Austria is facing heavy criticism after the country granted visas to Russian lawmakers who have been sanctioned amid Moscow’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine to attend the Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) meeting in Vienna. This comes as the European Union member nation has tried to balance its long-standing position of military neutrality amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. At least 81 OSCE delegates from 20 countries criticised Austria’s decision, in a letter and called upon the government to ban the participation of the sanctioned Russians, reported the Associated Press.

The letter in question was addressed to Austria’s chancellor, foreign minister and other officials in which at least 81 delegates from 20 countries including France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Ukraine, and so on have called upon the government in Vienna to ban the participation of sanctioned Russian lawmakers. They wrote, “Russian parliamentarians are an integral part of the power system and complicit in the crimes Russia commits every day in Ukraine.”

Therefore, lawmakers from Moscow “have no place in an institution tasked with promoting sincere dialogue and opposition to the war,” the letter added. They also said that Russia would use the meeting to “sow disinformation, fake news and hate speech” and their participation would be read as “indirect legitimisation and part of a return to ‘business as usual,’” reported AFP.

Since the beginning of the conflict, while the Austrian government has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it has asserted the need to maintain diplomatic relations with Moscow. The European country is also home to several international organisations, including the 57-member nation OSCE which was established during the Cold War to facilitate dialogue between the East and West, of which Russia is also a part.

Reports suggest that Moscow plans to send delegates on February 23 and 24 when the OSCE’s parliamentary assembly is set to convene. However, the Russian delegation includes at least 15 lawmakers who have been sanctioned by the EU. Earlier this month, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg also defended the government’s decision to issue visas to the sanctioned Russian lawmakers.

He argued that despite the “brutal Russian attack against Ukraine”, it is important to have open channels of communication with Moscow. Additionally, the foreign ministry said that they are legally obligated as the host of OSCE headquarters in the country’s capital city to grant visas to representatives of nations who want to participate. So far, Austria has only sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine but unlike most of its EU counterparts has not sent weapons to Kyiv.

This also comes days after Austria expelled four Russian diplomats for acting “in a manner inconsistent with their diplomatic status”. Out of the four diplomats, the two stationed at the Russian Embassy in Austria were declared personae non-gratae and ordered to leave the country by February 8. Whereas the other two worked at the Russian mission to the United Nations in Vienna, said the Austrian foreign ministry, in a statement.

It added, the two working with the UN, acted in a way that was inconsistent with the host country agreement between the United Nations and Austria. While the ministry did not detail the actions of the diplomats, officials speaking on condition of anonymity to Reuters said that the case involved spying.

Austria faces criticism for granting visas to sanctioned Russian lawmakers for the upcoming OSCE meeting

An Oxford University-led study has found alarming levels of toxic PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals” in the ice around Svalbard, Norway which pose a risk to the region’s wildlife, reported the Guardian. The Norwegian Arctic ice consists of 26 types of PFAS compounds which once the ice melts can be passed to ecosystems like Arctic fjords and tundra.

The PFAs refer to a class of around 12,000 chemicals which are often found in consumer products which resist water, heat or stains and are also called “forever chemicals” since they do not naturally break down over time. Additionally, these chemicals are linked to a number of diseases including cancer, liver disease, etc. Therefore, these contaminants, once passed on, can affect the entire food web from small organisms like plankton or fish to apex predators in the region like polar bears.

Notably, high levels of PFAs have been found in the polar bear's bloodstream, as per the report. The study found the levels of these “forever chemicals” in the ice, were higher than the United States advisory drinking water limits were.

“As a polar bear, you have exposure to toxic man-made chemicals, and stresses from a changing habitat,” said Dr William Hartz, a lead author on the study, as per the Guardian. He also spoke about how this “washout of contaminants” occurs seasonally and some PFAs seem mobile during melts.

The lead author also noted the “doubling up effect” on animals as climate changes and ice melts since the climate has reportedly been warming up in Svalbard faster than the world average. The study also found high levels of TFA, a refrigeration byproduct caused by hydrofluoroolefin (HFOs) after chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), a potent greenhouse gas used for refrigeration, was phased out.

The HFOs, which are also greenhouse gasses once released, can turn into TFA, the levels of which the study finds have been increasing in the Arctic. Additionally, TFA and other PFAS compounds are highly mobile and can even move through the atmosphere to anywhere in the world. While TFA is said to be less toxic when compared to several other PFAs, its limited knowledge needs addressing, said the authors, as no one is fully aware of the damage these compounds might be causing to the environment.

