After riding <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/uk-warns-china-of-serious-consequences-if-hong-kong-rights-not-honoured-232315">China</a>'s demand train for nearly two decades, Asia's coal industry is looking to a future of smaller markets and slimmer pickings, as buying declines in the world's second-biggest economy and climate change concerns blunt demand.

By far the biggest user of coal-fired power, China is buying less thermal coal from global markets, said delegates to Asia's premier coal conference last month in Bali, both as renewables gain market share and as it digs up more of its own supply.

A backlash against coal is also growing in the West. Last week, investors managing nearly half the world's invested capital demanded ahead of a Group of 20 summits in Osaka that governments take urgent action on climate change.

Delegates to Coaltrans in Bali, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/indonesian-troops-flood-jakarta-streets-after-post-election-riots-220989">Indonesia</a>, however, said that while coal's glory days are done, reports of its imminent demise have been greatly exaggerated.

"Coal will continue to provide low-cost energy. We are looking at increasing demand in Southeast Asia, so we are still positive," said Hendri Tan, marketing director at PT Adaro Indonesia, a unit of PT Adaro Energy, Indonesia's second-biggest coal producer.

Indonesia is the world's biggest exporter of thermal coal, used primarily for power generation, shipping out 429 million tonnes last year and accounting for 43% of the 1 billion-tonne-a-year seaborne market, according to Australian government data.

Around 124 gigawatts (GW) of coal-fired power capacity is under development in Southeast and South Asia, both key markets for Indonesia, and that is expected to offset declining demand from China, said the chairman of Indonesia Coal Mining Association, Pandu Sjahrir.

Indonesia itself is expected to add some 50 million tonnes a year of coal-fired power demand by 2023, he said, a rise of 55% that would make it one of Asia's biggest consumers.

As China takes less, economies like India, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Philippines are also expected to pick up the slack, delegates said.

Between 2014 and 2018, China's coal demand fell by 2.4%, while India's swelled by 16.7%, according to BP's Statistical Review of World Energy report this year. Over the same period, Vietnam's coal use grew by 65% and Indonesia's by 36%, helping to offset falls in the United States, Japan and Germany as well.

Beach parties end, belly dancers, stay home

Indonesia shot to prominence as a coal producer last decade as it dug out and shipped the fuel to meet power demand from China, eventually outstripping then leader Australia.

As China's manufacturing might grow, so too did its hunger for electricity, turning it into a net thermal coal importer around 2004. That was a bonanza for miners and helped establish Coaltrans in Bali as the industry's main event in Asia.

During the boom years, companies would battle to outdo each other at Coaltrans with lavish beach parties. One Uzbekistan company flew in belly dancers to entertain potential customers drinking free-flow vodka and eating caviar, delegates said.

"People were throwing money at everything," said SMG Consultants' Alistair MacDonald, who has attended Coaltrans since 2000. But times have changed, he said.

"The bankers aren't here. A lot of the services like insurers aren't here any more," he said. "It's a lot more domestic (Indonesian) players, and they want to be perceived as energy companies, not as coal companies."

Staring at prospects of tougher conditions ahead, Indonesia's large thermal coal miners are diversifying into other geographies and other industries, Sacha Winzenried, a partner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, told Reuters.

"They are looking into renewables, other infrastructure, supply chain support such as water, utilities, shipping and logistics," Winzenried said.

Indonesia's Adaro Energy bought an Australian coal mine from Rio Tinto last year. And Indonesian state coal miner Bukit Asam is targeting commercial operation of four coal processing plants in South Sumatra that would extract gas from, as well as burn, coal.

Financing dries up

Delegates also noted the difficulty of getting financing for their businesses, working capital and further investments, and some were pessimistic on the coal industry's longevity.

One mining engineer in his fifties, who had spent most of his career in coal at a major miner and also had an MBA, saw his career options as limited.

"I've spent twenty years in coal. Where can I go next?" he said. "I would not recommend any young people join this industry."

Still, renewables are not expected to make the same inroads in emerging Asian economies as in developed nations, because Asian governments are working to provide cheap baseload power from coal, and renewables can't compete on scale or price, said an industry analyst, declining to be named due to his listed company's policy.

"Less coal will mean a less polluted world," he said. "But if you don't want (coal) to exist, then you have to come up with a realistic alternative."

Thai cave where boys were trapped now a thriving tourist destination

Thai police said on Thursday there is enough evidence to press human trafficking charges against the captain and crew of a boat carrying <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/65-rohingyas-found-shipwrecked-in-thailand-226453">65 Rohingya Muslims that was shipwrecked this week</a> on a southern Thai island.

Many Rohingya Muslims have boarded boats in recent months to try to reach Malaysia, part of what authorities fear could be a new wave of people smuggling by sea after a 2015 crackdown on trafficking.

The 65 Rohingya men, women and children were discovered on Tuesday on Rawi island off Thailand's southern Satun province where their boat had beached due to engine trouble while en route to Malaysia.

Police have already charged the crew with assisting the migrants to illegally enter Thailand.

"We have completed talking to some of the Rohingya and we now have evidence to press human trafficking charges against the Thai captain and the five Myanmar crew," Police Major General Supawat Thapkliew, the head of police in Satun, told Reuters.

"We have not completed questioning all the Rohingya to determine whether they were tricked or they came willingly," he added.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha on Thursday ordered relevant agencies to care for the Rohingya - 29 men, 31 women and five children - while authorities complete their investigation.

"The prime minister wants to stress that the Rohingya migration issue is important to the government and Thailand has worked with other countries on this issue continuously," Lieutenant General Werachon Sukondhapatipak, the government spokesman, told reporters.

Myanmar regards the Rohingya as illegal migrants from the Indian subcontinent and has confined tens of thousands to sprawling camps in Rakhine state segregated from the Buddhist Rakhine population since violence swept the area in 2012.

The unrest prompted tens of thousands of Rohingya to flee Myanmar by sea, an exodus that peaked in 2015 when an estimated 25,000 people crossed the Andaman Sea for Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, many drowning in unsafe and overloaded boats.

More than 700,000 Rohingya fled into Bangladesh in 2017 after a crackdown by Myanmar's army, according to UN agencies.

Stranded Rohingyas linked to human trafficking: Thai police

A group of 65 Rohingya Muslims have been found on a shipwrecked boat off the coast of southern Thailand, Navy officials said Wednesday as authorities investigated whether they had been trafficked.

The boat was discovered early Tuesday in the Tarutao Marine National Park in southern Thailand, some 400 kilometres (250 miles) from the border of Myanmar.

Some 740,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar since a brutal military crackdown in 2017 against the stateless minority in the Buddhist-majority country.

Most have escaped into overcrowded refugee camps in Bangladesh, while others have fallen prey to human trafficking rings as they seek better lives in Malaysia or Thailand.

A Thai Navy spokesman said there were 31 women and five children among the Rohingya on the shipwrecked boat.&nbsp;

One Thai man and five Burmese citizens were also in the group. The men said they were fishing in the area and had no link to the Rohingyas.&nbsp;

The six men "were detained for questioning because of their suspicious behaviour," Thai Navy spokesman, vice admiral Khan Deeubol, said Wednesday.

A provincial official said the group was initially investigated for illegal entry but the probe had broadened.&nbsp;

"Authorities are not ruling out other issues such as human trafficking," an Internal Security Command (ISOC) source in Satun province told AFP.&nbsp;

Photos from the Thai Navy showed the group on a beach, some eating rice near the marooned ship. &nbsp;

Bangladeshi authorities have intercepted several suspected traffickers seeking to transport refugees from squalid camps in Cox's Bazaar, where nearly one million Rohingyas are living -- almost all refusing to go back to Myanmar out of fear for their safety and rights.&nbsp;

Myanmar has said the 2017 crackdown was aimed at rooting out insurgents who attacked military posts.&nbsp;

It has signed a repatriation agreement with Bangladesh to return Rohingya refugees, but so far virtually none have volunteered to go back.&nbsp;

United Nations investigators have said the violence amounts to "genocide" and called for the prosecution of the top general

65 Rohingyas found shipwrecked in Thailand

Thailand's junta chief Prayut Chan-ocha&nbsp;was elected late on Wednesday as the kingdom's first civilian prime minister since the 2014 coup he led, in a vote by a parliament stacked with appointed allies of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/thailands-newly-crowned-king-praises-unity-in-final-coronation-days-speech-216439">conservative, arch-royalist army</a>.

