Gravitas: America finally wakes up to TikTok threat

After the United States and the European Union, now Canada has decided to ban TikTok from all government-issued devices. The Canadian government said that the ban would go into effect from Tuesday (February 28) and federal employees would also be blocked from downloading the application in the future.

The US federal agencies have been given 30 days ultimatum by the White House to ensure no government devices and systems have the Chinese video sharing app TikTok.

In a bid to keep US data safe, all federal agencies must eliminate TikTok from phones and systems and prohibit internet traffic from reaching the company, Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young told agencies in a guidance memorandum seen by Reuters news agency.

On Tuesday, the House Foreign Affairs Committee will vote on a bill that would give President Joe Biden the authority to ban TikTok from all US devices.

The order comes almost a year after Congress voted to prohibit federal employees from using the Chinese-owned app on government devices and gave the Biden administration 60 days to enforce the ban.

The vote comes in the wake of security concerns raised by US lawmakers that Beijing uses Chinese companies to snoop on Americans.

White House gives US federal agencies 30 days to enforce TikTok ban

After the US, Canada bans the Chinese social media app TikTok from government-issued devices over security concerns. The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat in a statement said that the app presents an "unacceptable" threat to security as TikTok's data collection methods provide access to the contents of the government phone.

The country's federal and provincial privacy regulators are jointly investigating the Chinese app owned by ByteDance, over concerns about the use and disclosure of personal information, Reuters reported.

The move comes days after the European Commission imposed a similar ban all across the continent. The commission in its statement said, "suspending the use of TikTok is a purely internal decision for cybersecurity reasons to protect the Council General Secretariat's (GSC) data and staff. As the GSC has no contractual relationship with TikTok, there is no obligation to consult or inform them."

European Commission bans staff from using TikTok on work devices over security concerns

Senator Chuck Schumer of the United States thinks that a proposal to outlaw the widely used short-form video hosting site TikTok in the nation "should be looked at." Schumer told ABC news Sunday, "We do know there is Chinese ownership of the company that owns TikTok. And there are some people in the Commerce Committee that are looking into that right now. We'll see where they come out."

Angus King, an independent politician from Maine, and Marco Rubio, a Republican senator from Florida, have introduced legislation that would target TikTok until it severes ties with its present owner, according to a report by US network CNN.

The Chinese company ByteDance is the owner of the platform TikTok, which displays user-submitted videos that can range in length from three seconds to ten minutes. Since the turmoil in Ladakh in 2020, which resulted in the loss of 20 Indian troops fighting for their nation, the service has been outlawed in India.

US politicians and officials have frequently expressed alarm over Chinese rules, which they claim require TikTok to submit user data about US residents that could be used by Chinese intelligence or for disinformation. The US government banned such products due to these worries.

Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democrat from Colorado, pushed Google and Apple to remove TikTok from their app stores earlier this month due to security concerns. Bennet refers to TikTok as "an unacceptable threat to the national security of the United States" in a letter to the tech companies.

Claims that TikTok leaked information to the Chinese government have previously been refuted. It has claimed that a team situated in the US chooses who gets access to customer data coming from China.

Biden's recently signed $1.7 trillion spending bill contains a provision that outlaws the ByteDance-owned app. “We’re disappointed that Congress has moved to ban TikTok on government devices - a political gesture that will do nothing to advance national security interests - rather than encouraging the Administration to conclude its national security review,” said Brooke Oberwetter, TikTok spokesperson regarding the ban. WATCH | TikTok says 'disappointed over the ban' in US × Notably, the decision comes in the backdrop of several states across the country coming out with their policies banning the app. It was South Dakota governor Kristi Noem that set the ball rolling last month by issuing an executive order and banning the use of the app. “South Dakota will have no part in the intelligence gathering operations of nations who hate us," said Noem in a statement posted on Twitter. Afterwards, it was North Dakota, Alabama, Utah Maryland and Texas that followed the suit. Previously, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also warned against data leaks through the app. Director Christopher Wray told a House panel that potential Chinese government access to users’ data or software through the app is reason to be “extremely concerned”. Wray added that ByteDance embeds specific application programming interfaces (APIs) in the app which gives Beijing access to “control data collection of millions of users or control the recommendation algorithm". TikTok banned on all federal government devices in the US

Chinese video app TikTok has been banned from all US House of Representatives-managed devices, the House's administration arm informed Tuesday. The move is similar to another law soon expected to come into effect in the country that will block the app from all US government devices.