At least 15 people have been arrested, including a 13-year-old, after violence broke out outside a hotel in the United Kingdom housing asylum seekers late Friday (February 10), said the local police on Saturday. The initially peaceful protest and counter-protest took place in Knowsley near Liverpool in northwest England which eventually descended into chaos, causing injuries, a police van set on fire, while offenders also threw lit fireworks at police officers, as per media reports citing officials.

The incident took place outside the Suites hotel, where 15 people between the ages of 13 and 54 were arrested including 13 men and two women. “A number of individuals who turned up at the Suites Hotel last night were intent on using a planned protest to carry out violent and despicable behaviour,” said Serena Kennedy, the chief constable of Merseyside police, as per the Guardian.

She added, “They turned up armed with hammers and fireworks to cause as much trouble as they could and their actions could have resulted in members of the public and police officers being seriously injured, or worse.” The hotel in question has been providing refuge to asylum seekers since January last year under a British government contract, said the Knowsley Council.

Meanwhile, the chief constable also said that there were multiple injuries including one of the police officers and “it is only through luck that no one was more seriously injured or worse.” She added, “All of those arrested will now be questioned and we will continue to gather all evidence as part of this investigation and our officers are continuing to examine CCTV footage in a bid to identify anyone else involved,” reported the Guardian.

Additionally, Kennedy also said that ahead of the violence on Friday, rumours and misinformation about a man who allegedly made inappropriate advances toward a teenage girl were circulating on social media. “We know that those involved in the violent activity last night used this as an excuse to commit violence and intimidate members of the public”, said the chief constable, adding that an investigation into the incident about the teenage girl is underway.

“Social media speculation, misinformation and rumour can actually damage the outcome of investigations and cause unnecessary fear and consequent behaviour, so I would continue to ask people to be mindful of the damage that such actions can cause,” said Kennedy. The local police have also said that they would enforce a dispersal order for the next two days around the Suites Hotel while extra officers will be placed to carry out high-visibility policing in a bid to prevent further incidents, reported Reuters.

An assessment by the UK government has revealed that the policy to deter illegal immigration had a 'disproportionate impact' on the people of colour. The hostile environment measures were introduced during the tenure of former UK PM David Cameron. These rules were later rebranded as 'compliant environment' policies. The impact assessment of these policies was first study of the legislation's potential risks.

The report was published on Thursday (February 19). It was observed that Indians, Pakistanis, Nigerians and Bangladeshis were most likely to be affected by the policies. On the other hand, Albanians and Brazilians, among the top five nationalities to be found residing illegally in the UK, were least likely to be impacted.

“We note that of the top five nationalities impacted most are identifiable as being from/of brown or black heritage and all five are visibly not white,” the document says as reported by The Guardian.

“The internal data suggests some of the compliant environment measures may disproportionately impact on people of colour.”

Through this report, the government has studied the reasons why these policies caused the 'windrush scandal' in which thousands of legal residents in the UK found that they were no longer able to find employment, open bank account or avail medical facilities from the National Health Service (NHS).

These policies were devised by Theresa May when she was the home secretary.

“The aim is to create here in Britain a really hostile environment for illegal migration,” she had said at the time.

UK policy against illegal immigration 'disproportionately' impacted people of colour

A damning report made by Members of Parliament in UK has revealed that the British government was not able to help all Afghans who helped it during when Afghanistan was under the control of international coalition led by the US. These Afghans are now at the mercy of the Taliban regime. They remain stranded in Afghanistan. These Afghans helped the UK forces by working as interpreters, contractors. It is estimated that at least 4600 such Afghans are stranded inside the country.

The previous Taliban regime was toppled by the US-led coalition after 9/11 terror attacks. The coalition forces were in control of Afghanistan for two decades. However, the Taliban rapidly gained control of the country in the run-up to the total withdrawal of foreign forces in August 2021. As the foreign troops were withdrawn, thousands of Afghans who had helped the coalition were also evacuated to western countries as there was a danger of Taliban reprisal against them for having helped the foreign troops. However, thousands still remain inside Afghanistan.

“The withdrawal from Afghanistan was a dark chapter in UK military history. For the Afghans who cooperated with the UK, and the British troops who served in the country, the nightmare is far from over," said Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood, chairman of defence select committee. He was quoted by The Guardian.

“They are at risk of harm as a direct result of assisting the UK mission. We can’t change the events that unfolded in August 2021, but we owe it to those Afghans, who placed their lives in danger to help us, to get them and their families to safety.”

