<p>Now her husband, actor Akshay Kumar has come to her rescue. The actor has sponsored bio-toilets on the Juhu Beach.&nbsp; Akshay's film 'Toilet: Ek Prem Katha' addressed the importance of building public loos and tried to spread awareness against open defecation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Akshay has teamed up with Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray and spend around 10 lakh for installing public toilets on Juhu and Versova beaches. &nbsp;The toilets have bio-digesters so there will be no stench on the beach and it will help in keeping the area clean.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A small town man from Tamil Nadu,Arunanchalam&nbsp;Muruganantham runs a factory, producing low-cost sanitary napkins. This initiative was not a money-making-idea. It was rather a step to get involved in the sphere shared by females; it had helped him to understand the pain of his wife, sister, and mother goes through while bleeding each month. Of course, the ride was no less than a roller coaster. Belonging to a conservative family, talking about menstruation with his own wife seemed like a sin. Running away from the judgemental eyes finally landed him in a medical college where he collected the used sanitary napkins. His moral never dropped even for a second because he had realised that menstruation was shrouded with the blind superstitious belief which is harmful to the entire female section. He had understood why men are unaware of the female biological phenomenon. He had understood that women of the society had been living a tough life all alone and needed proper hygienic sanitation during menstruation.</p>

<p>Taking inspiration from Arunachalam Muruganantham, writer/producer Twinkle Khanna along with husband Akshay Kumar, took the initiative further. Although the small town guy had gained his fame long before, Akshay Kumar made him India&#39;s &#39;Padman&#39;. This effort was made to inculcate in the society that menstruation is no evil spirit, and is as natural as peeing, which needs to be sanitised properly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Giving Akshay Kumar the lead role in the film Padman was the right decision. Akshay, after all, starred in another taboo-breaking film &ndash; Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, and the actor is considered as an epitome of change in society. The film started off with a decent earning of 10 Cr, 13 Cr, and 16 Cr on the first three days of release. However, the film has seen with a considerable slowdown in the second week.</p>

<p>But the point is not how big hit the movie was at the box office. Rather, the impact of the movie in our personal lives needs to be analysed. Since I had expected a lot more viewership to this &lsquo;breaking-the-stereotype-movie<wbr />&rsquo;, which actually didn&#39;t turn out likewise, I ended up conducting a survey asking what people know/think about menstruation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>From the responses of people, I realised that some have been hesitant in watching this film with family. A father and daughter might have felt embarrassed, or the son and the mother, or possibly a sister and a brother. To my shock, few men had answered &lsquo;I don&rsquo;t know what is menstruation&rsquo;, &lsquo;women bleed&rsquo;, &lsquo;Its women&rsquo;s personal problem, why should I know&rsquo;, &lsquo;women are Apavitra (profane) while bleeding&rsquo;, &lsquo;my wife and daughter don&rsquo;t tell me their problem regarding menstruation because of family customs&rsquo;.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is disheartening because blood excreted during menstruation is actually what we all are made of. Had the blood been flowed in sewage even after conceiving the fetus, no human would have taken birth. Thus, if the women are profane during the course of menstruation, I believe we all are profane too.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The entire society needs to understand that although it is the woman who bleeds, the course of menstruation is to be dealt by the entire society. Not that men should start to bleed, but just as in pregnancy the husband has a very important responsibility of taking care of her wife. Similarly, while the wife, sister, daughter or mother is bleeding, men should play an empathetic role. The role of not giving her a judgemental nasty look, the role of sympathising her, the role of comforting and proving her, the role of becoming a helping hand instead of shunning her away simply by saying &#39;it happens every month, get used to it&#39;.&nbsp;</p>

Akshay Kumar's 'PadMan' gets a good start; earns over Rs 40 crores within three days of its release

<p>A case of plagiarism has been filed against Akshay Kumar&rsquo;s<em> PadMan</em> after Mumbai based writer Ripu Daman Jaiswal alleged that large parts of the film have been plagiarised from his script.</p>