House's Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) in a message sent to all lawmakers and staff said the app is considered "high risk due to a number of security issues". He further asked them to delete it from all devices managed by the House.

Several states have already imposed a ban on the use of ByteDance-owned app on state devices and networks citing security reasons and the fear that China might be able to monitor Americans and access their data. As of last week, 19 states have at least partially blocked the app.

The Biden administration is considering whether to let TikTok continue operating in the US. There have been several controversies around the video-sharing app, with countries like India banning it over security concerns. Amidst deliberations over the proposal to let TikTok function in the country, two US senators have called TikTok a Chinese surveillance tool.

“It’s not just the content you upload to TikTok but all the data on your phone, other apps, all your personal information, even facial imagery, even where your eyes are looking on your phone,” Arkansas Republican Tom Cotton said on Fox News Sunday.

Donald Trump had floated a ban on TikTok as president, and the Biden administration is seeking a security agreement with the platform to avoid it. Concerns regarding data leak through the app owned by Beijing-based ByteDance Ltd have been brought up by critics time and again.

Under the proposal being considered, all US user traffic will be routed through servers maintained by Oracle Corp., with the US-based database giant auditing the app’s algorithms. The user base of the extremely popular app is mostly the younger population.

China wanted to open TikTok account to promote propaganda: Report

In response to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority's (PTA) fourth ban of the video-sharing app TikTok, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) asked the telecommunications authority to provide a mechanism for operating the app.

"The TikTok app is a source of income for the underprivileged," the court said in its judgement.

The PTA lawyer responded by saying that the High Courts in Peshawar and Sindh had ordered the app to be banned, as well as creating a mechanism to stop inappropriate content from making its way into the app.

'Source of income for poor': Pakistan court questions telecom authority over banning of TikTok

“Calling all recruiters!” Makena Yee, 21, a college student in Seattle, shouted into her camera in a recent TikTok video. “These are the reasons why you should hire me!”

Yee went on to outline her qualifications. “I’m driven with confidence, I love keeping organized, I’m adaptive and I’m a team player,” she said, as images of companies she had worked for flashed up on a green screen behind her.

The 60-second video quickly racked up more than 182,000 views and hundreds of comments. Users tagged potential employers. “Someone hire herrrr!” one commenter implored. Yee said she had received more than 15 job leads, which she plans to pursue after a summer internship.

In modern job searches, tidy one-page résumés are increasingly going the way of the fax machine. That may be accelerated by an app known for viral lip-syncing and dance videos, which is popularising the TikTok résumé.

As more college students and recent graduates use TikTok to network and find work, the company has introduced a program allowing people to apply directly for jobs. And employers, many facing labor shortages, are interested. Chipotle, Target, Alo Yoga, Sweetgreen and more than three dozen other companies have started hiring people via the app.

The TikTok résumé is central to these efforts. Job applicants submit videos with the hashtag #TikTokResumes and through TikTokresumes.com to show off their skills, something like a personal essay of old. They include their contact information and, if they want, their LinkedIn profile. Employers review the videos, which must be set to public, and schedule interviews with the applicants they find the most compelling.

The résumés are an effort to help young people “get the bag” and get paid, Kayla Dixon, a marketing manager at TikTok who developed the program, said in a statement.

They are also an outgrowth of a part of TikTok called careertok, where people share job-hunting advice, résumé tips and job opportunities. Videos with the hashtag #edutokcareer have amassed more than 1.2 billion views since TikTok was introduced in the United States in 2018.

But the video résumés have also raised concerns. The format strips away a level of anonymity, allowing employers to potentially dismiss candidates based on how someone looks or acts. Much of the networking on TikTok also depends on amassing views, which can be hard for those who aren’t adept at creating content or who have struggled to get equal distribution in the app’s feed.

