With a screenplay that gets the viewers engaged right from the first frame to the catchy background score and credible performances, there really isn't a single dull moment in 'Looop Lapeta'. It isn't easy to make a remake of a hit that has been loved and revered the world over but Bhatia and his team of writers manage to step up, create very interesting subplots with characters that can have their own separate stories to make the film thoroughly enjoyable.&nbsp; 
 
There are two dimwitted brothers Gappu-Appu (Raghav Raj Kakker and Manik Papneja) who plan to rob&nbsp;their father's jewellery store- a place that Satya too plans to steal from. The confusion that ensues &nbsp;(not once but three times over) while the store is robbed, is one of the most well written and enacted portions of the film. There is also a Taxi driver, who crosses paths with Savi and who is heartbroken about his girlfriend getting married to someone else. Also adding more fun to the plot is a cop- who on his way to buy the fresh catch from the fish market, spots Savi running, gets suspicious and starts chasing her. Not just the lead pair, but Bhatia ensures all the characters have an intrinsic part to play in the loop and are so well fleshed out that you want to know more about them.&nbsp;

The performances are great. Taapsee Pannu, who has over a period of time proved that she alone can take a film forward, delivers a credible performance as Savi, an angsty former athlete who has several personal issues that need to be addressed. She may be running ( a lot) against time to save her boyfriend but the film beautifully uses the plot to make the character come to terms with her personal problems.&nbsp; 
 
Tahir Raj Bhasin, easily the man of the moment on OTT space, is refreshing, goofy, charming - all wrapped into one. We all know slackers like Satya in real life and yet we all fall for their optimism and simplicity. Bhasin breathes in the right amount of charm into his character and its a delight to watch him on screen. He shares great onscreen chemistry with Pannu and the two support each other well throughout the film.&nbsp; 
 
Actors Raghav Raj Kakker and Manik Papneja are equally charming as Gappu and Appu. I would love to see the two getting a spin-off. They were so effective in their parts, drawing in the laughs. So did Shreya Dhanwanthary and Samir Kevin Roy as lovers Julia and Jacob.&nbsp;

If you have seen Siddharth Sengupta's 'Undekhi' for Applause Entertainment you know he is most comfortable in the world of ‘unorganized’ crime. Self-appointed ganglords and their thoroughly bratty children, powered by rudderless goons who think they can get away with murder, literally, make Sengupta’s blood boil.

There is an undercurrent of the simmering spleen in 'Yeh Kali Kali Aankhein'(named after a &nbsp;hit song from the Shah Rukh Khan starrer 'Baazigar' for no particular reason) &nbsp;a looming resentment against the things people with money and power can do to the powerless. This is a &nbsp;series about the abuse of power of wealth, about lawless gangsters forcing their will on the helpless: a &nbsp;favourite theme in our cinema for years.

But wait. There is a twist to the tale here. The bully patriarch, played with unerring pitch-perfection by Sourabh Shukla, has a &nbsp;lovely daughter and she is in love with the poor little pretty boy since school. Purva, played by the lovely Aanchal Singh, is no walkover. Nor is she the vampish Bindu of yore slithering and slobbering all over her object of desire. She is a &nbsp;moneyed classy chick who wants the hick with the…never-mind.

The writing is unabashedly pulpy and the twists in the plot, especially from the midpoint are mindnumbing in their preposterousness. To his credit screenwriter, Siddharth Sengupta sustains the pulpy momentum right till the end. The frenetic pace, often literally staged with goons chasing law-abiding god-fearing citizens to their death, never slackens.

Seen in the spirit of &nbsp;Sidney Sheldon’s fiction-in-motion. 'Yeh &nbsp;Kali &nbsp;Kali Aankhein' is a &nbsp;sock-in-the-tummy entertainer. It is set in a town by the &nbsp;Ganga named Onkara (a stand-in for &nbsp;Varanasi or Allahabad). The last two episodes which turn dark and murderous, are shot in Ladakh with the change of visuals serving a specific function.

I saw no compromises in production values just because the size of the screen has shrunk. The series has an eye-catching look and a lived-in feeling.

All the actors from Tahir Raj Bhasin(so ridiculous in his bewigged Mahesh Bhatt avatar in this week’s other series 'Ranjish Hi Sahi') and Shweta Tiwari, playing the simple-minded couple whose togetherness is shredded by the murderous machinations of the rich bitch(these moneyed types, I tell you) &nbsp; to the typecast Brijendra &nbsp;Kala(as &nbsp; Bhasin’s cocky domineering father) and Surya Sharma as &nbsp; Purva’s borderline psychotic brother(almost a repeat of what this talented actor played in the same director’s &nbsp;Undekhi) all do well for themselves.

But the real catch of the serial is Aanchal Singh as the won’t-take-no-for-an-answer lover girl. She plays the part in dignified measured tones giving &nbsp;Purva a &nbsp;kind of grace that perhaps the character doesn’t deserve.Also watch out for Anant Joshi as &nbsp;Vikrant’s best friend. He is the comic relief and a welcome one for a change. And Purva’s rapper-suitor played by Nikhil Pandey is a hoot.

