A video has been released by Taronga zoo which shows five lions scratching and breaking the fence around them and finally escaping the enclosure.

In the video, the five lions, which include an adult male and four cubs, are clawing at the fence and then squeezing underneath it to escape the enclosure and wander outside their zoo.

The escape of lions, which took place in early November, led to the zoo's lockdown with the issue of a “code one” alert. The visitors and staff sought shelter till the lions were locked back in their enclosure.

The video shows the lions remaining close to the fence after escaping the enclosure, as lioness Maya remains inside it.

As per a statement released by Targona zoo, all five lions managed to escape but remained calm before returning to the enclosure on their own.

“The five lions calmly investigated within metres of their main exhibit, before actively trying to find their way back under the fence as lioness Maya and keepers began calling for them,” the Targona zoo said in a statement.

“The cubs and father Ato made several attempts to re-enter the exhibit and male cub Luzuko was the first to successfully do so. He was followed shortly after by female cub Zuri and male cub Khari. With encouragement from keepers, Ato returned to the exhibit before making his way into the dens to be reunited with his pride,” the zoo added.

One teacher and 11 school students sustained injuries after a science experiment went wrong in Sydney on Monday. Two students were seriously hurt as they suffered burns to their face and chest while the others were rushed to the Royal North Shore and Northern Beaches hospitals. According to the local media reports, the team from the Manly West public school were trying to create a “sugar snake” with baking soda, a sugar mixture and an accelerant but the erratic winds on the beach ended up causing the accident. The emergency cases were airlifted to Westmead children’s hospital.

Pakistan have always fancied playing against New Zealand in Men's ICC semi-finals. Having a 3-2 lead over the Black Caps, the Babar Azam-led Pakistan locked horns with the 2021 T20 World Cup's runners-up New Zealand on Wednesday (November 09) in the first semi-final at the SCG, Sydney. Having lost the toss, Babar & Co. rode on Shaheen Afridi's two-wicket haul and fifties from openers Babar and Mohd Rizwan to beat the Kiwis by seven wickets and storm into the final.

Opting to bat first, Kane Williamson & Co. lost Finn Allen early with Shaheen trapping him leg before. Devon Conway and skipper Williamson tried to stitch a partnership but the former departed for a 20-ball 21, failing to accelerate from his end. The NZ skipper was joined by Daryl Mitchell who looked in his elements and tried hard to up the ante. Mitchell slammed an impressive 35-ball 53 not out whereas Williamson was dismissed for a 42-ball 46 as Pakistan were at their very best in the fielding unit whereas their bowlers also curtailed the run-flow.

Shadab Khan, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf were economical as NZ never got going or looked threatening in the end overs. Eventually, they managed 152 for 4 courtesy of Mitchell's blitz.

In reply, Babar and Rizwan -- who have been criticised for their slow batting approach at the top -- stitched their ninth 100-run stand to guide Pakistan past the finish line, with five balls to spare. Babar got a reprieve on the very first delivery he faced and there was no stopping him after that. There was not much help for the bowlers as NZ pacers didn't impress and Rizwan-Babar started to make them pay heavily.

Team India started their T20 World Cup 2022 edition with a memorable win over arch-rivals Pakistan at the iconic MCG, Melbourne on Sunday (October 23). Having won the toss and opting to bowl first, India rode on three-fers from Arshdeep Singh and all-rounder Hardik Pandya to restrict Pakistan to 159 for 8.

In reply, India were tottering at 31 for 4, losing their skipper Rohit Sharma (4) and vice-captain KL Rahul for cheap. However, Virat Kohli produced a masterclass, 82 not out off 53 balls, and was well-supported by Hardik (40) to take India past the finish line courtesy of a four from R Ashwin's blade on the last ball of the contest. Now, the action shifts to the Netherlands face-off as India will aim to keep their winning streak alive.

India will take on the Dutch line-up, at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney. This will be the first face-off between both sides in the format. So far, India have faced Netherlands twice in ODI World Cup -- in 2003 and 2011. Hence, a new challenge will be infront of the Indian team when they take the field versus the Netherlands line-up.

Given Ireland stunned 2010 winners England on Wednesday (October 26), India won't take the Netherlands lightly. With no experience of playing them whatsoever in the format, India will start cautiously before trying to explode. As per the conditions, a used pitch will be on offer for the India-Dutch encounter, given it is the second encounter of the day (after South Africa vs Bangladesh). A similar sort of pitch can be expected, as it was in the Super 12 opener featuring Australia and New Zealand, but with lesser bounce. Thus, slower bowlers can come to play. Toss will be crucial and the captains can look to bat first, on a surface which might get slower. However, with rain forecast, bowling first is also an option.

Predicting India's XI for the Netherlands face-off: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh

A major Australian gambling firm has been fined AU $100m ($62m) by the regulator for failing to stop money laundering and other criminal activities in its casinos.

According to reports, the Star Entertainment Group’s license to operate its Sydney casino has been suspended, and it will take effect on Friday.

The New South Wales (NSW) Independent Casino Commission's (NICC) action came in response to a report earlier this year which found that the Star’s Sydney casino was involved in money laundering and that it let organised crime thrive.

