But there is one sector within the tech industry which has been rapidly growing without facing any hindrance from the Chinese regulators—dating apps.&nbsp;

According to data.ai, an analytics firm, the number of dating apps have grown exponentially, from 81 in 2017, to 275 in 2022.&nbsp;

Not only that, the number of downloads has also increased, touching thousands and so have in-app purchases.&nbsp;

Last year, dating apps and social media networking sites received over $5.3 billion in investments, up from $300 million in 2019, according to data shared by PitchBook Data, Inc. &nbsp;

However, there is more than just a romantic reason why China appears to have given these dating apps free reign. They also provide a prospect for marriage—a glimmer of hope for Beijing which has been battling low fertility rates and marriage, reports The New York Times.&nbsp;

And for people, who have been grappling with loneliness during the Covid times, these apps provide them virtual sanctuaries to meet new friends, explore hobbies and discuss popular topics.&nbsp;

Zhang Lu, the founder of Soul, a dating app backed by Tencent, told NYT that “loneliness is the core problem we want to solve.” &nbsp;

But many find these dating apps as a platform for meeting new friends than gaining a dating partner. &nbsp;

In a survey conducted by a&nbsp;Chinese research institute&nbsp;in October, 89 per cent of the respondents said they had used a dating app before, with a majority of them saying they wanted to expand their social circles and not to find a partner.&nbsp;

Another thing that the company announced was that&nbsp;it would provide reproductive care coverage, which covers&nbsp;lodging and travel costs for part-time as well as full-time&nbsp;employees,&nbsp;contractors,&nbsp;plus a companion, who needs to travel out of the&nbsp;state to receive abortion care.

Not just Match group, but soon after the 50-year federal rights were ended, many companies including Apple and Disney, announced to bear the travel costs for their employees who want to travel in order to undergo the abortion procedure as they live in states where it is now illegal.

After support for anti-abortion group, Match group suspends political donations

Google is in the headlines yet again for its allegedly anticompetitive conduct with the Play store.

The tech giant has been sued by dating apps maker Match Group Inc for refusing to share almost 30 per cent of their sales.

The Tinder owner said that the step was a "last resort" to prevent its other apps from being booted off the Play store.

This is not the first time Google has been sued for its monopolistic attitude as previously "Fortnite" maker Epic Games filed a lawsuit against Alphabet Inc for a similar ordeal.

After lowering its fees, Google told developers that they can bypass the Play store as they have created other programmes to address concerns.

Defending its decision, Google said its payment tool helps deter scams and added "Like any business, we charge for our services, and like any responsible platform, we protect users against fraud."&nbsp;

But Dubey said that going around Play was unviable and added that "It's like saying, 'you don't have to take the elevator to get to the 60th floor of a building, you can always scale the outside wall.'"&nbsp;

The dating app Tinder will offer its users a way to check if their potential dates have been convicted of violent crimes, a feature that experts warn has limitations.

The app's parent company Match Group announced on Wednesday it would offer access to Garbo, an online background check platform that can reveal if a person has any history of violence.

When users navigate to Garbo via the Tinder app, they will have to enter the name, phone number or other details of a potential date to find out if they've been arrested, convicted or listed on the sex offender registry.

Tinder and other dating apps have been pressured to act after women claimed they were sexually assaulted by men they met on the platforms.

"This is just the first step in delivering on our mission to help proactively prevent harm in the digital age," Garbo founder Kathryn Kosmides said in a statement.

A free Garbo search would be offered for the first 500,000 searches, and thereafter an additional search would be charged a $2.50 processing fee.

Some offences such as possession of drugs, loitering, and vagrancy won't be listed in search results. Garbo added that personal information such as home addresses and phone numbers are not displayed.

The company, in a blog post, stated that the service aims to prevent violence by providing information, but stated that there are limitations.

"Most violent individuals never interact with the criminal justice system and Garbo does not have access to all records across the United States due to jurisdictional challenges," the post said.

Nicole Bedera, a researcher specializing in sexual violence, told AFP most sexual assaults are never reported to authorities, and even documented cases face significant challenges in court.