TikTok is not the first social platform that companies have sought to leverage for recruiting. LinkedIn, the professional networking site owned by Microsoft, is heavily used by both job seekers and recruiters. In 2015, Taco Bell advertised internship opportunities on Snapchat, and in 2017, McDonald’s let people apply for jobs through a Snapchat tool known as “Snaplications.” That same year, Facebook began allowing companies to post job openings to their pages and to communicate with applicants through Facebook Messenger.

TikTok is now taking it further with video applications, rather than a swipe up to a more traditional application page. Although TikTok résumés are open to people of all ages, top videos submitted through the hashtag are from Gen Z users, most of whom are in college. The app said more than 800 applicants had submitted TikTok résumés in the past week.

“Hiring people or sourcing candidates through video just feels like a natural evolution of where we are in a society,” said Karyn Spencer, global chief marketing officer of Whalar, an influencer company that recently hired an employee off TikTok. “We’re all communicating more and more through video and photos, yet so many résumés our hiring team receives feel like 1985.”

Kalli Roberts, 23, a student at Brigham Young University in Utah, said the 2001 movie “Legally Blonde” had inspired her TikTok résumé. She recreated the famous application video that the main character, Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon, submitted in a bid to attend Harvard Law School.

“Please accept this as my formal Elle Woods style video application,” Roberts wrote in the caption. Her TikTok went viral, and she is now interning in TikTok’s global business department.

“I didn’t feel like my personality or who I actually am was captured in my paper résumé,” Roberts said. TikTok let her showcase skills, like video editing and public speaking, that might have been line items on a written application, she said, adding, “I had 10 other companies outside of TikTok say, ‘If they don’t want you, we do.’”

Many recruiters are looking beyond standardized applications online or through networking sites like LinkedIn, said Sherveen Mashayekhi, co-founder and CEO of Free Agency, a startup focused on hiring in the tech industry.

“Cover letters aren’t being read and résumés aren’t predictive, so alternative formats are necessary,” he said. “Over the next five to 10 years, it won’t just be video. There will be these other assessments like games for the early stage of the hiring process.”

Some companies said TikTok résumés were a useful way to evaluate candidates for public-facing roles. Chipotle has posted more than 100 open positions to the app so far to hire restaurant team members, said Tressie Lieberman, the chain’s vice president for digital marketing.

“We do real cooking in our restaurants,” she said. “We’re excited to see people’s cooking skills, whether it’s putting chicken on the grill, knife skills or people making guacamole at home and bringing those capabilities into the restaurant.”

World Wrestling Entertainment is also using TikTok to recruit, said Paul Levesque, the WWE executive vice president for global talent strategy and development, who is better known as the wrestler Triple H. He said video résumés offered a better sense of an applicant’s personality, which is something the company values.

“For us, it’s slightly different than a regular office position where you’re looking at someone’s background,” he said. “We’re really looking for charisma.”

Shopify, an e-commerce platform, said it had started turning to TikTok to find engineers.

“There are smart entrepreneurial technical people everywhere,” said Farhan Thawar, Shopify’s vice president for engineering. “We have this thing where if you can’t explain a technical topic to a 5-year-old, then you probably don’t understand the topic. So having a medium like TikTok is perfect.”

Other employers raised questions about relying on virality to determine a candidate’s worthiness. Adore Me, a lingerie company, began experimenting with recruiting through TikTok in January. Chloé Chanudet, Adore Me’s chief marketing officer, said she worried about who got the most distribution in the feed.

“Plus size or women of color are much more likely to not have their videos published or be under review for several days,” she said. “We have the same worry that their TikTok résumés may be biased from the algorithm.”

TikTok said it “does not moderate content on the basis of shape, size or ability.”

Some Gen Z job hunters said they weren’t deterred. Christian Medina, 24, an aspiring product manager who graduated from college last year, said he had gotten six job leads since posting a TikTok video last month seeking a product management role.

“Finding a job for a recent grad is almost impossible, and LinkedIn was not the most helpful for me,” he said. “I will definitely continue to use TikTok résumés.”

