<p>The prime minister said he hoped that those who were affected would now "feel proud parts of the veteran community that has done so much to keep our country safe".</p>

<p>The apology from the prime minister was prompted by the findings of a government-commissioned independent review into LGBT veterans who served in the military between 1967 and 2000.</p>

<p>The report detailed "shocking evidence of a culture of homophobia, and of bullying, blackmail and sexual assaults, abusive investigations into sexual orientation and sexual preference, disgraceful medical examinations, including conversion therapy".</p>

<h2><strong>'Financial reward' sought&nbsp; &nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Terence Etherton, the author of the report recommended that Sunak deliver an apology as also an "appropriate financial award" which should be made to LGBT veterans who were affected by the pre-2000 ban.</p>

<p>Britain lifted the ban only after the European Court of Human Rights rejected argument that the ban was needed to protect the morale and fighting power amongst its troops. The court said that the policy had violated human rights.</p>

<p>Catherine Dixon, former British Army Officer who is now vice-chair at LGBT charity Stonewall called the British government's apology "an important step to achieving justice for those LGBTQ+ people who served in HM Armed Forces and, like me, experienced shame, humiliation and a ruined military career because of our sexuality."</p>

<p>"Many were imprisoned, experienced corrective violence and lived with the stain of criminal convictions because of who they loved and which left some homeless and many unable to work," she added.</p>

<p>Ben Wallace, British Defence Secretary told UK parliament that the report made for "miserable and distressing" reading and that the government had been working through the report's recommendations.</p>

<p>The United States and the United Kingdom on Thursday (June 8) struck a fresh strategic pact underlining the "special relationship" to tackle China, Russia and economic instability. US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak adopted an "Atlantic Declaration" which is aimed at boosting industry ties on defence and renewable energy. The countries have come together in the face of growing competition from China.</p>

<p>Both leader met in a White House summit and discussed Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Artificial Intelligence (AI) which has seen rapid development in recent months.</p>

<p>But Sunak came away empty-handed on Britain's ambitions for a post-Brexit free-trade agreement with Washington, settling instead to tack along with Biden's plan to craft a new green economy through vast industrial subsidies.</p>

<p>"We face new challenges to international stability -- from authoritarian states such as Russia and the People's Republic of China; disruptive technologies; non-state actors; and transnational challenges like climate change," the declaration read.</p>

<p>Leaders of both nations agreed that the world economy was going through biggest challenges since the Industrial Revolution. This is in part driven by AI, which is bringing doomsday warnings about sentient machines wiping out humanity unless there is a co-ordinated response from governments.</p>

<h2><strong>World's first AI summit</strong></h2>

<p>Sunak said that Biden supported his plan to bring together "likeminded" countries for the world's first AI summit in Britain this year. British PM also wants his country to host a future AI regulator.</p>

<p>Yet there are headwinds for Sunak's ambitions, with the United States and European Union already engaged in their own dialogue on an AI code of conduct as industry figures plead for regulation.</p>

<p>"One thing I'm confident won't change is the strength of our partnership, our friendship, and we will put our values front and centre, as we've always done, to deliver for the British and American people," he told Biden.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, Sunak was appointed as the prime minister by the British monarch King Charles III as he scripted history by becoming the first British-Asian to hold the post. A practising Hindu, the 42-year-old Sunak is the nation's youngest leader since 1812.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But there are certainly mixed opinions on Sunak becoming the UK prime minister—some racist remarks have also been made. A video of a British radio show is going viral in which a caller is explaining why a non-white person becoming the PM of the UK is not good.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The caller said: "Can you imagine me becoming the Prime Minister of Pakistan? People of England would like to see someone who looks like them."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now, this gaffe by UK's national broadcaster is quite concerning. In the word cloud, BBC missed some swear words when they appeared on TV screens during its coverage of Downing Street developments.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Britons were asked about their opinion on Sunak becoming prime minister. It appeared when BBC presenter Joanna Gosling asked: "How would you describe Rishi Sunak in one word?"&nbsp;</p>

<p>The word cloud, which was created by polling research company Savanta ComRes, contained the words "rich", "capable", "okay", "good", "clever", etc. But some swear words were also displayed.</p>

<p>Mr Sunak was referred to as a "c**t" and "t**t", but the graphic censored part of the word.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from some positive words like "smart", "intelligent", "safe" and "strong", the word cloud also had words like "boring", "slimy", "idiot", "backstabbing" and "liar".&nbsp;</p>
