A crowd of demonstrators swamped the streets of Pretoria and Cape Town in South Africa to protest against Uganda's new controversial law targeting the LGBTQ plus community. Uganda lawmakers passed a law that would make it illegal for people to openly claim that they belong to the LGBTQ plus community.

South Africa: Protesters march in Cape Town and Pretoria against Uganda's 'anti-gay law'

A day after Uganda's parliament passed a law to penalise homosexuality, the U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken took to Twitter and said that the move would undermine human rights of all Ugandans. While Blinken called out Uganda's 'anti-homosexuality act', the Biden administration was also commented on Florida's proposed expansion of ban on teaching young children about sexual orientation and gender identity issues, calling it 'completely, utterly wrong'.

"The Anti-Homosexuality Act passed by the Ugandan Parliament yesterday would undermine fundamental human rights of all Ugandans and could reverse gains in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We urge the Ugandan Government to strongly reconsider the implementation of this legislation," Anthony Blinken said.

The Florida Department of Education’s new proposal, which would not require legislative approval, would extend the ban through the 12th grade.

The proposal drew swift criticism on Wednesday from Democrats and LGBTQ rights activists, with White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre calling the proposal "completely, utterly, wrong."

What is Florida's 'Don't say gay' move?

The proposed rule is the latest move by the administration of Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who is expected to seek his party’s 2024 nomination for president, to limit or prohibit instruction on topics conservatives consider inappropriate for the state’s classrooms.

Last year, DeSantis signed a Republican-backed measure that banned classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity for students in kindergarten through third grade. Critics denounced what they dubbed the "don’t say gay" bill.

Under the rule, teachers could face disciplinary action if they discuss sexual orientation or gender identity outside of mandated curriculum or health courses that parents have been briefed on and given the option to keep their children out of class for those lessons.

“There is no reason for instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity to be part of K-12 public education. Full stop,” DeSantis spokesperson Bryan Griffin tweeted on Wednesday.

The state Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the rule at its April 19 meeting.

After Uganda's anti-homosexuality act, Florida's 'don't say gay' move to amplify further

Uganda's anti-gay bill passed on Tuesday is concerning and represents one of the most extreme actions taken against the LGBTQ community in the world, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said on Wednesday.

Uganda Anti-Gay Bill: People who identify as gay in Uganda risk life in prison after Parliament passed a new bill to crack down on Homosexual activities. It also includes the death penalty in certain cases. That move has drawn various reactions. White House warned members of Uganda’s parliament that sanctions restricting them from doing business with the US could be on the way for those responsible for the passage of the law. The United Nations has termed it a deeply troubling development. Even as the world takes strides towards inclusivity, Uganda on Tuesday passed a law criminalising identification as LGBTQ. The new law, as per Reuters, gives authorities broad new powers against Ugandans who already face legal discrimination and mob violence. As per the rights group Human Rights Watch, the law appears to be the first to outlaw the mere identification as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer.

The new Ugandan law, in addition to the previous ban, forbids the promotion and abetment of homosexuality. Additionally, it prohibits "conspiracy to engage in homosexuality", reports Reuters.

Under the new law, anyone found in violation of the bans risks steep penalties, including death for so-called aggravated homosexuality, while gay sex is punishable by life in prison. Here, according to the law, aggravated homosexuality refers to gay sex with "victims" below the age of 18 years or sex by an HIV-positive person.

Identifying as LGBTQ in Uganda can lead to life in jail and even death sentence

Uganda's Parliament passes an anti-LGBTQ bill. It awaits the President's approval. The bill includes harsh punishments like life imprisonment and death sentences. The bill is being criticized worldwide. 30 (including Uganda) out of 54 countries of Africa already consider being gay a crime. Human Right activists are highly criticizing the bill.

The United States on Wednesday expressed concerns about Uganda's law criminalising identification as LGBTQ and said that it represents one of the most extreme actions taken against the LGBTQ community in the world. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby warned Uganda that imposing the controversial law could invite possible economic "repercussions." Speaking to the press, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said that if the Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA) is enacted, it would threaten Uganda's fight against HIV-AIDS, and deter tourism, and investment in Uganda.

In a video that has been captured during the study, Fiona can be seen picking a leaf, examining it and later shoving it under her mother Sutherland's nose momentarily, before snatching it back.

“She’s not offering it for food. She doesn’t want her mum to do anything," said Prof Katie Slocombe, a co-author of the study.

"She just wants them to look at it together, and be like ‘Oh, cool, nice!’," added Slocombe.

The behaviour, previously thought to be unique to humans has intrigued scientists who believe that Chimpanzees might be much closer to humans than we had earlier predicted.

Scientists ruled out alternative explanations for the behaviours such as food sharing and playing or initiating grooming. They said if the motive was to share food, Fiona would have relinquished the possession of the lone leaf but in this case, she did not.

The team of researchers have only recorded one instance of such behaviour but they are optimistic that similar examples can be found in future or previously collected footage.

An Indian businessman was shot dead allegedly by a police constable in Kisoro town of Uganda, local media reported.

The deceased was identified as Kuntaj Patel. He was 24. He used to own a hardware shop in Kisoro District.

The Daily Monitor newspaper reported that 21-year-old Elioda Gumizamu, a police constable from the Field Force Unit (FFU), shot Patel and fled from the site before getting arrested.

The incident happened on October 27 around 2 pm. Gumizamu, along with other aides—who are yet to be tracked— walked into Patel’s shop and shot the Indian businessman in the chest, Elly Maate, the regional police spokesperson, said.

One of the eyewitnesses, Gilbert Mwiseneza, a casual worker at Patel’s shop, told the newspaper that he and his boss were attending to a client when the armed officer aimed the gun at his boss.