Prayut swept aside his sole challenger, the charismatic 40-year-old billionaire Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit who led the anti-military bloc, garnering 500 votes to his rival's 244.

Victory for the retired general was all but guaranteed by the support of the handpicked 250-member Senate and the late swing of key secondary parties into an army-affiliated coalition after frantic behind-the-scenes talks.

The Senate, which was appointed by the junta, includes scores of military officers and loyalists -- many identifiable as they read out Prayut's name by their short serviceman's haircuts.&nbsp;

His election completes a journey for the 65-year-old Prayut from gruff army chief who toppled the last civilian government to prime minister, with claims to legitimacy after an unexpectedly strong showing from his army-linked party in a March general election.

Yet Thailand remains bitterly divided after 13 years defined by coups, violent street protests and short-lived civilian governments.&nbsp;

At their root is a rivalry between an arch-royalist conservative establishment and pro-democracy parties supported by many in the lower and middle class as well as young people wearied by the rule of hectoring generals.

Critics say Prayut represents a narrow elite and lacks the vision to govern as a civilian leader, having failed as junta leader to reboot Thailand's economy, bridge its chasmic inequality or heal the ulcerous political divisions.

After the count, a defiant Thanathorn vowed to "work harder" to build Thailand's pro-democracy front.

"Dictators cannot resist the wind of change forever," he told reporters.

With his withering critiques of the military and its conservative politics, Thanathorn is seen as a serious long-term threat to the establishment.

But he is besieged by court cases that could see him banned from politics and even jailed. He could not even enter the parliament building on Wednesday because of the legal suits against him.

Meanwhile, lawmakers from Pheu Thai, the political machine tied to self-exiled premier Thaksin Shinawatra, took advantage of the rare opportunity to criticise Prayut during the televised proceedings.&nbsp;

Prayut has "obsolete ideas" that will endanger the country, MP Cholnan Srikeo said.

But supporters say Prayut is a stabilising figure who can steer Thailand away from its perennial political crises.&nbsp;

"I am going to vote for General Prayut," said Mongkolkit Suksintharanon, head of the Thai Civilised Party, a junta ally. "Thanathorn has no experience."

The March election was cast as a choice between a tethered democracy led by a junta in civilian clothes and parties aligned with Thaksin.

But an unexpected third force emerged, led by the billionaire auto parts scion Thanathorn.

His Future Forward Party won 81 seats to become Thailand's third-largest party, emerging from nowhere to scoop up millions of votes.

Thanathorn was put forward on Tuesday as the anti-junta bloc's only choice for premier, despite the odds against him.

Standing for prime minister was always going to be "futile", said Karen Brooks, an Asia expert at the Council on Foreign Relations.

But "it serves to further raise his profile... and perhaps raise the cost to the military and its allies as they proceed with efforts to destroy him," she added.

"Prime Minister Modi thanked Prime Minister Jugnauth and reiterated his commitment to further strengthening the fraternal and enduring bilateral ties between the two countries in all spheres," said the MEA.&nbsp;

Modi also held talks with his Nepal counterpart K P Sharma Oli during which both leaders expressed their commitment in further deepening relations.

On Modi's talks with Bhutanese PM Tshering, the MEA said the two leaders discussed bilateral commitments and agreed to further solidify the traditionally strong ties.

The prime minister also held a bilateral meeting with Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid during which they exchanged views on matters of mutual interest.&nbsp;

In his first engagement after being sworn in, the prime minister held a meeting with Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov, who attended the oath taking ceremony as the Chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

"Recalling that India and Kyrgyzstan have warm and friendly relations, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction at the strengthening of bilateral cooperation over the years," the MEA said.

India invited leaders of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) countries as well as Jeenbekov and Jugnauth for Modi's swearing-in ceremony.

Besides India, BIMSTEC comprises Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal and Bhutan.

In 2014, Modi had invited all SAARC leaders, including the then Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his swearing-in ceremony, in a major initiative to reach out to the neighbourhood.&nbsp;

PM holds bilateral talks with BIMSTEC leaders; focus on boosting ties

Former prime minister and close advisor to Thailand's revered royals Prem Tinsulanonda died early Sunday aged 98, a senior parliamentarian said, ending a decades-long career of unrivalled influence over Thai politics.

Prem "passed away this morning around 9 o'clock", interim house speaker Chai Chidchob told MPs on the third day of Thailand's new parliament.

"I would like to ask everyone to stand for a moment in memorial."

Hailed as a stabilising force by allies but loathed by critics as a conservative underminer of democracy in the kingdom, Prem was a top aide to the late beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej and helped cement the unshakeable bond between the monarchy and the military.

As Privy Council president his influence endured through a tense succession period after Bhumibol died in 2016 and Prem was briefly appointed regent before Bhumibol's son Maha Vajiralongkorn ascended the throne.

Prem presided over the king's surprise wedding to Queen Suthida days before his coronation earlier this month.

With assistants helping him stand, he took part in a key sacred water ritual on coronation day alongside 2014 coup leader and junta chief Prayut-Chan-O.

The participation highlighted his legacy of cementing the army's self-designated role as protector of the royals.

The general helped establish the all-powerful "monarchised military" seen in Thailand today, according to Paul Chambers, lecturer at Naresuan University in Thailand.

"Prem proved time and again that his savvy acumen could prevent or facilitate army coups that helped the palace," Chambers told AFP.

Born in southern Songkhla province in 1920, 12 years before Thailand's absolute monarchy was abolished, Prem experienced most of modern Thai history.

He graduated from the country's top military academy in 1941, showcasing his talent on the frontline by fighting the French in Cambodia and later the British in Burma.

He was a key figure in the kingdom's battle against communists in its northern provinces and was rewarded with the top job of army chief in 1978.

But the ambitious commander only held the position for two years before seizing power in what was widely viewed as a silent coup.

His 1980-1988 rule as premier brought a rare period of political and economic stability to Thailand thanks to his patronage of military officers but most importantly through the trust he forged with Bhumibol.

The bachelor general cultivated loyalty in the military despite two counter-coup attempts.

He helped instigate three coups including the one in 2014, according to Chambers, while indirectly assisting in the ouster of four other governments.

Prem was credited by some for opening up some space for democratic politics when he eventually stepped down for an elected premier to take office.

But when he was soon after appointed member and later president of the super-elite Privy Council, an inner circle of advisers to the king, Prem became a figure of revulsion in Thailand's pro-democracy camp.

Anger over his influence boiled over after the 2006 coup that ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra when his supporters accused Prem of masterminding the putsch.

In a symbolic meeting several months after the May 2014 putsch, Thailand's junta chief Prayut visited Prem at his home in a widely photographed trip.

"I would like to ask everyone to stand for a moment in memorial." Hailed as a stabilising force by allies but loathed by critics as a conservative underminer of democracy in the kingdom, Prem was a top aide to the late beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej and helped cement the unshakeable bond between the monarchy and the military. A fire erupted on a cargo ship docked at a port in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/thailands-king-vajiralongkorn-set-for-first-grand-procession-since-coronation-216021">Thailand</a>, triggering a blast and leaving at least 25 workers suffering from smoke inhalation and other injuries, officials said Saturday.

