At Lodhi road, the AQI (Air Quality Index) was 315 with PM (Particulate Matter) 2.5 at 8:00 in the morning. In the Ayanagar area, the air quality also dipped to the very poor with 309. Also in capital's famous locality Mathura road which also has Purana Qila, the AQI fell to 328 with PM 2.5.

In addition, due to fog, as many as 10 trains were rescheduled after getting delayed by at least by 2 hours.

Delhi, which is home to approx 19 million people, is reeling under the menace of air pollution from the past couple of years. The region faced a major air quality crisis last year as pollution levels shot through the roof and even forced the shutdown of schools.

Delhi witnesses light showers, more rain likely in next few days

At least 10 people were killed and 28 others injured after a deadly thunderstorm struck parts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.

Out of the 10 people, three died in Gonda, one in Faizabad and six in Sitapur.

The Meteorological Centre, Lucknow had earlier issued warnings of thunderstorm accompanied with squall, dust storm and rain in parts of Uttar Pradesh.

This comes after 15 people were reported dead and nine others injured after a thunderstorm hit various regions of the state on June 2.

The causalities were reported from Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Amroha, and Sambhal districts of the state.

"No flight landed or took off from Chandigarh (airport) until today afternoon due to bad weather," a Chandigarh International Airport Limited official was quoted as saying by PTI.

The weather department here said that a ground-level dust storm in Rajasthan, with the wind, speeds up to 40 kmph, had led to a spike in the levels of coarse particles in the air in most parts of Haryana and Punjab, including Chandigarh, since yesterday.

Director of Chandigarh's MeT Department Surinder Paul told PTI that a western disturbance approaching the region was likely to clear the air.

"A western disturbance is approaching the region and the dusty weather should dissipate by tomorrow afternoon," Paul said.

The northern part of India including Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab is witnessing dust storms from past two days.

On Wednesday, the mercury hit 46.2 degrees Celsius in Punjab. Heatwave also prevailed in most part of the state.

The Patiala recorded the hottest day with 46.2 temperature while in Ludhiana the temperature was recorded at 43.1.

According to reports, thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected in an upcoming week.

Northeast US storms kill two, state of emergency declared

Apart from inflicting loss of lives and properties, the recent thunderstorm has also destroyed the mango harvest in northern India.

One of the affected farmers in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur district told ANI on Monday, that he suffered a loss of Rs 1 lakh.

He appealed to the government to provide give him an aid.

"I have suffered a loss of about Rs 1 lakh. It will be good if the government provides us compensation, otherwise we are destroyed," the farmer said.

Thunderstorm: Farmers suffer loss of mango crop in northern India

Condoling the deaths, Congress President Rahul Gandhi in a tweet asked party workers to provide all assistance to the bereaved families.

The much-needed reprieve came after a sweltering day, when the maximum temperature had reached 40.60 degrees Celsius, a notch above the normal. Humidity during the morning hours was recorded at 60 per cent, a MeT official said.

The officials said two squalls whipped through the national capital. One clocking 109 kmph hit the Safdarjung area at 4:44 pm and continued till 4:46 pm. The other gusting to 96 kmph battered the Palam area at 4:33 pm.

The strong winds knocked down nearly 200 trees in the city. Incidents of wall collapse were reported from Najafgarh, Transit Camp, Nehru Place, Mohan Garden in Uttam Nagar and Raj Nagar in Palam, said a senior officer of the Delhi Fire Service.

A man was crushed to death in a wall collapse, while a woman was killed when a tree uprooted and fell on her, the police said.

Traffic in many areas moved at a snail's pace due to the reduced visibility.

The inclement weather interrupted the launch of a 140 kWp rooftop solar plant at IP Extension attended by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Operations at the Delhi airport came to a halt due to the dust storm. At least 40 flights were diverted and more than 24 delayed, an official said.

Metro operations were affected at a number of stations on the Violet and Blue lines after trees fell on overhead electricity (OHE) wires.

The Northern Railways said the train movement was disrupted on the section between the Hazrat Nizamuddin and Palwal stations due to tree felling.

