Taiwan’s Former President Ma Ying-jeou will visit China later this month, said his office on Sunday (March 19). The move will mark the first time that a former or current Taiwanese leader has visited since the defeated Republic of China government fled to the island in 1949. Notably, the Republic of China remains Taiwan’s official name.&nbsp;

The visit, which will take place between March 27 and April 7, also comes amid a rise in tensions between Beijing and Taipei. Ma who is also a senior member of Kuomintang (KMT) the opposition party in Taiwan has traditionally favoured China but has vehemently denied being ‘pro-Beijing’.&nbsp;

Notably, Ma also held a landmark meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Singapore in late 2015 shortly before incumbent Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen was elected. This also comes amid KMT seemingly increasing its engagement with China since both Beijing and Taipei have eased Covid-related restrictions.&nbsp;

Last month, the deputy chairman of the opposition party, Andrew Hsia visited Beijing and met senior Communist Party leader Wang Huning. The visit garnered significant criticism from Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which accused KMT of being too close to Beijing and wanting to sell out Taiwan.&nbsp;

During his visit, Ma will visit five cities Nanjing, Wuhan, Changsha, Chongqing and Shanghai, said his office, as per Reuters. The former Taiwanese president will also reportedly meet students and visit sites connected to World War II, the second Sino-Japanese War, and the 1911 revolution which overthrew the last Chinese emperor and led to the beginning of the Republic of China, said Ma’s office.&nbsp;

However, it is not clear if the former Taiwanese president will meet any Chinese officials or leaders including Xi. KMT has previously argued that it is important to keep open communication with China given the current tensions.&nbsp;

Beijing has declined to hold talks with Tsai accusing her of being a “separatist”. Tsai who was first elected president of Taiwan in 2016 has previously said that only Taiwan’s people can decide their future and rejected China’s claim on Taipei.&nbsp;

This comes as Beijing continues to maintain its military and political pressure for democratically-elected Taiwan to accept Chinese sovereignty and reiterated calls for reunification with the self-governing island.

Liu added that it was "absolutely untrue" that no efforts were made after receiving the news of Honduras' intentions to shift relations to China, adding that Taiwan would "absolutely not engage" in money competition with Beijing, the news agency Reuters reported.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, Honduran President Xiomara Castro said that she asked her foreign minister to open official relations with China. If Honduras ended relations with Taiwan, the island would be left with only 13 diplomatic allies.

On Wednesday, Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina said the decision to switch relations with China was partly because Tegucigalpa was "up to its neck" in financial challenges and debt - including $600 million it owes Taiwan, Reuters reported.&nbsp;

Reina said his government asked Taiwan to double its annual aid to $100 million but never got an answer. However, Taipei denied this and said that comments from the Honduran foreign minister did not reflect the facts of their communications.

Apart from Taiwan, the United States has also warned Honduras about seeking official relations with China. On Wednesday, a US State Department spokesperson said, "The Honduran Government should be aware that the PRC (People's Republic of China) makes many promises that are unfulfilled. We will continue to monitor next steps closely."

A top Taiwanese official said that some intelligence has been shared with McCarthy's team over China's possible threats. “We shared some intelligence about what the Chinese Communist party is recently up to and the kinds of threats they pose," FT reported quoting the Taiwanese official.&nbsp;

The official said that Beijing was “not in a good situation right now" and added that Chinese President Xi Jinping and his close circle have more decisions to make up their sleeves.&nbsp;

"We should promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and advance the process of China's peaceful reunification," the premier said.&nbsp;

The country will also&nbsp;increase military spending by more than seven per cent this year, it was announced at the meet. While China's military budget currently stands at&nbsp;around $225 billion, experts believe it is actually a lot higher than what it reports.

According to the Pentagon, the US State Department approved the potential sale which includes 200 anti-aircraft Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and 100 AGM-88B HARM missiles that can take out land-based radar stations. "The proposed sale will contribute to the recipient's capability to provide for the defence of its airspace, regional security, and interoperability with the United States," the Pentagon said in a statement. Taiwan's defence ministry, meanwhile, said the missiles would "effectively defend the airspace to deal with threats and provocations from the Communist military" and would bolster defence stockpiles, the news agency Reuters reported. The ministry added that American defence companies Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Technologies are the principal contractors. These companies have been sanctioned by China for selling weapons to Taiwan. This major military boost to Taiwan comes as it reported on Thursday a second-day large-scale Chinese air force incursions into its air defence identification zone. The defence ministry said that during the last 24 hours, it spotted 21 aircraft. Beijing opposes the arms sales The Chinese foreign ministry said on Thursday that it firmly opposed the new US arms sale package for Taiwan and that Washington should stop sales to, and military contact with, Taipei. "China urges the US side to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiqués, stop arms sales to Taiwan and stop US-Taiwan military ties, and stop creating factors of tension in the Taiwan Strait," foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said. "China will continue to take resolute and strong measures to firmly defend its sovereignty and security interests," she added. The foreign ministry spokesperson also emphasised that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China's territory. "The root cause of the tension in the Taiwan Strait is the DPP authorities' pursuit of Taiwan independence and secession, as well as some countries' attempts to use Taiwan to control China," she said. The officials from four countries, Taiwan, the US, Japan and South Korea took part in the conversation which was centred around maintaining the resilience of the semiconductor supply chain. However, the ministry did not mention which officials were a part of the meeting.&nbsp;

The virtual meeting of senior officials from the “US-East Asia Semiconductor Supply Chain Resilience Working Group”, or “Fab 4” took place on February 16 after months of coordination, reported Reuters. The “Fab” in the name refers to a shorthand of an industry term for the fabrication plants where chips are made and used for virtually everything from fridges to fighter jets.

