According to recent satellite photographs, the Chinese military has improved its anti-ship missile training from targeting huge, carrier-sized targets to smaller ships and naval stations.According to a Taipei-based navy analyst, they show a training camp in Xinjiang's remote Taklamakan desert with the layout of a mock-up ship anchored in a naval base that mimics one in northeast Taiwan and other targets in Guam.

New satellite photographs, according to the US Naval Institute (USNI) news site, show China developing more large-scale target ranges along the rim of the desert, including model destroyers and docks.

The People's Liberation Army of China considers the United States to be a second line of defence east of Japan, with Guam being the most important base in the Marianas Islands chain. The US B-1, B-2, and B-52 strategic bombers are stationed at Guam's Andersen Air Force Base, with the latter two being capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Avril Haines, Director of US National Intelligence, has said that China is "working hard" to eventually exert influence over Taiwan's military.&nbsp;

Despite the United States' unwavering backing for the island nation, Haines told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday that the potential threat is "severe" over the next ten years, CNN reported. She refused to discuss the likely timeline identified by the US intelligence community in public.

The current Russia-Ukraine situation, as well as how Chinese President Xi Jinping and China's governing Communist Party (CCP) perceive the lessons of Western support, could affect the timing, according to the National Intelligence Agency chief.

"It's our view that (China is) working hard to effectively put themselves into a position in which their military is capable of taking Taiwan over our intervention," Haines said, as quoted by CNN.

According to US intelligence sources, Taiwan is anticipated to acquire some "valuable lessons" as the Ukraine war drags on for another three months, allowing the island nation to defend itself against a Chinese invasion.

"I think they are learning how important leadership is, how important small unit tactics are, how important a (non-commissioned) corps is, and really effective training with the right weapon system and what those systems with the right people would be able to do to thwart that," Lt. Gen. Berrier said, as quoted by CNN.

US warship sails through Taiwan Strait, China calls it 'provocative action'

Taiwan's defence ministry said on Tuesday that the island nation will incorporate lessons learnt from Russian invasion of Ukraine into upcoming military exercises. The military exercises are aimed at practising repelling a Chinese attack.

China claims Taiwan as its own territory. Ever since Russian invasion, Taiwan has raised its alert level to fend off a possible Chinese attack.

The defence ministry said this year's Han Kuang exercises, Taiwan's largest annual war games, would be split into two parts, in May and July.

The May part would partly be a tabletop exercise based on "various possible actions of the Chinese Communist Party in recent years to invade Taiwan, taking into account the lessons of the Russian-Ukrainian war", it said in a statement.

The ministry added that there will be five days of drills with Taiwanese soldiers taking part. There will be live-fire exercises.

The focus of the military exercise will be to attack &nbsp;enemy at sea, preserving combat forces and "integrating the total force of the whole people to support military operations", a reference to civil defence and reservist reforms that aim to improve Taiwan's ability to fight a war with China.

While Taiwanese officials have seen many parallels in the Ukraine war and their own situation, including having their own giant neighbour with territorial ambitions, they have also pointed to major differences.

There is a "natural barrier of the Taiwan Strait. This may put China in a relatively difficult position putting troops on the ground.

They continue to witness food and medicine shortages and heavy social media censorship. Frustration is mounting among millions of residents as the promise of easing lockdown remains yet to be fulfilled.

The city officials via social media have ruled out any possibility of immediate easing of restrictions. There is much frenzy on the diplomatic front too. China has signed a security pact with the Solomon Island, and this move has caused panic in Washington and Canberra. This week, in Chinese Vignettes we cover all the top stories making news in China.

China over the week

Covid Cases in Shanghai &nbsp;

China’s financial capital Shanghai has reported a total of 138 Covid-related deaths this week as it continues to battle its worst Covid outbreak. The city is also reporting an increase in symptomatic infections this week.&nbsp;

Even after more than three weeks in strict lockdown, the city of 26 million continues to live in uncertainty. All possible measures are being taken to not only curb the virus but also the public display of frustration related to the lockdown as authorities continue to censor social media.&nbsp;

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/covid-woes-continue-in-shanghai-over-21000-cases-reported-in-24-hours-473381/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

On Saturday, pictures of Shanghai authorities erecting mesh barriers outside some residential buildings went viral, sparking fresh outcry over the nearly month-long lockdown.&nbsp;

The posts show white hazmat suit-clad workers sealing the entrances of these buildings. &nbsp;

“This is so disrespectful of the rights of the people inside, using metal barriers to enclose them like domestic animals,” says a Chinese netizen on social media platform Weibo.&nbsp;

While other videos show residents complaining about the lack of food and other essentials. A six-minute video titled “The Voice of April”, containing a montage of voices recorded over the course of the 28-day lockdown became a victim of censorship.&nbsp;

All direct references to the video were taken down by Weibo, however some comments have managed to evade it.&nbsp;

