During the scorching hot weather, Dubai has come up with a way to enjoy beaches during the summer. The city has opened its beaches during the nighttime with floodlights and lifeguards with night vision binoculars.

As one of the world’s hottest regions, the temperatures in the city rise too high for the beaches during the day amid climate change. According to an official, the idea has gained popularity since last year, with over a million people visiting the beach at night.

Every year, the metropolitan city of about 3.7 million people witnesses temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius with high humidity during the summer season from June to October. This prevents the locals from having outdoor activities during the day.

Locals enjoy the night beach

While the neighbouring region is gripped by the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Dubai locals enjoy nighttime beaches, especially on weekends.

"The temperature drops down in the evening after the sun sets. So, yeah, it's amazing," said Mohammed, 32, from Pakistan, who brought his children to enjoy the night sea without worrying about the burning sun.

"While you're... bathing inside the water, you can see the sand even on your foot and your hands and everything," said Mohammed, who has lived in Dubai for a decade.

The city has over 800 metres of designated beaches that are illuminated with large, bright floodlights, AFP reported. Shark nets have also been installed. The lifeguards, who are positioned 24 hours a day, also use night vision binoculars to keep a watch on the swimmers or kayakers. The authorities are also testing a camera system powered by artificial intelligence that would detect if someone is in distress.

While the locals visit the beach at night to enjoy and relax after work, authorities are using this as an opportunity to promote tourism in the city during summer.

"I believe we are one of the only cities in the world to have such infrastructure on public beaches at night," said Hamad Shaker, an official from the Dubai municipality.

Tourism amid extreme weather

Expats in Dubai used to vacate the city during summer to escape the heat, said Manuela Gutberlet, a tourism researcher at the University of Breda in the Netherlands. However, recent years have seen Dubai become "a year-round urban destination" with over 17 million visitors last year. The city has become a desired location for tourists due to attractions like the world’s tallest building, indoor amusement parks, and massive shopping malls.

However, climate change may harm tourism with extreme weather conditions such as torrential rains during April that disrupted life for several days.

Gutberlet highlighted the need to "adapt quickly to new risks" as such weather events can increase the temperature levels and put off some visitors.

Meanwhile, Frenchman Laziz Ahmed, 77, went to the night beach during his first holiday in the city while visiting relatives.

"During the day, I don't go out much," he said, adding that in the evening "I make up for it".

Bunol, a small Spanish town, sees its population more than double in size at the end of every August. It is because of its annual festival, La Tomatina, a one-hour event. The town is famous around the world for La Tomatina, and this year, the festival was celebrated on 28 August, and the city welcomed 22,000 tourists for the festival. Every year, a large number of people from around the world arrive at the beautiful town along Spain's east coast. Bunol lies just 38 kilometres from Valencia, a well-known city in Spain. The event kicked off at 11 am, and people threw tomatoes at each other and enjoyed the festival. The city got drenched in red. La Tomatina is also known as the world’s biggest food fight. Also Read|The Rings Of Power Season 2 review: A definite improvement from first season| Before the festivities, more than 150,000 kilos of specially prepared tomatoes were delivered in seven huge trucks. Officials stated that food wastage is not a concern, as the tomatoes are not suitable for consumption, but perfect for pelting one another, said the BBC. To attend the one-hour food fight, tourists had to pay a fee of €15 (£12.60), and they were not allowed to throw tomatoes after 12 pm. The festival was free for the residents. People enjoyed swimming in tomato sauce, throwing tomatoes at each other and even making tomato angles during the Spanish festival. North Korea is set to reopen its doors to international tourists, beginning with the city of Samjiyon by December, according to tour operators Koryo tours and KTG. This move ends a four-year hiatus due to the pandemic and could be a crucial step for North Korea’s struggling economy.

North Korea welcomes tourists back

North Korea closed its borders for foreign tourism in the early 2020s, during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly after five years, North Korea will reopen its borders to foreign tourists in the winter this year.

This comes after North Korea started easing its restrictions around the middle of last year. The closing of borders also halted the import of goods leading to food shortages already worsened by the international sanctions due to the country’s nuclear programme.

As per the BBC report, tourists will be allowed to the mountainous northern city of Samjiyon very soon.

BBC quoted Shenyang's KTG Tours as writing on its Facebook page on Wednesday: “So far just Samjiyon has been officially confirmed but we think that Pyongyang and other places will open too!!!”. As per the Beijing-based Koryo Tours, tourists can visit other parts of North Korea in December.

Since early 2024, only tourists from Russia were granted permission to visit North Korea, reflecting the warming ties between the two countries.
Speaking to WION, Cambodian Ambassador Kuong Koy, said these direct flights are the result of concerted efforts by leaders from both countries, especially the civil aviation ministers. Speaking to WION, Cambodian Ambassador Kuong Koy, said these direct flights are the result of concerted efforts by leaders from both countries, especially the civil aviation ministers. Ambassador Kuong Koy expressed his joy, calling this development "a dream come true," highlighting the benefits of increased connectivity, particularly in promoting tourism due to Cambodia's rich heritage of Hindu and Buddhist temples. Cambodia is home to Angkor Wat, recognised as the world's largest religious structure. Built in the early 12th century, the temple was originally dedicated to the Hindu deity Vishnu. Seila Hul, under secretary of state for Cambodia's Ministry of Tourism, anticipated a rise in Indian tourists visiting Cambodia, emphasising the positive impact of these direct flights on bilateral tourism. Chhay Sivlin, President of Cambodia's Tourism Association, echoed this sentiment, stating, "India is rich in culture, and India and Cambodia have similarities in culture. We have Hinduism, and for Hindu people, Cambodia has a lot of opportunity." With flights scheduled four times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday) between Phnom Penh and New Delhi, the direct air links offer convenient options for travellers.

The dispute arose when Alexander, as per accounts, was denied entry to the restaurant for not being a customer while attempting to use it as a shortcut home. Seeking revenge, Alexander allegedly enlisted friends to flood the restaurant with one-star reviews, causing its rating to drop from 4.8 to 3.1 stars, according to the news outlet.

Subsequently, Alexander was arrested by the Central Investigation Bureau at his new Bangkok residence, based on an arrest warrant. Venice has become the first city in the world to introduce an access charge to control the number of tourists trampling over its fragile streets. The system came into effect at 8:30 am local time on Thursday with checks carried out at the city's railway station and other major access points.

In a rare step to control over-tourism, a pilot programme has been launched by the Italian city of Venice according to which the day-trippers will be charged an entry fee of €5 (around $5.35).

The authorities hope that the entry fee will discourage visitors from coming on peak days and turn the city into a more livable place for its dwindling number of residents.

How has Venice prepared to charge its tourists?

The authorities have placed signs which inform the visitors regarding the new requirement for a test phase of 29 days across July. The signs have been placed outside the main train station and other important points of arrival.

Meanwhile, the authorities have trained some 200 stewards to politely inform anyone who is not aware of the fees and the process of downloading a QR code.

The authorities have also set up a kiosk for those who are not equipped with a smartphone. Once the tourists cross the designated entry ports, officials will conduct random checks for QR codes which show that the day-tripper tax has been paid or that they have exempted the bearer.

A fine of €50 ($53) to €300 ($321) will be imposed on the transgressors. The entry fee is applicable only to people who are entering the city between 8:30 am and 4 pm. Those who wish to enter Venice outside of those hours are not required to pay any fees.

Venice's tourism official, Simone Venturini said, "We need to find a new balance between the tourists and residents. We need to safeguard the spaces of the residents, of course, and we need to discourage the arrival of day-trippers on some particular days.”