I wish the narration was not so anxious to take audiences along. A kind of desperate breathlessness does seep into the storytelling at times. &nbsp;But that’s okay. Better than &nbsp;10 episodes of languorous tedium that we’ve been subjected to in some recent serials.

In 2001 Anurag Kashyap was all set to direct a film on the life and games of Kapil Dev. It was going to be a &nbsp;big-budgeted Rs 80 crores opus(which for those times was a fortune, equivalent to &nbsp;160 crores today) &nbsp;with &nbsp;Kapil starring as himself. When I had asked Kapil who would play Kapil he had drawled in his typical Kapil da jawaab nahin style, “Who else can play Kapil Dev but me? Of course, I can’t sing and dance. But the rest of my &nbsp;life is &nbsp;my life only.” The Kashyap project never got off the ground, like many of his pipedreams. &nbsp;Ironically &nbsp;'83' is co-produced by Phantom Films the production house which Kashyap once belonged to and which he finally broke up.

3)&nbsp;Kapil Dev insisted '83' is not about him. When I spoke to him after the film was announced he told me irritably, “First of all, it is not a film on me. So it is not my bio-pic. It is a &nbsp;film about the 1983 &nbsp;World Cup. Not about me.” &nbsp;When I &nbsp;gently pointed out that, Kapil was an integral part of the &nbsp;1983 &nbsp;World Cup series he snapped back, &nbsp;“I was! 5 reasons why Kabir Khan's '83' is the most anticipated film of the season

Bollywood has churned out campus-stories since time immemorial. Campus-dramas, sports-dramas set in campuses, college-romances are just some of the themes that have been explored by the makers. &nbsp;Most of these films paint a rather rosy picture of the regular college life- complete with romance, over the top classrooms and campuses, a lot of life-changing moments, drama and almost always nothing on actual education.&nbsp;

Nitesh Tiwari's latest film 'Chhichhore' has the usual tropes of a typical commercial college-drama, yet it is refreshingly real and delivers a very relevant message beautifully wrapped in nostalgia.

To save his son, Raghav, who has lost the zeal to live after failing the IIT-JEE entrance exams, Anirudh aka Anni (Sushant Singh Rajput) goes back in time to narrate stories from his college life. Both he and his wife Maya (Shraddha Kapoor) are former students of a premier engineering college and as their son, Raghav thinks he has failed them and himself by not qualifying to any of the colleges. Anni then decides to revisit his own college life and with the help of his buddies from the hostel, recounts the time the group had competed for a General Championship in sports back in their times. He co-story tellers, Sexa (Varun Sharma), Acid (Navin Polishetty), Derek (Tahir Raj Bhasin), Mummy (Tushar Pandey) and Saharsh Shukla (Bevda) re-tell the story and take Raghav and the the audience back in 1992 where the boys, the underdogs, fight it out with reigning champs of Hostel 3- lead by Reggie(Prateik Babbar) for the GC trophy.&nbsp;

Much like 'Student Of The Year 2' which released earlier this year, the concentration is solely on the sports championship. But unlike SOTY, the backdrop is far more real and thereby relatable. The friends of Anni maybe stereotypical- one is a porn addict, the other is cusses a bit too much and one is a Mumma's boy- but at so many instances you would find yourself laughing at the uncanny similarity that each of these characters has with people you know in reality.&nbsp;

Written by Tiwari along with Piyush Gupta and Nikhil Malhotra, the film is spruced with humour and wit which may ever so often steer towards underpants, yet provides the laughter. &nbsp;The narrative is non-linear, keeps oscillating between past and present but you will find yourself reminiscing about the good old days with Anni and his gang of 'losers'. The only time that the story slips is at the points where the friends, sitting at Anni's apartment speak jargons about the education system, parental pressure, and rat race. It feels preachy and not a conversation between old friends and those scenes are perhaps the only unrealistic and melodramatic scenes in the film.&nbsp;

The film's best moments are saved for Polishetty and Sharma, who get the best lines and are pitch-perfect in their respective roles. Bhasin as the silent sports hero is also impressive and so is Panday as the ever nervous Mumma's boy. Rajput delivers a balanced performance- he is usually genuine in most of his films and he doesn't disappoint in this one either. His scenes in the flashback where he plays the college fresher full of ideas though suffers from a Shah Rukh Khan hangover. Shraddha Kapoor gets fewer lines but is convincing as the quiet, observant Maya.&nbsp;

Wrapped in nostalgia, the film delivers an important point that there's no point being in a rat race. A line in the song 'Fikar Not' from the film suggests that one can sprint to the end line or finish it at the pace of a tortoise- the pace is not important neither should one rush to finish it on time. &nbsp;It is more important to be earnest in what you do.&nbsp;

'Chhichhore' of course takes multiple liberties - especially in scenes that are shot in the hospital (no hospital allows five people to be hovering around a patient in the ICU), but those flaws are pardonable simply because it delivers an important point and takes you back to college life- a time that most people believe is the best phase of their lives.&nbsp;

