<p>In a statement, the Taiwanese defence ministry said the Chinese People’s Liberation Army sent 37 aircraft and seven navy vessels around Taiwan between Friday 6:00 am and Saturday 6:00 am (local time), reported the Associated Press. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Taiwanese officials, among the warplanes were J-10 and J-16 fighters and H-6 bombers. Out of nearly 40 warplanes, 22 crossed the midline of the Taiwan Strait – an unofficial boundary between the island and the mainland – or entered the island’s defence identification zone near its southern part, said the Taiwanese defence ministry.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>China’s growing threat</strong></h2>

<p>China’s move to send ships and warplanes around the democratically governed Taiwan comes ahead of the latter’s annual Han Kuang exercise next week which is said to be aimed at defending itself against a possible invasion. It also comes days after Taiwan’s recently concluded Wan’an exercises which aim to prepare the island’s civilians for natural disasters and practice evacuations in case of an air raid.</p>

<p>China has repeatedly claimed Taiwan as its own territory while the island’s government strongly disputes Beijing’s sovereignty claims, saying that only their 23 million people can decide their future. Recently, China has also ramped up military activities near the island and expressed displeasure at political activities in Taiwan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the drills, the Chinese military posted a simulation video showing how it could launch a full-scale attack against the self-governed island if war ever broke out. The video showed what appeared to be trajectory missiles landing on Taiwan and its surrounding waters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, it also mapped out how the Chinese forces, including military aircraft and navy vessels, could launch a coordinated attack.</p>

<p>It shows astonished divers encircling the impressive shiny silver fish off the coast of Ruifang in Taipei County.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At one point, one of the divers even extended their hand to touch this extraordinary creature.</p>

<p>According to the divers, the fish measured approximately 6.5 feet in length, which, although sizable, pales in comparison to their maximum recorded size of 36 feet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Guinness Book of World Records recognises the oarfish as the longest bony fish currently known to exist.</p>

<p>However, the divers believed that the fish's presence was not a good sign for its well-being.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Diving instructor Wang Cheng-Ru told Jam Press publication: "It must have been dying, so it swam into shallower waters."</p>

<p>Taiwan announced its plans to construct a new generation of biosafety research and development facilities for bolstering its defence against biological warfare as pressure ramps up on the self-ruled island by the People’s Liberation Army.<br />

“The (planned construction) is in response to the rise of highly contagious pathogens in recent years,” stated Taiwan’s defence ministry on Monday it was reported by a local news outlet that Taiwan was asked by the United States to develop weaponised biological agents. The report was refuted by Taipei.</p>

<p>The ministry stated that in enhancing to increasing the ability of Taiwan to detect counter-weaponised biological agents, the facilities which have been planned and will be built by the ministry’s Medical Affairs Bureau, will also strengthen the ability of the island to prevent a pandemic.<br />

Taiwan has been facing constant threats from Beijing which considers the island as part of its territory and has vowed to take it back under its control – by force if required. Many countries, including the United States, have not yet recognised Taiwan as an independent state, however, they oppose any unilateral change being brought by force in the cross-strait status quo.</p>

<h2><strong>Cross-strait tensions escalate</strong></h2>

<p>Since August, cross-strait tensions have escalated as military activities around Taiwan were intensified by the PLA, which included sending warplanes over the median line almost every day.<br />

Speaking about the biosafety lab, bureau spokesman Yang Chung-chi said, “In dealing with nuclear and biological warfare, the military emphasises defence and protection. The purpose of building a P4 lab by the National Defence Medical Centre is primarily for detection of the pathogens of diseases and pandemics in order to find countermeasures.”<br />
<br />
Yang stated that the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction has been signed by Taiwan, which places a ban on the production, acquisition, development and retention of biological and toxin weapons.</p>

<p>The centre will offer visa services, document authentication, and emergency assistance, and will cater to business- people, tourists, and Taiwanese nationals in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman.</p>

<p>The existing Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in Delhi, which has been operating as the de facto embassy of Taiwan in India, was established in 1995.</p>

<p>In 2012, a TECC centre, de facto Taiwanese consulate, was established in the southern Indian city of Chennai. Notably, nearly 60 per cent of Taiwanese businesses investing in and opening factories in India have chosen to establish their operations in southern India.</p>