A few passenger and freight trains were held up for around 25 minutes because of the disruption. The Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express was also stopped near Sonepat due to uprooting of trees.

According to MeT department officials, the Safdarjung Observatory gauged 8.3 mm of rainfall. The Palam, Aya Nagar and Lodhi Road areas recorded 0.8, 6.4 and 2.1 mm of precipitation.

53 dead after thunderstorms wreak havoc in four states

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the death toll in several North&nbspIndian&nbspstates due to thunderstorm and lightning&nbsphas risen to 80.

The deaths were reported from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi and Uttrakhand.

As many as 71 people lost their lives in five states, including 42 in Uttar Pradesh, due to lightning and thunderstorms since Sunday, the Home Ministry said today.

Among the dead, 42 were in Uttar Pradesh, 14 in West Bengal, 12 in Andhra Pradesh, two in Delhi and one in Uttarakhand, a ministry spokesperson said.

Altogether 83 people were injured in Uttar Pradesh, 11 in Delhi and two in Uttarakhand.

A total of 24 districts in Uttar Pradesh, six in West Bengal, three in Andhra Pradesh, two in Delhi and one in Uttarakhand were hit by the lightning and thunderstorms, the spokesperson said.

High-velocity winds uprooted trees and affected road, rail and air services last evening in several places in north India, including the national capital.

Thunderstorms claim 8 more lives in north India

Thunderstorms and lightning on May 2-3 killed at least 134 people and injured more than 400 in five states, including the hardest-hit Uttar Pradesh, the Home Ministry said on Tuesday.

The highest 80 people were killed in Uttar Pradesh and nearly 100 others were injured in the state. A majority of the deaths and injuries were reported from the Agra region, a home ministry spokesperson said, giving the latest figures.

Altogether 35 people were killed and another 209 were injured in Rajasthan. Eleven people were killed in Telangana, six were killed in Uttarakhand and two in Punjab.

Nearly 100 people were also injured in Telangana, Uttarakhand and Punjab.

Following thunderstorms, power supply was cut off in many areas as squall uprooted trees and snapped electricity cables.

At least 20,000 electric poles were uprooted and 2,500 electric transformers were damaged during the two days.

More than 1,800 houses were damaged and 800 cattles were also killed, the spokesperson said.

"If wind speed is reported in the range of 70-90 kmph then train movement will remain normal but trains will enter with a restricted speed of 40 kmph or less at the platforms on the elevated section.

"If wind speed is reported more than 90 kmph then trains will be put on hold at platforms and no train will enter platform with a speed of more than 15 kmph," a senior DMRC official said.

The government has also asked the commuters to check the weather outside before stepping outdoors.

They have also been asked them to keep a watch on the local weather updates and warnings.

The people residing indoors have been advised to unplug unnecessary electrical appliances.

The advisory asks them to avoid taking a bath or shower from running water. "This is because lightning can travel along pipes. Keep away from doors, windows, fire places, stoves, bath-tubs, or any other electrical charge conductors," the advisory stated.

Vehicles parked or running on the road should keep away from overhead electrical wires, tinned roofs, trees, etc

The commuters have been advised to take shelter under concrete structures. Drivers have been advised to use dippers or parking lights while driving.

Moreover, light rain and thundershowers are likely at isolated places during next 48-72 hours in Punjab. They are likely to increase in intensity and spread between 7-8 May.&nbsp;

Also, thunderstorm accompanied with Squall is also likely at isolated places during this period, the IMD reported.&nbsp;

The temperature will be at a maximum of 41 degrees Celcius with a lowest 28 at&nbsp;degrees Celcius on Sunday.&nbsp;

These pre-Monsoon weather activities have been instrumental in dropping the maximum temperatures. This has paved way for comfortable weather conditions across the city and adjoining areas of Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad.

Over the next five Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region is likely to be affected by heatwave conditions. If we move down south heavy rains are expected in Tamil Nadi, South interior Karnataka and Kerala. Heavy rainfall is also expected in isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura.