'Spreading immorality': TikTok blocked in Pakistan for the third time

Pakistan on Thursday lifted a second ban imposed on TikTok over "immoral and unethical" content after the video sharing app again offered to moderate uploads.

A court in the northwestern city of Peshawar last month ordered the communications regulator to block the app over videos that it deemed contrary to the deeply conservative country's moral values.

Pakistan lifts TikTok ban for second time

Chinese video-based application TikTok continues to face global scrutiny after the United States and India cracked down on the app for its alleged links with the Chinese government, and for concerns over user data.

Now, the European Union has also issued a warning to TikTok users. On Tuesday, Europe’s consumer campaign group The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) said that the app is breaching the rights of users “on a massive scale”.

In a statement, the organisation claimed that a probe ought to be launched in terms of the app’s “unfair” copyright policy and virtual coins. In addition, the BEUC took into account that the application has no protection mechanisms in place for children and teenagers who may be exposed to harmful content or harmful advertising.

“In just a few years, TikTok has become one of the most popular social media apps with millions of users across Europe. But TikTok is letting its users down by breaching their rights," Monique Goyens, the BEUC’s director general, was cited as saying by Bloomberg. In addition, Goyens said that a complaint in this regard has been filed with the European Commission and national consumer-protection authorities.

After US and India, EU consumers' group raises concern over TikTok's safety

A second US federal judge has suspended a Trump administration executive order threatening to ban TikTok in the United States.

The preliminary injunction granted late Monday by judge Carl Nichols in a district court in Washington DC comes more than a month after a similar decision in Pennsylvania.

Nichols said TikTok's lawyers had demonstrated that the Commerce Department likely overstepped its authority by seeking to ban the popular social media app and "acted in an arbitrary and capricious manner by failing to consider obvious alternatives."

The White House claims TikTok is a national security risk because of potential links to the Beijing government through its Chinese owner ByteDance.

Second US judge blocks Trump's TikTok ban

The Trump administration has opted to not grant ByteDance a new extension of an order requiring the Chinese company to divest TikTok's US assets.

Talks between the company and government are, however, expected to continue over the short video-sharing app's fate, according to Reuters.

The government had previously issued a 15-day and 7-day extension of the initial 90-day deadline, which was November 12, in Trump's order.

Last week, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States granted TikTok parent ByteDance a one-week extension until Friday over the order to shed TikTok's US assets.

President Donald Trump's August order gave the Justice Department the power to enforce the divestiture order once the deadline expired, but it is unclear when or how the government may seek to compel divestiture.

Trump was said to have personally made the decision to not approve any additional extensions at a meeting of senior US officials, according to a person briefed on the meeting.

The Trump administration contends TikTok poses national security concerns as the personal data of US users could be obtained by China’s government. TikTok, which has over 100 million US users, denies the allegation.

US plans to not extend TikTok divestiture deadline

The US authorities have granted Bytedance, the Chinese owner of TikTok, a 15-day extension of a divestiture order that had directed it to sell the social media sensation in order to resolve national security concerns.

A notice filed by TikTok owner ByteDance in federal court showed that authorities had extended the deadline originally set for November 12 to November 27.

The Trump administration had claimed that the popular video-sharing app could be used for Chinese espionage, and had threatened to ban TikTok unless it is sold to American investors.

The ban was, however, challenged in the courts.

The Treasury Department said on Friday the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) granted the 15-day extension to "provide the parties and the committee additional time to resolve this case in a manner that complies with the Order."

US deadline to sell TikTok extended to Nov 27

The US government will not enforce its ban on Chinese-owned social media sensation TikTok to comply with a federal court ruling issued in the national security case.

The move comes after a federal court in Pennsylvania blocked the Trump administration from carrying out the ban, which had been ordered by the White House based on claims the app posed a security threat due to the company's links to Beijing.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the US Commerce Department had decided to hold off on enforcing a Trump administration order to ban the video-sharing app owned by Chinese-based ByteDance.

According to the report, the Commerce Department said the shutdown order won’t go into effect "pending further legal developments." Other court cases are also pending on the matter.

