Google’s Bard chatbot, described as an “experimental conversational AI service,” was launched for users in the US and the UK on Tuesday (March 21). The Alphabet Inc-owned tech giant had originally announced Bard last month and said last week that it would integrate generative AI features across the apps in its Workspace productivity suite.

Bard has been designed to respond to written prompts using information sourced from websites and has also been seen as Google’s bid to compete with the viral ChatGPT. While the Google AI is still an “early experiment” the company was “extremely excited…watching how people are using this product in a way that’s boosting their creativity,” said Google employee and product lead for Bard, Jack Krawczyk, as per the Guardian.

“You can use Bard to boost your productivity, accelerate your ideas and fuel your curiosity. You might ask Bard to give you tips to reach your goal of reading more books this year, explain quantum physics in simple terms or spark your creativity by outlining a blog post,” said Google VP of product Sissie Hsiao and VP of research Eli Collins, in a blog post on Tuesday.

House prices in the United Kingdom plunged at the fastest rate in 12 years in January. According to the official numbers released by the Office for National Statistics, higher mortgage prices stressed the housing markets more. However, the authorities have not taken the pandemic years into account.

According to the Land Registry, prices fell 0.6 per cent from December. Furthermore, the following 0.4 per cent plunge in December was the steepest monthly drop since 2011, excluding the pandemic years. There was a 6.3 per cent decline in the price growth. It is low compared to the 9.1 per cent annual rise in December 2022. However, recent figures from mortgage lender Halifax show price recovery.

The Bank of England cut rates to 0.1 per cent in early 2020, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, due to which Britain's housing market took off. The administration provided households with tax breaks on property purchases. The annual house-price inflation was the highest at 14.5 per cent in July 2022.

The property market in England is sluggish as the mortgage costs have doubled to around 4 per cent. In late 2021, the Bank of England raised their rates gradually. According to recent reports, the transactions are decreasing, and annual price growth is condensing.

Furthermore, the market downfall has struck private renters with higher prices. The property market in England witnessed the fastest-growing average rent. According to Office for National Statistics, the growth in average rent was 4.7 per cent in the last 12 months to February since the records started in 2016. The ONS mentioned the market saw a recovery in housing affordability for homebuyers in 2022 while conditions for renters were decreasing. In England, the average home rent is 8.3 times the average full-time wage, down from a high of 9.1 times in 2021.

Even though it was the highest annual decline since records began in 1997, only the ratios returned to the long-term trend. According to the ONS, affordability increased due to lower average property prices in England and Wales for the year ending in September 2022 and wage increases of £1,800.

Stephen Hawking's groundbreaking book ‘A Brief History of Time’ was written from the wrong perspective as per the scientist himself, claims Thomas Hertog, a cosmologist at the KU Leuven University in Belgium and former collaborator of the English scientist. Hertog says that Hawking called him into his chambers in the year 2002 and said, “I have changed my mind. My book, A Brief History of Time, is written from the wrong perspective.” After the announcement, both Hawking and Hertog began working on a new way to better understand the universe. The final output of the duo's brainstorming sessions will be released in the form of a book titled "On the Origin of Time: Stephen Hawking’s final theory" next month. The book title drives inspiration from Charles Darwin's ever-popular "On the Origin of Species". Speaking about the relation, Hertog said while writing the book, both of them realised that physics and biology were much more alike and thus put the two subjects on the 'same footing'. Hertog claims the book is “profoundly Darwinian” in spirit. WATCH | Gravitas: Scientists to create 'lunar time zone' × Releasing five years after Hawking's death, the book will go to print in the UK with Hertog expected to outline the themes discussed in the book at the Cambridge festival lecture, later this month. “Stephen told me he now thought he had been wrong and so he and I worked, shoulder to shoulder, for the next 20 years to develop a new theory of the cosmos, one that could better account for the emergence of life,” said Hertog. The scientist added that Hawking struggled to understand how the universe created conditions so perfectly hospitable for life. It was one of the prominent reasons why the British physicist cast aspersions over his book. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday published his long-awaited tax documents, revealing he paid over $1.2 million (£1 million) in taxes over the last three financial years. Instead of publishing the full account, 10 Downing Street published a summary of his income and tax affairs. Sunak's income totalled £1.9 million in 2021-22 while his tax bill stood at £432,493. Sunak's staggering income included £ 1.6 million in capital gains from a US-based investment fund while earning £330,000 from savings and dividends. In total, Sunak's capital gains income between 2019 and 2022 stood at £3.8 million while the investment income breached the £600,000 mark. The opposition leaders were quick to pounce on Sunak with labour leader Angela Rayner saying Sunak paid less tax than the working people. "(The returns) reveal a tax system designed by successive Tory governments in which the Prime Minister pays a far lower tax rate than working people who face the highest tax burden in 70 years," said Rayner. Meanwhile, Christine Jardine MP, the Liberal Democrat Cabinet Office spokesperson said the timing of the release of the report was suspicious as former PM Boris Johnson was under pressure for his partygate exploits.
