, where he is likely to admit that globalisation, which started after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, has "failed" millions of voters and acknowledge why Trump's economic nationalism is popular among his supporters.
The UK does not agree with Trump's 10 per cent "baseline" tariffs and other recent protectionist measures, a senior UK official told the publication.

"We've got to demonstrate that our approach, a more active Labour government, a more reformist government, can provide the answers for people in every part of this country," the official added.

From dust-filled days of the Industrial Revolution to becoming a manufacturing hub in Britain to shining on the showbiz map with 'Peaky Blinders' to now being dubbed as the 'garbage capital', Birmingham has come a long way!
The streets in the UK's second city are filled with approximately 17,000 tonnes of trash as workers announced 'bin strike' last month.

What is the 'bin strike' and why is it happening?

As per a BBC report, the members of the union in Birmingham announced a 'bin strike' after a dispute with the city council over plans to scrap the role of Waste Recycling and Collection Officer (WRCO). The union said that the move would lead to pay cuts. It added that about 170 affected workers faced losing an average of £8,000 (10,308 USD) a year due to the decision.
The union claimed that the removal of WRCO would not allow them "a fair path for pay progression". It alleged that the city council is planning to downgrade the pay of other non-management roles in the service.
The 'bin strike' started with walkouts that were planned in phases. The first such walkout happened on January 6. However, the union said that the decision to move to an all-out strike was because the authority hired temporary labour during their 'walkout protest'.
The workers have been on strike since March 11 after striking intermittently since January.

What has the Birmingham City Council said?

Birmingham City Council said that the WRCO role was not industry standard and did not exist in other councils, as per BBC. It added that the change was part of the waste collection service restructure to make sure the workforce could meet the challenges of delivering a modern waste service.
The authorities also claimed that affected staff would lose an average of £8,000 per year was incorrect. While the council declared the dispute a major incident earlier this week, it is causing misery for the residents who say they face a public health crisis.

What is a 'major incident'?

A major incident is a situation that requires special arrangements to be implemented by one or more emergency responder agencies. The declaration of a 'major incident' means the council can increase its street cleaning operation, extend opening hours and fly-tipping removal and bring in extra vehicles and crews. It also allows the Labour-run council to "work with partners to better manage the risks the city is facing."

Birmingham City Council leader John Cotton said that the announcement was made in response to public health concerns by the residents and the struggles of the authorities to clean the trash all over the city.
"I respect the right to strike and protest, however, actions on the picket line must be lawful and sadly the behaviour of some now means we are seeing a significant impact on residents and the city's environment. Unless we declare a major incident and deploy the waste service's contingency plan, then we would be unable to clear the backlog of waste on the streets," Cotton was quoted by BBC.

Negotiations and Government's response

Negotiations and talks between the union and the city council have not yielded results with the union announcing on Friday (Apr 3) that the strike would continue.
The matter was also raised in the UK Parliament with Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemning the bin strike as "completely unacceptable". Starmer said he supported the Labour-run city council's decision to declare it a major incident.

His reaction came after Tory leader Kemi Badenoch accused him of not wanting to talk about Birmingham. Independent MP Ayoub Khan also blasted Starmer over Labour's "disgraceful" Birmingham bin strike failures.
UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner blamed the previous Tory government for the build-up of rubbish in Birmingham. However, the Birmingham City Council has been ruled by the Labour Party since 2012.

The UK has seen a significant rise in employees taking sick leave due to respiratory illness. The number has risen by 10 million; what used to be 6 million in 2020, the year the world witnessed the pandemic. The stark rise in the numbers is not just concerning but rather alarming, as questions have been raised about the air quality and the little that is done to minimise the irritants in the air.

A recent study has found that young people are more worried about their finances, work, and job security than social media, climate crisis and culture war debates.
The recent UK Youth Poll 2025, which was published by Glasgow University’s John Smith Centre, also highlights that the differences within Gen Z regarding class, education or gender are more pronounced than differences between generations.

According to the poll, “Financial worries are the biggest source of anxiety for young people and easing them is the key to making young people happier. Young people are focused on quality-of-life issues that affect their day-to-day lives, less so global or cultural matters.”
The top three “biggest contributors to you feeling nervous, anxious or on edge” as per the poll are financial worries (37 per cent), work pressures (23 per cent) and job insecurity or unemployment (20 per cent). While social media (14 per cent) and climate change (10 per cent) were far behind on the list.

