Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to a new low, leaving Republicans with an uphill battle ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. With rising living costs adding to voter frustration, the president’s unpopularity is becoming a growing concern for his party.A Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll puts Trump’s approval at 33 per cent, while 66 per cent of Americans disapprove of his performance. More than half of all respondents, 52 per cent, said they strongly disapprove of the president. The numbers are also reflected in the congressional race. Democrats now hold an eight-point lead over Republicans among registered and likely voters in the contest for the House of Representatives. In July, their lead was three points among registered voters.
The cost of living is catching up with Trump
Trump’s promise to improve the economy is running into a problem: many Americans say they are worse off than before he returned to office. His approval rating on the economy has fallen to 28 per cent, down from 33 per cent in July and 49 per cent at the same point in the 2018 midterm campaign. The poll found that 48 per cent of Americans feel their finances have taken a hit since Trump returned to the White House in 2025. No president has recorded a higher figure on this measure in Washington Post-ABC polling since 1986.Fuel prices are adding to the frustration. Before the US launched military action against Iran in February, 71 per cent of respondents said gasoline was affordable. The latest poll shows the opposite, with 71 per cent now saying it is unaffordable. Groceries, healthcare and home energy are also putting pressure on household budgets.
Iran war adds to Trump’s political troubles
Dissatisfaction with the president is also shaping voters’ preferences for the next Congress. Asked whether they preferred Democrats to check Trump or Republicans to back his agenda, 58 per cent of registered voters chose the Democrats. Just 39 per cent wanted a Republican Congress supporting the president.Trump also faces widespread opposition to the war with Iran. Sixty-five per cent of respondents said military action was a mistake, while 68 per cent disapproved of Trump’s handling of US allies.Yet a Democratic advantage in national polling does not guarantee victory in individual races. Republicans still have a fundraising edge, and turnout could change the picture considerably.Democratic voters are currently more likely to say they are certain to vote than Republicans, 75 per cent to 67 per cent. For Republicans, the challenge is to turn around voter sentiment before November 3. The poll does not predict the outcome of individual races, but the combination of Trump’s low approval rating, economic dissatisfaction and Democrats’ lead in the House contest points to a difficult campaign for the party defending its narrow majority.

Trump's second term sees near-record-low approval rating, worse than any new president since WWII

A recent CNN poll conducted by SSRS has revealed that US President Joe Biden continues to reel under a widespread negative perception among the general public, with a record 46 per cent of registered voters saying that the 80-year-old president would be worse than any Republican presidential nominee.

However, the survey revealed that there was no clear leader if a Biden-Trump rematch occurs, even as the 45th dominates the GOP primary.

Biden’s approval ratings have remained miserably low since he announced his re-election bid earlier this year. At this point ahead of their respective election campaigns, the approval ratings of Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton fared better.

Democratic voters vehemently against Biden

The poll revealed that a whopping 67 per cent of Democratic voters wished they had an alternative to Joe Biden. However, it is still below the high of 75 per cent noted last summer.

Interestingly, around 82 per cent of those seeking the ‘a-better-than-Biden’ option failed to name any specific alternative themselves.

Most of them looked askance upon Biden’s vitality, rather than his handling of the job. While a record 81 per cent of Democratic voters still claimed Biden actually cared about them, a record-high of 63 per cent said Biden no longer inspires confidence.

A record 64 per cent of them also acknowledged that Biden does not have the stamina and sharpness to serve effectively. The same percentage of people also said Biden’s policies failed to improve the US economy.

Overall perception of Biden

As revealed by the CNN poll, his job approval rating now stands at 39 per cent, while 58 per cent of the general public said that Biden’s economic policies turned the situation from bad to worse.

70 per cent of people admitted the country was going in a bad direction, with 51 per cent of them saying the government was not doing enough to solve their problems.

Among the general public, just 28 per cent of the respondents said Biden still inspired confidence. A record-low 26 per cent of voters said Biden lacked stamina and sharpness.

Every three in four people in the US today believe they are concerned about Biden’s age, which might affect his physical and mental competence.

Biden vs Trump

As per the poll, in a possible rematch of Biden and Trump in the presidential polls, 47 per cent of voters would support Trump while 46 per cent of them might vote for Biden.

Biden sees majority support among voters of colour (58 per cent), college graduates (56 per cent), voters younger than 35 (55 per cent) and women (53 per cent), while Trump has majority support among Whites (53 per cent), men (53 per cent) and voters without a college degree (53 per cent).

However, the survey revealed that there was no clear leader if a Biden-Trump rematch occurs, even as the 45th dominates the GOP primary. However, it is still below the high of 75 per cent noted last summer. Interestingly, around 82 per cent of those seeking the ‘a-better-than-Biden’ option failed to name any specific alternative themselves. As Democrats fight in US primaries, Trump's job approval ratings remain in 'upper range'

Donald Trump is poised to take office with the lowest approval ratings of any new president in recent history, but despite a chaotic transition Americans trust the billionaire on one crucial point: jobs.

Since the real estate developer's White House win in November, companies have lined up to announce new factories or jobs in the United States, including air conditioning manufacturer Carrier, Japan's SoftBank, Ford, Fiat Chrysler and Amazon with a headline-grabbing promise to create 100,000 jobs.

The latest additions to the growing list: Wal-Mart announced Tuesday it would invest $6.8 billion in the United States and create 10,000 jobs, General Motors announced $1 billion in new US investments and pledged to create 5,000 new jobs.

Trump, who since his election has wielded a mix of threats and incentives to push an America-first jobs agenda, has been quick to take credit.

"With all of the jobs I am bringing back into the US (even before taking office), with all of the new auto plants coming back into our country and with the massive cost reductions I have negotiated on military purchases and more, I believe the people are seeing 'big stuff,'" he tweeted on Tuesday.

Trump last month denounced the $4 billion price tag on the next presidential plane, which is currently under development, threatened to cancel the order unless the price came down.

Dennis Muilenburg, CEO of the aviation giant Boeing, visited Trump Tower in Manhattan on Tuesday, telling reporters he and Trump were "on the same page" about the cost and value of the jet.

The president-elect's message appears to be resonating.

'Phony election polls'

Sixty-one per cent of Americans believe it is likely the 45th president will be able to create good-paying jobs in economically challenged areas, according to a CNN/ORC poll released on Tuesday.

The same percentage expects Trump to do a good or excellent job in handling the economy, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released the same day.

But this confidence in Trump's ability to boost American job creation stands out as the exception, with polls suggesting an overall distrust of Barack Obama's successor.

Trump is half as popular as Obama was when he was preparing to take office in January 2009, according to the Washington Post-ABC News poll. He is less popular than any other incoming US president of the past four decades, going back to Jimmy Carter.

The latest surveys confirm the findings of other recent polls.

Trump slammed the findings, pointing out that a majority of surveys ahead of his November 8 electoral win predicted victory for his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

"The same people who did the phony election polls, and were so wrong, are now doing approval rating polls. They are rigged just like before," he said on Twitter.