<p>Jaiswal had tweeted that 11 scenes from the film were copied from his script based on Arunachalam Muruganantham&rsquo;s life.</p>

A case of plagiarism has been filed against Akshay Kumar’s PadMan after Mumbai based writer Ripu Daman Jaiswal alleged that large parts of the film have been plagiarised from his script. Jaiswal had tweeted that 11 scenes from the film were copied from his script based on Arunachalam Muruganantham’s life. Around two months back, Jaiswal had posted on Facebook, "One and a half years ago, I had written and registered a film based on the works of Arunachalam Muruganantham and Saati biodegradable sanitary pads. Have you heard about them? Yup, Arunachalam Muruganantham is the guy who had made low cost sanitary pads for rural women. I had registered the film on 5th of December 2016 from SCREEN WRITER ASSOCIATION and sent to Ryan Stephan (Karan johar's production -- Creative head) and personally to Vikram Aditya Motwane. And you know what happened? After ten days on 16th of December 2016, I heard the news that Mrs. Twinkle Khanna revealed that her production is making a film based on his life, starring AKSHAY KUMAR," Jiaswal’ post read. “Recently, the PADMAN trailer released, and most of the scenes has been taken from the summary I had sent to MR. And <em>PadMan</em>, despite its mildly over-bearing, holier than thou tone, doesn&rsquo;t waste a single moment to drive home a very important point that there is an urgent need to spread awareness around menstrual health.</p>

<p>Based on the real-life story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, <em>PadMan</em> has Akshay Kumar playing a middle-school dropout Lakshmikant Chauhan who despite his limited school knowledge is an innovator. In love with his wife Gayatri, he finds various ways to make her feel comfortable. He invents a small chopping device so that Gayatri(Radhika Apte) doesn&rsquo;t tear up while cutting onions, he adds a wooden chair at the back of his bicycle so that she can sit comfortably. And similarly gets perturbed to see her live in isolation every month for five days when she gets her periods and use&nbsp;cloth instead of sanitary napkins.</p>

<p>While Lakshmi, as a thoughtful husband, wants to break the taboo around menstruation, the women in his house are visibly scandalized when he offers them a pad that is made by him. The film then traces the maverick innovator&#39;s journey of a village man simply concerned about his wife&rsquo;s health to a visionary who shows the world how to make cheaper sanitary napkins.</p>

<p><em>PadMan</em> doesn&rsquo;t waste too much time in addressing the core theme of the film and shows Lakshmi as the practical man trying to break taboos around menstruation, the film trudges on till the interval and often sounds a bit preachy. Gauri, Lakshmi&rsquo;s wife, basically represents all the stereotypes while Lakshmi represents liberal thinking and their scenes, after a point, become monotonous with Lakshmi more or less harping the same thing as Gauri keeps defying him meekly.</p>

<p>Unlike other films, <em>PadMan </em>picks up the pace in the second half where, after relentless persuasion, Lakshmi finally cracks the code of making perfect, low-cost sanitary napkins. A chance encounter with Pari(Sonam Kapoor), an idealist, activist whose father is an IIT professor, helps him take his innovation to Delhi and even win awards. The scenes where Pari and Lakshmi together convince other women of the village to not only use his low-cost pads but also mobilize them to create such pads on their own in smaller factories are truly inspiring. Some of the film&rsquo;s brightest moments lie in the way Pari, an MBA graduate, and Lakshmi, mobilizes women folk to become self-reliant.</p>

<p>The film is tailor made for Akshay Kumar and he shines throughout. He may appear too urban in the beginning of the film, but his simpleton act is ultimately convincing and endearing. A scene has Kumar delivering a long monologue in broken English and for an actor who is well versed with the language in real life, Kumar manages to pull off the scene with utmost conviction, with not a single false not. Also, the scene where Kumar explains to a bunch of dignitaries how his innovation works with hand movements, its pure joy to watch. Kumar, over the past decade, has balanced formula films and author-backed roles with great aplomb and PadMan will remain one of his career&rsquo;s high point. His Lakshmi is tad irritating, mad, simple and above all a visionary. And Kumar serves as the perfect poster boy for Make In India campaign with this role.</p>