"I can only say that if you don't even want to listen to just a small amount of real voices, then it is really hopeless," said one.&nbsp;

While another mentioning Dr. Li Wenliang said "Dr. Li, after two years nothing has changed, we still can't open our mouths, still can't speak." Dr. Li Wenliang passed away two years ago; he was one of the doctors who was reprimanded by the Chinese authorities for sharing “false” information about this infectious disease in late 2019. &nbsp;

Adding to the woes was a horrifying video of big green bags stuffed with cats and dogs. &nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/watch-bags-full-of-cats-and-dogs-seen-in-china-as-authorities-kill-pets-of-covid-positive-owners-472239">Watch: Bags full of cats and dogs seen in China as authorities kill pets of COVID positive owners</a>

"People are committing suicide from their balconies and pets from people getting tested positive for #Covid are being collected to be killed and slaughtered in #Shanghai / #China This is pure evil!" said the caption accompanying the video on Twitter. &nbsp;

Furthermore, city residents were also ordered to ‘throw away food they received from the government after complaints about quality issues,’ according to Bloomberg. Some neighborhoods allegedly received ‘moldy braised duck and meatballs or issues with the packaging of food.’&nbsp;

On Thursday, the hashtag calling for probe was trending on Weibo after residents complained of stomachaches and diarrhoea after eating food they’d received on Wednesday. &nbsp;

This week, the Global Times reported that three officials of a funeral home in Shanghai had been punished for ‘refusing to provide funeral service with the excuse of epidemic prevention,’ taking the total number to at least 15.&nbsp;

On the other hand, the country’s capital Beijing has also kicked off a three-day mass testing as it reported 41 cases triggering panic buying.&nbsp;

&nbsp;China signs two important treaties&nbsp;

This week, China signed two treaties. One on the domestic front and one on the international. &nbsp;

At home, it ratified the much talked about treaties on forced labour amid rising criticism over its treatment of Uyghur minority group. &nbsp;

On Wednesday, China’s top legislative body decided to sign onto the Forced Labor Convention of 1930 and Abolition of Forced Labor Convention of 1957, according to website of the National People’s Congress.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The alleged ill-treatment of Uyghurs has also been a point of contention between China and the West.&nbsp;

Last year, US&nbsp;President Joe Biden signed the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which bans imports of good from Xinjiang. China’s deal with the European Union was also paused after sanctions were imposed last year.&nbsp;

Beijing has always dismissed these claims and repeatedly called it “the biggest lie of the century.” On Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said, “those U. researchers’ conclusions are nothing but ill-intentioned smears against China.”&nbsp;

Treaty no. 2 which China signed this week was a security pact with the Solomon Islands.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, Beijing confirmed that it has signed the pact which would allow them to dock warships in the Pacific Islands.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin confirmed that Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Solomon Islands counterpart, Jeremiah Manele had “officially signed the inter-governmental framework agreement on security cooperation between the two countries the other day.”&nbsp;

Neither of the nations published the details of the pact, but a draft which had circulated online in March alarmed the U.S. and Australia and drew objections from them.&nbsp;

For Washington and Canberra by allowing Beijing to dock military ships in Solomon Islands it could use the forces ‘to protect the safety of Chinese citizens and major projects,’ said the Wall Street Journal.&nbsp;

On Monday, before the signing of the document between the Solomon Islands and China, U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said that “such an agreement could increase destabilization within the Solomon Islands and will set a concerning precedent for the wider Pacific Island region.”&nbsp;

While Wang Wenbin suggested in his daily press conference that U.S. had neglected the Pacific archipelago. And the agreement relates to cooperation in maintaining social order, protecting citizens and property, providing humanitarian assistance, and boosting the national security of the pacific nation. &nbsp;

While Wang Wenbin clarified that the agreement “doesn’t target any third party”, Australia, which is one of the closest neighbours of the Islands also expressed deep disappointment. &nbsp;

“We are concerned about the lack of transparency with which this agreement has been developed, noting its potential to undermine stability in our region,” said Marise Payne, Australia’s minister for foreign affairs, and Zed Seselja, minister for the Pacific, in a joint statement. And that Australia was seeking further clarity on the matter.&nbsp;

China in world reportage

Taiwan TV Station mistakenly reports Chinese Attack&nbsp;

This week, Chinese Television Systems, a Taiwan government-backed news channel mistakenly reported a Chinese attack in Taipei.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, the channel ran the news in the ticker at the bottom of the screen that military ships and critical infrastructure near the capital had been struck by Chinese missiles. &nbsp;

The alerts included messages such as "a war could break out", a major train station in Taipei being set fire by "Chinese agents" and Taiwan's president declaring a state of emergency,’ reported Reuters. And items ‘such as “on the brink of war”, “vessel explodes in Taipei harbour, facilities and ships destroyed”, and “New Taipei City hit by PLA ground force missiles”, ’ reported the South China Morning Post.