ByteDance had been given until Thursday to restructure ownership of the app in the United States to meet national security concerns, but it filed a petition in a Washington court this week asking for a delay.

The company said in a statement Tuesday that it had asked the government for a 30-day extension because of "continual new requests and no clarity on whether our proposed solutions would be accepted," but it was not granted.

US decides against enforcing TikTok ban following court ruling

TikTok asked a Washington court Tuesday to stop an order from US President Donald Trump's administration from taking effect this week as the White House seeks to ban the Chinese-owned app in the United States.

Chinese company ByteDance is facing a Thursday deadline to restructure ownership of the app in the United States to meet US security concerns.

In its court petition, TikTok asked for more time, saying it has not received enough feedback on its proposed solution.

The company said in a statement that it had asked the government for a 30-day extension because it was "facing continual new requests and no clarity on whether our proposed solutions would be accepted" but it had not been granted.

It was turning to the court for that reason, it said.

US President Donald Trump signed a set of orders against the video platform this summer.

One required ByteDance to sell its US TikTok operations within 90 days, citing national security concerns.

The company also faced an order that would effectively ban the app from the country by the same date.

But on October 30, a Pennsylvania judge issued an injunction temporarily blocking the order aimed at banning it.

The order would have knocked the Chinese-owned video-sharing app offline by cutting it off from US businesses providing website hosting, data storage, and other fundamentals needed to operate.

Trump has accused the popular video-sharing app of handing over American user data to Beijing -- which the company flatly denies.

After negotiations with several US firms, ByteDance and TikTok proposed creating a new company with IT company Oracle as a technology partner and retail giant Walmart as a business partner.

The plan seemed to convince the administration, but the platform is still awaiting a green light.

TikTok said that with Thursday's "deadline imminent and without an extension in hand, we have no choice but to file a petition in court to defend our rights and those of our more than 1,500 employees in the US."

TikTok files last-minute petition against Trump order

The U.S Commerce Department said on Sunday it would "vigorously defend" an executive order that seeks to bar transactions with Chinese-owned short video-sharing app TikTok after a federal judge halted the action.

U.S. District Judge Wendy Beetlestone on Friday blocked the Commerce Department order set to take effect on Nov. 12 that would have effectively barred ByteDance-owned TikTok from operating in the United States.

The Commerce Department said on Sunday it would "comply with the injunction ... but intends to vigorously defend the (executive order) and the Secretary’s implementation efforts from legal challenges."

Beetlestone enjoined the agency from barring data hosting within the United States for TikTok, content delivery services and other technical transactions.

President Donald Trump`s administration contends that TikTok poses national security concerns as personal data collected on 100 million Americans who use the app could be obtained by China`s government. TikTok denies the allegations.

Beetlestone wrote that the "government’s own descriptions of the national security threat posed by the TikTok app are phrased in the hypothetical."

On Sept. 27, U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols in Washington issued a preliminary injunction in a suit brought by ByteDance that stopped the Commerce Department from ordering Apple Inc and Alphabet Inc`s Google app stores to remove TikTok for download by new users. That order had been set to take effect later that day.

Nichols is set to hold a hearing on Wednesday on the other aspects of the Commerce Department order that Beetlestone blocked on Friday.

Beetlestone`s order, in a suit brought by three TikTok content creators, also blocks the app store download ban.

Talks have been ongoing to finalize a preliminary deal for Walmart Inc and Oracle Corp to take stakes in a new company, TikTok Global, that would oversee U.S. operations. Trump said last month the deal had his "blessing."

Pakistan has decided to lift a ban on popular social media app TikTok after the company vowed to block all accounts involved in spreading "obscenity and immorality", the country's telecom authority said in a tweet on Monday.

The move comes some 10 days after Pakistan blocked TikTok for failing to filter out "immoral and indecent" content.

Pakistan's telecom regulator blocked TikTok on Friday for failing to filter out "immoral and indecent" content, another blow to the social media app that has come under increasing scrutiny as its popularity has surged across the globe.

The ban comes in view of "complaints from different segments of the society against immoral and indecent content on the video sharing application," said the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