<p>Sonam Kapoor, a young bright do-gooder who helps Lakshmi learn how &lsquo;to fly&rsquo; is also perfect in her role. Kapoor, who has evolved as an actress over the past years, plays a catalyst of sorts and delivers a convincing performance. Perhaps the most conventional character in the film that of Radhika Apte&#39;s who as the conservative housewife grappling with a very liberal husband delivers a commendable performance. Known for her acting prowess, Radhika&rsquo;s role is perhaps the toughest and anyone could have easily hammed. But Radhika&rsquo;s restraint performance makes her Gayatri look innocent, vulnerable and emotional. Even though you know that she ticks all stereotypes and plays to the gallery &ndash; you may still empathise with her as she stares helplessly at her husband&#39;s maverick ideas.</p>

The detailing is a bit too much to take. But maybe it is meant for an audience which needs to be spoon-fed about the benefits of menstrual hygiene and which is why R Balki keeps the narrative simple and linear. The only glitch in the entire story is an unnecessary romantic track that is introduced in the second half which sort of deviates the story for a few minutes.</p>

<p>Amit Trivedi&rsquo;s music blends in the narrative perfectly but none of the songs really stand out. They are treated literally as a tool to over-explain the story.</p>

It may appear a bit preachy, it may oversimplify things, but it should be lauded for bringing the country&rsquo;s attention to menstruation. For women, it is a story that all too familiar- some of the privileged lot may not identify with the film but surely they can sympathise with those who cannot afford expensive sanitary pads or those who go through various archaic rituals every month because of periods. More importantly,<em> PadMan</em> serves to a greater audience and enables a discussion which &ndash; if not anything else- is a good start towards spreading more awareness. Never mind how the story unfolds on screen, it ultimately serves its purpose and is&nbsp;for a greater good.</p>

The #PadManChallenge- as it is called- attempts to break the taboo around menstruation and of course, promote Akshay Kumar&#39;s new film <em>PadMan</em> which narrates the story of Arunachalam Muruganantham and how he made sanitary napkins affordable and available to people at the grassroot&nbsp;level.&nbsp;<br />

The <em>PadMan </em>challenge, despite being a PR exercise, has surely opened up a discussion on a topic, which for centuries was kept discreet and hush-hush. Celebrities taking part in such a challenge has not only encouraged many others common people to participate but has also led to discussions at homes and offices about menstruation for the time- something that has been considered a taboo for so many years now.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But the social media campaign has also been called out by many as superficial and simply a marketing gimmick to promote a film. Stand-up comic and writer Supriya Joshi, in a sarcastic post on Facebook, has shared that how pointless it is to pose with a pad.&nbsp;<br />

I immediately ran to my sanitary napkin </em><em>stash,</em><em> but found I had run out of them. Instead, I saw my mom, dad, grandmother and my building&rsquo;s secretary posing with them and taking pictures. I asked them what they are doing with my pads, and they said, &ldquo;shut up silly girl, we&rsquo;re taking part in a movement that will change the course of history. We&rsquo;re going to make periods a taboo a thing of the past! The Padman Challenge will empower women! Don&rsquo;t forget to use the hashtag otherwise you&rsquo;re not empowering anybody!!!&rdquo; I felt so empowered and inspired and I wanted to do the challenge too, but at this time everyone had thrown away the opened pads and I continued to bleed through my clothing. Trust me guys it&rsquo;s the best feeling to not have access to pads when you&rsquo;re bleeding and the Padman challenge is all that is needed to </em><em>destigmatise</em><em> a woman&rsquo;s period. Kudos to </em><em>champion</em><em> of all causes Akshay Kumar and his amazing marketing team for championing this cause!</em></p>

<p>The irony of the situation is that while more people are openly talking about menstruation and menstrual hygiene thanks to the #PadManChallenge, the fact still remains that sanitary pads are a luxury item that cannot be accessed by one and all.&nbsp;<br />

