Japan's Osaka left the claycourt Grand Slam on Monday after refusing to attend the mandatory post-match press conferences and revealing she had been suffering from bouts of depression for three years.

Where&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;goes next was no clearer four days after Osaka's exit although it is almost inconceivable that it will be business as usual following a global debate, which has centered on the Japanese player's right not to attend press conferences.

The same Grand Slam Committee which had threatened Osaka with fines and expulsion when the 23-year-old said she would not face the media after matches joined the outpouring of support for her mental health struggles following her exit.

Roland Garros organizers, the French&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;federation (FFT), said no changes will be made regarding players' press responsibilities for the ongoing edition of the claycourt Grand Slam.

Yet the global governing body, the International&nbsp;Tennis&nbsp;Federation (ITF), has promised a comprehensive review.

"Naomi Osaka's recent statements have shone a light on mental health issues, a matter that we all take extremely seriously," the ITF told Reuters.

"Tennis&nbsp;is aligned and will work together, with input from players and media amongst others, to review what needs to evolve across the sport as a whole.

"It's in all our interests to ensure that we continue to provide an environment that enables all stakeholders to do their job to their best ability, without impacting their health, and for the good of the sport."

Press conferences are obligatory when requested by the media at Grand Slams and even the smallest tournaments allow access to players before the start and if requested on match days, win or lose.

That could change, on the women's tour at least, after Osaka said that expecting players to answer questions after defeats amounted to "kicking a person while they're down".

The Women's&nbsp;Tennis&nbsp;Association (WTA) said it would also be launching a review.

"Similar to how we review various areas and processes within the tour, the WTA is committed to taking a comprehensive and holistic review of post-match press," the WTA said in a statement to Reuters.

Wimbledon organizers, who will host the grasscourt Grand Slam in three weeks, said changes would take time.

"Everyone has expressed a desire to work together to create meaningful improvements, so we'll give some space for that to begin," said an All England Club spokeswoman.

While a mental strain exemption could eventually find its place alongside physical injuries as reasons not to face the media at Grand Slams, press conferences have continued in Paris this week.

Many players have expressed support for Osaka in her battle with mental health issues but most have said they accept media duties as part of the job.

Karolina Muchova compared it to undergoing anti-doping tests and her fellow Czech Karolina Pliskova faced the media on Thursday after bowing out in the second round.

"I do press conferences basically after my match, no matter what is happening, if I win or if I lose," the former world number one said.

"I guess it was because there's curfew at 9. It's definitely a little different. Ironically enough night sessions are not my favourite matches, but I do have a good record at it."

In the men's draw, second seed Daniil Medvedev will be hoping to back up his first-ever French Open win by going deep into the tournament.

The two-time Grand Slam runner-up is in the half of the draw without any major champions -- with Dominic Thiem dumped out at the first hurdle and Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer all in the opposite side.

The Russian, who had lost in the opening round on all four of his previous appearances, will face Tommy Paul of the United States for a place in round three in the evening match.

"My opponent can see I was really feeling good," said Medvedev after his straight-sets victory over Alexander Bublik.

"I actually played much better in practice still than today, so there is room for improvement."

Despite Medvedev's loftier ranking, Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas is probably the favourite to reach the final from the bottom half.

The 22-year-old lost an epic five-set semi-final in Paris last October to Djokovic and also made the last four of the Australian Open in February.

Tsitsipas has been in excellent form on clay this year, winning the Monte Carlo Masters, the ATP event in Lyon and reaching the Barcelona Open final, where he lost to Nadal despite holding a match point.

He will take on 103rd-ranked Spaniard Pedro Martinez in round two.

Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas is brimming with confidence and will be heading to Roland Garros this week with his best Grand Slam preparation after picking up his seventh ATP Tour title in Lyon on Sunday.

Basking in the glow of his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title last month at Monte-Carlo, the 22-year-old added the Lyon crown for his second title in 2021 and leads the 2021 season with the most wins at 33.

"I've been feeling my game well; I've been using my patterns really well," Tsitsipas told reporters. "I've been pressing a lot with my serve. Just consistent on the court, consistent with my power and the way that I attack, and the way I take&nbsp;risks.

"I think it would be considered my best (preparation) so far pre-Grand Slam and now all the attention is on next week. I love playing in Paris. I find it mesmerizing."

Patrick Mouratoglou, the longtime coach of Serena Williams, who is often seen in Tsitsipas' player box at tournaments, is pleased with the consistency displayed by the Greek.

"He's developing really well," Mouratoglou said of Tsitsipas, who is coached by his father Apostolos. "He's always been able to beat the best players," the Frenchman, who often works in an advisory role with Tsitsipas, told Reuters recently.

The last four ATP Masters 1000 events -- the most prestigious tournaments outside the Grand Slams&nbsp;have been won by players outside the 'Big Three' of Djokovic, Rafa Nadal, and Roger Federer.

Russian Daniil Medvedev, 25, won the ATP Finals and the Paris Masters titles last year and has already displaced Spaniard Nadal from the second spot.

Hubert Hurkacz, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alexander Zverev have won the three Masters events this year with Greek Tsitsipas the youngest of them at 22.

Djokovic, 33, told reporters at the Rome Masters on Monday that the results showed there was a generational shift underway.

"There are guys like Tsitsipas, Zverev, (Matteo) Berrettini, (Andrey) Rublev that are winning against all of us and playing a lot and building their ranking points," he added.

"Medvedev as well, of course, and challenging for the top spots. Dominic Thiem has been there for many years.

While the 39-year-old Federer missed most of the last 14 months due to knee problems, Djokovic passed his record for the most weeks as world number one in March.

But the Serbian, who has won 18 Grand Slam titles, is more focused on chasing down the 20 major wins of Federer and the 34-year-old Nadal.

"I'm not personally paying too much attention anymore to the rankings as much as I am to my game for the Grand Slams," he said. "Those are the biggest focus tournaments right now at this stage of my career."

Djokovic has made changes to his schedule to spend more time with his family and since his Melbourne win has only played the Monte Carlo Masters and an event at home in Belgrade.

He will wind up his preparations for the French Open, which starts at the end of the month, with this week's Rome Masters and another ATP event in Belgrade.

"I want to play against the highest level players possible because I think that will help me improve my game quicker."

The Scot said he does not know if he will receive a wild card for the French Open, which is due to begin in Paris on May 30.

"I don't mind if they don't want to give me a wild card, that's fine, they can give them to whoever they want to," said Murray, who has played only three tournaments this year.
