<p>"The compounding crises of conflict, Covid, cholera, economic decline and now the earthquake have taken an unbearable toll," said Tedros after he visited Aleppo and saw the devastation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The situation has worsened in the rebel-held areas where aid convoys cannot reach the country's government-held without the authorisation of Damascus.</p>

<p>The single border crossing which was open for the transfer of aid was also disrupted by the earthquake.</p>

<p>"This afternoon I met with &nbsp;President Assad, who indicated he was open to considering additional cross-border access points for this emergency," said Tedros. during a virtual press conference from the Syrian capital.</p>

<p>Tedros appreciated the "recent blanket approval by the government of Syria for the UN for cross-line conveys" to transfer aid into the rebel-held areas.</p>

<p>However, he added that although cross-line aid convoys have been given the all-clear by Damascus to enter government-held areas, WHO is still waiting for the green light. "We're on standby," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A UN convoy with supplies for northwest Syria arrived via Turkey, but the agency's relief chief Martin Griffiths said much more was needed for millions whose homes were destroyed.</p>

<p>"We have so far failed the people in northwest Syria. They rightly feel abandoned. Looking for international help that hasn't arrived," Griffiths said on Twitter.</p>

<p>Alparslan Efe Demir had earlier survived an earthquake of 5.9 magnitudes which had jolted the northwestern Duzce province of Turkey in November 2022 and was forced to spend some months in an earthquake relief camp which was established by Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), reported TRT World.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nine-year-old Demir was left heartbroken after he witnessed the colossal destruction caused by the massive earthquake and the thousands of lives lost in the disaster. Upset over human suffering, Demir expressed his wish to donate his piggy bank saving in the relief funds to his mother Sinem Demir.</p>

That is why I decided to send the pocket money given by my elders to the children there. It is okay if I do not buy chocolate here. Children there should not be cold or hungry. <p>An attack blamed on the Islamic State (IS) group killed at least 11 people in central Syria, said a war monitor on Sunday (Febraury 12).&nbsp;Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the IS "attacked about 75 people on Saturday while they were collecting truffles in the Palmyra area, in the eastern countryside of Homs."</p>

<p>The attack killed "10 civilians, including a woman, and a member of the (Syrian) regime forces," it said, adding that others still remain missing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The attack was reported by Syrian state news agency SANA as well but with a lower death toll. The report said that IS "terrorists" fired machine guns and killed four civilians, including a woman.</p>

<p>Ten others were wounded in the attack, some "critically", the news agency added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the jihadists lost their last scraps&nbsp;of territory following a military onslaught backed by a US-led coalition in March 2019, IS remnants in Syria mostly retreated into desert hideouts in the country's east.</p>

<p>They have since used such hideouts to ambush Kurdish-led forces and Syrian government troops while continuing to mount attacks in Iraq.</p>
