<p>“If peaceful means didn’t work then would employ coercive means, and possibly if coercive means don’t work then maybe forceful means to achieve its objective. That is what is profoundly disrupting the status quo and creating tremendous tensions.”</p>

<p>Speaking of the viral videos, officer Michael Vega added: "It’s a shadow of a person walking. If you look at the beginning of the clip, you can see the person at the bottom of the shadow. "If there was any creature, myself and other officers would have our handgun, rifle, and shotgun out while we hide behind our cars," he added.</p>

'No compromise on freedom,' Taiwan responds after Xi Jinping's remarks at CPC congress

<p>Wu Renhua, who is an exiled Chinese protester and historian weighed in on China's 20th Party Congress, stating that after the event, Beijing might accelerate and push harder for the so-called Taiwan reunification.&nbsp;</p>

<p>President Xi Jinping is expected to win a third five-year term as general secretary of the ruling party at the congress to be held in Beijing from Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"But I feel the US will not return to the past, because during the Xi era, the US has realised that it is "nurturing a tiger and inviting calamity" and that China has replaced Russia to become America's biggest competitor and enemy," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;a Communist Party spokesman said on Saturday that the nation reserves&nbsp;the right to use force over Taiwan as a last resort in compelling circumstances, though peaceful reunification is its first choice.&nbsp;</p>

In a report to Taiwan’s legislative yuan this week, the interior ministry said the number of new conscripts in 2022 would be the lowest level in a decade.</p>

<p>The reports says that the number of people estimated to be over the age of 18 fell from 138,000 in 2017 to 118,000 in 2022.</p>

<p>“If the number of young people who will be 18 years old in the next few years is estimated, based on the year of birth and the number of babies, there will be a sharp drop, which shows that the recruitment of various volunteer recruitment units will face huge challenges in the future,” it said.</p>

<p>Some reports also suggest that the length of mandatory military service for young men is expected to be increased from the current four months. Taiwan's military is a mix of volunteer force combined with male conscripts. But in March, the number of volunteers recruited reached only 85.3 per cent of its target.</p>

<p>Taiwan has one of the world’s lowest birth rates which is witnessing a further fall. In 2021, Taiwan witnessed a record low of 153,820 registered births. In 2011, there were 196,627.</p>

<p>The low scale of salary is also a major deterrent for youngsters, besides the fact that the policy ages people out of active duty at 45.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Seoul’s programme offers free sanitary pads in at least 300 institutions across the capital city, including museums, libraries and so on. Meanwhile, the Tokyo city government reportedly began distributing sanitary products, earlier this year, in some of the washrooms at its headquarters.&nbsp;<br />

It was highly criticised by Taiwan's ambassador to Washington, Hsiao Bi-Khim, who took it to Twitter and posted, "Any lasting proposal for our future must be determined peacefully, free from coercion, and respectful of the democratic wishes of the people of Taiwan." She further said that Taiwan's democracy and freedom are not for sale.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Taiwan is hoping to adopt Ukraine's strategy of training and mobilising its citizens to work with the military. Tsia said, "Every citizen is a guardian of our nation."</p>

<p>The 23-million nation has been under constant invasion threat from China. Beijing has always claimed Taiwan as part of its province.</p>