Sure, there is more awareness now and it is heartening to see both men and women engage in dialogue about menstruation, but the campaign doesn&#39;t serve a greater purpose. While we pose with pads for Instagram and Facebook posts, millions of girls are still using rags during menstruation which is dangerous and unhygienic.<br />
<br />
Many have also criticised Bollywood celebrities for not speaking out or campaigning for the removal of 12% tax that is levied on sanitary napkins. Or the fact that this whole excercise is wasting some very expensive pads.</p>

As many of you know, I have PCOS, so to get your period is such an amazing feeling. I immediately ran to my sanitary napkin stash, but found I had run out of them. Instead, I saw my mom, dad, grandmother and my building’s secretary posing with them and taking pictures. I asked them what they are doing with my pads, and they said, “shut up silly girl, we’re taking part in a movement that will change the course of history. We’re going to make periods a taboo a thing of the past! The Padman Challenge will empower women! Don’t forget to use the hashtag otherwise you’re not empowering anybody!!!” I felt so empowered and inspired and I wanted to do the challenge too, but at this time everyone had thrown away the opened pads and I continued to bleed through my clothing. <p>Actor Akshay Kumar on Monday said that he wanted to work in socially conscious films for a long time but now has the financial support to take up such projects.<br />

The actor along with wife Twinkle Khanna, director R Balki, Radhika Apte and Arunachalam Muruganantham, whose life and initiative of making affordable sanitary inspired the film <em>Padman</em>, was in the city to promote the film.<br />

<p>National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) on Wednesday issued a notice to real estate giant Supertech Limited seeking a response on why money invested by homebuyers in its luxury residential project in Noida should not be refunded to them due to inordinate delay in giving possession.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Actress Twinkle Khanna, who had featured in the project&#39;s advertisements, has also been issued notice for allegedly promoting the project and misleading buyers to invest in the luxury project.<br />
<br />
The court passed the order on a petition filed by seven flat-buyers who sought a refund of their money from Supertech as the real estate company had failed to provide possession of the flats in a given time.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The petitioners made Twinkle Khanna a party in the case and accused her of misleading buyers. &quot; She has not only lent her name to the project but actively participated in luring the flat buyers by openly declaring that the project has been masterminded by her. She is the architect and interior designer of the project. She advocated selling of the project and flat and thus she is also a service provider and the deficiency of service is also writ large on her part,&quot; the petition said.&nbsp;<br />

Akshay Kumar and wife Twinkle Khanna are celebrating Khanna's birthday in Cape Town with close friends. <p>Pad Man has been described as a movie about a superhero who does not have superhero powers or wears a cape&nbsp;-- but who kicked off India&#39;s sanitary pad revolution.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The movie is inspired by Arunachalam Muruganantham, also known as India&rsquo;s &ldquo;Menstrual Man&rdquo;.</p>

<p>The school dropout-turned-welder invented a machine that makes inexpensive, sterilised sanitary pads, enabling low-income women to launch local businesses making and selling pads.</p>

Holidaying in South Africa, Akshay Kumar understands what happiness is

<p>Twinkle Khanna, one of the producers of &nbsp;Padman, said her actor-husband Akshay Kumar was not the first choice to play Arunachalam Muruganantham in the film.</p>

<p>Directed by R Balki, <em>Padman</em>&nbsp;revolves around Muruganantham, a social activist from Tamil Nadu, who revolutionised the concept of menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating a low-cost sanitary napkin machine.&nbsp;When asked if Akshay was her first choice, Twinkle, said, &quot;No. R Balki convinced me that Akshay should do this part.&quot;</p>

<p>When prodded further as to who she thought could have played the role when the film was being conceptualised, Twinkle quipped, &quot;Are you trying to create trouble in my marriage now?&quot;</p>

<p>Akshay joked, &quot;You already said that now (I was not your first choice for the film), there is already a problem.&quot;</p>