The report had blasted the operator for taking a "cavalier" approach in monitoring casinos’ activities and also accused it of trying to cover up its illicit actions.

In response to the report at that time, the casino operator pledged to do “whatever necessary” to restore its suitability as an operator and appointed an independent monitor as well as committed to a cultural overhaul.

Under the laws enacted by the NSW government in August, the maximum penalty that can be imposed is a $100 million fine.

On Monday, the regulator said that it won’t revoke the Star's licence altogether in order to protect thousands of jobs, and added that the Sydney casino would function under a manager appointed by the NSW Independent Casino Commission.

“From Friday the Star will not be able to run the casino on its own until it can earn its licence back,” regulatory chief Philip Crawford was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Several of the top executives of the Star group, including former chief executive Matt Bekier, had resigned in light of the scandal.

Robbie Cooke, who took over as the Star’s new chief executive, had earlier committed to restore the firm’s credibility.

“The business had lost its way in a number of areas, but I’m committed to rehabilitating it and restoring the group to suitability [to hold its casino licenses],” Cooke was quoted as saying.

Australia: Indian student stabbed repeatedly in Sydney; one arrested

The year 2022 is the year of breaking records. The latest record which has been broken is after 164 years when Sydney recorded its wettest year with almost three months of the year still to go.

WION Climate Tracker: Sydney experienced 2200 millimetres of rain this year

Sydney recorded its wettest year in 164 years as authorities braced for major floods in Australia's east on Thursday, with more heavy downpours expected to fall over the next three days.

With almost three months of 2022 still to go, Australia's largest city has recorded 2,200 mm of rain in a year for the first time since records began in 1858.

By Thursday afternoon, Sydney had received about 2,213 mm (87 inches) of rainfall for the year, surpassing the previous record of 2,194 mm set in 1950, official data showed.

More than 58 mm fell over five hours since 9 a.m. local time (2200 GMT, Wednesday), the Bureau of Meteorology's (BoM) live data showed.

More downpours are forecast for the rest of 2022, as Australia's east coast remains in the grip of a rare third straight year of the La Nina weather phenomenon.

"Heading into late spring and summer, we're still in this active La Nina period so we can expect more and more rainfall and that does increase the risk of flooding," BoM forecaster Jonathan How told ABC television.

During the past two years, floods have struck Sydney's suburbs three times, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes.

With a wild weather system expected to dump heavy rains through the weekend across a wide swathe of Australia's east, authorities warned Sydney residents to watch out for flash flooding and stay away from flooded roads.

Many dams and rivers are already at full capacity. The New South Wales state government has committed to raising the height of the wall at Sydney's Warragamba Dam, which supplies 80% of the city's water, to help prevent future floods.

'MORE WATER COMING'

Some of the state's rural inland towns were already flooded, with television footage showing damaged roads and residents moving farm animals to higher ground.

New South Wales emergency crews said there were 47 flood warnings in place across the state, with moderate flooding expected in parts of Sydney on Saturday.

The situation will only get more dangerous over the next few weeks, emergency services spokesperson Scott McLennan said.

"Are we at the worst? We don't know, but we do know that there is more water coming," McLennan told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Sydney records wettest year since 1858 as Australia braces for more floods

Fans of the Sydney United 58 football club drew wide condemnation for displaying Nazi symbols and salute at the Australia Cup final.

Videos and images that went viral on social media purportedly showed fans singing “Za Dom Spremni” (for homeland–ready) — a chant used by the far-right Ustase movement in the 1930s and 1940s.

Apart from that, the flag of the Ustase movement, which represents the Croatian fascist movement, was also on display.

According to reports, the supporters were attempting to drown out the Indigenous welcoming ceremony prior to kick-off at Western Sydney Stadium.

Football Australia (FA) "strongly” condemned “the actions of a small minority" of Sydney United 58 fans, and said it has initiated disciplinary action against them.

"Football Australia is assessing all footage and images available of certain individuals which are of concern to our organisation and the broader Australian football community, including the displaying of the Hitler salute," Football Australia (FA) said in a statement.

"Football Australia is working closely with the management of CommBank Stadium and NSW Police to determine strong and swift action on any identified anti-social behaviour, which may also be deemed as illegal in the state of NSW."

On Monday, FA issued a show-cause notice to semi-professional side Sydney United 58, asking the club to respond before any sanctions are implemented.

It added it was working with New South Wales (NSW) police "to determine strong and swift action on any identified anti-social behaviour".

Meanwhile, NSW state Premier Dominic Perrottet slammed the behaviour of the supporters terming it "absolutely horrendous".

A secret handwritten letter by Queen Elizabeth II for Australia has been stored in a vault, where she had ordained it to open in the next 63 years, reports Sydney-based 7 News.

The letter was penned in November 1986 after the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney was restored, and since then, it has been kept in a glass case within a locked room in the dome of the palace.

However, no one knows what the letter says—not even the Queen’s personal staff. So, one has to wait till 2085 to know the content of the letter.

“On a suitable day to be selected by you in the year 2085 A.D, would you please open this envelope and convey to the citizens of Sydney my message to them,” the instruction addressed to the Lord Mayor of Sydney says.