The station issued an on-air apology, "Citizens, please don't be overly panicked. We hereby clarify the information and apologise," said the anchor during the 10 a.m. bulletin. And clarified that the alerts were meant for a drill with the Fire Department and had been mistakenly displayed due to a technical error.

This mistake has cost two senior managers their jobs, reported the South China Morning Post. &nbsp;

Taiwan is developing new advanced missiles and drones&nbsp;to attack enemy air bases according to its military-owned National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology.

The country's defence ministry has said that it is planning to double Taiwan's annual missile production capacity.

"It could greatly boost the national army's capacity to delay or paralyse the Communist forces' pace of an invasion of Taiwan, making it hard for them to achieve a rapid war," a researcher at Taipei-based National Policy Foundation, Chieh Chung told Reuters.

Political analysts have predicted that China can use Russia's invasion of Ukraine as an opportunity to attack Taiwan.

Beijing claims Taiwan is an inalienable part of the country under the ''one-China'' policy and if it resists it will be seized by force.

According to M. Taylor Fravel, director of the security studies program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “The big question Xi Jinping and the PLA leadership must be asking in light of Russian operations in Ukraine is whether a military that has undergone extensive reform and modernisation will be able to execute operations that are far more complex than those Russia has undertaken during its invasion of Ukraine.”

"China hopes to establish a healthy and stable major-country relationship with the US, and will also defend its national interests and dignity."&nbsp;

“Beijing demands that the United States stop military provocations at sea and not use the Ukrainian issue to discredit, frame, threaten and pressure China,” he added.

Taiwan's President Tsai-ing Wen had approved an additional $8.20 billion in military spending last year due to a rise in the number of Chinese planes breaching Taipei's air defence identification zone.

This will be utlised for on anti-ship weapons such as mass-produced homegrown missiles and ''high-performance'' ships.

Calling Taiwan, the champion of "asymmetric warfare," Tsai said modernising the country's military is a top priority.

With an eye on China, Taiwan is developing new advanced missiles, drones

A government-backed television station in Taiwan has to apologise on Wednesday (April 20) after it mistakenly reported a Chinese attack in Taipei.&nbsp;

During a live news broadcast on Wednesday morning, Chinese Television System mistakenly showed news ticker alerts at the bottom of the screen about military ships and critical infrastructure near Taipei being hit by Chinese missiles, according to local media reports.

The alerts included words like "A war could break out". The news elements also conveyed that a major train station in Taipei was set on fire by "Chinese agents" and Taiwan's president declared a state of emergency.

The channel eventually had to apologise and appeal for calm.

"Citizens, please don't be overly panicked. We hereby clarify the information and apologise," an anchor said in the network's news bulletin at 10 a.m.

She said the alerts were meant for a drill with the Fire Department in New Taipei City on Tuesday but were mistakenly displayed on Wednesday morning because of a technical error.

There were no overt signs of panic in Taipei after the accidental bulletins.

China openly states Taiwan to be its own territory and has never ruled out use of force to take control of the island nation.

Taiwan has raised its alert level since Russia invaded Ukraine, wary of China making a similar move, though the government has not reported any signs an attack is imminent.

The war in Ukraine, which Russia calls a "special military operation", has prompted debate on the implications for Taiwan and ways to boost preparedness, such as reforms to the training of reservists.

The US State Department has approved a potential sale of defence equipment to Taiwan. The Pentagon said that the package will include equipment, training and other items to support the Patriot Air Defense System in a deal valued at up to $95 million. It can be a boost to Taiwan's air defence system as Chinese-claimed Taiwan has constantly complained of increased military pressure by Beijing. Taiwan also mentions a possible invasion by China that regards the democratically ruled island as its territory and has vowed repeatedly to seize it one day, by force if necessary. Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement, "The proposed sale will help to sustain the recipient's (Taiwan's) missile density and ensure readiness for air operations." A boost to Taiwan as US approves $95 million sale of defence support

Taiwan's defence ministry has set up a working group to study the&nbsp;tactics&nbsp;of the&nbsp;war&nbsp;in&nbsp;Ukraine, including how the country has been able to hold out against Russia, and has been&nbsp;discussing&nbsp;this with the United States, its minister said on Thursday.

The leaked document says the Solomon Islands, which lies east of Papua New Guinea, could “request China to send police, armed and military personnel and other law enforcement agencies” to the country.

Chiu Kuo-cheng, minister of defence, said the government would not make any changes immediately, but he pledged to release the results of its internal research regardless of what they decide.

In response to questions from lawmakers, Chiu said that proposals for extending military service were still being considered and a plan would "definitely" be presented this year.

"Currently, we are still in the research stage. This year we will definitely have results."&nbsp;

"We must consider the enemy situation and our defensive operations in terms of military strength," he said.
