The parents in Taiwan filed complaints against a private preschool named New Taipei Kid Castle in May after accusing the staff of feeding their children “unknown drugs”. It was later found that the children had been given medicines containing drugs which are said to be highly addictive sedatives, some of which have been phased out of certain countries.

<h2>Parents’ accusations against teachers</h2>

Earlier this year, parents said they noticed what appeared to be withdrawal symptoms in their children over the long Lunar New Year holiday back in February, Mike, the&nbsp;father of a five-year-old child, told BBC Chinese.&nbsp;

“Some parents found their children, over the vacation, had become irritable, restless and screamed when sleeping, and even cried out with leg cramps,” said Mike, adding that after speaking to their children they found that the staff had been giving them an “unknown potion”.

A similar case emerged across the island in the city of Kaohsiung, reported BBC, where the local health department found four doctors guilty of improper use of one of the drugs, phenobarbital, on about 20 children.&nbsp;

The doctors’ practices have since been suspended and were also fined 1.4 million Taiwanese dollars ($ 46,121). As per local media reports, the cough medicines in question were barbiturates which is a class of drugs which includes phenobarbital and have been phased out in most countries.&nbsp;

Additionally, drugs containing phenobarbital are used during treatment for epilepsy and or used as surgical anaesthesia. Meanwhile, benzodiazepines commonly known as “benzos”, are a class of depressant drugs most commonly used to treat severe anxiety and insomnia.

<h2>The ongoing investigation</h2>

Based on the complaints filed by parents in April and May, the police launched an investigation. However, officials said it is not clear why the children were given these addictive syrups.

Meanwhile, hundreds of parents also took to the streets on Sunday in New Taipei City and demanded greater transparency from the ongoing police investigation of the case. So far, the principal of the school and five teachers have been arrested and questioned by the police amid the ongoing criminal investigation. &nbsp;

The kindergarten at the centre of this scandal has since been closed. The Kid Castle Educational Institute was ordered to shut down last week and its directors have been fined 150,000 Taiwanese dollars ($$4,872).&nbsp;

<h2>New Taipei City government under fire</h2>

The New Taipei City’s government came under fire last week after the parents accused the teachers of shifting the blame after one of them confessed and said that the students were given cough medicine, as per local media reports.&nbsp;

However, the teacher said it was with the parents’ consent which has since sparked an uproar. Parents told the local media that while they did receive a list of medication, they never thought it contained barbiturates.&nbsp;

“When kids catch colds, the cough medicine prescribed by the doctor will not contain barbiturates. It is completely different from cough medicine,” said one parent, as quoted by the Taiwan News.&nbsp;

This has since prompted New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih to issue an apology for his handling of the case and spoke about how teachers with ulterior motives had done “heartbreaking things” to the children, as per local media reports.&nbsp;

Amid public criticism, two major preschool unions in the city have urged their members to stop administering medicines to students and asked parents to keep their children at home if they are ill for recovery.&nbsp;

As per local media reports, preschool staff and teachers have allegedly been bullied across Taiwan since the scandal. Meanwhile, Taipei City Hospital has offered free blood tests for preschool children to check for traces of sedatives.&nbsp;

Teachers in Taiwan accused of ‘drugging’ kindergarten children, parents alarmed

A Scoot aeroplane, that departed from South Korea for Singapore, was found to have a missing nose wheel upon its arrival in Taipei on Monday morning during a scheduled stop.

According to a statement released by the airlines, flight TR897, which connects Seoul, Taipei and Singapore, detected a technical fault upon landing at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

“The flight which was originally scheduled to depart from Taipei to Singapore at 1.30 am was subsequently cancelled,” it added.

As per Focus Taiwan reports, the flight had more than 300 passengers on board.&nbsp;

According to Taiwanese media outlets, the left nose wheel toppled at the time the plane was landing at 12:06 am after sensors detected abnormal tyre pressure before the aeroplane's descent.

“When the plane landed, the left tyre and metal rim on the nose gear were shorn off, leaving only the right nose tyre to keep the plane upright and moving,” reported Taiwan News.

As per the aviation safety portal SKYbrary, a nose wheel assists a plane in directional control during take-off and landing, and “allows the aircraft to manoeuvre whilst on the ground”.

<h2>Incident to be investigated, says&nbsp;Taiwan's transport minister</h2>

Taiwan's transport and communications minister Wang Kwo-tsai said that the incident will be probed by its Civil Aeronautics Administration and relevant authorities, as per CNA reports.

“Hotel accommodation and flight refunds have been arranged for our passengers where applicable. Scoot will provide assistance to customers with connecting flights from Singapore,” CNA quoted Scoot as saying.