It is simply signed, “Elizabeth R.”

The Queen Victoria Building was established in 1898 and named in honour of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, which was observed the previous year to commemorate the monarch's accession 60 years earlier.

Queen Victoria was the great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth.

Queen Elizabeth II, who was crowned in 1952, first visited Australia in 1954, two years after she ascended the throne. She has visited the country 16 times.

The British monarch serves as the head of state in Australia. King Charles III took over after his mother passed away.

In 1999, a referendum was conducted in Australia to decide if it wanted to become a republic.

About 54 per cent of the population at the time sided with the Queen continuing to remain the head of state. Consequently, the Queen's head of state position stayed unabolished.

The throwing of plastic in the marine bodies is damaging the aquatic world putting many lives in danger. Owing to plastic litter, a turtle hatchling in Sydney defecated plastic for 6 days.

WION Climate Tracker: Turtle hatchling poops plastic for six days

According to Taronga zoo's animal hospital, a newborn green sea turtle that was rescued from a Sydney beach had consumed so much plastic that it took six days for the contents to be expelled. The 127-gram hatchling was discovered in a rockpool not far from Tamarama Beach in Sydney. It had a hole in its shell, a chip in one of its flippers, and one of its four flippers was gone. Apart from these wounds, caregivers reported that the turtle appeared to be in good physical health and could swim without difficulty.

The turtle is described as a "bagel with flippers," and it has recovered its health and weight to over 400g. Although there has been development, it might still be a full year before he is returned to the wild and coastal seas. According to the hospital, little hatchlings are particularly vulnerable to predators because of their size, and they want to give the animal the best chance of survival. Warmer waters are better for turtles, thus size and ocean temperature are both important considerations.

While some states have enacted stricter single-use plastic prohibitions, such as New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia, the scope of the issue can occasionally be daunting. Every year, more than 8 million tonnes are dumped into the oceans. The bulk is deposited along coastlines, carried out to sea by rivers, or left behind by fishing boats.

Australia is well known for the various kinds of animals and insects found in different parts of the continent. While it is not common to suddenly discover rare species of organisms in some parts of Australia, people in New South Wales were caught off guard by an “alien-like” sea creature that was found washed up on a beach in Sydney. The incident happened at the Cronulla in south Sydney as most beach goers were alarmed by the unknown creature and they soon started posting pictures on social media. ‘They are everywhere … I was also wondering what they are,” one wrote on Facebook.

However, according to a report by The Western Australian, the creature may not be that “alien”.

Sea Life Sydney Aquarium aquarist Daniel Sokolnikoff said that the “alien-like sea creature” is a sea hare – a creature which is also known as “sea slug” or “ink fish” in the region.

“It is most likely the species Aplysia sydneyensis, a local Sydney species,” he said in the report.

“They come in a range of different colours. Basically, they have adapted to blend in with their environments. So, you see them in really dark black colours, but then you also see them in browns, yellows, and even reds,” he added while explaining the characteristics of the creature.

While the creatures are not a threat, Sokolnikoff warned the people at the beach against touching them. He also said that while humans are safe, sea hares may cause reactions in certain dogs.

“If you don‘t know what it is, you don’t want to be touching it. Observe from a distance but don’t touch anything that you’re not sure what it is. That disturbs the sea life as a general rule,” he said.

Basically, they have adapted to blend in with their environments. So, you see them in really dark black colours, but then you also see them in browns, yellows, and even reds,” he added while explaining the characteristics of the creature. He also said that while humans are safe, sea hares may cause reactions in certain dogs. “If you don‘t know what it is, you don’t want to be touching it. Observe from a distance but don’t touch anything that you’re not sure what it is. That disturbs the sea life as a general rule,” he said.

Australia's energy minister urged millions of residents of New South Wales to switch off their lights and conserve power in order to avoid blackouts. The request came a day after Australia suspended its spot electricity market due to unscheduled outages at ageing coal-fired utilities. In Australia, several coal-fired units have gone offline due to scheduled maintenance and unexpected faults.

Chris Bowen, who is the Climate Change and Energy Minister urged households to save power without sacrificing essentials such as heating. He also said that the efforts are focused on restoring units to normal operations. During a televised media conference in Canberra, he said, "We are confident we can avoid blackouts. If you have a choice about when to run certain items, don't run them from 6 to 8 (pm)."

Matt Kean, who is NSW Treasurer and Energy Minister also asked Sydney residents to reduce their energy usage from 5.30pm to 8.30pm (local time).

As quoted by news.com.au, Kean said on Wednesday, "A number of the generators that we rely on to produce our electricity haven’t come online in the way we expect them to."

"We're not telling people to turn off their heating … we're just saying maybe if you’re washing the dishwasher at 7.30pm, to delay it until 8.30pm. What we’re doing is focused on making sure that we get through tonight and the next couple of days," he added.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said energy will be on the agenda at a dinner with state leaders on Thursday and a meeting Friday.

Meanwhile, several social media users have pointed out the expansive light show that was apparently still operating despite fears of blackouts and power outages.