The district around Laem Chabang deep-sea port in Chonburi province, located two hours south of capital Bangkok, has been declared a "danger zone", said port director Yuthana Mokkhao. &nbsp;

The fire broke out on Saturday at 6.35 am (23:35 GMT Friday) on the cargo ship named KMTC Hong Kong, which was moored to the port terminal.&nbsp;

Photos circulated on Thai media showed thick smoke billowing from the freight ship as the fire blazed.&nbsp;

Yuthana said people on the port were "affected by smoke inhalation and hit by small shrapnel from the containers".&nbsp;

At least 25 port workers suffered from minor injuries or irritation from the fire, said Sivaporn Buapong, chief of Chonburi province's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.&nbsp;

"The situation is under control now ... Forensic police will investigate the cause of the fire," Sivaporn told AFP.&nbsp;

The deep-sea port is an integral part of an ambitious $45 billion infrastructure scheme by Thailand's junta known as the "Eastern Economic Corridor" (EEC) to transform the coastal area into a tech hub.&nbsp;

Over 7 million containers are transported through Laem Chabang port annually, according to the EEC's website.&nbsp;

Under the new scheme, the port is due to expand with four new container berths, which the junta expects to more than double freight traffic to 18.1 million containers per year.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/thailands-king-vajiralongkorn-set-for-first-grand-procession-since-coronation-216021">Thailand`s King Maha Vajiralongkorn</a> on Friday opened the country`s first parliament since the military seized power from an elected government in a 2014 coup.

Parliament will choose a new prime minister, who will form a cabinet likely next month, but its exact makeup is not yet known after a March 24 election produced no clear winner.

However, a military-linked party aiming to keep current junta leader Prayuth Chan-Ocha in power is expected to have the edge in cementing power under rules written by the military government.

"May the members of parliament be aware of the importance and responsibility of their duties," King Vajiralongkorn, accompanied by his new Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana, said.&nbsp;

"Because every action of each member will directly impact the security of the nation and the happiness of the people."&nbsp;

The Thai parliament combines a 500-member House of Representatives elected in the March 24 polls and 250 senators, who were entirely appointed by the junta.&nbsp;

Ambassadors, junta members, and members of the king`s Privy Council were also present at the convention, which came a day after an anti-junta party leader was suspended as a member of parliament over his alleged illegal holding of shares in a media company after registering as a candidate for the election.

Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, leader of the youth-oriented Future Forward Party, would be suspended from taking his seat until a ruling by the Constitutional Court, which could see him permanently disqualified.&nbsp;

Thanathorn has denied the charge and said he had already transferred his shares before he officially registered. The March 24 election pitted supporters of the junta, who seek to keep Prayuth in power, against the Democratic Front of seven parties that wants to keep the military out of politics.&nbsp;

With 245 seats, the Democratic Front now led by Thanathorn is trying to form a government and block a 15-party coalition of pro-junta Palang Pracharat and its allies, which together holds 134 seats so far.&nbsp;

Some other 100 elected members of parliament from other parties have not officially aligned with either side.&nbsp;The lower house will convene again on Saturday to choose its chairman.&nbsp;

Under the new junta-written constitution, the House of Representatives will vote along with the junta-appointed Senate to choose the prime minister, which is expected later this month.&nbsp;

Prayuth appears set to stay in power, providing that the majority of the Senate votes in line to get him over the line of 375 votes, or half of the combined houses.&nbsp;The next government is expected to take shape early next month.&nbsp;

The year-long trade war with China is pushing American companies to source more from GSP countries such as India, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and Turkey, a latest report said Tuesday warning that cancelling GSP benefits to India would only help China.

The Coalition for GSP, a group of American companies and trade associations, in a report on Tuesday said the latest official trade figures shows that the Generalised System of Preference or GSP saved American companies USD 105 million in March, an increase of USD 28 million (36 per cent) from March, 2018 and the second-highest level on record.

In the first quarter of 2019, GSP saved American companies USD 285 million. That is USD 63 million more than the first quarter of 2018 -- itself a record-shattering year.

GSP is the largest and oldest US trade preference programme and is designed to promote economic development by allowing duty-free entry for thousands of products from designated beneficiary countries.

On March 4, President Donald Trump announced that the US intends to terminate India's designations as a beneficiary developing country under the GSP programme. The 60-day notice period ended on May 3.

According to the Washington DC-based Coalition for GSP, products hit by Section 301 tariffs when imported from China account for 90 per cent of increased GSP imports in 2019.

Overall, GSP imports rose by about USD 760 million, with USD 672 million coming on products on China Section 301 lists. GSP imports of products on those Section 301 lists increased 19 per cent while GSP imports of other products increased by just five per cent.

Noting that imports from China, subject to new tariffs, are down significantly, the coalition said countries from which GSP imports of products on China Section 301 lists have increased the most in the first quarter of 2019.

According to the report, India benefits the most from this.

"For India, 97 per cent of increased 2019 GSP imports are on the China Section 301 lists. GSP imports on Section 301 lists increased by USD 193 million (18 per cent), while imports of everything else increased by just USD seven million (two per cent)," it said.

Similarly, for Turkey, 97 per cent of increased 2019 GSP imports are on the China Section 301 lists. For the Philippines, GSP imports of products on China 301 lists growth helped offset declining GSP imports of all other products. South Africa, Brazil and Egypt saw similar increases in Section 301-affected products offset losses of other products, it said.

GSP imports from Indonesia grew only twice as much on affected products, the report said. Yet, even here, growth rates are faster for products on the Section 301 lists: GSP imports of products affected by new China tariffs grew by 22 per cent, while imports of other products grew by 15 per cent.

"Not only would terminating GSP for India, Turkey or others under review (Thailand, Indonesia) hurt many American companies and workers that have relied on GSP for years, it would also reduce viable sourcing options for companies looking to buy less from China in response to Section 301 tariffs -- thereby undermining the president's own objectives," the coalition said.

In another report, the coalition said cancelling GSP for India would benefit China.

Referring to the results of a recent survey, the coalition said 30 per cent of companies would look to source more from China if GSP benefits went away.

That was about the same share of companies reporting they would source more from any of the approximately 120 remaining GSP countries and much higher than those would source more from non-China, non-GSP countries (NAFTA, EU, Japan etc.).

While President Donald Trump has tweeted about raising tariffs on China to create additional negotiating leverage, terminating GSP for India would&nbsp;
undermine it, it said.

For some products such as luggage, simultaneously ending GSP for India and raising List 3 tariffs from 10 per cent to 25 per cent would make Chinese products more competitive compared to India, not less, it said.

That is because there is a significant overlap between products imported from India under GSP and Chinese imports targeted by the Administration for Section 301 tariffs, it said.

Over 75 per cent of India's GSP imports are included on one of the Section 301 lists.

Given the head-to-head competition between India and China on many of these products, ending GSP for India would have the same effect as lowering tariffs on China, the report said.

"And we can see that the Administration's tariffs on China do seem to have impacted both imports from India under GSP and from China so far in 2019," it said.

In the first two months of 2019 (most recent data available), GSP imports from India are up significantly for products on the Section 301 lists, but down slightly for products where China does not face new tariffs, according to the coalition.&nbsp;

It is the opposite for China: imports are down significantly for products facing new tariffs, and up slightly for those that do not, it said.&nbsp;

"New tariffs on China presumably would amplify these trends -- but new tariffs on India would mitigate them. That puts the Administration at a crossroads: is increased leverage on China or India a higher priority? Because the data show you cannot raise tariffs on one without helping the other," the coalition said in its report.&nbsp;

In a tradition dating to the 18th century, the Chakri kings have held the formal title Rama, after an avatar of Hindu god Vishnu in the ancient Indian epic the Ramayana.&nbsp;

Here are details of the nine previous kings in the dynasty:

Rama I - King Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke (born 1737-died 1809)

Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke founded the Chakri dynasty and established Bangkok as the capital of Siam, as Thailand was known, in 1782.&nbsp;

He ruled for 27 years and is best known for repelling the last major Burmese attack on Siam, known as the Nine Armies` Wars, from 1785 to 1786.

Rama II - King Phra Buddha Loetla Nabhalai (1767-1824)

King Phra Buddha Loetla Nabhalai succeeded his father in 1809 and ruled for almost 15 years.

