Shamima Begum, who left the United Kingdom’s city of London to join the Islamic State (IS) in Syria as a schoolgirl approximately eight years ago, on Wednesday (February 22), lost her appeal against the decision to revoke her British citizenship. She left the UK as a 15-year-old with her two friends who have reportedly passed away in two separate incidents. In 2019, Begum was stripped of her British citizenship by then-Home Secretary Sajid Javid as a national security risk.

Who is Shamima Begum?

The now 23-year-old was born in London to parents of Bangladeshi heritage, Begum left for Syria to join ISIS in 2015. She was reported to be the first woman to leave the UK to join the terrorist organisation two years later, as per Sky News. Begum who was attending the Bethnal Green Academy and resided in eastern London was reportedly radicalised by someone called Aqsa Mahmood.

She went on to marry an IS fighter and gave birth to three children all of whom died as infants. Begum is currently living in northern Syria’s Roj camp which is run by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Her case made international headlines in 2019 after she was found in a displacement camp by a journalist as an “ISIS bride”.

At the time she was nine months pregnant and urged the UK government to allow her to return to her home country to give birth to her child, as per media reports. However, her citizenship was revoked by the home secretary and Begum has since challenged the decision.

The recent verdict

The Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC), rejected Begum’s appeal. Judge Robert Jay, of the commission which hears appeals against decisions to remove citizenship on national security grounds, gave the decision after a five-day hearing in November. In the previous hearing, Begum’s lawyers had argued that it was the home office’s duty to investigate whether she was a victim of trafficking before revoking her citizenship.

Justice Jay, who wrote the judgment published on Wednesday said the commission finds “credible suspicion" that Begum had been trafficked to Syria for “sexual exploitation”. However, this reason was deemed “insufficient” for them to conclude that the home secretary’s decision was unlawful. The ruling also means that she would be barred from entering the UK from Syria, as per BBC.

The SIAC judge also said that the officials in London are seeing this as a “black and white issue” and the government’s witnesses’ evidence to the tribunal “betrayed an all-or-nothing approach”. Whereas, the commission was concerned about the security services’ “apparent downplaying of the significance of radicalisation and grooming, in stating that what happened to Ms Begum is not unusual”, said Justice Jay.

The SIAC concluded that there were “arguable breaches of duty on the part of various State bodies” which allowed Begum to leave the country, said Jay, in a summary of the judgement.

“This secretary of state, speaking through Sir James (Eadie KC), maintains that national security is a weighty factor and that it would take a very strong countervailing case to outweigh it,” said the SIAC judge.

He added, “However, under our constitutional settlement these sensitive issues are for the secretary of state to evaluate and not for the commission.” Notably, the commission does not have the power to rule if Begum is allowed to return to the UK, even if it found that her citizenship should not have been stripped.

“Nowhere near over”: Begum’s legal team

In a statement, Begum’s lawyers, Gareth Pierce and Daniel Furner, of Birnberg Pierce Solicitors criticised the ruling and called it a “lost opportunity” to reverse the “profound mistake and a continuing injustice”. They added, “The outcome is that there is now no protection for a British child trafficked out of the UK if the home secretary invokes national security,” as per media reports.

Begum’s lawyers also called her “indefinite detention” in Syria, “unlawful and arbitrary”. According to the BBC, they said the case was “nowhere near over” and the decision will be challenged.

At the five-day hearing, last year, her attorneys asserted that she was “recruited, transported, transferred, harboured and received in Syria for the purposes of 'sexual exploitation' and 'marriage' to an adult male”.

The attorneys argued that the British officials failed to recognise that Begum was a “victim of child trafficking” when she travelled to Syria and remained there.

An argument was recently found “insufficient” by the SIAC which led to the dismissal of her appeal on all nine grounds. The British-born, 23-year-old is also said to hold Bangladeshi citizenship through her father, as per media reports, However, would be hanged if she returns to the country which has effectively left her stateless, her lawyers had said in November.

During the previous hearing, attorney Eadie KC representing the secretary of state to the SIAC also said, “You can be trafficked in the most ghastly, unacceptable way, exposed in the most unacceptable way, desensitised in the most unacceptable way and yet, unfortunately...still be a security threat,” reported Sky News.

UK Home Office welcomes the decision

A UK Home Office spokesperson said that they were “pleased” with the judgement and added, “The government’s priority remains maintaining the safety and security of the UK and we will robustly defend any decision made in doing so,” as per British media reports.

Amnesty International UK calls the verdict “very disappointing”

In a statement following the judgement, the UK-based rights group Amnesty International called the decision “very disappointing” and argued that Begum had stayed in London before she was “lured to Syria” as an impressionable 15-year-old. They added, “ISIS have been responsible for appalling crimes in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere, but that doesn’t change that Shamima Begum is British and was groomed and trafficked to Syria.”