“After the shooting, he (policeman) tried to run away but he was intercepted by people who gave a chase,” Mwiseneza was quoted as saying.

Subsequently, Patel was taken to St Francis hospital in Mutolere in Kisoro District, where succumbed to his injuries hours later.

Gumizamu has been charged with murder and is currently detained at Kisoro police station for interrogation to find out the motive.

Eleven people lost their lives in school for the blind in Uganda in early hours of Tuesday (October 25). Those dead include mostly children. The fire tore through a dormitory in which pupils were sleeping.

"The cause of the fire is currently unknown but so far 11 deaths as a result of the fire have been confirmed while six are in critical conditions and admitted (to hospital)," the Uganda Police Force said on Twitter.

The tragedy occurred at 1 am (2200 GMT Monday) at the Salama School for the Blind in the Mukono district, east of the capital Kampala. The police have launched an investigation.

"Most of the dead are children at the school and our sympathies go to the parents," Internal Affairs Minister General Kahinda Otafiire told AFP.
He said the school has been cordoned off as a "crime scene" and vowed that there would be a full investigation.

"As government we shall go to the root cause of the fire and if there are any culprits they will be apprehended and the law will take its course," he added.

Images broadcast on Ugandan television showed a charred but still largely intact building where the fire broke out, its window frames and door blackened and the corrugated roof damaged.

Forensic teams were seen in white protective gear at the school, while grieving parents gathered nearby.

Uganda: 11, including children, die in fire at school for blind

Amid a rise in cases after the Ebola outbreak in Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni imposed a lockdown on two districts on Saturday. Restrictions have been imposed on personal travel, a night curfew has been ordered in the districts, which are at the epicentre of the outbreak. The authorities have also closed public places.

Now, the news agency Reuters has reported citing government sources that the United States sent Gilead Sciences' remdesivir and Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc's experimental Ebola antibody drug MBP134 to Uganda last week.

The aid is aimed at safeguarding the healthcare workers who are currently responding to the outbreak. Authorities have also revealed that around 60 people are infected and at least 44 dead because of the virus.

Remdesivir is the undisclosed monoclonal antibody that had been given to healthcare workers. The information was disclosed by the health minister of Uganda, Jane Ruth Aceng, at a meeting of African region health officials last week in Kampala. Aceng apparently mentioned the US shipments of the medicines. Remdesivir has been widely used as a (coronavirus) COVID-19 treatment.

Joel Montgomery, who is the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s chief of the viral special pathogens branch and incident manager for the outbreak, said that providing treatment that protects the lives of healthcare workers could be central to containing the outbreak.

Montgomery said, "If healthcare workers start to fall ill and die, it's going to negatively impact the response." He had just returned from a trip to Uganda.

It's all about Africa's preparedness to fight and control diseases that periodically pop-up. The deadly Ebola virus has re-emerged but governments and health officials are confident that they are better equipped to battle the spread of this new but mild strain.

World of Africa: Ebola outbreak in Uganda

East Africa was thrown into a whirlwind following the announcement by Ugandan health authorities of an Ebola outbreak that also claimed the lives of several people in the country's west of the capital, Kampala. New Uganda Sudan Ebola-virus outbreak means FDA-licensed vaccine for Zaire ebolavirus cannot be used that means that virologists and scientists have to go back to the drawing board and come up with a stronger and more efficient shield to this virus that has been classified as lethally fatal.

World of Africa | Return of Uganda's 'immoral' festival

An outbreak of Ebola virus disease has been declared in Uganda, the country's health ministry and the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday.

The ministry said on Twitter that there had been a confirmed Ebola case in the central Mubende district, a 24-year-old man who showed symptoms and later died.

The WHO's Africa office said in a statement that the case was of the relatively rare Sudan strain after Ugandan health authorities investigated six suspicious deaths in the district this month.

"There are currently eight suspected cases who are receiving care in a health facility," WHO Africa said, adding it was helping Uganda's health authorities with their investigation and deploying staff to the affected area.

Ebola is believed to be carried by fruit bats from the Pteropodidae species, but once an Ebola epidemic has started, the transmission of the virus between humans occurs via body fluid and needles contaminated by infected secretions.

A prominent non-governmental organisation (NGO) that advocates for LGBT rights has been banned by the Uganda government.

Sexual Minorities Uganda’s (SMUG) operations were halted with immediate effect for “operating illegally” in the East African country, Stephen Okello, who heads a government agency that regulates NGOs, said in a statement shared with Reuters on Saturday.

They said that SMUG had failed to register its name with the National Bureau for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) properly.

The group, however, criticised the order calling it a "clear witch hunt" by the government against LGBT Ugandans.

"This is a clear witch hunt rooted in systematic homophobia, fuelled by anti-gay and anti-gender movements," BBC quoted SMUG's director Frank Mugisha, who is a gay Ugandan activist, as saying.

He slammed the government for treating Uganda's LGBT members as second-class citizens and accused the officials of trying to erase their existence completely.

Homosexual relationships are illegal in Uganda, and they are a punishable offence. A person charged for “unnatural offences” is punished with up to life in prison.

Earlier, President Yoweri Museveni, who has been ruling since 1986, had described homosexuality in Uganda as an example of the West’s "social imperialism" in Africa.

In a 2016 interview to CNN, he called gay people "disgusting."

The reason to ban the operations of the advocacy group stems from SMUG's name itself.

The NGO acknowledged in a statement that it had tried to register with authorities in 2012, but the application was rejected because SMUG's full name was considered "undesirable."

Smug, since its establishment in 2004, has campaigned for LGBT rights in Uganda by promoting access to health services and supporting members of the community to live openly.

The action against SMUG also comes in the wake of a series of campaign run by it the NGO which as vocally criticised anti-gay speeches delivered by Ugandan politicians - including in the run up to national elections in 2021.