His reign was more peaceful.

Art and literature flourished.

The king was an avid composer of poetry, plays and songs.&nbsp;

The most notable poet under the king`s patronage was Sunthorn Phu, known as the "the Shakespeare of Thailand" for his role in literature.

Rama III - King Phra Nangklao (1788-1851)

King Phra Nangklao reformed the tax and treasury system and oversaw a boom in trade with China during his 27-year rule from 1824.

Siam renewed official contacts with western powers for the first time since the late Ayutthaya period, and supported the British in their first Anglo-Burmese War in 1824.&nbsp;

The king did not name a successor and the throne passed to his half-brother.

Rama IV - King Mongkut (1804-1868)

Probably the best-known king of Siam in the West, Mongkut was portrayed in the 1951 Broadway musical "The King and I" and later in a 1956 Hollywood film.&nbsp;

Under growing Western pressure during his 17-year reign, Mongkut signed the Bowring Treaty with the British Empire that abolished a royal monopoly over foreign trade.&nbsp;

Mongkut later died from malaria that he contracted while on an expedition to see a total eclipse of the sun.&nbsp;

Rama V - King Chulalongkorn (1853-1910)

The 42-year reign of King Chulalongkorn, the son of Mongkut, was known for a modernization drive and abolition of slavery.

He also ceded territories to Western powers, including Laos and Cambodia to France, and the Malay sultanates of Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu and Perlis to Britain.

Chulalongkorn was the first Siamese king to send royal princes to study in Europe. He visited twice and presented Siam as a modern nation to European rulers.

Rama VI - King Vajiravudh (1881-1925)

Vajiravudh`s reign was characterized by the creation and promotion of Siamese nationalism.

He modernized the military and sent troops to join Allied forces in World War One.&nbsp;

He quashed an attempted coup in 1912 by disgruntled military officers who accused the king of financial extravagances and sought to establish a democratic rule.&nbsp;

Rama VII - King Prajadhipok (1893-1941)

Prajadhipok was Siam`s last absolute monarch and its first constitutional monarch after the Siamese Revolution of 1932.

Educated at Eton, he succeeded his brother in 1926. Six years later a group of military officers and civil servants initiated a near bloodless coup.

Prajadhipok abdicated in 1935 and spent the rest of his life with his wife in England.

The couple had no children.

Rama VIII - King Ananda Mahidol (1925-1946)

Ananda ascended to the throne after his uncle abdicated. His father, Prince Mahidol, was a son of King Chulalongkorn.

Ananda was nine years old and studying in Switzerland when he was chosen to succeed Prajadhipok.

The government changed the country`s name to Thailand in 1939.

In 1946, Ananda, 20, was found shot dead in his bedroom inside Bangkok`s Grand Palace in mysterious circumstances, four days before his planned return to school in Switzerland.&nbsp;

Rama IX - King Bhumibol Adulyadej (1927-2016)

Bhumibol succeeded his brother in 1946 and reigned for 70 years, the world`s longest reigning monarch when he died.

The American-born king became the face of Thailand, blending tradition with modernity and travelling the world with Queen Sirikit.

During his reign, the country had 30 prime ministers, 10 successful military coups and 17 constitutions.

His intervention in several political crises helped to end the bloodshed.&nbsp;

He was awarded the United Nations` first Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award for more than 3,000 royal development projects.&nbsp;

In a tradition dating to the 18th century, the Chakri kings have held the formal title Rama, after an avatar of Hindu god Vishnu in the ancient Indian epic the Ramayana. Here are details of the nine previous kings in the dynasty: Rama I - King Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke (born 1737-died 1809) Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke founded the Chakri dynasty and established Bangkok as the capital of Siam, as Thailand was known, in 1782. He ruled for 27 years and is best known for repelling the last major Burmese attack on Siam, known as the Nine Armies` Wars, from 1785 to 1786. Rama II - King Phra Buddha Loetla Nabhalai (1767-1824) King Phra Buddha Loetla Nabhalai succeeded his father in 1809 and ruled for almost 15 years. His reign was more peaceful. Art and literature flourished. The king was an avid composer of poetry, plays and songs. The most notable poet under the king`s patronage was Sunthorn Phu, known as the "the Shakespeare of Thailand" for his role in literature. Rama III - King Phra Nangklao (1788-1851) King Phra Nangklao reformed the tax and treasury system and oversaw a boom in trade with China during his 27-year rule from 1824. Siam renewed official contacts with western powers for the first time since the late Ayutthaya period, and supported the British in their first Anglo-Burmese War in 1824. The king did not name a successor and the throne passed to his half-brother. Rama IV - King Mongkut (1804-1868) Probably the best-known king of Siam in the West, Mongkut was portrayed in the 1951 Broadway musical "The King and I" and later in a 1956 Hollywood film. Under growing Western pressure during his 17-year reign, Mongkut signed the Bowring Treaty with the British Empire that abolished a royal monopoly over foreign trade. Mongkut later died from malaria that he contracted while on an expedition to see a total eclipse of the sun. Rama V - King Chulalongkorn (1853-1910) The 42-year reign of King Chulalongkorn, the son of Mongkut, was known for a modernization drive and abolition of slavery. Rama VI - King Vajiravudh (1881-1925) Vajiravudh`s reign was characterized by the creation and promotion of Siamese nationalism. He modernized the military and sent troops to join Allied forces in World War One. He quashed an attempted coup in 1912 by disgruntled military officers who accused the king of financial extravagances and sought to establish a democratic rule. Rama VII - King Prajadhipok (1893-1941) Prajadhipok was Siam`s last absolute monarch and its first constitutional monarch after the Siamese Revolution of 1932. Educated at Eton, he succeeded his brother in 1926. Six years later a group of military officers and civil servants initiated a near bloodless coup. Prajadhipok abdicated in 1935 and spent the rest of his life with his wife in England. The couple had no children. Rama VIII - King Ananda Mahidol (1925-1946) Ananda ascended to the throne after his uncle abdicated. His father, Prince Mahidol, was a son of King Chulalongkorn. Ananda was nine years old and studying in Switzerland when he was chosen to succeed Prajadhipok. The government changed the country`s name to Thailand in 1939. In 1946, Ananda, 20, was found shot dead in his bedroom inside Bangkok`s Grand Palace in mysterious circumstances, four days before his planned return to school in Switzerland. Rama IX - King Bhumibol Adulyadej (1927-2016) Bhumibol succeeded his brother in 1946 and reigned for 70 years, the world`s longest reigning monarch when he died. The American-born king became the face of Thailand, blending tradition with modernity and travelling the world with Queen Sirikit. During his reign, the country had 30 prime ministers, 10 successful military coups and 17 constitutions. His intervention in several political crises helped to end the bloodshed. He was awarded the United Nations` first Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award for more than 3,000 royal development projects.

Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn will be crowned this weekend in a pageantry-laden ceremony flecked by Hindu and Buddhist ritual, as Rama X furthers his primacy over one of the world's richest monarchies and a kingdom beset by ulcerous political divides.&nbsp;

The May 4-6 coronation comes more than two years after Vajiralongkorn ascended the throne at the death of his father Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Bhumibol reigned over seven tumultuous decades and was revered by Thais as a symbol of unity in a politically chaotic country.

His fiercely private 66-year-old son -- Rama X of the Chakri dynasty -- is less well-known by his subjects, and makes frequent trips overseas.

On Saturday at the auspicious hour of 10:09 am the public will be given a rare window into the heart of Thai power as blanket television coverage of the three-day coronation begins.

It will start with King Vajiralongkorn's "purification" by water drawn from ponds and rivers followed by a presentation of holy water by the top Buddhist patriarch and Chief Brahmin.

Then, as he sits underneath an ornate nine-tiered umbrella inside the Grand Palace, will be handed the diamond-encrusted Great Crown of Victory and issue his first royal command.