Watch it for the actors and their onscreen camaraderie, watch it for its nostalgia.&nbsp;

On Monday evening, the cast of the film, all wearing black suits, arrived at the Mumbai International airport in a bus to head for London where the first schedule begins. Now, arriving in team buses together is something synonymous to the Indian cricket team- so it was interesting to see a cast of a film arriving at the airport, dressed in uniform, to leave for the shoot of their film.&nbsp;

Ranveer Singh, who plays Kapil Dev in the film, lead the pack that also consisted of Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, &nbsp;Sahil Khattar and Ammy Virk.&nbsp; 
Before entering the airport the team posed together for the media which was present there.&nbsp;

His work was often deemed as 'obscene' but in reality, Manto wrote about the society at large and his work was merely a mirror to the society and its mindset.

Its been 63 years since Saadat Hasan Manto breathed his last, but the man, his ideologies and his work remain relevant even in this day and age. His work was often deemed as 'obscene' but in reality, Manto wrote about the society at large and his work was merely a mirror to the society and its mindset. Set in an era when India and Pakistan were newly formed, filmmaker Nandita Das' biopic 'Manto' is strikingly modern in its approach. The film opens in 1940s Bombay where Manto is a prolific screenwriter who hobnobs with some of the most prominent names of the film industry. India is on the brink of getting its independence and as certain people are packing bags to leave for their new country, Manto is quite sure that he will never leave Bombay, the city he loves so dearly. Initially, nothing seems to deter his decision of staying back in India. But as the situation becomes grave and riots spill out on the streets, his belief starts dwindling. When his best friend Shyam, an actor in the early 1940s, mutters in anger that he would want to kill all Muslims and if needed even Manto, his worst fear comes true and Manto packs his bag and leaves for Lahore. While he is forced to adapt to his new home, the new country, his heart pines for Bombay where his parents and first born remain buried. He takes to alcohol and is charged for obscenity for his story 'Thanda Ghost'- trial for which continues for years. Addiction, lack of work, and a long legal battle drain him and his family financially. Das present two very strikingly different sides of the writer. The first half is of a self-assured man, who is rather brash, slightly overconfident about his future and a very idealistic who knows his stories make people uncomfortable. In the second half, as he is forced to move to Pakistan post-partition, he is far more troubled, depressed as his works get rejected and rebuffed and alcohol addiction takes him away from his wife and daughters. Manto's pen may be sharp, may depict the horrifying effects of partition but as a family man, he fails to keep things together. A lot of Manto's popular stories like 'Khol Do', 'Dus Rupay Ka Note’, ‘Sau Watt Ka Bulb’, ‘Khol Do’, ‘Thanda Gosht’ and ‘Toba Tek Singh’ are infused into the story. As Manto roams around the city (First Bombay and then Lahore) for inspiration, these stories are played out in front of him giving the audience a sense of how Manto picked up the stories that a lot found blasphemous. One can sense how inspired and influenced Das has been by Manto's life and works but she doesn't really portray him as a hero. Instead tries to humanize him, and show his flaws. She also manages to get some formidable actors to play prominent cameos in the film. Rishi Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Tilotamma Shome, Purab Kohli, Ila Arun, Ranvir Shorey, Divya Dutta, Gurdas Mann, Vinod Nagpal, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Neeraj Kabi, and even Javed Akhtar- all make small appearances in the film either as Manto's characters or as people he meets in his life. Tahir Raj Bhasin plays Shyam, Manto's dear friend who becomes a huge film actor post-independence and always remains guilty of sending Manto off to Pakistan. While it is difficult to match up to Nawazuddin's powerful performance, but Bhasin exudes a certain likeability for his character making one feel sympathetic towards Shyam. Amid so many prominent cameos, it is Nawazuddin Siddiqui who stands out the most. He is Manto, a self-assured man who degrades into a hallucinating alcoholic and whose pride doesn't let him take up odd jobs. Nawazuddin, who has for years played a certain kind of character- belonging to the lower rung of the society- transforms himself into the polished, charismatic, witty writer with much elan. He makes Manto even more fascinating, more attractive, fierce. It's his performance that holds your attention the most. The other star who clearly shines in her limited screen time is Rasika Dugal who plays Safia, Manto's wife and the only person who remains a support for the writer in his dark days. She emotes through her eyes and provides the calmness to Manto's feisty temperament. Press censorship, religious intolerance, curb in creative liberty are things that existed even back then and exist even now. But it is for the viewer to make that connection. 'Manto' also uses Urdu in abundance- a language that may sound beautiful but for a bigger part of the audience a little difficult to comprehend. I found myself looking at the subtitles ever so often instead of listening to what the characters were saying. At 116 minutes, 'Manto' is mostly crisp storytelling. For those who have followed the man and his work, it may not offer anything new. Wish, they flexed out his relationship with his family a bit more- a side that is not known so much. 'Manto' also doesn't spell out a lot of things- so it takes time to absorb and understand the era, the language of the film. It needs time and patience to understand and relate to much like the writer himself whose work may have been shunned back then but with time has become poignant and relatable.