Furthermore, the rights organisation criticising the home secretary said “exiling British citizens by stripping them of their citizenship,” should not be their business. The power to banish citizens should not exist in the modern world, particularly in the context of a “person who was seriously exploited as a child,” said Amnesty International.

Begum claims that while in Syria she married a Dutch IS fighter, Yago Riedijk and had three children (two sons and one daughter) all of whom died as infants. The now 23-year-old is said to be an “enforcer” who recruited other women to the caliphate, reported Sky News. In 2016, Begum’s two friends Abase and Sultana were reportedly killed.

Sultana had married a Somalian IS fighter, her family told ITV while Abase was reportedly married to an Australian IS fighter but this has not been confirmed.

2019

After 2016 Begum’s actions and whereabouts remained unknown until a Times journalist found her at a displacement camp in Syria, three years later. Reportedly, at the time she had fled the village of Baghuz which was witnessing intense fighting during the terrorist group’s last stand. Begum with her husband had three children, two of whom died of disease or malnutrition and the third died in the al-Hawl camp.

In February, the now-former UK home secretary stripped Begum of her British citizenship, while Bangladeshi officials say that if she returns she will face the death penalty for her involvement in terrorism. Furthermore, they had also said that since she has never visited Dhaka, Begum does not hold dual citizenship, reported Al Jazeera. In April, she was granted legal aid by the Ministry of Justice to appeal the decision.

The British publisher of Roald Dahl's classic children's books is being slammed for censorship by critics after they removed colourful language from classics such as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Matilda" to make them more in sync with modern readers. A scan through the new editions of Dahl's books now available in bookstores shows that content relating to weight, mental health, gender and race were modified as reported by Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper. Augustus Gloop, Charlie's hoggish antagonist in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," which originally was published in 1964, is no longer "enormously fat," just "enormous." in the new edition. The word "black" was omitted from the description of the terrible tractors in 1970s "The Fabulous Mr. Fox." The machines as per the latest editions are just "murderous, brutal-looking monsters." Salman Rushdie was among the first to react to this rewriting of Dahl's words. Rushdie was brutally attacked last year at an event in New York state. Scientists have discovered the pieces of DNA which are said to act like “Bond villains” in helping cancers spread. The bits of genetic material known as extrachromosomal DNA or ecDNA were found by researchers working on an initiative known as the Cancer Grand Challenges, which is backed by Cancer Research in the United Kingdom and the United States National Cancer Institute. The team of researchers included chemists, biologists, geneticists, mathematicians, and immunologists based in London and California as well as other centres, reported the Guardian.

The scientists also said that this ecDNA can help tumours to develop resistance to anti-cancer drugs, therefore, its discovery can revolutionise treatments of some of the most aggressive tumours affecting people today. Speaking to the Guardian, Professor Paul Mischel of California’s Stanford University, called the discovery of how these microscopic agents behave inside the human body a “game changer.”

He added, that they believe that this ecDNA is responsible for a “large number of the more advanced, most serious cancers” that people are suffering from today and if they can “block their activities, we can block the spread of these cancers.” Notably, these small circular pieces of genetic information can enable cancer cells to evolve rapidly and become more resistant to existing cancer treatments.

Furthermore, researchers also found that the ecDNA act as cancer-causing genes as they are somehow able to separate themselves from a person’s chromosomes and “have started to behave in ways that circumvent the normal rules of genetics” said Stanford University geneticist Howard Chang, as per the Guardian. He added, “They behave like villains in a Bond film. At first, in a film, you see different explosions, killings and disasters occurring and you don’t know why they are happening or who is responsible. Then, at some point, you finally meet the villain who is revealed to be the agent of all this mayhem.”

While these genes, known as oncogenes, can be targeted by a range of drugs and therapies it is their resistance to these methods which allows cancer to return, Professor Mischel explained. Researchers also found that in some of the most aggressive forms of cancer, the oncogenes were “actually on extrachromosomal DNA.”

He added, “The vulnerable gene had quickly disappeared when threatened by cancer drugs and was hidden in ecDNA. Then it reappeared once it was safe for it to start causing damage again”. Therefore, the researchers are now “looking to pinpoint the achilles heel of ecDNA and have identified a protein that helps hold it together”, said Chang, reported the Guardian. He also spoke about how the team has found the drug which has a “promising effect” on the identified protein and in a few years with a lot more testing he is sure that they will find the best way to tackle ecDNA.

A massive dinosaur footprint which is said to be made by a possibly squatting or resting dinosaur some 166 million years ago, was found off the coast of the United Kingdom’s Yorkshire. The discovery was made last year by local archaeologist Marie Woods as she stumbled upon the more than three feet long (80 centimetres), three-toed footprint which is the largest of its kind found in east Yorkshire county which is also known as the “Dinosaur Coast”. The findings of the discovery were published in the journal of Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society on Thursday.