The rituals "are a symbolic system to upgrade the king from human to god", according to Tongthong Chandransu, a researcher of royal ceremonies.&nbsp;

The following day Thais, who have not witnessed a coronation since Bhumibol's in 1950, will see the newly-crowned monarch as he is carried on a palanquin for seven kilometres through Bangkok's historic heart.&nbsp;

"I'm excited, it's a rare event... everyone respects the monarchy, it is the spiritual anchor for Thais," Surasak Nantaket, a 20-year-old student, told AFP.&nbsp;

The government has set aside 1 billion baht ($31 million) for the ceremony, according to the deputy prime minister.

Queen Suthida

Inscrutable and powerful, Vajiralongkorn rarely addresses the Thai public, leaving his views broadly unknown and much of his private life a mystery and subject to gossip and conjecture.

In an unexpected twist late Wednesday, the palace named his consort -- and deputy head of his security -- Suthida Vajiralongkorn na Ayudhya as his fourth wife, making her Queen Suthida.

It has added to the mounting intrigue around the royal ceremony.

"Public curiosity, excitement and anticipation is naturally palpable and pervasive," said political analyst Thitinan Pongsudhirak.

The coronation "underscores the paramount role of the monarchy in Thai society".

Thailand's monarchy is protected by one of the world's harshest royal defamation laws, making criticism or full analysis inside the kingdom all but impossible.

The Thai constitutional monarchy was established in 1932.

But recent actions -- notably to extinguish a bid by his elder sister to run for premier -- have shown an increasingly assertive crown.

The kingdom has been cut by political divisions for more than 13 years, with coups and violence toppling short-lived civilian governments.

Full results from a contentious March 24 general election, the first since generals again seized power in 2014, are due to be announced on May 9.

Historically the monarchy and army have survived in partnership.

The ruling junta, led by former army chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha, wants to return as a civilian government and claims legitimacy from winning the popular vote.

But deadlock looms with an anti-junta bloc claiming most parliamentary seats and the right to form a government.

"The role of the crown will be key in restoring and ushering in some kind of a new normal, a new kind of political stability," said Thitinan.&nbsp;

Volunteer spirit

Since ascending the throne, Vajiralongkorn has repeatedly left his mark on the Thai bureaucracy.&nbsp;

Parliament has been shuttered since the palace reclaimed the land it stands on; police have been ordered to wear a short crew-cut, while the king's pointmen now sit on the influential privy council and manage his beefed-up security.

Significantly, the king transferred direct control of the Crown Property Bureau to himself, breaking the tradition of civilian stewardship of the hugely wealthy body.

In the absence of public debate on those moves, a wave of royal volunteerism has surged across the country ahead of the coronation.&nbsp;

Millions have signed up to clean streets, plant mangroves and repaint roads across the kingdom, while vast portraits of the king now stud virtually every street.

But not everyone is captivated by the ceremony.

"I'm not really interested," said one office worker, requesting anonymity, expressing concern at "changes under the new reign".

Thailand set for coronation of King Rama X, first in 69 years

Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn announced on Wednesday that he had married his consort, General Suthida Vajiralongkorn, and named her Queen Suthida.

The announcement, carried in the Royal Gazette, came just before the official coronation of the king, 66, on May 4-6.

Vajiralongkorn, also known by the title King Rama X, became constitutional monarch after the death of his revered father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, in October 2016, after 70 years on the throne.

In 2014, Vajiralongkorn appointed Suthida Tidjai, a former flight attendant for Thai Airways, as a deputy commander of his bodyguard unit.

Some royal observers and foreign media have linked Suthida romantically with the king, but the palace had previously never acknowledged a relationship between them.

The king made Suthida a full general in December 2016, and the deputy commander of the king's personal guard in 2017. He also made her a Thanpuying, a royal title meaning Lady.

While the king took the throne after the death of his father, his formal coronation follows a mourning period for King Bhumibol, whose royal cremation was held a year after his death.

Two people were killed and more than a dozen injured after a fire broke out at one of Bangkok's busiest shopping malls Wednesday evening, officials said.

The blaze at Central World broke out at around 6pm, a spokesperson for the Erawan Medical Emergency centre told reporters.

"One (person) died at the scene" and another at a nearby hospital, the spokesperson said.

Bangkok's governor Aswin Kwanmuang confirmed the two deaths.

"I have been informed that the fire was put down," he said in a press conference, adding that an investigation will commence tomorrow.

By 9 pm, the number of people injured had reached 17, said the Erawan Medical Emergency centre.

Footage circulating on social media earlier in the evening showed smoke billowing from the structure.

Employees of the mall stood outside as sirens blared, while firefighters and emergency medical staff moved the injured out on stretchers.&nbsp;

Police spokesperson Krissana Pattanacharoen said one person had leapt to their death.

The area around Central World is a popular shopping destination and was chock-full of tourists and rush-hour traffic.

A company representative told reporters the fire appeared to have started on the 8th floor, but had been contained and the building evacuated.

The mall is owned by Central Group, which is controlled by one of the wealthiest families in the country.

Against the tide: Thai 'floating temple' defies coastal erosion

Huang Wensi narrows her eyes and swings her fists towards her opponent, delivering a series of sharp punches before the referee finally separates the two, who have been duelling for seven rounds.

"I made it, my son!" screamed the 29-year-old as she danced in the ring before her rival, Thailand's Jarusiri Rongmuang, from whom she snatched away the Asia Female Continental Super Flyweight Championship gold belt at the match in Taipei.

The dreadlocks-wearing Huang is one of a small but growing number of women in China to embrace professional boxing, relishing its intense nature despite traditional stereotypes that steer women away from such activities.

As a mother, she is also a rarity within a small circle of professional female boxers and clinching her top title on her son's birthday last October made victory all the sweeter.

"A woman is not just limited to being a wife or mother in the house," said Huang, adding that her son, now aged 2-1/2, had jumped for joy during her video call to tell him of the win.

"I live for myself. This makes me truly happy. I hope there are more moms who could see this game. Besides living for family, you could also live for yourself."

Born in a small town in China's southern province of Guangdong, Huang started learning to box in 2002 after a coach spotted her potential at school. She joined a provincial team three years later, but retired in 2011, after an injury.

In 2015, she met the man who is now her husband and her son was born a year later. But after his birth, she suffered such severe depression that she was driven to contemplate suicide, she said.

That event spurred her comeback as a professional boxer, after spending a few years in gruelling practice to regain her physique and strength, said Huang, who also works as a teacher in the coastal city of Zhejiang.

"I knew that was my only way out." "Don't call me a king," she said. "Please call me the queen of the ring."

After the victory, fans and friends surrounded Huang to celebrate her medal.

Besides living for family, you could also live for yourself." Born in a small town in China's southern province of Guangdong, Huang started learning to box in 2002 after a coach spotted her potential at school. "Please call me the queen of the ring." After the victory, fans and friends surrounded Huang to celebrate her medal.

Thai demonstrators on Sunday protested against alleged cheating in the junta-ruled kingdom's first election since a 2014 coup, a week after the controversial poll sowed confusion over the ballot results.

A military-backed party and its main rival-led by a self-exiled billionaire have both claimed the right to lead the government as inconsistent tallies released by the Election Commission have raised suspicion among voters.

The junta-aligned Phalang Pracharat party clinched the popular vote but its rival Pheu Thai -- linked to former premier Thaksin Shinawatra -- has formed a coalition claiming a majority of seats in the lower house.

Full results will be ratified by May 9 but anger has mounted as the wait continues, prompting demonstrations at two Bangkok landmarks.&nbsp;

It featured the face of 2014 coup leader Prayut Chan-O-Cha, who is standing as the prime ministerial candidate for Phalang Pracharat.

"It is the Pheu Thai party which won the election," organiser and activist Anurak Jeantawanich said.

Demonstrators were collecting signatures for a petition to demand the dismissal of Election Commission members, who have conceded some errors in tabulation but stand by the latest figures.