The airline further said that it had arranged a recovery flight TR897D for the remaining passengers from Taipei to Singapore on Monday at 8:45 pm.&nbsp;

The recovery flight landed in Singapore at 1:35 am on Tuesday, as per Changi Airport's website.

"Scoot sincerely apologises for the disruption and inconvenience caused. The safety of our customers and crew is our top priority, and we will continue to provide assistance to affected customers where necessary," CNA quoted Scoot as saying.

“Beijing’s ‘one country, two systems’ formula has no market in Taiwan and Taiwanese people believe this is just a trick by the mainland to destroy the Republic of China government,” stated Yang, using Taiwan’s official name. 
 
“Taiwan has stated its position clearly that the Republic of China is an independent sovereign state. If Beijing really wants to negotiate, then it has to make clear its stance about the Republic of China, or there isn’t really any room for negotiations,” he added. 
 
Taiwan is considered by China as a breakaway province which will be eventually united with the mainland, if necessary by force. The government has emphasised that they aim at peaceful reunification under its “one China” principle, according to which Taiwan and the mainland are one country.

“If it is Beijing’s position that the civil war has not ended, then it will need a three-step solution (for reunification) and the first one would be a peace agreement to end cross-strait hostility,” said Chang. “This will help pave the way for reunification talks, and only the final step is to discuss what political system Taiwan may adopt,” he added.

Miller also said that the US official “raised a number of issues of concern,” and “opportunities to explore cooperation on shared transnational issues with the (People’s Republic of China) PRC where our interests align”. Blinken and Qin did not address the press on the first day after the US official's arrival as they&nbsp;shook hands at the state guesthouse before their respective flags. According to the Chinese state-run broadcaster CCTV, Qin told Blinken that relations between Washington and Beijing “are at the lowest point since the establishment of diplomatic relations” over four decades ago.&nbsp;

“The Taiwan issue is the core of China’s core interests, the most important issue in China-US relations and the most prominent risk,” Qin told Washington’s top diplomat, as per the Chinese state media. &nbsp;

The US secretary of state is also scheduled for an extended discussion&nbsp;and additional talks with Qin, as well as China’s top diplomat Wang Yi, on Monday. However, it is not certain that Blinken&nbsp;will&nbsp;meet&nbsp;with the Chinese president.&nbsp;

Currently on a two-day trip to China, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was received by top diplomat Wang Yi on Monday who said Washington’s “erroneous perception” of China was the reason for the deteriorating ties between the two nations. Urging the US to 'reflect deeply', Wang added&nbsp;Taiwan remained a sovereign part of China and that no compromise was possible on the issue.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"It is necessary to make a choice between dialogue and confrontation, cooperation or conflict,"&nbsp;Wang told Blinken, according to&nbsp;Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.&nbsp;

“With an attitude of being responsible to the people, history and the world, we must reverse the downward spiral of Sino-US relations, push for a return to a healthy and stable track and work together to find a correct way for China and the United States to get along in the new era,” he added.&nbsp;

Wang, whose position within the Communist party ranks above that of a foreign minister, held a three-hour-long meeting with Blinken, according to the State Department.&nbsp;

The Chinese leader urged the US to not assume that China was seeking dominance. He added that&nbsp;Washington should not “misjudge” Beijing based on&nbsp;trajectories of traditional Western powers.

“This is key as to whether the US policy towards China can truly return to objectivity and rationality."

<h2>The outpouring of sexual harassment cases</h2>

Over the past two weeks, more than 90 people have come forward, accusing individuals across the island nation.&nbsp;

Initially, the allegations focused on politics and the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), leading to the resignation of several senior officials.&nbsp;

However, now the accusations have spread throughout Taiwanese society, targeting doctors, professors, sporting umpires, and YouTubers.

<h2>Better late than never!</h2>

As per a BBC report, the MeToo moment is long overdue for many women across Taiwanese society, which is otherwise commended globally for its progressive politics and commitment to gender equality.&nbsp;

President Tsai Ing-wen, the country's first female leader, has apologised and pledged to implement reforms.&nbsp;

According to social commentator Dr Liu Wen, the magnitude of these revelations and the exposure of underlying issues across various industries is unprecedented.

"Previously we had single cases around sexual harassment, but never in such magnitude."

"It's the first time a lot of the underlying issues in different industries are being revealed all at the same time," added Wen.

<h2>'Wave Makers' makes waves</h2>

The screen inspiration behind this important local moment as mentioned is a Netflix show called Wave Makers. The show about Taiwanese political staffers working on an election debuted on Netflix in late April.

A scene from the show has been credited as the clarion call for the MeToo moment now sweeping Taiwan.