<p>Leading Taiwan presidential candidate William Lai wrote in the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday that he could keep the peace with China if elected, reiterating his willingness for talks without preconditions and a pledge to boost defences.</p>

<p>Lai, Taiwan's vice president and the candidate from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has consistently led the majority of opinion polls ahead of the January election. President Tsai Ing-wen cannot run again after two terms in office.</p>

<p>In a commentary piece, Lai said that despite the military and economic challenges from China, including Beijing's almost daily aerial incursions near the island, his top priorities remained pragmatism and consistency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I will support the cross-strait status quo - which is in the best interests of both the Republic of China, as Taiwan is formally known, and the international community. I will never rule out the possibility of dialogue without preconditions, based on the principles of reciprocity and dignity," he added.</p>

<p>Last week, the Pentagon announced that the State Department had approved two separate arms deals, valued at up to $440 million, for Taiwan.</p>

<p>Taipei had requested to purchase&nbsp;30mm ammunition, including high-explosive incendiary-tracer rounds, multi-purpose rounds and training rounds, for an estimated cost of $332.2 million, according to the White House. After the approval, Pentagon's Defence Security&nbsp;Cooperation Agency notified Congress of both of the possible sales.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Taiwan's defence ministry released a statement thereafter saying the sales will boost the nation's defence against&nbsp;China's "expanding threats of military and grey zone tactics", which it said has posed "severe threats" to Taiwan.</p>

Reuters reported that artillery trainees fired Stinger missiles and operated Avenger air defence missile systems at a coastal drill zone in Pingtung county.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Monday, army Humvees in Pingtung fired off US-made TOW anti-tank missiles to destroy static targets near the shoreline.</p>

<p>Pingtung looks out onto the Taiwan Strait, South China Sea, Pacific Ocean and Bashi Channel which separates Taiwan from the Philippines, making it a highly strategic location to keep watch on China's military activity.&nbsp;</p>

US military officer, Army General Mark Milley said Xi has not made up his mind on whether to order a military unification programme by 2027 or not.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to an audience at the National Press Club in Washington, General Milley said Xi had been challenging his military to develop the capability to undertake the unification process when the time comes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"He [Xi] has stated publicly that he has challenged the People’s Liberation Army to develop the military capability to unify Taiwan with China by 2027. So he didn’t say, ‘I’ve decided to attack and invade’," Milley explained.</p>

<p>Milley noted Xi didn't outrightly say he was going to invade Taiwan, albeit, he insinuated by giving his military a timeframe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“He said, you generals, you develop the capability to do that; we’ll make the decision later. There’s a very subtle distinction there,” he added.</p>

<h2><strong>US military should accelerate modernisation&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Milley called upon the US military to accelerate military modernisation to retain superiority and deter Beijing from invading Taiwan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“You want to make sure that every single day President Xi wakes up and says today’s not that day, and that decision never comes,” Milley said.</p>

<p>“The faster we move [on military modernisation], the faster we can retain military superiority, then I believe … we are more likely than not to deter war...and if war does happen, we will prevail.”</p>

<p>The statement by the Pentagon officials comes a few days after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's meeting with Xi wherein the former said Washington did not support Taiwan's independence bid.&nbsp;</p>

Beijing remains undecided on Taiwan's unification: Top Pentagon official

<p>The Japanese defence ministry&nbsp;late Friday said it had spotted two Russian Navy ships in waters near Taiwan and its Okinawa islands in the last four days. The announcement comes days after Taiwan also reported spotting two Russian warships off its eastern coast.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Japanese military said it had spotted two Steregushchy-class frigates, 70 km southwest of the country's Yonaguni island in Okinawa prefecture near Taiwan, on Tuesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The warships sailed back and forth in the waters between the island and Taiwan and were last spotted on Friday between&nbsp;Miyako and Okinawa islands. The military said it had dispatched two vessels to monitor the Russian ships for their activity.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Japan raises 'concerns'</strong></h2>

<p>The Japanese government has raised concerns over the repeated Russian military activity near its territory, including joint drills with China. Tokyo said such exercises posed "serious concern" for Japan's national security.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Such repeated joint flights by the strategic bombers of the two countries in the vicinity of our country signify the expansion of activities in the vicinity of our country, and are clearly intended to act arbitrarily against our country," Matsuno, the government's top spokesperson, said.&nbsp;</p>