Thai demonstrators protest alleged cheating in election

Thailand`s opposition "democratic front" of seven parties on Wednesday said it had won a majority in the lower house of parliament after a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/charges-of-cheating-amid-confusion-over-thailands-election-result-205533">messy </a><a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/charges-of-cheating-amid-confusion-over-thailands-election-result-205533">election</a>, and had the right to try to form a government after five years of military rule.

But the opposition alliance would still be unable to elect a prime minister, as parliamentary rules, written by the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/thailands-coup-leader-democratic-front-face-off-in-long-awaited-election-205249">ruling military junta</a>, require backing from a majority of upper and lower houses combined.

Parliament`s upper house, entirely appointed by the junta, is expected to endorse the pro-military party.&nbsp;

With unofficial results of Sunday`s vote still delayed, the ruling junta showed no sign giving up on its goal to keep former army chief and coup leader Prayuth Chan-ocha as prime minister.

The post-election standoff could raise tension just as the Southeast Asian country prepares for the elaborate coronation of its new king in May.

Sudarat Keyuraphan, the main prime ministerial candidate of the Pheu Thai party ousted by the 2014 army coup, said the seven parties in the opposition alliance would take at least 255 seats in the 500-member House of Representatives.

"We declare that the democratic front which opposes military rule commands the majority in the House," Sudarat told reporters.

The largest alliance in the lower house should be given the right to try to form a government, she added.

"Parties in the democratic front gained the most trust from the people," Sudarat said, adding that the alliance would start courting more parties on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Pheu Thai`s secretary-general, Phumtham Wechayachai, told reporters the democratic front now included the Future Forward, Pheu Chart, Prachachart, Seri Ruam Thai, Thai People Power and New Economy parties.&nbsp;

Missing was the Bhumjaithai Party, another key vote-getter that has not yet aligned with either side.&nbsp;

Responding to speculation that Pheu Thai would offer the top post to Bhumjaithai`s leader, Anutin Charnvirakul, to win him over, Phumtham said, "We haven`t made him that offer."&nbsp;

He added, "Premiership is something we will discuss later... It`s not a pre-condition for us."&nbsp;

A fuller picture of the lower house make-up could emerge on Friday, when the election commission releases vote tallies for each constituency, used to determine the allocation of the other 150 party seats under a complex formula.&nbsp;

After the news conference, the alliance`s party leaders petitioned the election commission to immediately release complete tallies, demanding transparency.&nbsp;

Ittiporn Boonprakong, the commission`s chairman, said the votes were all counted in the open and announced at polling stations the night of the election.&nbsp;

"STILL TIME YET"&nbsp;

The pro-military Palang Pracharat party has also claimed the right to form the next government, based on its early lead in the popular vote, saying the count could still give it a majority.

Its leader, Uttama Savanayana said Palang Pracharat was taking its time as there are six weeks until official results are published on May 9.&nbsp;

"We`ve started talking to other parties, but there`s still time yet," Uttama told reporters. "We`ll try to get as many seats as possible. We`re confident we can form a government."&nbsp;

Party secretary-general Sontirat Sontijirawong dismissed the claim by the democratic front.

"Stop claiming to be on the side of democracy," Sontirat said. "This election was democratic. Are the 7.9 million who voted for Palang Pracharat not democratic?"&nbsp;

The partial count suggests Palang Pracharat could win enough elected lower house seats, combined with votes from the junta-appointed Senate, for Prayuth to stay on as prime minister.&nbsp;

However, Prayuth could face parliamentary deadlock if the opposition controls the lower house, and would be vulnerable to a confidence vote.

Thailand's opposition parties form alliance, demand junta step aside

Thailand heads to polls after 8 years

Voting ends in Thailand's first polls since 2014 military coup

Hundreds of thousands of voters crowded into schools, parking lots and temples across <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/weightlifting-thailand-to-host-world-championships-despite-voluntary-ban-202050">Thailand</a> on Sunday, eager to cast an early ballot a week before the country's first election in eight years.

Advanced voting is usually a tepid affair, but on Sunday excitement was high as voters turned up in droves to polling stations.

More than 2.3 million Thais are expected to vote before the official March 24 poll date.

Since a 2014 coup ousted then-premier Yingluck Shinawatra, the junta has repeatedly postponed democratic elections - much to the chagrin of the Thai public.&nbsp;

'I finally have a chance to cast my vote as I've waited for so long,'&nbsp;said 48-year-old Paka Kaengkhiew as she stood in line in front of Bangkok's Phra Khanong district office.&nbsp;

In Dusit district - home to military offices and government buildings - voters piled into a schoolyard before a polling station there opened.&nbsp;

People dressed in their work clothes -- military uniforms, hospital scrubs, and more casual attire - waited patiently to cast their ballot, aided by student helpers.

At 9.00 am Prem Tinsulanonda, the head of the Privy Council - the advisory board to Thai King Maha Vajialongkon - arrived at the school.

Watched by Thai and international media, the 98-year-old carrying an oxygen tank was pushed in a wheelchair into a classroom boasting a portrait of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who he advised, before walking the final steps to a polling booth.

The former general was briefly installed as the temporary regent for Thailand's revered monarchy following the death of the late king before King Vajiralongkorn took over, cementing Prem's role as one of the most powerful - and enduring - players in the Machiavellian game of Thai politics. &nbsp;

More than 51 million Thais are eligible to vote in the official March 24 election, which will be held under a new military-scripted constitution.&nbsp;

There are 'high expectations'&nbsp;for this year's election, said Sudarat Keyuraphan, a prime ministerial candidate for Pheu Thai -- the party which garnered the most parliamentary seats in 2011's election, and is loathed by the military.&nbsp;

'The (junta) says the country is under peace and order but... the people have no hope,'&nbsp;she told reporters at the Pheu Thai headquarters. "We are confident... we will be the party that voters go for the most."

Analysts say the new electoral system favors the Army-aligned party fronted by junta leader Prayut Chan-O-Cha, who is running to be civilian prime minister after a government is formed.

But voters on Sunday still held on to hopes for change.&nbsp;

'I vote today in the hope for better change,'&nbsp;said Mart Bupa, 53.&nbsp;

Thailand's early voting kicks off with long queues

Methamphetamine production has reached "unprecedented levels" in Southeast Asia and has expanded its market in the eastern part of the continent, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said on Monday.

The experts pointed out to the Golden Triangle region - where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet - as the main origin of methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs and said that they are trafficked to neighbouring countries in the region and beyond.

In the year 2018, at least 116 tons of methamphetamine was seized in the region, which was 30 per cent more than the year before.

"Volumes of methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs originating from the Golden Triangle to Thailand have reached unprecedented levels", said Niyom Termsrisuk, Secretary-General of the Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) of Thailand.

"Large amounts of synthetic drugs have been trafficked to neighbouring countries in the region, but also further," Niyom added.

The increase in the production of methamphetamine is leading to a decline in the price of the drug on the black market and an increase has been registered in the confiscations by the authorities.

"The challenge is growing, and it is critical we work with UNODC and the region to curtail flows of precursor chemicals that are being used to produce methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs," Niyom said in a statement released by UNODC.

The organization explained the growing trend of expansion of methamphetamine in East Asia - China registered a record number of seizures last year - and other substances produced in the laboratories situated in the Golden Triangle region.

"Aside from methamphetamine which is getting most of the attention because of the surge in seizures and street price drops, synthetic opioids and other drugs have also been found across the region", said Jeremy Douglas, UNODC Regional Representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

“National leadership and authorities are starting to come to terms with how profoundly synthetics are changing the drug market, and we hope they use the coming Mekong Ministerial Meeting in Bangkok and ASEAN leadership meetings to reflect on the situation and their strategy – this is not business as usual, and it is past time to change the response," Douglas added.&nbsp;

Thailand has voluntarily banned itself from all weightlifting, including the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, because of its recent doping record but will still host the 2019 World Championships, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) said on Friday.

Six Thai weightlifters tested positive for banned substances at last year's World Championships, two of whom are reigning Olympic champions, while two further doping cases are yet to be resolved since December 2017.