The majority of the young people agreed that social media should be banned for those under the age of 16. They believe that racism is a significant problem in the UK and that toxic masculinity is becoming more common. The poll also found that the youth are divided on the impact of feminism and support immigration.

The survey, which included 16 to 29-year-olds, also discovered that “Democracy is backed over a dictatorship by 57 per cent to 27 per cent. But young people agree ‘democracy in the UK is in trouble’ by 63 per cent to 24 per cent.”

Many find solace in travelling, and UK's Monica Scott has taken it to a whole new level, as described in her latest social media post. Scott's recent 'extreme day trip' post went viral, and the internet has been buzzing about this latest travel trend that is catching on. These are compact and meticulously planned day trips with crisp itineraries.
Talking to news outlet BBC, Scott said, "My first few extreme day trips were to Ireland when I had clients over there." The 37-year-old would have regular work trips, and it was during these that she thought she could explore places in short durations as well.

"I'd quite often pop over for a one- or two-hour meeting and come home. Then I realised I could stay [a bit longer] and make a full day of it," she added.
In her recent social media post, she said, "Extreme day trips are exhausting, so factor this in for the following day." She highlights how these trips let you come back home by night. "Finally, enjoy having an incredible adventure but also sleeping in your own bed the same night!"
Scott gave tips to those who want to try exploring through day trips.
1. Use Skyscanner to find flights using the ‘Everywhere’ function. I find booking 6-8 weeks in advance is cheapest, and it’s best to search by date, not destination.
2. Dublin, Belfast or Cork are easy places for your first extreme day trip. As you get more confident and realise how fun it is, then you might want to go further.

Report reveals rape culture in UK and Ireland primary schools

An investigation has found that rape culture exists in over 1,600 primary schools across the UK and Ireland, where students aged five to 11 have anonymously shared allegations of sexual violence and harassment. These reports include incidents of inappropriate behaviour, such as sexual harassment and physical assault.
The findings also revealed that almost half of children under seven are exhibiting signs of misogynistic behaviour, with "misogynistic rhetoric and harmful gender norms" present from as early as nursery age. Furthermore, over 60 per cent of teachers reported that children under nine had been exposed to pornography.

Alarming testimonies

One 12-year-old wrote, "I was 10 years old, walking to school when a car pulled up. Three teenage boys asked me to get in. I wasn’t stupid; I said no, but one of them grabbed my wrist. I wish I could say I fought back, but I was too scared."
Several anonymous accounts highlight the severity of the problem. One testimony described how, at five years old, a child was physically assaulted by another student. "A five-year-old boy started calling me beautiful and sexy. He followed me into the toilets and smashed my head against the sink," the victim wrote.
Despite telling her mother, the school dismissed it as "just playing." The assaults continued, and the boy was never expelled.

Another testimony revealed how, at age 10, a girl was threatened by a group of boys. "A boy told me one of the boys was going to lick my vagina. Another said they’d pay £20 to rape me. I didn’t know what rape meant," she recounted.
When the incident was reported, the headteacher allegedly told her, "As women, we have to accept what men say to us."
The charity behind the website, Everyone’s Invited, has urged for relationship and sex education to start as early as nursery or reception to address the growing issue of sexual violence and harassment.
Founded in 2020 by Soma Sara, a survivor of sexual abuse, the charity is dedicated to challenging rape culture in schools.

A separate report by the National Police Chiefs' Council revealed that child sexual abuse and exploitation had risen by 400 per cent between 2013 and 2024. Alarmingly, more than half of the alleged offenders in these cases were children themselves. The report concluded that rape culture was “endemic” in primary schools.
It emphasised the role of the online world in the increase of violence, saying phones gave children access “to the most extreme content possible with a click of the finger”.

Tourist detained for 19 days

The update follows the widely reported case of Rebecca Burke, a 28-year-old graphic artist from the UK, who was held for 19 days by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement over what was described as a “visa mix-up.”
Her parents, Paul and Andrea Burke, spoke to the BBC about the ordeal, describing how their daughter was taken in “leg chains, waist chains and handcuffs.”
“She is not Hannibal Lecter,” said Paul Burke, adding that the experience left Rebecca “traumatised.” She has since returned home.

Travel warnings and tourism impact

These high-profile cases, combined with revised travel warnings, are raising concerns in the tourism industry. Experts say that international coverage, Trump’s tariffs, and his rhetoric against other nations are making the US less appealing to foreign visitors.
