China on Tuesday (April 25) charged a Taiwanese man of "secession". The man has been held by Chinese authorities for eight months. Taipei condemned the move as a rights violation which it said was meant to "create fear".

Yang Chih-yuan was arrested and charged with secession by prosecutors in the eastern Chinese city Wenzhou, China's Supreme People's Procuratorate said.

"The case is under further processing," the state prosecutor's office added in a post on social media, without providing further details.

Yang (33) is a vice-chairperson of a minor political party which advocates for Taiwan's independence. According to Taiwanese media, he once ran unsuccessfully for the island's parliament.

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), Taiwan's top China policy-making body, said Yang has been detained since August last year.

"The government stresses again that Yang is innocent and urges the Chinese Communist Party to release him so he can return to Taiwan as soon as possible," MAC said in a statement.

"The Chinese side's arbitrary arrests of Taiwanese people seriously hurt the rights and interests of our people and create fear".

China considers Taiwan to be its own territory and has not ruled out use of force to capture the democratically ruled island nation.

President Giammattei is on a trip to Taiwan. "I want everyone to trust that Guatemala will continue to be a solid diplomatic ally to the Republic of Taiwan and will continue to deepen cooperation in all areas," Giammattei said at a welcoming ceremony outside Taiwan's presidential office and pointed out that Guatemala and Taiwan were "brotherly countries," the news agency Reuters reported.&nbsp;

The Guatemalan president referred twice to the "Republic of Taiwan", rather than its official name the Republic of China. He ended his speech with a rousing "Long live free Taiwan", receiving a broad smile from Taiwanese President Tsai who thanked him.&nbsp;

Later while addressing Taiwan's parliament, Alejandro Giammattei continued to refer to the "Republic of Taiwan", and won a standing ovation from lawmakers with a further strong message of support, ending that speech with: "Long live Taiwan: free, sovereign and independent".

Guatemala remains one of the 13 countries with official diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Last month, Honduras abandoned Taiwan for China after asking for almost $2.5 billion in aid.

On Monday, senior Guatemalan financial officials said that Guatemala City was not asking for free money from Taiwan and did not owe a debt in the same way Honduras did, but was looking for long-term investment and trade.&nbsp;

Guatemalan Economy Minister Janio Rosales, who accompanied President Giammattei to Taiwan, told Reuters that his country did not have a debt problem with Taiwan but wanted more balanced trade.&nbsp;

"We want to have a better-balanced trade, so what we are promoting is for more investment from enterprises from Taiwan to Guatemala and to extend cooperation between the two countries. It has been a great alliance," Rosales said.&nbsp;

Alvaro Gonzalez Ricci, the governor of Guatemala's central bank, meanwhile, said "I think we can ask Taiwan (for things) but not free money. Maybe they can invest in some bonds of Guatemala for example, and find projects that can last for 25, 30 years, not just donations to certain projects in the short-run."&nbsp;

Earlier this month, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen visited Guatemala where she offered more cooperation with Giammattei's government.

Before Giammattei's visit, China- which claims Taiwan as its territory- warned that Guatemala should not help “independence attempts” by Taiwanese authorities.

"The one-China principle is an accepted norm in international relations and a universal consensus of the international community. There is no way for Taiwan's independence. Any move that ignores the world trend and international justice and stubbornly adheres to the wrong position is doomed to failure,"&nbsp;Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on April 19.

"We would also like to advise the government of Guatemala not to help the evil-doer and go against the international trend and the voice of the Guatemalan people for its own selfish interests," Wenbin added.&nbsp;

The statement was issued by Manila’s foreign ministry after the talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang and Philippine foreign secretary Enrique Manalo as the two countries have sought to deepen economic ties while also managing their dispute in the South China Sea.&nbsp;

“The logic is absurd and the consequences dangerous,” said Qin, in Shanghai. Notably, China claims Taiwan as its territory and vowed to bring the island under its control someday by force if necessary.

China's Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong has requested solemn representations with the ambassador of South Korea after the country's president made "erroneous" remarks about Taiwan, stated the Chinese foreign ministry on Sunday.

While speaking exclusively with Reuters, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said that there has been an increase in tensions around Taiwan after forced attempts were made to change the status quo. The president added that he opposes such a change.

"The Taiwan issue is not simply an issue between China and Taiwan but, like the issue of North Korea, it is a global issue," said Yoon.

Sun called the remarks made by Yoon as "totally unacceptable", as per the statement released by the Chinese foreign ministry.

"The South Korean leader made no mention of the One China principle, but equated the Taiwan issue with the Korean Peninsula issue," said Sun.

China claims Taiwan, which is democratically ruled, as belonging to its own territory. The claims made by China are strongly rejected by Taipei.

The Chinese government demands that the nation, with which it shares ties, must recognise Taiwan as Chinese territory.

The complaint was made by Sun after last week the Chinese foreign ministry stated that all the issues related to Taiwan must be handled “prudently” by South Korea.

Retorting to the statement, South Korea summoned China's ambassador to protest against the remarks made by Beijing.

The US Navy on Monday called the sailing of the warship USS Milius through the Taiwan Strait before a "routine" transit. It comes just a few days after China ended its latest war games around the island.&nbsp;

Amid China's continued military aggression in the South China Sea, several Western navies conduct "freedom of navigation operations" regularly. The main aim of these drills is to assert the international status of regional waterways such as the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.&nbsp;

The US Navy said in a statement that the USS Milius guided-missile destroyer "conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit April 16 (local time) through waters where high-seas freedoms of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law".&nbsp;

"The ship transited through a corridor in the Strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal State," it added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, China says it has tracked the vessel. Colonel Shi Yi, who is a Chinese military spokesman, said that the troops in the area "remain on a high level of alert at all times and will resolutely defend national sovereignty and security as well as regional peace and stability".&nbsp;

On the other hand, Taiwan's defence ministry said on Monday that during the vessel's transit, its military had "closely monitored the dynamics in our surrounding sea and airspace, and the situation was normal."&nbsp;

Beijing claims Taiwan as its own territory since the Chinese civil war of the 1940s and also says that the island nation will defy the one-nation policy by pushing for formal independence. Beijing even claimed that, in case needed, it will use force to unite the two territories.&nbsp;

Baerbock, meanwhile, did not deviate from the normal and stated that any escalation in the region would not be an ideal situation.&nbsp;

"A military escalation in the Taiwan Strait, through which 50 per cent&nbsp;of world trade goes every day, would be a horror scenario for the entire world," said Baerbock.&nbsp;

Later, Taiwan’s transport ministry claimed that China would confine the no-fly zone to a short period on Sunday after Taipei raised objections over its plans.

Originally, it was claimed that China will be declaring the no-fly zone from April 16 to 18.

On Monday, China announced the end of three-day military drills, which started as a retaliation to the meeting of Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in the United States.

On Wednesday, Tsai said that her official trip to the United States showed Taiwan's commitment to defend its democracy, as the country's military plans to begin its own drills.

Tsai said that it is important for democracies to remain united while faced with “continued authoritarian expansionism.”

“Through this trip we again sent a message to the international community that Taiwan is determined to safeguard freedom and democracy which won acknowledgement and support from our democratic partners,” she said while speaking to visiting Canadian lawmakers at her office in Taipei.

As per reports, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is still carrying out military activity around Taiwan even after it formally announced an end to the military drills which continued from Saturday to Monday.