In it, a young female aide finds herself alone with her mentor — a party spokeswoman and the show's main character.&nbsp;

On-screen, she is seen debating whether to confide in her senior the harassment she had endured from a male colleague "knowing that a public report would harm the party's standing and likely her own career", writes the BBC.

However, she finally decides to tell her and her confession is met with an offer of help.

"Let's not just let this go, ok," says the woman's senior, brushing away her staffer's concerns.&nbsp;

"We can't let things go this easily. Otherwise, we'll wither away and die."

Echoing the now iconic dialogue, on May 31, an ex-DPP staffer wrote an essay on Facebook.

"Let's not just let this go," wrote Chen Chiemn-jou. She went on to describe her experience of being sexually harassed at a work event. She alleges that when she had reported the harassment earlier, a female supervisor in charge of the party's women's affairs - had asked her "Why didn't you say anything?", before advising her to bury the claim.

<h2>Taiwan's #MeToo movement</h2>

Chen's post electrified Taiwan. The post which has been shared thousands of times, as per BBC, appears to have motivated others in politics and beyond to report their experiences of harassment and how authorities responded.

Another ex-DPP female staffer later alleged her male supervisor had verbally abused her and stymied her complaint about another male colleague's harassment.

Several senior DPP officials, including Hsu Chia-tien, the supervisor in Chen's case, who was suspended by the party, and Yen Chih-fa, an adviser to the president who has denied accusations of sexual harassment by a campaigner have resigned.

In addition to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party in Taiwan has also faced allegations of sexual harassment.&nbsp;

A journalist accused KMT lawmaker Fu Kun-chi of forcibly kissing her at a press event in 2014, which Fu has denied.&nbsp;

Another KMT councillor alleged harassment by a well-known media personality, who apologised for his behaviour, citing being drunk and having no recollection of the events.

More than 90 cases of sexual harassment and assault have been documented in an online database.&nbsp;

Among the high-profile men accused are Tiananmen protest leader Wang Dan, who has denied sexual assault allegations from two younger men, and exiled poet Bei Ling, who has been accused by a writer of the Wave Makers show of sexual assault, which he denies.&nbsp;

Polish diplomat Bartosz Ryś is another high-profile name. He has been accused of sexual assault by a Taiwanese think tank researcher, but prosecutors investigated the incident and decided not to charge him. Ryś has denied the allegations.

While this moment signifies a reckoning and an opportunity to address gender and sexual abuse in Taiwan, survivors find themselves thrust into a traumatic public conversation.&nbsp;Many remain sceptical of lasting change.

The MeToo movement in Taiwan has emerged at a significant time in the country's political landscape as it prepares for a presidential election next January.&nbsp;

The TV show's screenwriters, who sparked the initial wave of allegations, expressed their surprise at the public response. Talking to BBC, they explained that "through idealised depictions of addressing workplace harassment in drama, people can find a shared language to express their expectations of how such issues should be handled."

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang has told US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that America should “show respect” and stop meddling in China’s internal affairs with respect to the Taiwan issue.

In a phone call on Wednesday morning, the Chinese minister asked the US to meet China halfway, and effectively manage differences, promote communication and cooperation.

Qin reiterated Beijing’s firm stance on core concerns like Taiwan and said that China has always viewed and handled the relationship with mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The minister further said that since the beginning of this year, China-US relations have faced new difficulties and challenges and added “It’s clear who is responsible."

Blinken also "made clear that the US would continue to use diplomatic engagements to raise areas of concern as well as areas of potential cooperation".&nbsp;

<h2>Thaw in ties</h2>

Wednesday’s engagement comes on the backdrop of Blinken’s expected visit to China for talks this Sunday. However, no official confirmation has been given so far.

The talks seek to bring a thaw in the tense Sino-US relations, which have seen turbulent days due to the spy balloon incident in February.

Blinken was expected to travel to Beijing at that time, which would have been the first by a US secretary of state in five years, but he cancelled his trip following the suspected Chinese spy balloon incident that flew over the United States.

The two sides had hoped to improve bilateral relations during a Bali summit between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden in November.

Last month, a closed-door meeting took place between Biden’s national security advisor Jake Sullivan and top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi in Vienna.

Others rappelled down from a flying helicopter. The simulation ended with a dramatic scene in which some officers hung in the air as they were sent back to the helicopter.

Taiwan and China split in 1949 following a civil war that ended with the ruling Communist Party in control of the mainland.

The island has never been part of the People's Republic of China, but Beijing says it must unite with the mainland.

Beijing also has intensified its battle to win away Taiwan's diplomatic allies since independence-leaning Tsai took office in 2016.&nbsp;

In March, Honduras established formal relations with China, becoming the latest in a string of countries to break diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
