Let me ask you a question.

How would you feel if one morning you woke up and your favourite coffee jar was empty when you filled it to the brim the night before?

Feels bad right..?

Well in Uganda, this is happening on the coffee farms. Farmers are tackling a challenge: coffee theft.

But why?

In the lush landscapes of Uganda, coffee farmers are facing an unprecedented challenge and that is theft. As global coffee prices soar, so does the risk for those who grow this vital crop.

Coffee theft in Uganda has reached alarming levels this year. According to two major farming associations, the thefts have hit unprecedented levels.

And the root cause is soaring coffee prices.

Global prices for robusta coffee, a variety favoured for instant drinks, have hit their highest levels since the 1970s.

This price spike has driven up farm-gate prices in Uganda, where unshelled robusta beans known locally as kiboko, have surged by up to 65 per cent, this year reaching a record 7,000 shillings or $1.89 per kilogram.

The rising coffee prices have made farms highly attractive targets for thieves. This surge in theft has created significant insecurity among farmers.

While exact statistics on coffee theft are scarce, farming associations report a sharp increase compared to previous years. The police and government have yet to publish comprehensive data. But the trend is very clear.

Food and beverage theft is becoming a global issue. Last year, over 20 per cent of all stolen products worldwide were food and drink items, up from 17 per cent in 2022.

In response, Ugandan farmers are turning to innovative security measures. Some are employing night guards, installing fencing, and even using bees to deter thieves. The buzzing hives are meant to scare off would-be robbers, adding a layer of protection.

The impact of theft extends beyond immediate loss. Thieves often strip beans from trees which damages the branches and reduces future productivity.

Additionally, quality suffers when unripe cherries are stolen which affects both farm income and the market. The government aims to boost coffee production to 20 million bags by 2030, up from less than 7 million now.

However, theft could undermine these efforts and deter farmers from investing in their crops.

Uganda sentenced an Islamic State-linked group member to 10 years over a thwarted terror attack on the funeral of a top army commander three years ago, an official confirmed to AFP on Tuesday. Rashid Katumba arrested in August 2021 was in possession of explosives in the northern town of Pader on the eve of the funeral for Major General Paul Lokech, nicknamed the "Lion of Mogadishu". President Yoweri Museveni blamed the plot on the Islamic State-linked Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which emerged in Uganda in 1996 but has been active in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo for decades. The International Crimes Division of Uganda's high court handed down the sentences for Katumba, as well as two other defendants Luyenjje Najjimu and Arafat Jamil Kiyemba in the capital Kampala on August 23. "Upon their own plea of guilty, Katumba was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in jail" for his involvement in the attempted funeral attack, Jacquelyn Okui, spokeswoman for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, told AFP Tuesday.
Uganda claimed their first ever T20 World Cup win with a three-wicket victory over Papua New Guinea at Providence Stadium on Wednesday in a low-scoring but tense encounter. The African side bowled out PNG for 77 and after struggling at 26-5 in reply, reached the target in 18.2 overs with Riazat Ali Shah top-scoring with 33.

Riazat put on a crucial sixth wicket partnership of 35 with Juma Miyagi (13) which effectively won the game for the tournament debutants. But PNG will rue the moment that Riazat, on eight, was dropped by Charles Amini, who misjudged a relatively simple catch.

The Pacific Islanders had their work cut out trying to defend such a low total but were also undone in part by some loose bowling, conceding 15 wides. Uganda's president Yoweri Museveni, has promoted his son Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba to head the military. The 49-year-old's promotion comes amid a major cabinet reshuffle in which five ministers were sacked. In power since 1986, Museveni has denied speculation that he is grooming his only son as his successor. Gen. Kainerugaba is a controversial figure, becoming increasingly involved in the political arena, in breach of military protocols.

A Ugandan minister has courted controversy for calling those who have died of hunger in the African country "idiots". Henry Okello Oryem, the state minister for foreign affairs made the tone-deaf comment.

Oryem argued that people should utilise Uganda's favourable climate and fertile land by growing food for themselves.

"It's only an idiot, a real idiot, that can die of hunger in Uganda," Oryem told the NTV Uganda television channel.

"If you work hard, there is land in Uganda. The climate is right in spite [of] climate change. If you make a double effort to make sure that you go out in the morning, you till your land, you plant the seeds, you maintain your plantation, surely, how do you fail then to get food?"

The comments sparked outrage immediately, with Moses Aleper, a legislator for Chekwii County attacking Oryem for his insensitivity.

"I'm from one of the most productive parts of Karamoja where there is adequate rain and we produce food. But in situations where the weather fails us, the weather vagaries set in, we definitely fail to get food. And normally people definitely get famine and eventually hunger strikes," he told BBC.

Notably, Oryem's comments came days after Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni addressed the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) delegates and said the disturbing images depicting death from starvation in the country did not accurately portray the overall situation across the African continent.

“When you are out there, you may get stereotypes that we have no food, but we are dying from food here. Those images you see are not representative of all of Africa," said Museveni.

If you make a double effort to make sure that you go out in the morning, you till your land, you plant the seeds, you maintain your plantation, surely, how do you fail then to get food?" The comments sparked outrage immediately, with Moses Aleper, a legislator for Chekwii County attacking Oryem for his insensitivity.
