Dinner in space? Space tourism company plans cosmic meal for a whopping amount

Relations between New Delhi and Male have taken a hit since Muhammad Muizzu took to office last year in the Male. Following the decline of Indian visitors to the island nation experts are now estimating that the Maldives' tourism industry is suffering from a loss of up to $2 billion dollars.

Maldives tourism takes a hit with mass decline in Indian travelers

Recent data from the Maldives tourism ministry has indicated a drop of 33 per cent in number of Indian tourists visiting the country in March 2024, compared to the previous year, reported local media outlet Adhadhu.

In March 2023, over 41,000 Indian tourists visited Maldives, whereas only 27,224 were recorded in March 2024. The primary cause attributed to this decline is India's tourism campaign encouraging citizens to explore the Lakshadweep islands instead of travelling to Maldives.

Until March 2023, India held the position of the second largest source of tourism for Maldives, commanding a 10 per cent market share. However, due to escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations, India has slipped to sixth place, now holding only a six percent market share.

Rise of Chinese tourism

Conversely, China has witnessed a surge in tourist arrivals to Maldives, coinciding with strengthening ties between China and Maldives. With over 54,000 tourist arrivals from China in 2024, it has become the leading source of tourism for Maldives, commanding a significant portion of the market.

The Indonesian resort haven of Bali began imposing a 150,000 rupiah ($10) tax on arriving tourists Wednesday (Feb 14) to preserve the culture of the "Island of Gods", officials said. Tourist-dependent Bali attracts millions of foreign visitors annually and the beach-dotted island is trying to capitalise on its popularity to boost its coffers and protect its tropical allure. "This levy is aimed at the protection of the culture and the environment in Bali," Bali's acting governor Sang Made Mahendra Jaya said at a launch ceremony Monday (Feb 12). The fee will have to be paid electronically through the "Love Bali" online portal and will apply to foreign tourists entering Bali from abroad or from other parts of Indonesia, according to a press release. The levy will not apply to domestic Indonesian tourists.
The city of Tokushima and its prefectural government in Japan have come under the scanner for spending over $2,800 (400,000 yen) in public funds on a sex doll to promote tourism. The government's tourism policy division used the sex doll in a tourist exhibition at the Tokushima Awaodori Airport in 2017.

The doll was utilised as part of the "Awa indigo charm promotion project" in 2017, aimed at promoting the prefecture's traditional indigo-dyeing art. The entire project was commissioned with a budget of $18,900 to the private sector and a promotion area was set up in the corner of the lobby of the airport.

Initially, a pair of cheap mannequins, rented at around $180 per day, were placed in the lobby. However, a few months later, the mannequins disappeared and the sex doll, dressed in an indigo-dyed summer kimono took its place.

Interestingly, the existence of the adult doll came to light in September last year only. Consequently, the prefectural assembly member Atsushi Fukawa requested a citizen's audit in November.

According to the Japanese news outlet Mainichi, a male official in his 40s in charge of the project instructed the contractor to purchase the sex doll to replace the mannequins. The said official visited a sex doll manufacturing and sales company in Osaka with other project stakeholders, including the contractor, to pick out the doll.

Also read: Maldives jittery as ‘Lakshadweep’ remains top trend in India for second consecutive day The Indian prime minister's post received some offensive, racist, xenophobic and derogatory comments from some important Maldivian social media users, in which Indians were targeted at large, as well as Modi. Which Maldivian ministers took a dig at Modi? Among the hate comments shared on social media was one by Maldives’ Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts Mariyam Shiuna, who wrote: “What a clown. The puppet of Israel Mr. Narendra diver with life jacket. #VisitMaldives #SunnySideOfLife”. Shiuna, in the now-deleted post, also compared India to cow dung. Shiuna's fellow deputy minister Malsha Shareef also posted similar derogatory comments against the tourism campaign for Lakshadweep and India. Meanwhile, a member of Maldives' ruling Progressive Party Abdulla Mahzoom Majid also shared an image which was reported to be of Bora Bora islands in French Polynesia and claimed it to be an image of an island resort in the Maldives. “Sun set in Maldives. You won’t see this in Lakshadweep. #Visit Maldives. CC: @narendramodi (sic),” he wrote. How did Maldives react to the social media war? The government of Maldives quickly distanced itself from their comments and the three ministers were immediately suspended. The Maldives government, in a statement, said that it was aware of “derogatory” comments made on social media but stressed the “opinions are personal” and do not represent its views. “The government believes that the freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner, and in ways that do not spread hatred, negativity, and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and its international partners,” it added. How heavily does tourism in Maldives rely on India? As per the media reports, tourism in Maldives is heavily reliant on India and a major part of their income comes from the nation. In 2023, more than 209,000 trips were made by Indian tourists to Maldives which covers 11 per cent of its tourism market, as per the statistics released recently. How did Indians react to the hate remarks for Lakshadweep? However, the derogatory remarks made by the Maldivian officials have angered many Indian holidaymakers, some of whom also shared screenshots of their cancellation of trips to Maldives on social media with the hashtag #BoycottMaldives. Watch: Israel's desalination project to help India's Lakshadweep Islands India's famous personalities, from Bollywood actors to cricket players, also appealed to fans to travel to local destinations instead with the hashtag #ChaloLakshadweep, which means “Let’s go to Lakshadweep”. Such social media campaigns led to a sudden inquiry about vacation visits to the archipelago. Bollywood actors like Akshay Kumar further called the remarks made by Maldivian officials “hateful and racist.” “We are good to our neighbours but why should we tolerate such unprovoked hate? I’ve visited the Maldives many times and always praised it, but dignity first. Let us decide to #ExploreIndianIslands and support our own tourism,” he said. Indian travel sites, which included EaseMyTrip, also decided to boycott Maldives amid the growing tension. EaseMyTrip announced that it has suspended bookings for flights to Maldives. Taking to X, CEO and co-founder of EaseMyTrip Nishant Pitti said, “In solidarity with our nation, @EaseMyTrip has suspended all Maldives flight bookings.” Meanwhile, The Confederation of All India Traders, which is the country's one of the biggest trade bodies, also appealed to members to suspend their business with Maldives. In a statement, the group's Secretary-General Praveen Khandelwal said, “Until the Maldives tender an apology or ensure remedial measures, the trading community in India will refrain from doing business with them.” Meanwhile, Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, in a post on X, called the remarks by officials “unacceptable” and added that the archipelago is committed to “fostering a positive and constructive dialogue with our partners.” (With inputs from agencies)