The countries members of this group in the Indo-Pacific region are home to some of the world’s largest contract chip makers, including&nbsp;Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd, South Korean memory chip giants Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, and SK Hynix, with Japan being the supplier of materials and equipment required to make the semiconductors.

The first meeting of the group was held in September last year after a two-year&nbsp;global chip crunch which had&nbsp;prompted car manufacturers to halt production and exposed the larger supply chain issues.&nbsp;

In a statement, the Taiwanese foreign ministry said, “The focus of the discussions of the participating quartet at the meeting was mainly on how to maintain the resilience of the semiconductor supply chain and explore the possible future cooperation directions of all parties.”&nbsp;

It added, “As an important member of the Indo-Pacific region, our country also plays a key role in the global semiconductor industry, and has deep economic and trade relations with countries in the region.” This comes as the four countries have moved to boost cooperation and collaboration after growing threats from China.&nbsp;

As per the report, a joint combined arms battalion of at least 500 soldiers will travel to the US in the second half of the year. The battalion would consist of mainly the army’s 333rd Mechanised Infantry Brigade and 542nd Armour Brigade, the report added.&nbsp;

“This marks the first time troops at battalion level, typically consisting of around 500 soldiers, will travel to the US for training – rather than platoon (25-60 troops) or company (80-150) level as in the past,” the report said.

The training program between the two nations will reportedly be expanded in the coming months. The latest plans of sending hundreds of Taiwanese troops to US for training is deemed to counter China’s growing military power in the region.&nbsp;

“The National Defence Authorisation Act for Fiscal Year 2018 specifically encourages exchanges of defence officials and military officers for the purposes of training and coordination, in addition to exchanges of senior military leaders.”

The sources added that this is not something new as Taiwan had sent military personnel to the US for training earlier as well, or the other way around. However, it was done in a hush-hush manner, they revealed.&nbsp;

Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang on Tuesday urged the international community not to draw parallels between Ukraine and Taiwan, a self-ruled nation which Beijing claims as its own.

He said that China was deeply concerned over the situation unfolding in Ukraine, and brushed aside speculations that were highlighted frequently that Beijing was closely watching Kyiv in a bid to carry out a similar invasion against Taiwan.

“It has been almost a year since the full escalation of the Ukraine crisis. The international community is watching the developments closely. China is deeply worried about the escalation of the conflict and a possible spiral out of control,” Qin said during the unveiling of President Xi Jinping’s new “Global Security Initiative” (GSI).

“In the meantime, we urge certain countries to immediately stop fuelling the fire, stop shifting blame to China, and stop touting ‘Ukraine today, Taiwan tomorrow’,” Qin said, according to an official readout of his speech released by the Chinese foreign ministry.

In his remarks, Qin attempted to portray China as a neutral and responsible world power, working for peace amid global turmoil.

“Since the outbreak of the (Ukraine) crisis, China has taken an objective and impartial stance based on the merits of the issue,” Qin said.

He retreated Beijing’s push for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries saying that the legitimate security concerns of all countries must be taken seriously.

“China - which has provided strong political backing to Russia on Ukraine and has never described Moscow’s action as an invasion,” Qin said, adding that it will continue to promote peace talks, contribute its ideas for a political settlement of the crisis, and join the international community to promote dialogue and consultation, address the concerns of all parties and seek common security.

Chinese delegation visits Taiwan to attend lantern festival

A group of six Chinese officials arrived in Taiwan, on Saturday (February 18) for the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic three years ago at the invitation of Taipei’s city government for a cultural festival. However, at least a dozen pro-Independence supporters raised slogans outside the airport in protest of their arrival while a small group of pro-China supporters shouted in their welcome, reported Reuters. This comes amid soaring military tensions between Beijing and Taipei and China’s increasing claim over Taiwan which sees itself as distinct from the Chinese mainland with its own constitution and democratically elected leaders.&nbsp;

The delegation from Beijing was led by the deputy head of the Shanghai office of China's Taiwan Affairs Office, Li&nbsp;Xiaodong who arrived at Taipei’s Songshan airport and was immediately ushered into a van along with heavy security and driven away. Meanwhile, pro-independence protesters were reportedly heard shouting “Taiwan and China, separate countries” and “Chinese people, get out”.&nbsp;

Notably, Chinese officials were invited to Taipei&nbsp;to attend the Lantern Festival&nbsp;by the city's&nbsp;Mayor Chiang Wan-an, who is from the main opposition party, the Kuomintang. The party is said to have traditionally supported close relations with China. Ahead of the three-day visit by the Chinese officials, Chiang told reporters they “very much welcomed” the delegation.&nbsp;

He added that the arrangements for the Chinese officials will be “low-key, simple, and secure” as set out by Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council. In the past couple of months, China has continued to carry out military activities near Taiwan while also refusing to speak to the Tawainese government led by President Tsai Ing-wen who took office in 2016 as they believe it to be&nbsp;a separatist. Beijing has recently also ramped up pressure on Taiwan under President Xi Jinping, who has said “reunification” with Taiwan is essential and must not be passed on to future generations.&nbsp;