"It's a very under prosecuted crime. And even when cases do move through the criminal justice system -- regardless of what country you're in -- you're going to see a low conviction rate," she added.

The incompleteness of criminal records and racial bias are among the concerns raised by Sarah Lageson, a professor at the Rutgers School of Criminal Justice.

Tinder provided examples of bios, ranging from light-hearted playful to pure transactional.

“Apparently it's easier to buy a house with someone else. Genuine outdoors bloke looking to settle down hopefully,” a user wrote.

“Bank told me I needed to find a partner to buy a house,” said another one.

“Just want someone to buy a house with, nothing serious,” said a prospective home buyer.

Along with other safety features, Tinder unveiled this&nbsp;new feature that will help users to opt into the personal safety app Noonlight, which will connect users to personal emergency services.

The dating app is also adding photo verification feature to help users identify fake people in the app. The photo verification feature will use artifical intelligence and ask users to take real-time photos that will be compared with profile picture.&nbsp;

The users will get a "badge" if their pictures are found to be authentic. The photo feature is currently tested in "in select markets" and will be widely available later this year.

For further enhancing safety measures, Tinder said that it is launching a safety centre within the app to keep users updated of its resources.

Tinder, which is the largest of the apps in Match Group, claims that it facilitates one million dates every week.

The Roskomnadzor watchdog said that Tinder has been added to its register "after it presented the necessary information".

Roskomnadzor -- together with Russia's law enforcement authorities and security agencies including the feared FSB, the successor to the KGB -- keeps a register of so-called "organisers of information distribution".&nbsp;

The register lists 175 sites and services including Russia's biggest bank Sberbank and the country's popular social media network VK.

By law, the companies on the register must store user data in Russia for six months -- including the content of messages exchanged -- and hand over any of the information to law enforcement authorities if requested to do so.

If the company refuses to comply, the authorities can act to block sites, as was the case last year with the embattled Telegram messaging app, created by maverick Russian Internet guru Pavel Durov.

In a statement, a Tinder spokesperson said the company had "received a request to register with the Russian authorities, and, as of now, we have registered to be compliant".

"However, this registration in no way shares any user or personal data with any Russian regulatory bodies and we have not handed over any data to their government," the spokesperson added.

Some Russian internet users made fun of the move, warning that FSB officers will now have access to any steamy correspondence or unrequited pickup attempts.

The victim, Dushyant Sharma, was held captive by Priya Seth (27), Dikshant Kamra (25) and Lakshya Walia (26), at their rented flat in Bajaj Nagar with a motive to extort money from him, ACP (Jhotwara) Aas Mohammad said.

According to the ACP, the woman befriended Sharma on a social networking app. On May 2, Seth invited the victim to her flat and asked him to pay Rs 10 lakh. When the victim denied, she threatened to file a rape case against him, he said.

The woman and her two friends, who were also present at the flat, later confiscated Sharma’s ATM card and telephoned his father demanding Rs 10 lakh as ransom, Mohammad said.

Following which the victim’s father deposited Rs 3 lakh into his bank account.

A transaction of Rs 20,000 was made from Sharma’s ATM card, the ACP said.

The three accused then strangled Sharma and chopped his body into pieces, he said.

According to the police, the accused have been involved in several other criminal cases in the past as well.

Potential matches would be suggested on the basis of dating preferences, things in common and mutual friends. The feature will also have two buttons for "pass" and "interested".

Zuckerberg also clarified that the optional feature will be for finding long-term relationships and "not just hook-ups".

The feature will matchmake millions of users present on the Facebook.It will also push the users into spending more time on its platform.

There was a reduction in the time spent by Facebook users on its platform at the end of 2017. The social media had revealed that the at the end of 2017, time spent by its users had fallen by about 50 million hours a day. This was due to the changes designed to reduce passive video watching.

The social media had thought of devising the plan for over a decade now.

Though no specified time has been announced for the new feature, the officials said that it will be launched soon.

Facebook's shares rose 1.1 per cent to close at $173.86 after the CEO disclosed the plan.