Any nation with three or more positives in a calendar year faces a ban of up to four years and the IWF has previously suspended nine countries for repeated doping offences.

However, the IWF Executive Board voted to allow Thailand to host the World Championships despite none of their lifters taking part.

"TAWA (Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association) still continues to fulfil its obligation and will deliver the organisation of the 2019 IWF World Championships despite the fact that no Thai athletes will be entitled to participate," the IWF said in a statement https://www.iwf.net/2019/03/08/iwf-executive-board-meeting-congress-las-vegas.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) meets on March 26 to discuss progress in cleaning up the sport and the IWF's decision to allow Thailand to host the World Championships is expected to be discussed.

Weightlifting is effectively 'on probation' at Tokyo 2020, with the IWF having been told to clean up the sport if it is to be on the 2024 Olympic programme.

Weightlifting: Thailand to host World Championships despite voluntary ban

Thailand's Constitutional Court on Thursday ordered the dissolution of an opposition party for nominating the king's sister as its candidate for prime minister in a March 24 election.

Banning the Thai Raksa Chart party just over two weeks before the general election struck a blow to opposition parties'&nbsp;chances of defeating parties allied to the military junta that has ruled since a coup d'etat in 2014.

"The court has ordered that the party be dissolved," Judge Taweekiet Meenakanit said in the ruling, which also banned the party's executive board members from politics for 10 years.

Thai Raksa Chart is one of several parties loyal to ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in an election that broadly pits his supporters against establishment parties, including one that has junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha as its prime ministerial candidate.&nbsp;

Police had deployed more than 1,000 officers in and around the court and cordoned off the surrounding area ahead of the ruling.

Party leader Preechapol Pongpanich, who was visibly emotional, told reporters outside the court the party accepted the ruling.

"We all had good intentions for the country," he said.

Supporters were seen crying, saying they would vote instead for other opposition parties.

The Election Commission asked the court to dissolve the party after it nominated Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi for prime minister, which the commission described as "antagonistic toward the constitutional monarchy".

The princess relinquished her royal titles in 1972 but is still officially treated as a senior member of the royal family, which is highly revered in Thailand.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn strongly opposed his sister's nomination, calling it "inappropriate" and unconstitutional and her candidacy was swiftly disqualified by the Election Commission.

While Thai Raksa Chart is not the largest pro-Thaksin party, dissolving it would weaken his supporters'&nbsp;strategy of fielding several separate parties in the hope of securing more seats for Thaksin loyalists.

Moving ahead

New electoral rules put in place by the outgoing military government benefit smaller parties at the expense of the top vote-winning parties when 150 "party seats" are shared out in the 500-seat House of Representatives.&nbsp;

The other 350 seats are directly elected.

"Dissolving Thai Raksa Chart ... would lead to a kind of disenfranchisement because Thai Raksa Chart forms a large chunk of the pro-Thaksin party team," Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political scientist at Chulalongkorn University, told Reuters before the ruling.

The princess, who broke with royal tradition by attempting to enter politics, is in Germany, according to her posts on Instagram.&nbsp;

She did not make a direct reference to the court ruling but said on Thursday: "Today, I want to continue moving ahead in working for Thailand."

Thaksin's opponents have sought to portray his movement as insufficiently loyal to the monarchy - which the self-exiled Thaksin vehemently denies - and Thai Raksa Chart's nomination of the king's sister was intended to refute that assertion.

But Thitinan said the banning of Thai Raksa Chart was unlikely to result in fewer votes for pro-Thaksin parties and more for pro-military ones. Voters who had been aiming to support it would simply switch to another pro-Thaksin party.

"The structure of Thailand's polarisation with Thaksin and what he stood for as the fault line remains more or less the same," he said.

The princess, who broke with royal tradition by attempting to enter politics, is in Germany, according to her posts on Instagram. She did not make a direct reference to the court ruling but said on Thursday: "Today, I want to continue moving ahead in working for Thailand." Thaksin's opponents have sought to portray his movement as insufficiently loyal to the monarchy - which the self-exiled Thaksin vehemently denies - and Thai Raksa Chart's nomination of the king's sister was intended to refute that assertion.

Thai court bans party for nominating princess for Prime Minister

Top Asian rice exporting hubs India and Thailand were hit by slack demand with fresh overseas deals few and far between, while a booming harvest and stronger baht added further pressure on Thai markets.

In top exporter India, the benchmark 5 per cent broken parboiled variety was quoted around $378-$383 per tonne this week, down from last week's $380-$385 due to a depreciation in the rupee.

"Demand is modest. Prices are coming down due to a falling rupee," an exporter based at Kakinada in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh said.

The rupee is down about 2 per cent versus the dollar this year.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Bangladesh, imports slowed to 137,000 tonnes in July-February due to the imposition of a tax on rice imports in June, food ministry data showed.

The south Asian country, which emerged as a major importer in 2017 after floods wrought havoc on local crops, imposed the 28 per cent duty to support its farmers after local production revived.

Bangladesh imported a record 3.9 million tonnes of rice in the 2017-2018 financial year that ended in June 2018.

In Vietnam, rates for 5 per cent broken rice rose to $345 a tonne from $340 last week.&nbsp;

"Prices have edged up a bit after the government said it is buying rice from farmers for stockpiling," a trader based in Ho Chi Minh City said.

The country's rice exports in January-February were forecast to fall 4.9 per cent from a year earlier to 788,000 tonne, the government's General Statistics Office said on Thursday. Revenue from rice exports in the period was expected to drop 17.5 per cent to $335 million.

February rice exports from Vietnam, the world's third-largest shipper of the grain after Thailand, totalled 350,000 tonnes, worth $140 million, the GSO said.

Thailand's benchmark 5 per cent broken rice prices marginally narrowed to $383-$398, free on board Bangkok from $383-$405 quoted last week.

Fresh supplies of rice entering the market have pushed prices slightly lower and demand remains flat, traders said.

"Exporters are selling the rice at a lower price but there are no major deals at the moment that (could) impact prices," a Bangkok-based trader said.

While exporters still anticipate large deals from the Philippines, the strength of the local currency against the dollar makes Thai rice export less competitive, traders said.

"New supply has helped lower the price but the strong baht and the lack of demand remains two worrying factors for exporters," another Bangkok-based rice trader said.

Rice demand dwindles in top Asian exporters; Thai rates hit by fresh supplies

Leaders of Thailand's biggest opposition party campaigning on Monday never mentioned ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra, whose policies they espouse, nor the princess whose shock candidacy could see its ally banned from the March 24 election.

They didn't need to. Supporters in the northeastern stronghold of the Pheu Thai party are well aware of the complexities of the first general election since a 2014 coup - and are determined to return their party to power despite electoral rules limiting their voting power.

"How long have you all waited, how long have you all suffered?" asked Sudarat Keyuraphan, Pheu Thai's top prime ministerial candidate, asked supporters during a campaign stop in Ubon Ratchathani province.

"We all have to wait just a little while, until March 24. That day will be a day of victory for all of us!" she told the cheering crowd.

Pheu Thai is the largest of several parties in the election-linked to ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a 2006 coup and lives in self-exile after a corruption conviction he says was politically motivated.

The party and its offshoots retain support among rural farmers and the poor for their social welfare programmes, but they face an uphill battle in the election, with new rules that prevent any one party gaining a big majority.

Junta leader Prayuth Chan-Ocha, who as army chief in 2014 ousted the last civilian government, is also running, as the prime ministerial candidate of a new pro-military party.

Pro-Thaksin parties have won every election since 2001, but after Thaksin was ousted their successive governments have been ended either by court rulings or coups, with the most recent military takeover ousting a Pheu Thai government that Thaksin's sister, Yingluck, had led.

After nearly five years in power, the junta is in the process of choosing all 250 members of the Senate, which will elect a prime minister along with the 500-seat House of Representatives, putting pro-military forces at a significant advantage even before the election.