“I couldn’t believe what I was looking at, I had to do a double take. I have seen a few smaller prints when out with friends, but nothing like this. I can no longer say that ‘archaeologists don’t do dinosaurs’,” said Woods, in a statement. Notably, the Yorkshire coast where the discovery was made, is known for producing a number of fossils over the years including thousands of dinosaur footprints.

The now co-author of the study stumbled upon the fossil in April 2021 at Burniston Bay, about five kilometres north of Scarborough in the UK. Subsequently, she contacted her friend Dr Dean Lomax, a palaeontologist at The University of Manchester and the co-author of the new paper, who as per CNN initially thought that Woods was joking.

The author of the ‘Dinosaurs of the British Isles’ called it a "wonderful find" and in a statement said, “Not only does this specimen represent the largest theropod footprint found in Yorkshire, but by studying the angle of the footprint, its shape, and the impressions of the claws, the fossil provides insights into the behaviour of this individual from around 166 million years ago.”

He added, “In fact, features of the footprint may even suggest that this large predator was squatting down before standing up. It’s fun to think this dinosaur might well have been strolling along a muddy coastal plain one lazy Sunday afternoon in the Jurassic.” After the discovery, the duo moved quickly to secure the Jurassic Period specimen and along with three fossil collectors carefully transported it to the Scarborough Museum and Galleries.

The specimen was donated to the aforementioned museum by Woods and a “local fossil hunter” as well as the co-author of the new study, Rob Taylor. Notably, the fossil hunter in light of the discovery, realised that he had actually spotted the tracks five months earlier, however, since it was not completely exposed at the time, the full extent and importance of the footprint went unnoticed.

“This is only the sixth specimen of this type recorded from the Cleveland Basin since they were first discovered in 1934”, the authors noted in the recently published paper. The researchers also believe that the footprint belongs to a carnivorous Megalosaurus-like creature which was at least 8.2 to 9.8 feet tall at the hips, said lead author and geologist John Hudson. The study also attributed the “elongated metapodium” (rear section of the dinosaur’s foot) to a crouching or resting behaviour.

“This important discovery adds further evidence that meat-eating giants once roamed this area during the Jurassic,” said Hudson. According to Lomax, named in 1824, Megalosaurus was the world’s first official dinosaur after its bones were discovered in England’s Oxfordshire county. The dinosaur was also reportedly one of the largest predators of its time with a large skull, sharp teeth, and at least 26.2 to 29.5 feet in length.

UK's annual inflation rate dropped further last month, official data showed on Wednesday (February 15). However, it still remained above 10 per cent. This has potential to prolong cost-of-living crisis that has sparked huge strikes.

The UK Consumer Prices Index (CPI) fell to 10.1 percent in January compared with a rate of 10.5 percent in December, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said in a statement.

Inflation around the world is easing after striking the highest levels in decades last year as the invasion of Ukraine by Russia fuelled energy and food prices.

The news sent the pound diving 1.5 percent to $1.1990 in afternoon trade as dealers bet on less aggressive monetary policy from the Bank of England (BoE).

In turn, that helped push London's benchmark FTSE 100 index of top companies to a record peak above 8,000 points.

The struggling pound boosts London-listed multinationals whose earnings are in dollars.

In October, the inflation in UK was above 11 per cent. The high inflation over months has eroded the value of wages. Britain is currently facing its biggest strikes by public and private sector workers in more than a decade.

"These latest figures show the cost-of-living crisis is still pummelling workers' pay packets," said Sharon Graham, general secretary at major British union Unite.

"Unite will continue to fight for and win better wages in the face of this crisis," she added in a statement.

A separate measure of UK inflation -- the retail prices index -- was unchanged at 13.4 percent in January.

A damning study conducted by a senior Bank of England policymaker has revealed that Brexit hurt the UK economy astronomically as it suffered business investment loss to the tune of $35 billion (£29 bn) since 2016, roughly amounting to $1,200 (£1,000) per household.

Jonathan Haskel, a member of the Bank of England's monetary policy committee, inferring from his report said private sector investment had basically flatlined post the 2016 referendum to leave the European Union.

"Current productivity penalty is about 1.3 per cent of GDP. That 1.3 per cent of GDP is about £29 billion, or roughly £1000 per household," Haskel was quoted as saying by The Overshoot.

"At the end of the forecast period, the penalty goes up to something like 2.8 per cent of GDP, which is very close to the 3.2 per cent number we found using the totally different reduced form methodology based on goods trade volumes."

In the last six years, the UK has suffered far more when compared to other major economies of the region.

The bad news is that the productivity gap has left long-lasting gashes which are not expected to heal unless there is a drastic turnaround in policy.

Haskel added that the economic boom between 2012-2016 plateaued afterwards and the UK quietly dropped to the bottom of G7 countries, investment-wise.