Britain's Ministry of Defence told the committee that at least 4600 Afghans who helped British forces were stranded in Afghanistan. The ministry also said that 6600 people had been relocated by last November.

Russia warns of 'bloody harvest' in war escalation if UK sends fighter jets to Ukraine

The country's prime minister, Rishi Sunak, clearly implied on Wednesday that Britain's recent agreement to train Ukrainian pilots on NATO-standard jets is merely a "first step" towards supplying Ukraine with modern British fighter planes to aid in the fight against invading Russian forces.

According to a report by anti-corruption campaigners Transparency International published on Tuesday (February 7), at least 52,000 properties in the United Kingdom are owned by anonymous investors including some “close to the Kremlin”. This comes despite the British government’s crackdown last year on Russian money which came from shell companies, tax havens, and opaque ownership structures, which were a part of the broader economic sanctions which were imposed on Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine.

The report shows that the total value of all properties put together is more than $8 billion which also includes luxury real estate in London. Additionally, they are also purchased with “suspect funds” via “secretive offshore companies”, the report by Transparency International UK claims. More than 18,000 offshore companies together hold almost 52,000 properties in England and Wales.

It added, that these companies have either “ignored the law altogether or submitted information which makes it impossible for the public to find out who owns them. This includes firms reportedly owned by kleptocrats, oligarchs and individuals subject to sanctions”. Additionally, the report also alleges that more than a fifth of the aforementioned total amount invested into the properties were “suspect funds” from Russia from those who are sanctioned and “close to the Kremlin”.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the British government in August launched the “Register of Overseas Entities” (ROE) which requires foreign companies to declare the ultimate beneficiary of any property owned in the UK. The findings of the report anti-corruption campaigners published are partly based on an analysis of the ROE database which comprises details of the real owners of offshore firms that hold UK property. They also noted that at least half of the 32,440 companies required to declare their ownership have failed to do so.

Another loophole that the report noted was how such companies file information which claims to have no beneficial owners which at least 12 per cent of the firms in question have done, “an issue we previously identified as a potential loophole that would allow offshore companies to sidestep the rules,” said the UK-based organisation.

“Transparency over who really owns property here is vital to addressing Britain's role as a global hub for dirty money,” said Duncan Hames, the group’s policy director, as per AFP. He added, “Our analysis reveals there are far too many companies that could be trying to skirt the rules, not knowing they exist, or ignoring them altogether.” Therefore, Transparency International also called for more government action to “to close loopholes in the law” and active enforcement of reform aimed at providing fewer places for corrupt wealth to hide.

Over 50,000 properties in UK owned by anonymous investors, some with Kremlin ties: Report

Britain's Royal Mail unveiled first postage stamps featuring image of King Charles III. The unveiling on Wednesday (February 8) has followed Charles' ascension to the throne last September.

The new so-called "definitive stamp" -- intended for everyday use and consisting solely of the monarch's head, the stamp's value and a barcode -- will go on general sale from April 4.

The image on the stamps was approved by King Charles himself. The image has been adapted from the official effigy that appears on new coins in the UK.

Charles' mother Queen Elizabeth passed away on September 8 after reigning over the UK for record-breaking 70 years.

Retailers will continue to sell their existing stamps featuring the late queen, and be supplied with the new ones when current Royal Mail stocks have run out.

British artist Arnold Machin created an effigy of the queen for decimal coinage in the 1960s, and then designed the definitive stamps bearing her image which became an iconic symbol of the UK around the world.

The new design shows Charles facing left, as all British monarchs have done on stamps since the "Penny Black" was issued as the world's first postage stamp in 1840, under Queen Victoria.

Royal Mail chief executive Simon Thompson said British stamps are unique in not having the country of origin printed on them, "as the image of the monarch is sufficient".

The UK government's 'prevent' programme aims to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. An official review of UK's anti-radicalisation programme is ongoing. The review report is set to be published on Wednesday, and reports suggest the findings are not encouraging. The review is expected to find that officials have been too focused on addressing the 'personal vulnerabilities' of extremists. As per the telegraph, a British daily, experts have opined that the 'prevent' programme is treating terrorism like a mental illness. The review author of the report is expected to flag the 'mischaracterisation' of radicalisation. Officials have seemingly failed to tackle the ideological beliefs behind Islamist extremism. Seven of the 13 terror attacks in the past six years have been carried out by extremists who had been referred to 'prevent'.