Supporters of Pheu Thai say the new rules are aimed at ridding the country of Thaksin's influence once and for all. The party has to distance itself from the former telecommunications tycoon because the law on political parties forbids outsiders from controlling or directing them.

But Thaksin's loyalists in Udon Ratchathani were undeterred.

"I think Pheu Thai will win by a landslide, despite what's happened, and regardless of the military-appointed Senate," said Kriangsak Lamun, 64.

Mathematically, however, Pheu Thai's chances of regaining power would be reduced even if it is the top vote-getter if one of its allied parties, Thai Raksa Chart, is disqualified.

As popular as ever

Thai Raksa Chart stunned the nation and electrified supporters on Feb. 8 with the surprise nomination of the king's older sister, Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi, as its sole prime ministerial candidate, breaking the tradition of royalty shunning politics.

The nomination drew a swift rebuke from King Maha Vajiralongkorn, and the princess was disqualified by the Electoral Commission. Now, her nominating party faces a possible ban in a Constitutional Court decision due later this month.

Thai Raksa Chart is one of at least three pro-Thaksin parties contesting the elections to help scoop up seats under the complex electoral laws that limit the impact of the largest party.

With Pheu Thai likely to be hamstrung by those rules, other pro-Thaksin parties such as Thai Raksa Chart and the Pheu Chart party are intended to gain some of the proportionally awarded seats that favour smaller parties.

If Thai Raksa Chart is disqualified, that safety net may disappear - making the headline-grabbing nomination of the princess seem like a miscalculation.

Die-hard supporters of Thaksin's populist policies were mixed in their opinions about Thai Raksa Chart's recruiting royalty, revered as semi-divine in Thai culture, into politics.

Some said they admired the princess as a candidate, while others found it inappropriate.

"I don't think it was a good move ... Royals should not get involved in politics," said Virat Laddabut, 55, though he said he wouldn't change his vote.

Another voter, Somchai Wongsa, said voters in the rural northeast would vote for pro-Thaksin parties whatever their name.

"It doesn't matter if Thai Raksa Chart is dissolved," he said.

"People here will still vote Pheu Thai. The party is as popular as ever."

Thai opposition party undeterred after ally's failed princess bid

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/thai-election-panel-disqualifies-princess-ubolratana-as-pm-candidate-196660">Thailand's Election Commission </a>said Wednesday it will ask the constitutional court to dissolve the party that put forward a princess name&nbsp;as prime ministerial candidate.

The move has come days after the king rebuked the move in a stern royal command. "The action is considered hostile to the constitutional monarchy," the king said.

Meanwhile, the Thai Princess Ubolratana's name had apologised after her short-lived candidacy for prime minister.

The apologies followed after&nbsp;her brother's (the king)&nbsp;rebuke&nbsp;sent jitters across the politically febrile country just weeks before elections.

Thailand has been mired in political drama since Friday when Princess Ubolratana's name was submitted as a prime ministerial candidate by the<a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/thai-party-leader-contrite-after-rebuke-for-princess-pm-candidacy-197005"> Thai Raksa Chart Party</a>.

The party is allied with the powerful Shinawatra clan, which has won all elections since 2001 but whose patron, the billionaire ex-premier Thaksin, lives in self-exile to avoid jail.

Ubolratana's unprecedented bid to enter frontline politics unravelled within hours after King Maha Vajiralongkorn decried the entry of a royal into the political fray as "highly inappropriate".

Thailand's monarchy is seen as above politics, although royals have intervened in public during times of political crisis.

The princess was disqualified as a prime ministerial candidate by the Election Commission on Monday, which cited the royal command. It is now discussing whether to refer Thai Raksa Chart to the consitutional court for dissolution.

In an Instagram post late Tuesday the 67-year-old princess apologised for her role in the drama.

"I'm sorry that my genuine intention to help work for the country and fellow Thai people has created a problem that shouldn't happen in this era," she wrote.

It was tagged with a hashtag: "#howcomeitsthewayitis".

Ubolratana is the first-born of former king Bhumibol Adulyadej, but she gave up her royal titles when she married an American in 1972.

After her divorce, she moved back to Thailand where she is regarded by the Thai public as a part of the royal family.

While she said she was exercising her rights as a commoner to stand for premier, the palace statement said she is "still a member of the House of Chakri", referring to the name of the dynasty.

The monarchy in Thailand is considered sacred and revered by its people, and is under the protection of draconian lese majeste laws. The king's word is considered final.

The scuttling of her candidacy and potential moves to dissolve the Thai Raksa Chart party is a blow to Thaksin Shinawatra's political machine.

The party was set to add to the vote bank of the bigger Shinawatra electoral vehicle, Pheu Thai, in an election where secondary parties are targeting seats via the party list system.

Thaksin and his sister Yingluck -- who was overthrown in the 2014 coup -- live abroad to avoid convictions they say are politically motivated.

Junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha, who toppled Yingluck's government, is running for prime minister in the March 24 poll.

Party executives from Thai Raksa Chart have expressed contrition after the upheaval, but said they would challenge any attempt to disband the party. A media organisation affiliated with the Shinawatras was also in the crosshairs this week.

Voice TV, owned by Thaksin's son Ponthongtae, was ordered Tuesday by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) to go off-air for 15 days after two of its programs caused "confusion and provocation".

Thai party leader contrite after rebuke for princess' PM candidacy

Refugee footballer Hakeem al-Araibi will not be sent back to Bahrain after Thailand dropped extradition proceedings against him on the Gulf State's request, a prosecutor said Monday.

Araibi, a former <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/dont-send-me-to-bahrain-refugee-footballer-hakeem-al-araibi-pleads-in-bangkok-194949">Bahraini national youth team player</a>, was granted refugee status in Australia after fleeing charges in the oil-rich kingdom connected to Arab Spring protests.

But was stopped in Thailand in November attempting to go on his honeymoon.

Since then, he has been detained in a Bangkok prison pending a court ruling over the extradition request from the Bahraini government —&nbsp;a move the footballer has pleaded against as he fears torture if returned.&nbsp;

Monday brought a stunning about-turn from the Bahraini government, which withdrew the extradition request, said Chatchom Akapin, Director-General of the International Affairs Department at the prosecutor's office.

"We have been informed that Bahrain wants to withdraw the (extradition) request.... if they don't want him, we have no reason to keep him here," he told AFP.&nbsp;

Chatchom added that the process to release Araibi is under way.&nbsp;

The Australian government has repeatedly called for Araibi's return and the case has become a cause celebre in the football world, with FIFA also urging the Thai premier to intervene.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) last week cancelled the under-23 men's national team&nbsp;plans to hold a training camp in Thailand ahead of the AFC U23 Championship qualifiers next month.

Refugee footballer Hakeem al-Araibi will not be sent back to Bahrain after Thailand dropped extradition proceedings against him on the Gulf State's request, a prosecutor said Monday. Araibi, a former Bahraini national youth team player, was granted refugee status in Australia after fleeing charges in the oil-rich kingdom connected to Arab Spring protests. But was stopped in Thailand in November attempting to go on his honeymoon. Since then, he has been detained in a Bangkok prison pending a court ruling over the extradition request from the Bahraini government — a move the footballer has pleaded against as he fears torture if returned. Monday brought a stunning about-turn from the Bahraini government, which withdrew the extradition request, said Chatchom Akapin, Director-General of the International Affairs Department at the prosecutor's office. "We have been informed that Bahrain wants to withdraw the (extradition) request.... if they don't want him, we have no reason to keep him here," he told AFP. Chatchom added that the process to release Araibi is under way. The Australian government has repeatedly called for Araibi's return and the case has become a cause celebre in the football world, with FIFA also urging the Thai premier to intervene. Football Federation Australia (FFA) last week cancelled the under-23 men's national team plans to hold a training camp in Thailand ahead of the AFC U23 Championship qualifiers next month. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison had also repeatedly pushed for his release, saying that he had written letters to his Thai counterpart Prayut Chan-O-Cha and stressed "how strongly Australians feel about this".
