The People's Liberation Army's (PLA) Eastern Theatre Command announced on Saturday that "combat readiness patrols" will continue until April 10 in China, which claims Taiwan as its own and hasn't ruled out using force to further its objectives.

China’s anger at the visit largely stems from its claims that the democratically governed Taiwan is its territory and threatens&nbsp;to use force to bring the island under its control. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese government contests China’s claims.&nbsp;

In line with this, the Chinese army’s Eastern Theater Command said that the drills are a “serious warning to the Taiwan independence separatist forces and external forces’ collusion and provocation, and it is a necessary action to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said it was monitoring the drills and would respond appropriately to defend the island’s security and released a video message, emphasising they would monitor the situation without escalating tensions. The video shows Taiwan’s army, navy and air force conducting drills and monitoring China’s movements.&nbsp;

Taiwan’s president, who was in the midst of hosting a US lawmakers' delegation, led by Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said that the people of Taiwan love democracy and seek peace. She added that it would strengthen security cooperation with the US without directly mentioning the drills in her televised address.&nbsp;

Chinese citizens largely in favour of reunifying Taiwan with mainland

A report by Reuters after speaking to citizens in Beijing said that while people are largely in support of the military drills around Taiwan, some are also worried about how it will affect their business. “Military exercises are what we should do…let's take Taiwan with military force,” said Wang, 35, who only provided his last name.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, 39-year-old Zhou told the news agency, that she was a “bit worried” as her work involves international trade with the main markets being the United States and Canada and many others who work in similar fields are concerned about how escalating tensions would impact their jobs.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Chinese tourists on an island near Taiwan were largely unaware and least bothered by Beijing’s military drill launch in the strait beyond, reported the news agency AFP. The tourists at the time were present along the coast of Pingtan, a scenic isle that is the closest point on the mainland to Taiwan.&nbsp;

“I saw the news, but it’s not going to stop our plans for today,” a 30-year-old visitor named Wu told AFP. He added, “Relations with Taiwan aren't great at the moment, but they’re stable. We hope for peaceful reunification.”&nbsp;

Similarly, another man named Lin said that the drills were just “a few preventive measures being taken by the government,” and hoped that China and Taiwan would reunify someday.&nbsp;

Chen also expressed hope that China can reclaim Taiwan in a “peaceful” way.

There was no broader sense of alarm in Taiwan about the military drills as people have long been accustomed to Chinese threats, reported Reuters, citing a senior Taiwan official familiar with security planning in the region who spoke to the news agency on the condition of anonymity. The official said that the situation was “as expected” and manageable and the Taiwanese government has rehearsed various scenarios for its response.&nbsp;

This comes after the Taiwanese president met with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy during her visit in the US state of California this week. The meeting has since drawn condemnation from Beijing.&nbsp;

As per media reports, the sanctions announced by China’s Taiwan Affairs Office also prohibit investors and firms related to Hsiao from cooperating with mainland organisations and individuals.&nbsp;In response to the move, Hsiao took to Twitter and wrote, “Wow, the PRC just sanctioned me again, for the second time,” along with an image of the statement by the Chinese government.

Terry Gou, the founder of Taiwanese multinational electronics manufacturer Foxconn, is attempting to get a presidential nomination for Taiwan's main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT) for a second time. Gou made the announcement on Wednesday and targeted the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for its stance regarding China.&nbsp;

Speaking to reporters, Gou said the only way to avoid war with China was to get DPP out of the office and reduce Sino-US tensions.&nbsp;

"We must honestly tell young people that it is dangerous to vote for the DPP, which 'exalts Taiwan independence and hates and opposes China'," Gou said. "Peace is not taken for granted, and people need to make the correct choice."

Gou, however, may have a tough road ahead as Hou Yu-ih, mayor of New Taipei City is being considered the favourite to secure the nomination for the elections, slated to take place in January 2024.&nbsp;

"It seriously violates the One-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, and seriously undermines China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," she added.

China had earlier warned that the meeting between Tsai Ing-wen and McCarthy will "further damage" relations between Washington and Beijing.

The meeting to be held on Wednesday in California will "greatly hurt the national feelings of 1.4 billion Chinese people" and undermine "the political foundation of China-US relations," said a consulate spokesperson in a statement, adding that it would "further damage China-US relations."

"Speaker McCarthy is ignoring the broad support of the international community for the One-China principle, ignoring the lessons that should have been drawn from previous mistakes," said the consulate.

"There is no doubt that he will make the same mistake again, further damage China-US relations, but it will only strengthen the strong will and determination of the Chinese people" to achieve "reunification" with Taiwan, they added.

McCarthy, who is a Republican, had earlier confirmed that he will be holding talks with Tsai in California, defying China's warnings that he was "playing with fire”.

Tsai has planned to stop over in the US while returning from Central America, where she has met Guatemala's leaders and is travelling to Belize before meeting McCarthy.

McCarthy's office on Monday said that the "bipartisan" meeting will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, outside Los Angeles.

Speaking to reporters in Beijing, China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian said on March 29 that Tsai's transits to the US were not just for her waiting at the airport or hotel, but for her to meet American officials and lawmakers.&nbsp;

Last year in August, Beijing held multi-day military drills around Taiwan in reaction to the visit of then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

The US remains Taiwan's most important ally -- and its biggest arms supplier -- despite switching its diplomatic recognition to Beijing in 1979. Local media reported on Monday that around 20 American lawmakers planned to accompany speaker McCarthy to the meeting in California.

Meanwhile, Taiwanese President Tsai met with members of Belize's House of Representatives and Prime Minister John Briceno in Belmopan. US House Speaker McCarthy to host Taiwanese president on Wednesday in California

Nine Chinese aircraft crossed median line of the Taiwan Strait to carry out combat readiness patrols, said Taiwan defence ministry. The Chinese moves have come just days after Beijing threatened retaliation if Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen meets Kevin McCarthy, Speaker of US House of Representatives.

Taiwan a democratically ruled island nation is viewed by China as its own territory. China has not ruled out use of force to retake Taiwan.

Tsai arrived in the United States on Wednesday, stopping on her way to Central America.

She is expected to meet McCarthy in Los Angeles on her way back to Taipei in April, and China on Wednesday threatened unspecified retaliation if that meeting were to go ahead.

Taiwan's defence ministry said that Chinese aircraft crossed at points in south, centre and north of the Taiwan Strait's median line. The median line is an unofficial buffer between China and Taiwan.

Taiwan's armed forces responded using its own aircraft and ships to monitor the situation using the principle of "not escalating conflicts or causing disputes", the ministry said.

"The communist military's deployment of forces deliberately created tension in the Taiwan Strait, not only undermining peace and stability, but also has a negative impact on regional security and economic development," it said in a statement.

China sends planes across Taiwan Straits median line

Taiwan's Defence Ministry has stated that ten Chinese planes breached the median line of the Taiwan Strait, normally an unofficial barrier between the two sides. The Ministry claimed that nine Chinese fighter jets and one military drone crossed the median line.
